No. won't work.

Has anyone figured out how to do the manual switching of video cards? I'm researching this for weeks without success
-
At the moment it's not possible on dv6/dv7. HP is supposedly working on a BIOS update that will enable us to pick which card is on. So, just keep your fingers crossed for the time being...
-
Why is it some models of the dv6/7 don't have the problem with the 6770?
-
Oh so the AMD processor itsnt affected since it has mux. I see now
-
There has to be a mux for there to be the possibility of manual switching.
So there should be a mux to somehow reroute dynamic switching and manual switching and then another mux to allow manual switching between IGP and 6770m. -
Hey guys.

Uh not really that.
It's an in house thing since AMD knows their own products better than they do with Intel.
They can do more with their own stuff than they can do with Intel Chipset directly. -
The Llano setup does not have a multiplexer (the word mux is really starting to annoy me). It routes everything through the APU, Crossfiring the 6750 when needed. Difference being that in the Intel unit, the IGP is not actively processing when the 6770M is active, while in the AMD setup, both are performing GPU duties.

When i updated to 11.7b from the first page.Catalyst Control refuses to open. Any fix?
-
@primeboss I'm having the same issue... I've had this issue whenver I do an update that isn't an official HP update. The only way I've found to bring back CCC is to uninstall the drivers with driversweeper then go back and install the ones from HP's website. Unfortunately, that means you don't get the 11.7b drivers.
Does anyone else know how to fix this? -
So no fix?
-
Now that you have the HP driver set reinstalled...there is a way to update and keep things intact.
Download the full package 11.7 Mobility drivers. Now, with the HP drivers still installed...Install the 11.7 package. While doing this, choose to do a custom installation. Choose to install ALL EXCEPT Catalyst Control Center. That will leave the CCC from HP intact and still working. Once you have done this, everything will update and you should be able to access CCC as well. Now if you want the 11.7b, which only updates Game profiles...do the same kind of install. Make sure NOT to install CCC
Try that... -
At this rate, more likely never. But hopefully, it will be future proof for driver upgrades. Otherwise, the fixed mode option will be useless. It's HP so wouldn't be surprised.
-
I never installed the 11.7 package and just went straight to 11.7b. Was I wrong in doing that and should I install the 11.7 package or does it not matter?
-
I find the 11.7 Mobility Catalyst drivers and even the 11.8 previews (which have to be modded for Mobility). I see no 11.7b. There is an 11.7 Cap 1, which is a profile updater for a few games...I think the 11.7b were a beta release and are much older than the actual 11.7
Get 11.7 Mobility here:

Actually 11.7b was the 11.6 Hotfix. It is still later than the 11.7 WHQL.
Kinda funny now, I see more failed update of the AMD drivers for the dv6/dv7 than success now. -
So I haven't checked on this in a week. Are we still waiting for the BIOS update? Do we know when it will come?
-
those 11.7 drivers actually made WoW run worse for me so i reverted back to the ones on the HP site
-
Its August already and still no sign of the bios update?
-
Yea this sucks
-
Since this problems seems to be very wide spread i thought id just add my two cents.
So i just recently got a brand new dv6tqe (not knowing the current issues) and i am experiencing roughly the same issues as the rest of you but with one small detail. When i formatted and reinstalled windows i let windows update get the intel hd drivers as well as the radeon graphics drivers. Then i updated to the latest 11.8 catalyst preview drivers and then i installed RIFT. Now when i first ran the game i got a window asking me to configure the game in the catalyst control panel. So i set it to high performance and then hit apply. I then ran the game and to my surprise it actually switched to the 6770m gpu, i was so happy lol. Unfortunatly as soon as i closed the game and re-ran it it seemed to revert back to the intel hd graphics card. I could notice the difference because i was getting 40+ fps on ultra settings at 1080p but the second time i was only getting 15 fps. I then tested this theory with a couple other different games, such as starcraft 2 and crysis 2, and the same thing happened as well. So just for the h3ll of it i tried switching the profile in the CCC from performance to power saving and then ran the game again and then exited the game and changed it back to performance, but that did not fix it.
If you ask me this just seems like a simple driver software malfunction and that's all. I would be completely satisfied with the dynamic switching if it would just work properly. If they release a BIOS update and just allow users to switch from the intel integrated to the 6770 that would not be very convenient because every time you wanted to play a game you would have to go into the BIOS. If they just fixed the problem with the driver software i am sure it would just work fine IMO.
Anyways like the rest of you i hope to see a fix soon because this laptop is useless without the use of the 6770m gpu and i am getting to the end of my rope. -
This is infuriating. The 6770 works FINE for MOST GAMES. At no point were you running Crysis 2 or SC2 on ultra with 1080P at 40 FPS. People are just making things up at this point.
-
I did not say i was running crysis 2 or sc2 on ultra 1080p at 40 fps, i said i got those results while playing RIFT, my apologies, maybe i should have worded it differently. I am not lying about my results, why would i?, I can prove my results if necessary.
I have tried everything to get this working properly. When i first got this laptop i immediatly tried playing RIFT and i can tell you for a fact that it was not switching GPUs. Hell even when i ran the windows 7 experience index assessment it gives the results with the intel hd graphics. I have used all the official drivers from HPs website as well as the latest available drivers from AMDs website and the GPUs do not switch. -
I would check HP CoolSense for Performance Optimized and set your Power Options to High Performance.
Edit: Also I have heard that Rift is a fairly graphically intensive game. I have my doubts you were ever running Rift at 40 FPS on ultra settings at 1080P. -
There are no issues with the 6770 in Direct X games. The Intel GPU always drives the display, so a lot of utilities will report that as the GPU even though the 6770 is doing the processing. I recommend reading the FAQ sticky to learn a bit more about this issue.
-
I still can't play CoD 1. WHEN THE HECK IS THIS FIX COMING OUT?
-
Congratulations.......................
hp just relased bios update version F.1A
- Fixes an intermittent issue where the battery does not property recharge. - Adds support for switchable graphics fixed mode. -
I can confirm: HP just released (and by released, I mean gave me after I pestered Customer Support for) a BIOS update. Installing now...
-
Its 4 Minutes Later And You Have Said Nothing!
Get Your sh*t Together!
;-) -
Wait, it's out now? HOW DO I GET?
-
HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) HP Pavilion dv6t-6100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
That's the link to the update, but I don't see any difference. It explicitly says on the page that switchable graphics support for fixed mode IS enabled. But I cannot seem to figure out how to enable it yet. More on that later as I tinker with this.
EDIT: It's actually in the BIOS settings. When you boot up, hit ESC at the HP logo, F10 for BIOS settings, then move over to System Configuration>"somethingsomethingsomethinggraphics" (i was too excited to read it, but it said) > DYNAMIC. Switch it to FIXED and boot up.
You should now be in business. Get back to minecrafting, fellow g33ks.
EDITEDIT: I had to run a system restore (nothing serious, maybe just rebuilding the registry to reflect the new hardware changes) on startup, but YMMV. -
corey is correct! It works!!!!!
-
Did you test it out? Does minecraft work? Can you overclock the graphics card?
-
That's awesome. Even if this doesn't allow for overclocking the card, just having switchable graphics is a huge relief.
-
Idk about minecraft. I am trying overclock now
-
yes overclocking works!
Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
YES! Call of Duty works now! I feel like a boss! And when you right click the desktop and choose configure switchable graphics it looks different now, allowing you to choose which one to use.

What is a good bench software to make sure the OC is working?
-
This is great news. Can someone run 3dmark benchmarks with some OCs?
Edit: LOL ^^ answered your question - 3dmark11 and 3dmark vantage. -
Looks like someone needs to start a discussion on OCing this bad boy.
-
I will run some benches
-
yepp - con247 - you might want to start a new thread titled "overclocking the 6770m" or something along those lines
-
Good idea. Ill put up a tutorial and stuff.
-
So... the update works, though it hung for 30 minutes. Eventually I rebooted manually and the option was there. With only the BIOS update (I have the official HP drivers) the dialog is now correct.
As a note, by default firefox looks horrible with the dedicated card. I had to force it to use acceleration and now it looks great! (I think it's a text rendering problem).
EDIT: the text rendering is broken elsewhere (Where else but Minecraft). I'll try to figure this out. It seems like text is rendered well, then gets progressively blurrier as other options like selecting text occur.
Examples of degrading text quality:

I'd appreciate that.
-
That sounds like the opposite - you sure you didn't turn off acceleration to get it to work? Typically fonts being messed up in firefox are because it is using GPU acceleration and Windows Cleartype isn't calibrated properly
-
Make sure you turn of MLAA in the GPU settings... That sometimes messes up the text.
