Hello there my fellow handsome and beautiful prospective Dv6000T owners. I myself have been eyeing *spelling may be off* this piece of hardware and i find myself wondering will this be able to handle day to day use in and out of class, playing a video game or two like World Of Warcraft somewhat decently, create presentations, write essays/reports and surf the web with ease? I'm in need of a little help here. Please if you can, give me some constructive criticism or any answers that you possibly could :D

    – Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    – Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
    – 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    – 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    – 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
    – Free webcam included with HP Imprint + Microphone
    – Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
    – FREE Upgrade from 80GB 5400RPM to 120GB 5400RPM
    – Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    – No TV Tuner w/remote control
    – 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    – Norton Internet Security(TM) 2007 - 24 Months
    – System Recovery DVD w/Windows Vista Home Premium
    – Microsoft(R) Works Suite 2006 includes Word
    – HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
    *GrAnD ToTal of = $1,543.72

and a quick question or two here :D . The screen says Widescreen, but do they mean the actual physical dimensions or just what and how the screen displays the images/movies/games etc?

If anyone has any suggestions or questions I'd greatly appreciate the reply!

The "widescreen" is a 16:10 widescreen display. With movies/TV in 16:9, it displays small bars on the top and bottom of the screen. With games, some games support 16:10 resolutions, like 1280x800, so it fills up the entire screen without stretching.

I like your setup. You went about the same as me, except I went AMD, so I had to go with the nVidia Geforce Go 7200. I would have skipped out on Norton; there's better free anti-virus software. Good choice going with the 12 cell. It sticks out of the bottom a little bit, but the extra battery life you gain is worth it because Windows Aero is supposedly a bit of a resource/battery hog. Good job not getting Office from them; their prices aren't outrageous, but since it sounds like you're in college, you can either get it very cheap with your student discount or free from your IT department (my college gives each student a free copy of XP and Office). Lastly, you'll definitely appreciate that extra RAM for light gaming, multitasking, etc.

    Cool,
Thanx very much! I really appreciate the time! Yah I tried getting mine with an amd processor because I believe it would fit the job and it was less expensive but for some reason my configuration at hp suddenly disappeared and so did many options with AMD for thier laptops and especially their graphics card..that FUGLY looking GMA X3100 graphics card.... bleh.... lol
Don't flame me, its just my opinion :D
What else is out there other than McAffee*which i don't like* and Norton Antivirus?

The Norton Internet Security 2007 is surprisingly good and was named an Editor's Choice by PC Mag. I'm almost at the end of the trial period and am considering keeping it.

    *DEAD*

Well I've had mine for 6 or 7 weeks now and a few days ago it decided to die. I don't know what happened. It was running but the screen was off. I moved the mouse but nothing happened. I pushed the power button to see what would happen. When I pushed it again it beeped a few times really loud. When I pushed the power button again I heard the windows start up music but she screen was still dark. It beeped again and now it won't do anything. The blue light is on where the power plugs in but the light on the front that shows that it has AC power is out.

I wonder if the power supply is dead and the battery is just flat. HP is shipping me a box. THIS SUX! Hopefully I'll have it back soon.

Too Bad. I have heard the loud beep when trying to power it up when it was already on. I forgot it was sleeping.
There have been some that have not realized the power jack snaps in. You can plug it in without it snapping and run it but with problems. How are you on that?
Have you unplugged it for a minute or so and plugged it in again and hit the power button?
I use a mouse 99.9% of the time and turn my touchpad off. It took me a minute to figure it will not wake by tapping it when its off. Heh! Have to space bar it to wake it with the TP off.

    Let us know what happens.

    Hi Copytekk,

Q1: Where did you buy your HP dv6000t from?

Q2: Did you by any chance buy Extended Warranty on it? If Yes, which one and for how much?

Q3: If no Warranty ... who is Fixing it for you? And what will it COST You?

    Thanks,
    G!

What is the port on the right side of the laptop and to the left of the dvd drive used for when you pull out that piece?

Did you happen to drop it or anything? did u try running it on without the battery? It seems like the whole motherboard fried or something...

I hope you get your laptop back promptly. Mine is in right now because the headphone jacks aren't working and the headphone board is backordered. They said my laptop won't be back until 06/30 and they recieved it on the 24th of May. The worst thing is everytime I talk to a case manager they never call me back :(. HP is starting to piss me off.

That's a good price for a very good configuration. The only thing is that if gaming matters to you (and it doesn't to me), the Intel 950 graphics card may be a drawback.

    Best,

    Hey Bill,

Thanks for your response. I do some gaming sometimes, but I don't do graphic intensive games typically, I do Tycoon, Empire Earth type things and I typically run them on a tower so the graphic card doesnt worry me too much on this laptop, but thank you for the heads up, I have not been keeping up with the computer industry the last 3 or 4 years so any pointers are helpful to me!

I have basically the same laptop (DV6265ca) which is from the previous Canadian model line. The only difference is mine has the T5500 processor, and I'm very happy with the computer. I did a clean install of Vista and it's very clean and tidy now without all the added bloatware cluttering up the tray.

As for performance, I've found it to be more than adequate for my needs. I do some Photoshop and graphics, and the GMA 950 video chip is quite fast for 2D rendering. I don't play games much (chess, some number crunching, etc.), so I don't need the dedicated video chip.

The only thing I'm disappointed with is the webcam and microphone do not work all that well yet in Vista, but I'm hoping HP will update the drivers for it soon. They just updated a bunch of other drivers for both 32 and 64-bit editions.

I think you'll be quite happy with the laptop. :)

A1: I bought it direct from HP.

A2: No, just the standard year

A3: HP's empty box showed up today. I'm shipping it in for repair. The thing that sucks is the paperwork that came with the box says you have to back up your HDD because they will be doing a restore as a part of the repair. I pulled the HDD to try and back it up using an enclosure and the pin configuration is different. I have no way to back it up! I'm going to include a note begging them not to wipe it but we'll see. :(

i just ordered a dv6000 & ive read a lot of this forum. i know nothing about laptops, so i probably should have read up a little before i customized one. i really only need it for school stuff [off to college, yay!] & some entertainment. im not big on games, just like watching movies, & i take a lot of pictures. this is what i got:

    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Celeron(R) M 440 (1.86 GHz/1MB L2 Cache)
    - 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    - 512MB DDR2 System Memory (1 Dimm)
    - Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    - HP Imprint Finish + Microphone + Webcam
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    - FREE Upgrade from 80GB 5400RPM to 120GB 5400RPM!!
    - LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 8.0

i see that a lot of people went with the core 2 duo, i went with the celeron, to save money. also, i went back to hp, where i customized it & there is a new little thing that says if youre getting vista, they recommend 2GB ram. i obviously didnt know what i was doing. i was wondering if everything would be okay. its supposed to be built by the 15th. help, please?

I was able to install all the programs I was running on XP onto Vista Home Premium. I had to call Adobe to get PS\CS2 unlocked since I had upgraded it in place several times over. Quicken 2001 Deluxe is a bit flakey, but seems to be working right now, although it will no longer let me back up.

Update: I am now able to backup within Quicken 2001 Deluxe. I've been making a number of changes, so unsure precisely what the trigger was, but suspect that it either had something to do with disabling the Windows Firewall and/or uninstalling the HP bloatware.

OK. Just got my laptop back today. Some of you asked me to keep you updated so here goes.

First of all, I must say it was a pretty quick process. I called Friday night at around 10pm. They ship you a box and FedEx label which takes 1-2 business days so I didn't get that until Tuesday, 6/5. I dropped it at a FedEx location the next day after work at around 6pm. Long story short - they received it Thursday, fixed it and shipped it back out Friday or Saturday. All I know is that I received it back today.

So when I got home I read the sheet that they put in the box which said that they were able to reproduce the problem and they replaced the system board. (Not a whole lot more info, really helpful...) I then reinstalled the HDD and battery and fired it up. [In case you're wondering, they had told me I could take the HDD out before I shipped because I was complaining that I didn't want it to be reformatted, which is part of their repair process. I had tried to back it up with a small enclosure but the pin configuration was totally different.] Anyway, it ran like a champ. NOT! It gave me a message that I thought was an error. Something like "Battery draining, please wait." That's not it but I can't remember what it was. So I called HP tech support. They did some checking and told me that they needed to ship me a new battery and that I'd have to pay a collateral with a credit card and return the old one after the new one came. I told the woman that this was a new laptop and that the battery was good. She checked some more and then told me I had to ship the laptop back again. Aaaarghh! I said ok so she patched me over to "Hardware". The guy in hardware started asking me a bunch of questions and had me try restarting without the battery. When I did, a menu came up asking if I wanted to run 1 of 5 tests, one of which was a battery test, which he asked me to try. It didn't help much so he completed the call and told me I'd be receiving another box and label in 1-2 business days. After I hung up I needed to chill so I went and ate dinner and drank a beer or 2 (sorry such a long story!). I decided to try the test with the battery in and it was then that I noticed that A CD WAS SPINNING UP EVERY TIME IT POWERED UP!!! I am such a moron! HP tech support are morons!! The CD is theirs! I took it out and booted up just fine.

The moral of the story is that you should chill and drink beer before you work on your laptop. Also that warranties are good and HP has a pretty quick turn around time. Anyone want a really scratchy HP test CD?

So nice to have my system working again! Woohoo. (mmmm..beer)

Hey! thanks for sharing your story, it really gives us a heads up and the unpredictability of our machines. But yeah, I have heard a lot of bad things about tech support, not just HP by the way, many others. But anyways, it was very nice of you to post your story, and its nice to see you got it working again.

I just opened my brand new dv 6365 today, I noticed one strange thing (no buzzing/humming!) but the monitor seems to flicker once every 10-20 minutes randomly.

It just seems like it shuts off for a moment, the monitor, and then turns right back on.

    What gives?

That's pretty weird. I would go to hp.com and make sure I have the latest drivers, particularly the video driver. If you do, then something is malfunctioning. I would call HP tech support and probably seek to exchange it.

    Hope you the best.

My aunt's dv2000t was doing the same thing when I was testing out a movie on it. It did a single flicker every once in awhile. Drove me nuts, but she never noticed it. I'm clueless as to what was causing it.

    Hello everybody,
I have a serious problem on my 3 month old HP DV 6286ea.
Yesterday while I was checking my emails the screen has gone totally white! The computer didn’t crash just the screen gone white. I had to press the power button to log off and enter the welcome/change user vista screen. But when I logged in again the problem appeared again after a few minutes. I tried many times but the problem remains
The only way possible to bring the screen back is logging off or hard resetting the computer. But the problem appears again after a few minutes. Sometimes the display goes white even while booting! The boot process completes ok (I can hear the hdd loading and the vista welcome sound) just the screen goes white.

Do you have any idea what may cause the problem?
Does anybody else have this problem?

Please help me! I just don’t know what to do. I would like to know if there is any solution before sending back the notebook to HP.

    Thanks
    Marengo

It sounds like a graphics problem. Can you boot into safe mode without the screen turning white?

No I haven't tried this yet.I don't have the laptop with me now.I will try it when i get back home.
Sorry but I can't remember what key I have to press to boot in safe mode. Can you please tell me that?

Searching on google, I have found other people with the similar problem on some old HP notebooks.

One guy seems to have found that the problem lies in the HP connector design of the screen. It allows the connectors to move slighly and therefore the contact oxidates at the connectors. That is also why it sometimes works, and sometimes not.
He even found a solution that seems to work and helped a lot of people with the same problem. Please read this link:

What do you think?Do I have the same problem or do I have to search somewhere else?

Congratulations. I hope you enjoy it. It's interesting what you wrote about the QDS screen. I thought that was one of the " good" ones. ;) I have an SEC, which is supposed to be one of the " bad" ones  , but it looks pretty good to me also.

I have an SEC Matte and it's nothing to toss a rock at. The HP supplied graphics card driver allowed for no manual screen adjustment but for the F-keys. I downloaded an nvidia file from drivers-R-us and can now adjust every aspect of the display. It can get really bright now as needed in a super bright office inviroment. Before the new driver I had to peg it and it would just do.

When I was shopping for a new laptop back in February, I checked out several brands and models of laptops to find one that had a good keyboard, screen, design, and features. My last laptop was an HP, but it was six years old and I knew a lot could have changed over the years.

To my surprise the HP line was actually the best of all the models in my price range (around $1500 CDN). I read about the different screens in the DV6000 series and decided I would buy locally so I could check the model before buying it. I went to Futureshop, Bestbuy, etc., and found the display models had AUO screens. So when the model I liked went on sale the next week, I went in and had them open the box and plug it in to make sure it "worked" before taking it home. I checked the screen under Device Manager and it's an AUO as well...very nice screen - the best I've used so far, even though the gloss can be a bother in the daytime (tilting the screen a bit to cut glare does the trick anyway).

I'm very happy with my dv6265ca model...it has more than enough performance for my needs.

    :D

Thanks for the link. Do you notice any unintended consequences of the tweaks-r-us driver, such as extra heat?
