I think they lost their integrity a long time ago when they started purposefully creating notebooks that become obsolete after a certain period of time... lol. But in all honesty, i'm going to college and I am trying to scrap every bit of cash I can. 80 bucks to others, is my groceries......

    hey everyone..
question) is it possible to sometime in the future switch out my core duo with a core 2 duo? (i was thinking after santa rosa comes out)
next question) has anyone upgraded there ram from 1 gb to 2 gb with 3rd party hardware (eg patriot), ive heard hp has done weird things and made it impossible to upgrade ram, is there any truth to this. it looks pretty simple to just switch out the ram but i dont want to waste my money.
    thanks ahead of time.

That's the first I've heard about not being able to switch out RAM. People say all sorts of things, usually against big companies they're envious of. I would suggest getting paired 1GB modules. Check out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145157.

U can do this anytime after u have logged on in windows. U will get the System Information dialog. Infact as I said earlier, in order to check the BIOS version u need to click on Advanced button, u neednt do that as u get the BIOS information when u press "Fn"+Esc.

    @therock

Fn+Esc while you're in windows starts the "System Information" app in the taskbar. It dosen't come up on top of other windows though, so you'll have to open it from the taskbar.
and you can't have uninstalled the "HP Quick Launch buttons" app; it's part of the preloaded software and you possibly deleted it as bloatware. It's required for this to work, as well as the FN+#key combinations.

    @Aorz

The processor can be changed out as long as the new one is the same socket type (i.e. socket "M"). Whether or not the Santa Rosa core 2 Duo's will be Socket M is yet to be released by M$. If they're not, you can still get a Socket "M" Merom C2D and it will be compatible.

Oh, OK the same thing as entering "msinfo32" in the run box.

Here are some more I know of for XP but may work in Vista, and would like to of learn more for Vista:

SFC /scannow (yes there is a space after SFC) This utility runs a windows critical file check and will ask for the OS disk, and the disk only, no substitute as in a Floppy or jump drive.

%temp% This is where all the junk piles up after installs are done. I clean mine out regularly.

    DXDIAG Direct-X diagnostics.

My dv6000t is kicking my desktops ass in the SuperPi test.

    My dv6000t doing 2M = 1 minute, 4 seconds and change.

    My ASUS P4P800Deluxe W\ 3.0 GHZ P4 With HyperThreading, 2 GB DDR = 1 minute, 58.750 seconds.

Heh, I smell a new home Desk Top build up in the near future. Awwe, she aint no dog, but the little laptop is a struttin.

I'm going over to overclock.net to search out some details on running the superPi.

Yes, thanks for the superpi tip.

    Even Number?
Heh! That is why I put "and change" on the other one. I couldn't remember it. But the desktop landed at the even number. I am a machinist so the .750s stuck in my mind pretty good.

And Thats, Not All Mr. will118.

    I just tweaked her a tad and did a 2M @ 01m 2.806s. He! He! :D

Go to device manager/disk drives/select your drive/properties/Policies. Check the lower box as it should be open. Leave the one above it checked (it should be already). Close and run superpi.

I'll bet this is what you utility did for you will118?

You guys be sure and look back once and a while for the 30 day price protection thing. Do it often and if you see a $20.00 bill there and take it because it fluctuates allot. HP's fine print says 30 days after you receive your order. Hmm? One would expect they would say from when you PLACED your order.

I have seen the custom configurations options change in and out during my period. Such as:
At one point the DVD recovery disc's' were not available as an option or other wise. They come and go.
Now there is no matte or glossy display choice.
The free DVD Dual layer "free" upgrade comes and goes.

Anyway, mine went the wrong way at $1227.27 before tax. The current config is $1366.99 before tax. But you have to add $50.00 for the dual layer DVD/RW as it was free for me, and there is no choice in display options, I opted for the matte. Still I'm not dusapointed.

So perhaps when trying to get the price protection refund they make use these comparisons against you in the name of "We do not offer that package anymore".

so keep em on their toes. A $20.00 bill is nice at a happy hour.

Maybe I should call and send them the difference! :D Not!

price protection is: if you order a prebuilt laptop for $1000 and then it is on sale next week for $900 at the same store. if you had price protection - you could claim that $100.

Hi all, I have been reading this forum for a while now and I am ready to make a purchase. At first I wanted to do some gaming but every time I built a custom build, it came to around $1200. So I gave up on the gaming because price is a factor. I need this computer for basic home computing and would like to take it with me when I travel. I just wanted to know what you guys thought of the dv6226us? Circuit City has it for $699 which seems like a good deal to me. Again I only need it for basic home computing and maybe watch a dvd when I travel. Thanks for your thoughts.

I think the dv6226us will be fine for basic computing, and that's a good price. The fan is quiet enough for me, but that is relative to different persons. Down the road, a RAM upgrade to 2GB would give it a nice boost.

    Best,

Having played with this thing now for a week I'm enjoying Vista more and more. It seems like they have added quite a few improvements. What are your favorite features? Likes/dislikes?

I haven't decided if the "gadgets" are cool or a waste of space. Any opinions?

Is the dv6265us a good model (specs-wise?). It has 2 GB of RAM which is nice, i'm more wondering about the T5500 processor? I hope it doesn't suck too much. I will be doing a little bit of everything, but general everyday use + some memory intensive stuff like Photoshop work.

Ideally, I want to be able to run (as an example) - firefox with 8 tabs open, Photoshop, mp3 player (or maybe iTunes), AIM, all at the same time without slowdown. Can a T5500 and 2GB Ram handle all that in Vista?

I have turned it to classic view in every way I possibly could. I am set in my ways thats all. But I really have only one big complaint and that is ie7 and how we cannot move tool bars around and such. Lots of customizing has been taken away but I am loving the speed of this notebook.

I have a T5600, and it runs everything like you're talking about without any problems. If I remember correctly, though, the dv5265us uses the Intel 950 graphics card, and mine has the NVIDIA 7400, which is a better GPU. I'm not sure how much difference it would make in what you're anticipating doing. I would think the dv6265 would work out well for you.

I hope you are able to get yours - I just noticed that the 6226 no longer has a page on Circuit City! So they must have completely sold out and are going to discontinue that line. I would hope that at some point they will have another in that price range. There is the 6205 which they have for less than $600, but it only has 512MB of RAM, probably not enough to run Vista well.

I wouldn't. I would get the dv6275us (which I have ;)) because it is the same price at CC (after rebates) as the dv6365us and has a better graphics card (NVIDIA 7400 instead of the Intel 950) and a TV tuner to boot. The tuner may not be an issue, but if you can essentially get it free, especially with the better graphics card, why not? It may come in handy.

In IE 7 you can move the menu bar to the top of the browser as in previous versions with a simple registry tweak.

    1. Open the registry editor by click on Start then in the Search field typing: regedit then hit enter.

    2. In the left panel click on: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Toolbar > WebBrowser

    3. In the right panel right click on the empty space and select: New > DWORD (32-bit Value)

    4. Name the new DWORD: ITBar7Position

    5. right click on the newly created ITBar7Position select Modify and change the 0 to 1. Click OK and exit

Now the toolbar will positioned on top as in previous versions like in the screenshot.

I thank you very much but....Heh! Mine is already like that. Hmm? I want to get rid of the bottom bar. Then put the address bar in line behind the menu bar with the page arrows between them.
