I don't have the problem at all, just the typical fan noise. This machine actually stays very cool as well. I've had mine for nearly a month with no problems to speak of.

Very highly recommended in my book!

Hey folks, I have a problem. A couple of days ago my laptop (see sig) died. I closed the lid during shutdown and in the morning when I opened it up all I got was a blank desktop without icons or taskbar. All I could see was a black background and the white mouse pointer.

After some futzing around, I was able to figure out that if I used ctrl-alt-del I could bring up the task manager and restart the explorer process. This would get me my icons and desktop and return some, not all, functionality to Vista. I am unable to install drivers, use the device manager, bring up the networking dialog or generally do anything with the Control Panel. If I restart the machine, I'm back to the blank desktop and have to restart the explorer process again.

I would like to use the recovery partition to roll everything back to the factory standard, but windows doesn't think I have a recovery point set. Isn't there a point set at the factory? Isn't this what the extra partition is on my HD? Has anyone else experienced this, or am I all alone here?

I hate to have to think that I'm going to need to return my laptop less than 2 months after purchase...

I would go to HP tech support live chat. No language barrier to deal with. If you had recovery DVD's I would say boot to it.
Or boot into safe mode and see if you get a "Last Known Good configuration" choice.

Let us know what you have to do to get it back up, please.

I would talk with an HP advisor, they helped me clear my backup partition when it was full. They were very helpful. Never close your laptop while it is shutting down! Just asking for problems.

For those of you following my story:
(which is ... umm ... none of you)

The power supply for my new dv6000t failed last Saturday. I should receive my replacement by Friday. I've not even had this thing for an entire month. Has anyone else had an issue with the power supply?

My dv6000t does not get hot, I've been quite pleased with that aspect of it. Maybe it has something to do with the 12 cell lifting the PC off the table and letting it ventilate.

So I called HP, and after an hour on the phone with Bangalore I figured out how to do a complete system restore (hit F11 while booting up). This allowed me to restore from the partition without needing the media I purchased separately. I lost everything which was installed on the machine, but at least I didn’t need to return it.

At first the tech support guy thought I had a corrupt user profile, so he had me create a new one in safe mode and then try to launch Vista using the new user. All I got was the “Welcome” screen, which displayed for about 20 minutes. After that we decided to do the system restore, during which time the tech support guy tried to sell me some anti-virus software which he claims is the reason for my troubles.

I never had anything but freeware anti-virus on my XP laptop and never experienced a problem like this on it, so I doubt very much that was the issue. The only thing I had a chance to load onto my dv6000t before the crash was:

    Stalker
    FEAR
    Cisco VPN client
    Firefox
    iTunes
    Cache Post-Relational Database (don’t ask)
    Bittorrent
    Putty

I suspect that there was actually a driver conflict of some sort. I downgraded my video card driver, and either Stalker or FEAR may have hosed my sound card driver (which was being particularly cranky during all of this). Also, my networking, like the driver support, never came up with a dialog box while it was broken, so I’m also suspicious of the version of the VPN client I was using.

For now I think I’ll just have to keep running 2 laptops, one for work (XP) and one for throw-away stuff (Vista). This is a real bummer because my other laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with multiple vertical lines running across the screen (dellverticalline.com).

Next time I’m buying a mac.

No doubt, my machine has been running like a champ!

One thing I learned along time ago, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

"I suspect that there was actually a driver conflict of some sort. I downgraded my video card driver"

    Prolly not a good idea!

I've seen some debate as to which is better, the x3100 or the GO 7400. I'm not a gamer by any means but what I am is a web developer. I do a lot of Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop.

Which is the best for my needs and why?

I have the dv6000t for over a month now and not happy with the bloatware that came with Vista Home Premium. I have the HP OS recovery DVD($15) which i want to use to reinstall just vista home premium without any HP tools and bloatware. Is it possible to do this?
Also is it possible to keep the recovery partition and have it backup the newly installed vista main partition(without bloatware) in case i need to do a restore(press F11 on booting up)? I may have to install an HP tool that is on the OS recovery DVD that does this?
I will be backing up the C:\swsetup directory to a CD/DVD so that i can use it to install any HP drivers that vista needs during installation.

Use the anytime upgrade dvd to do a clean install. Just make sure you backup your drivers.

I am considering dv6000t (T7200) with 2G rams from Costco (with customer configuration). But, I know dv6000t had a high pitch sound problem. Do you guys know if this problem is resolved and all dv6000t series are safe from it?

Wow. Its been several months since I posted. My dv6000t is doing well and I love it. I was wondering if this laptop has Infrared capacities. I am trying to connect my cell phone to it, but the USB connection is not working because Vista doesn't find the driver for it. I have installed the driver, but it still does not recognize it. My cell phone has infrared connection, but I don't know if this laptop does.

Does anyone know if the DV6000t has infrared capacities?

I suspect you have a driver issue using XP instead of Vista. The installed driver would have been for Vista, wouldn't it? If so, I would guess you need a webcam driver for XP.

My webcam is fine, but I use Vista. FWIW, I prefer Vista to XP. Did you revert to XP because you have programs and/or hardware which do not support Vista?

audio editing programs + the fact that vista doesnt support EAX sound in games using audigy soundcards which i happen to have.. theres no point doing a complete upheaval of how you use your computer just to get some added functionality from vista i think.. i tried the windows xp drivers.. from the hp site and also from a SWsetup folder on an xp DV6000 wont work.. i guess its time to go back to HP

You could start by uninstalling the programs you don't want. Also burn the SWSETUP folder to dvd and then delete it to gain more space. If you ever want to reinstall any of the apps you removed, you can simply get them from the dvd backup you made (or by using the recovery discs to restore factory state).

Download and run CCleaner to delete any leftover files and registry entries from the uninstalls, and then defragment the hard drive.

Hi All-I've been looking at HPs for a while and Costco is offering a dv6000t at a discount. Let me stress that I am not computer hardware/operating systems savy, but the specs look like they will work for me. I'm going back to school so it will be used for mostly business type stuff, but I want to be able to deal with photos, and burn music/information to CDs-DVDs. I would greatly value opinions. Here are the specs:

    2MB L2 cache
    533MHz front side bus

    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7400 graphics (128MB discrete + 128MB shared)

hey.. I think for what youre gonna use it for, its way more than sufficient. I am a more than averagely heavy user and i have the same specs with 1 gig ram (upgrading to 2 gig) and vista runs smooth on 2 gigs on my brothers pc. you should be fine.

    @Bill
Thanks for trying to help with the webcam issue. i dual booted vista with xp and the webcam is working perfectly on vista. so its probably a driver issue. I'm trying to solve it. If i find a solution ill post it here so other people can benefit later. thanks anyway you're a helpful guy i always see you trying to help..

I have been trying to burn a backup of the swsetup folder, but every time I do and I reinsert the dvd, it just says it is an "full disk yet there are no files on it. And when I try to explore the disk it asks me if I want to burn a disk.

    Am I doing something wrong?

I used WMA player to burn it, and I tried just by hitting the "burn disk" icon in the folder window. Neither one seemed to work. I was going to try again using another burning software to see if that helped.

    Any suggestions?

Try burning the disc with the Sonic/Roxio software that came with the laptop, it should not be as tempermental as the native burning apps.

My Vista seems to be about the same speed as it was when I received the lappie. A couple of things I do is run Advanced WindowsCare and CCleaner almost daily (both freebies). I also defrag with Auslogic defragger (another freebie) at least once a month. I also run Spybot every two or three days. Doing these seems to keep the computer running more efficiently.

    hey Bill.

I solved my problem another way.

Updated my soundediting apps to versions that actually work,
found a workaround for the soundcard (hope they get working drivers soon)
Kept the vista install, and bought 2 gigs ram from newegg very cheap actually.
:) now im happy happy happy. If only my dvd writer actually burnt anything. even a cd will do.. maybe ill go to HP and demand a replacement sometime soon.. heh

    Thanks Again!!
