I was referring to uploading all the drivers somewhere. Plus I'm not the one paying the bills.

ahhh i didn't know drivers were that big as the one posted earlier was like less than 1mb

what does not paying bills have to do with uploading a lot? lol

    good write up btw!

would be nice to have the brighness working ... could save some battery power

is it possible to use the program to make a driver backup of the files that could affect the brightness

I might be getting a replacement laptop from HP, the HDD in this one is loud as anything. That would be my 3rd one. I'll reinstall XP from scratch following my guide and update it as required with direct links to all drivers I've used. I fail to see why I need to upload anything when you can download everything you need, and I have provided most links. My drivers folder is nearly 200mb.

Nonetheless, I will retest and provide full links including version numbers. Will be interesting to see if brightness works on the new laptop....

    3rd laptop? all dv5t-1000 ???

I understand that you can not upload all the drivers i kind of wished to get the brightness fix related ones.
If it is not possible we will wait till you get the replacement in.

you might want to back up your drivers ....in case you cant get the brightness working ;-)

    thanks for sharing your insight

I have 1280x800 9600 GT. There are no user configuration options here in NZ, only 3 set models. The only drivers that caused my brightness to work is that RAR link I posted linking to Rapidshare. I dunno what it did or how it works, or why it seems to only work for me. I'm running 177.92 nVidia drivers from laptopvideo2go.com

If you guys have time, I suggest trying a fresh install following my guide in post 1 and see what happens. I didn't do this for this 2nd laptop, I restored an XP image I had made from my first laptop. The first one had a crappy DVD eject button, this one has a very loud HDD. Both have interference issues from the headphone jacks, but it seems they all will. I can find a work around for this by using a 2 pin AC plug and an attenuator (although the problem shouldn't be there in the first place IMO, it seems most laptops suffer from some sound interference).

In which case you will need to either do a fresh install, or remove every trace of QLB from your system and registry - good luck with that one. I have however since installed QBL, and my brightness still works, so I fail to see why one needs to be installed before the other.

There are drivers for the fingerprint reader that install ok, but the software to log and store the fingerprints is vista only. DigitalPersona say an XP version is coming soon, I emailed them and they think about 1-1.5 months. But you will need to buy it from them by the sounds of things. I've tried several other laptop's software, such as ThinkVantage (IBM), UPEK (dell) and I an older version of DigitalPersona (2.0) for the MS USB fingerprint scanner. None of them work since they don't recognise the hardware on the dv5t. There might be something else out there, if anyone can find a laptop that uses the same hardware. I've tried the HP stuff for their business laptops, but didn't have much luck their either.

Issues left as I see it:
1.IR Remote not working although drivers installed ok
2.ProtectStore HDD software doesn't install under XP, so no HDD protection
3.Latest nVidia driver has sub-par performance when powermizer is enabled. Disable it. The PowerMizer settings might be able to be tweaked to adjust the reduced power mode performance.
4.HDMI audio does not work. The driver installs ok but is not selectable as a sound source. Apparently due to the UAA bus driver for XP.
5.Fingerprint reader driver installs but currently no software available for XP. Apparently this is to be released in the future.

No but I don't really see it as an issue; sure the light is always orange, but the mute function on/off still works ok. It would be nice to have the light work correctly, but given that it's the audio driver that apparently controls this, there probably isn't much we can do unless there is a driver update.

BTW, it appears that the windows update IDT audio driver doesn't work with the internal mic. I loaded the swsetup audio driver and internal mic works (testing was done with skype).

Man, I think XP isn't an option for me....

My dv5t came with the base wireless network card, and I don't see any drivers for it. The Intel's don't work. Any ideas?

Also, does my blu ray drive need any special drivers?

I think I might have to convert to the Vista dark side.....! :(

That Verisoft Access Manager does appear to work with the fingerprint scanner. Not for me at least. It detects a user password as the only logon credential.

So I've installed XP and everything has gone fine up until this point: I'm trying to install the UAA Bus Driver and it says
"An error (-5011 : 0x80040707) has occurred while running this setup.
Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications. If the error still occurs, please contact your vendor: Hewlett-Packard.
    Error Code: -5011 : 0x80040707
    Error Information:
    >SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (524)
pAPP:Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio
    PVENDOR:Hewlett-Packard
    PGUID:81BB112E-C4DF-4CDF-ADB4-21D26219F112
    $7.1.100.1248
    @Windows XP Service Pack 3 (2600) BT_OTHER 0.64"

Any idea how to fix that? The Realtek Audio installed fine, but I don't have any audio because of this. Similarly, when I try to install the Intel Matrix it says "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software. Setup will exit."

XP SP3 does NOT need the UAA bus driver installed, as it already incorporates this patch. If you have a dv5t, why are you installing Realtek audio? Does it actually work? dv5ts have IDT audio. See post 1. You probably don't have any audio since you're using the wrong audio drivers, not because of the UAA bus driver.

    I'd definitely appreciate that! ;)

I've been watching this thread for a few days and I must say you guys did a great job of getting XP to run on the dv5t!

In fact, I'm going to buy me one of these laptops in the next weeks now that I know I can run XP on it - this should be a sweet laptop with great specs and a familiar OS.

I hope you guys can help me out with any questions that may come up at that time.

    Best regards

[I went ahead and made the guide. Let me know anything I should tweak and I'll edit it.]

I'm going to be absolutely exaggeratedly simplistic here, just to make sure I list every single step possible, so bear with me. My hope is that anyone reading this knowing almost nothing about computers will be able to follow the guide step-by-step and not have any problems. I'm assuming that you save everything to the desktop. Note that you will lose EVERYTHING on your computer, so back up whatever you want to back up. Print this guide out too.
So here it is, the absolute complete idiot's guide to installing XP on a dv5t, with a million thanks to Joshua Wood, since I took it all from him:

YOU WILL NEED: Windows XP CD with VALID CD key (unless you plan to crack it), external USB hard drive, DVD burner, blank writable DVD, wireless connection

1: If your XP CD does NOT come pre-loaded with service pack 3, download this http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&displaylang=en
It will say on the front of your XP disk "Includes service pack 3" if it does.

    2. Backup your swsetup directory to a DVD while in Vista. (I didn't do this because I'm a complete idiot so this will be the last time I mention it, refer to Joshua Wood's guide on the first page for more if you did do it, I'm sure it's much easier that way)

    3. Download/install Winrar from http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm (I used WinRAR 3.80 beta 5)

    4a. Download f6flpy32.zip from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=2101&DwnldID=16013&lang=eng
4b. Make a folder on your desktop titled SATA
4c. Extract the file in 4a with Winrar to your 4b folder (right-click the file and click Extract files, and find the SATA folder on your desktop)

    5a. Download/install nlite http://www.nliteos.com/download.html (I used top download link)
5b. Put your XP CD in your disk drive.
5c. Make a new folder on your desktop entitled Windows XP
5d. Open nlite. Click next until you get to Locating the Windows installation. Click browse. Click the drive that has your XP CD in it. When it asks you to select where to save the CD installation files for modification, browse to the empty folder you made in 5c. Click ok. Click next once it finishes copying.
5e. On the task selection screen, click Service Pack (Skip if your XP CD comes with SP3), Drivers, Bootable ISO, Next
5f. (Skip this step if you skipped step 1) On the Service Pack screen click Select and find the EXE you downloaded in step 1. Nlite will patch SP3 into your XP install.
5g. On the Drivers screen, click Insert, Single driver, find your SATA folder from step 4, and open the iaAHCI.inf file. This will bring up a list of files. Choose "ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
5h. On the Create a Bootable ISO screen, click Make ISO, save to your desktop. When it says "ISO created successfully!" click next and close nlite.

    6a. Download/install ImgBurn from http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
6b. Take out your XP CD and put in your blank DVD
6c. Open ImgBurn, click Write image file to disc.
6d. File -> Select a source file -> find the ISO file you made in step 5. Make sure under Destination it has your CD drive listed. If the disc pictures under Destination light up, it means you're ready. Click that, let it work. When the drive pops out, push it back in, click OK, let it finish. When it's all done, close ImgBurn.

    7. Download http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng and copy it to your external hard drive.

8a. Go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php?t20809.html and click Driver and download it. Right-click it and click "unzip here." It will make a folder titled 179.13
8b. On that same page click Modded INF and download that, then move it into the 179.13 folder. It will ask you if you want to replace the existing file. Click yes.
8c. Copy this folder to your external hard drive.

    9. Go to http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng and download it. Right-click -> Unzip here. It will make a folder called Disk. Copy this folder to your external hard drive.

Now the fun part! Make absolutely sure you have the 3 folders I mentioned in the last 3 steps on your external. Time to format.

    10. Reboot your computer. If it says "Press any key to boot disc" or something, push a key. If, on the other hand, it loads to your desktop and you do not get an option to load from disc, then you have to reboot again and click ESC to go into your computer's BIOS to change the boot order so that the first thing that boots is your CD drive. I don't remember the exact steps I did this, so I won't list them here, but suffice to say it was pretty obvious what I had to do. Anyhow, press a key. It will load a while. Press enter when it asks you to. Highlight your C: partition (if that is your internal hard drive's letter. Make sure you do not delete the wrong partition, it may be the HP backup or your external!) and press D, then L. Move down to Unpartitioned Space and push C. On the next screen, push Enter. You will have a new raw partition. Highlight the new raw partition and hit enter. On the next screen, choose NFTS (probably the only option available to you.) You now have to wait a LONG *** TIME.

    11. When it's done formatting, put in all your information. When you finally get to your brand new Windows XP desktop, open your external hard drive, and drag the three folders from steps 7-9 to the desktop.

    12. Run the infinst_autol program. It's straightforward. Reboot.

    13. Open your 179.13 folder and find Setup and run it. Reboot.

    14. Open your Disk folder, open your Disk folder, then XP, then Drivers, then x32, then run iProDifX.

    15. You should now have wireless internet. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update, and install everything it tells you to. Reboot. Run Windows Update again. Go to the Hardware tab on the side, and download everything under that. You now should have all the drivers you need!

    16. Go to Start -> Control Panel. Click "Switch to Classic View" on the left-hand tab. Open IDT Audio Control Panel. Click "Enable Power Management" (just once, so that the green light turns off.)

    17. Download http://rapidshare.com/files/144763668/Btn_lancement_app_direct.rar and unrar it, then right-click the inf file and click Install.

You are now free from the horrible scourge that is Vista! Rejoice.

lich, I note you install the windows update IDT audio driver. Does your internal (web cam) mic work? Mine didn't appear to, but using the swsetup folder audio driver caused it work all ok. Using this driver, there is no control panel icon to disable power management, but I didn't notice any pop issues recently, but did not fully check it out either. (Currently back in Vista)

I also wish to reiterate that my guide was not all my own work - a lot came from the dv7t forum.

Futher, there is a bios update for the dv5t that fixes the brightness issues under XP. Install this and do not use the brightness fix I posted in post 1. I will be updating my guide later to reflect this. (step 17 in your guide). See earlier posts for the sp number and link.

    Otherwise, nice guide for beginners.

Hello guys, I've been following this thread and the official owner's thread for the last 3 weeks, I finally got my DV5T last thursday and I hadn't had time to play around with it until today, and I found a driver for the Broadcom wireless card that works on XP! :)

You will need 2 things, the driver:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=ob-61972-1&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=447687

    and the Broadcom utility:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=ob-62662-1&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=447687

I needed both because after the driver installation my lappy could see networks but couldn't connect to them, with the utility it was able to.

Any other thing that I can help with let me know :)

Also thanks to lich, joshua_wood and everyone else for your guides and tips.

    Helo Joshua Wood.
I've launched HDMI Audio on TV. I've installed XP pro SP3, graphic card drivers 175.76 and NVIDIA HDMI Audio device by selecting the folder containing diivers downloaded from HP website (you download gf9600 driver for win vista on your hard disk and unpack it).
When I installed all devices, I've connected TV lcd with hdmi cable, and when the image appeared on the tv screen- next control panel/sounds and audio devices. There's an audio bookmark there. As a default sound playing device I've choosed nvidia hdmi audio from the list and applied. And the sound works on TV. After disconnecting TV, on the list choose idt audio again, and after connecting with hdmi cable, nvidia hdmi audio. I hope the description is clear and you'll succeed.
    Regards

ps. i have HP pavilion dv5-1060ew
ps. Another problem occured and I can't find informations about it...I've got the same Internet Explorer icons put on files and folders when I run dvd/cd data disks. Rebuild Shell Icon Cash restores original ones but after restart I still have IE icons. Anyone had such a problem?
