Joshua I can totally understand. I've 'upgraded' from a cheap office hp compaq and there is a list of things that irritate me about the dv5 which is supposed to be a superior model! Keyboard on dv5 is mushy by comparison, button to eject optical drive is flush and irritating to use, left palm rest gets insanely hot if you've got a 9600m gt and stressing it and also hdd seeks are louder. My sound refuses to be perfect under xp and the volume adjustment "ding" being an "ing" shows me the audio isn't playing the first split second of sound. *If I rapidly click the volume control to create a constant noise I will get the full "ding". My compaq plays sound far better. At the moment I'm duel booting xp and vista and after having gotten pretty in depth with vista's functionality I can say I'd still prefer to use XP by default and vista as secondary. Vista requires more burrowing to get to the options computer savvy people want and seemingly renames a heap of options for the sake of it. It doesn’t really offer me much at this stage.

edit- after updating bios to the latest one offered, my fan pulsing has gone and peak temp is down to 79 degrees from usually 85+ so that's great. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...cc=us&product=3756657&os=2093&lang=en&ts=true

I also calibrated my screen using this website http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ It made a massive difference to my enjoyment of this laptop and showed that gamma was rediculously high by default washing out the colors and making text reading a pain. Much much better now.

    Hy,

Because is the first reply in this topic I want to say that my dv5t-1000 laptop is: intel Core2Duo P8600 (25W), Gforce 9600GT, 1280x800 Infinity display, 250GB hdd, Wifi 5100AGN+BT , IDT audio (is standard for this type of laptop !?), dvd-write with lightscribe, 6 cell high battery. I bought this in USA last month and now I'm staying in Europe, so no warranty, that life :(

I installed WinXP SP3 step by step described in the start of this topic (with sata drivers introduced in image using nLite). I found some goods and bads after that.
I will start with the good news that I encountered after the process.
I do not have any problems with Brightness at all. That worked without the intel chipset or graphic card drivers ... interesting, may the last bios done that.
The hdd is very silent, the dvd-rom button is working OK.
Quiet ventilation and both pipelines for CPU and GPU use same ventilation; I have an chill pad too, for gaming times and works very well.
The display has 0 (zero) bad pixels.
The performance are very good, cpu and graphics. The audio is working.

    The bad things are:
The IDT audio is very tricky. In XP no advanced options for audio. But the worst is that the volume controler touchkey from the touchpad line (the bottom of lcd, near the the junction) stop to work and mute my audio completely, after an undetermined period of time or after many repeated up/down use. That touchpad keys stop to function. I stop the 3RVX program (volume controler display program) but not there is the problem.

Some time this became tricky; is that the volume controler is blocked to a level and the audio is still working and heard (I see that using windows volume controler, default in windows). The touchkey you can move it up from 30 to 50% (for exemple 30% is the blocked level) but comes back immediately to 30% after you finish the slide move with the finger on the touchkey. The same effect if you want to volume down using the touchkey. From winxp software controler the volume can be modified with no problem and the level of sound is correct. The MUTE touchkey doesn't work. The Wireless touchkey doesn't work too. I mention that the touchkeys are very clean and laptop is clean

WORKAROUND: Restart the windows (thats not a good one) or hybernate the xp and restore it back.
I encountered situation were the touchkey produce an flicker up and down of my master volume level. The flicker is like 5% and is moving up/down like 3 or 4 times per second. This one can not be stopped modifying the volume master control from software using xp.

I mentioned that the remote control is working in winxp (I press the arrows up/down, left/right and ENTER key from my remote control). The driver still has a problem in Device Manager for ENE infrared receiver (an exclamation mark).

I tested the HP dock station in XP and is ok and SD-card reader in XP.
I will test the e-sata, and high bandwidth USB traffic next week.
I do not test the firewire, Agere modem, HDMI.

AND I NEVER WORK ON VISTA BECAUSE USE A LOT OF RAM AND CPU FOR NOTHING. Maybe just for an game with directx 10 :p, but nothing else. Regarding networking Vista is with nothing better than XP.

If somebody can understand this problem and find a good solution, because I'm not an software developer, I'm a network tester and I will can test the 802.11n for this laptop. (for example).

Sorry for this big reply, but the only problem is with the IDT audio driver for XP and those touchkeys.

    Thanks!

Ok, go to laptopvideo2go*com/drivers (replace * with . in link) and download any one you desire for xp. I've installed 179.13 because it was the newest when I downloaded it. Download the "driver" and "modded INF" of the driver you want then read the instruction on what to do here laptopvideo2go*com/forum/index*php?showtopic=33

DONT just install the driver without using the modded inf or the driver won't work.

One of the several sound drivers that worked for me was this one

(Edit - added proper link now that I can) http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/search.aspx?q=idt
download and install the microsoft active x then download:

    Windows XP 9/5/2007 5.10.5607.0 1.9 MB

double click the file, select the contents and right click on them to extract them then direct the windows "update driver" (needs to be your idt device not hdmi) to that location.

*edit I still have faulty sound though, make sure you tell me if your sound works okay, especially that volume adjusting "ding" xp has. **edit. I notice you mentioned xp Pro, so you might want to try some of the 64bit drivers...

Would someone be so kind as to explain this bit in more detail, particularly step 4?

I don't really know what slipstreaming is. I have an XP Pro disk to install from with SP2. I take I'm supposed to make a disk with SP3 and the SATA driver and XP Pro. I have absolutely no idea how to do that.

I also have absolutely no idea why, after plunking down so much of my hard-earned cash, I'm being subjected to this. It almost seems vindictive of Mircrosoft. ("What? You don't love our new Vista with transpartent Aero windows (whatever good they do me)... well, then, we're gonna put you through a nightmare trying to downgrade. So, there! Squirm!")

    2.Download f6flpy32.zip from url downloadcenter*intel*com/Deta...16013&lang=eng url
    3.Extract somewhere
4.Use nLite to slipstream XP SP3 and the textmode SATA driver from the above file into a new XP install. The SATA driver is located in iaAHCI.inf and is called ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller

claire.laur, you can read in the 4 line of that post an link and there are much details steps explained.
For me works those steps very well.
And vista is just much beautiful OS than XP with and Directx 10, thats all! Resources are not an problems for Microsoft. They test Vista on super computers bought from Bill's money. :p

I installed either vista (ultimate 64bit) and XP (32bit) and made some benchmark, it looks that xp even with less memory (3GB) run better performance than vista.

the best driver I tested for the VGA (9600m-GT) for XP is the 179.13 and for vista is (180.41) but the benchmark are better for xp

Can you please advise what drivers if any you are using for the IR remote receiver? What name is listed in device manager even though it has an exclamation mark next to it? Do the play and stop buttons work?

I remember that the name is "ENE receiver", now I am at work and I'll post the exact name of that driver (and details) later from my laptop.

I'll test the E-SATA next week and came with the results.
Remember that my laptop is only 1 month old and has the last BIOS update (no brightness problems at all from the begining)

The name is "ENE CIR Receiver" and has an exclamation mark on it.
    Manufacturer: ENECIR Devices
    Location: on Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2
    The device status is:
"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."
    Driver Provider ENE
    Driver Date: 3/6/2007
    Driver Version 1.3.306.0
    Digital Signature Not digitally signed
    Conflict Device List:
    Input/Output Range 0380 - 0383 used by:
    Motherboard resources

You have right. On remote the button Play/Pause does not work. That is not nice. Only Stop button works, but unnecessary.
The touchkey from the laptop (between volume control and wireless on/off button) works for Windows Media Player. Even Play/Pause.
Maybe you can use this information for some debugging.

My battery is 6 Cells High Battery. But, if is 100% charged and is leaved for 14 hours out of my laptop and after those 14 hours I put my battery back in my laptop, I power it up using hibernating procedure (that means very fast, less than 30s) and then I read my battery level is 93%, I found that the level is very low. The conclusion is that the battery is 93% after 14 hours of just waiting (zero consume). I do not know if this is normal.

If i leave my battery in my laptop for approximately 18h (laptop is power it down completely) after boot up the level battery is 90% or 92%. Same manifestation! For 40 hours is 86% level battery. That is not so good.
Maybe only my battery do that but I will test that on a same HP Pavilion with 14inchs next time (my have 15inch)

What level battery is after 3-4 weeks ??? I can not test that! :p Insufficient resources for me! ...... maybe less than 15% :( .... yes .... I know is a stupid question, but for 5-7 days ??? .... it could happen in real situations!

I do not know if this is a normal manifestation of my battery level! Is it the same for you ???

I have a same laptop like you, just I purchase a dedicated video card 9600GT and in rest are quite the same.

    Problems with Win XP 32bits:
    1. No advance settings on IDT-audio card ( it works fine this way)
    2. The touch-pad buttons for up/down Volume is stop working after a time (maybe is just a software problem on my laptop). workaround: reboot; hibernate/wake it up, or some times works with just an standby
    3. The Blue-tooth on my 802.11N card is not detected by dedicated software for blue-tooth, and has an error when I open my Pan Network. But the connection to internet using BT over my phone works using Nokia drivers/software modem. I can not use that BT adapter to search bt phones.
    4. On the remote control is not working the play/pause button because was an memory address conflict this something from the winxp32. An exclamation mark is placed in the Device Manager for the ENE Receiver Infrared.

I don not tested the HDMI interface. Wifi 802.11N I do not tested, just Wifi b and g. Everything else I use/tested once.

You can ask for others feature of this HP laptop.

I use ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller and inserted this in the windows xp image using nLite before install the OS, the procedure is explained like in the first post of this topic. ( I used/done exactly and all that works)
I do not installed an special driver for that ESATA hdd Chieftec Case (with WD 500GB hdd inside ) or for USB use (that cases has both usb and E-Sata ports).

I am having trouble getting the install not to blue screen. I boot from the cd and it copies the files to the hard drive to install, then when it tries to boot from the hard drive to finish, it blue screens. I am trying to install to an external hdd (USB) if that makes any difference. I am using an iso I ripped directly from an XP Pro SP2 (OEM) disc, so it isn't modified in any way other than nliting the driver and sp3.

yes it does make a difference.
what happens during boot process is that the USB ports are temporarily disconnected... for like 1 second and because of that Windows fails to continue to boot.
    i tried it before.

If you unplug your external usb drive does it still blue screen? If it does it means your sata driver is incorrect when you slipstreamed it using nlite.

It doesn't blue screen when the drive is unplugged because it can't boot from a drive it can't access… The install CD with the slipstreamed drivers works fine, and I can boot from that, but that copies files to whatever hard drive you're installing it to, then you boot from that hard drive and it finishes the install. I was trying to install to a USB HDD, but I guess I can't do that. Hopefully I'll be able to boot from the drive via usb after I install over esata. Time will tell.

Right. I was wanting to make sure your cd actually worked on the internal hdd. I guess the only other option would be to try the esata connection as you mentioned. I take it your external hdd isn't notebook form factor or you would simply swap it with your current internal drive.

Yeah, I actually have a couple external HDDs, I was originally trying to install it on a PATA one (over USB), but since that didn't work, I'm gonna have to go with SATA over eSATA, then hope it will work after install over USB. I want to be able to use the esata while in XP. I also want to see how XP compares to Vista on this laptop, see if it's better or worse (less driver support vs. vista).

    @jakerock
are you installing it on the internal HDD? if so, make sure your copy of XP isn't modded in any way other than sp3 and the sata driver slipstreamed.

nope i am trying to install on the internal hardrive. Slipstreamed the ICH9M-E sata driver. I am hoping i slipstreamed it right because the hardisk is properly detected and OS installs fine. It only blue screens on me after the it reboots to finish installation.

    Not sure what esata is...
But booting a Windows XP installation from a USB drive natively will not work (according to my experiences....)
It will definitely work in VMWare or something like that.
This isnt specific to this laptop, its XP.

I remember researching and finding ways on how to do this... but I determined that it wasnt worth it in the end.

Okay, got windows XP installed finally. All drivers are working except sound drivers. Installed the UAA driver and the IDT driver from windows update. In device manager the IDT codec shows up with a yellow exclamatory mark and unknown device for high definition audio bus. any help?

esata is sata (the connection used for the internal hard drive), but its the external version. the dv5t has an esata port (at least mine does) shard with the usb port toward the read on the left side (thats why its larger than normal). And installing xp over esata worked just fine, and it will boot from esata as well. I hooked it up via USB after it was installed, and it was a no go. I seem to remember being able to boot xp from a usb drive on a different laptop of mine, I'll have to check it out.

Use your swsetup audio driver if you've followed the guide in post 1. Otherwise you can try this

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4094871&postcount=261

you will need to disable IDt power management in control panel to stop popping.

hey guys and gals, i've been following this forum for about a month now because i just picked up my dv5t about 2 months ago...i dropped a pretty penny to get one of the highest spec machines available

    T9400 (2.53Ghz)
    64-bit processor

I can't believe how ridiculously crummy vista is for power users...as i am typing this i am using my 2.5 year old dv9035nr which has been an absolute reliable workhorse for me, i DJ utilizing my laptop and a program called serato, i have been doing countless gigs with this dv9000 and winxp with no problems whatsoever

i was looking for a faster machine and guess what i got...a slower one because of vista, even setting the dv5t to the barebones, no fancy graphics, everything set towards performance, it's STILL slower than my dv9000! (i'm talking overall performance)

I have finally decided to take on this wonderful challenge of getting XP on my dv5t but wanted to get the most updated information from guys with a similiar or same machine, after scanning through posts in the previous pages is hard to decipher what exactly will work with my specific machine

i'm relatively familiar with the slipstream process and everything, i don't need everything to work, but it would great to get a current up to date summary of what has been resolved and what has not... i just need the machine to work reliably with my dj software as well as audio production on adobe audition

    thanks in advance! :)

Hi all i really appreciate this great effort ,,
i am on a dv5-1060ee thanks to lich i have successfully downgraded to xp sp 3 . ( i didnt backup the SWsetup from vista >< )

i still have some problems with the sound however .

in the device manager i have exclamation mark next to other devices :
audio device on high definition audio
    base system device
    base system device
    base system device
    hp integrated module
    unknown device

i downloaded the audio - IDT codec
but not the UAA because i was told that sp3 deosnt need it

i even tried to change the code in the registry to fool the system into thinking its sp2 to download the UAA but it didnt work

so i dont know if its a chip or a SP3 problem ?

i tried many things that i missed track of the drivers that i have downloaded . but i think i am missing somthing and i started the wrong way .
could some one tell me if i can start all over with the drivers
and get them the right way

    thank you in advance ..

The 3 base system devices is your card reader. If you have made your recovery disks you can always use them to restore vista and then backup your swsetup folder although that would take a while.

just to let you guys know, I'm now running vista and I've found a way to make it considerably more palatable. I did a clean install of vista without the huge amount of hp bloat. See thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228

Frankly the hp bloat is a big reason I didn't like vista. After getting rid of it and tweaking vista a bit here and there, turning off uaa, defender etc. it's a heck of a lot better. I simply borrowed a friend’s retail vista disk and used 'vlite' to slipstream my own disk with sp1. Everything from hp total care, games, Muvee and Works trial rubbish is gone and I even got rid of the hp partition for good measure and I have to say the system is infinitely better without all that. I was fortunate in that I had a friend who had a vista disk. It's the way to go if you aren't satisfied with how xp is working out on your laptop.

Basically a program called ABR can be used to back up your legitimate HP activation which you can then transfer to any vista install of the same operation version (home premium). Fully legitimate.

I also found out why my sound wasn't working properly under xp.

Basically it would have been power management (even though it was turned off) and I discovered it through vista. After 10 secs (or whatever you specify) power management will turn off your speakers in vista. I noticed when I would click something like a link, the first part of the clicky sound was missing in vista because the speakers hadn't turned on quick enough. If I clicked again within 10 secs the sound would be complete. If I waited longer than 10 secs the sound would not be complete because the speakers would have been turned off by the power management and didn't come on fast enough. Even turning off power management in vista with the timer set to 10 secs caused the same problem after 10 secs... I fixed it in vista by turning off power management and setting the timer to 0. Clearly the xp problem was that the speakers were turning off a split second after audio completed but if I clicked rapidly enough in xp I would get the full sound because it would turn into a string of sound. Anyway it seems like power management in xp was not completely turned off even though the setting showed it was.

Hi ume, I am not sure if you understand english (serious observation) but it seems like you have a good background in it.
The steps listed in this thread (that I linked you from my thread) are very straightforward. The drivers and the steps necessary to have a working XP installation on your dv5-1066 are all listed on page 1, the very first post.
Download all those drivers, save to USB drive or burn them to a disk before installing XP.

Yes, I was dual booting xp and vista. The sound under xp was too bad to justify using xp. HP vista is pretty rubbish. Cleann non hp, install of vista is much better if you can't get xp working.

And yes, the 3 base system devices are the card reader... to get the drivers that would work in xp for that device you can download the vista one from hp website and it should work under xp....
