If you're doing CAD get a PC with a Nvidia Quadro, not a Nvidia Geforce. I recommend the thinkpad W530:

Windows 7 has no problems with GPT as long as the boot mode is legacy.
For the Wifi, go on intels site and download the win7 drivers.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Se...-N+2230&ProdId=3507&LineId=1784&FamilyId=1783
For the SSD cache, you need to reformat it, and install expresscache here:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/expresscache_setup_64.exe
Also, here are the drivers for the y410p off Lenovo:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_CA/downloads/default.page? -
i've got a couple of questions about the y410p
1. Can you get another 750m and go sli with it?
2. Will you still have the option of going integrated whilst the second card is installed?
3. How long will the battery last whilst running sli and under stress (playing a game)?
4. I hear that the laptop went towards the m.2 standard for the ssd, where can i find an ssd (about 120gb) to have my OS on it while keeping the 1TB hdd for games and storage?
5. Does the SSD cache laptops also come in m.2 standard?
6. How hot does it get while playing games on max settings? With sli?
7. Does anyone know the hard facts about the release date of the Gigabyte P34G, im still on an edge between this laptop (y410p sli) and the P34G? Price for the 760m 1080p screen edition?
Thanks for your time, have to leave for college in about a month and i really would like a laptop with a graphics card setup that will be about as good as the 770m (750m sli according to Game-Debate)
Nvidia GeForce GT 750M SLI compare Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M GPU -
2. No
3. 3 hours max, id say 2 hours of games
4. NGFF, and im not sure, i looked on amazon and i couldnt find any, try calling lenovo
5. Y410p/y510p laptops use m.2 (NGFF), while Y400/y500 laptops use Msata
6. Warm, but the side vent area gets hot
7. Nope, sorry -
Don't get me wrong. I love this laptop. My only gripes are the glossy screen and the trackpad. Also, I do not feel this would survive a drop. But I do believe this machine is of very high quality and the performance of the processor is unmatched for the price. I got this laptop for $850 with tax from Lenovo with the 1600x900 and cache drive. If I were to do a Thinkpad with Haswell, I can imagine the price would be ridiculous which is also another possible deterrent. It'd probably be in the $1500 range and I just wouldn't be willing to pay that. Yours, or anybody's thoughts would be appreciated. I just want high performance and good build quality, that puts me in between a Thinkpad and a Y-Series -
1. You will probably have to get the 170W adapter
2. T440s will likely be a LOT more expensive (IPS+1080p+rollcage+touch isnt free) and will probably feature some Integrated graphics or a Nvidia Quadro, both are bad for gaming.
3. HD 5200 = 650m in terms of compute power, but in terms of video games, its only 40% as good as a 650m, and the 750m is essentially a 660m.
4. You answered your own question, and yes, the thinkpad will probably be $1500, probably more if you want IPS+rollcage+touch+1080p
5. The thinkpad will however have an optional 9-cell, which can give you up to 10 hours of battery life
6. The thinkpad will most likely be a dual core. Only thinkpad W's are quad-cores. Also, thinkpad Ts series have ULV processors, which improves battery life but lowers CPU power. -

hey 410p owners, does this model have overheating/throttle issues when gaming like older models? looking to pickup a 14inch laptop that can handle non stressful games like dota2 and getting rid of my desktop.
-
I just received my laptop last week and while playing Mirrors Edge the space where I rest my left palm gets extremely hot and the game began to lag intensely. Is this all the y410's or is mine malfunctioning. Playing games like LOL cause it to heat up but not as much and it doesn't cause any problems with running the game.

What backpacks are you guys using? Thinking of getting an Everki backpack

can you sli on y410p ?

I was playing without a cooling pad, although I do have the laptop elevated. Play time was no longer than 30 minutes before it was unplayable. I was playing on full resolution with high settings, could that perhaps be the reason? I thought this laptop could handle such a workload, I'm just trying to figure out if this is universal or if I should send this laptop back for a replacement.
-
Guys, please help with making a decision on this. I need a reliable laptop for college, I have a Y410p right now but I am thinking about returning it. The performance is nice, but I worry about the build quality/durability, plus it eats battery as you can imagine and the glossy screen can be bothersome depending on the lighting and is almost unusable in certain circumstances outdoors.
I was thinking of waiting for the T440s to release, because I am sold on the IPS screen with either the 1600x900 or FHD and the performance sounds decent too. But I am worried about when this notebook will be released since nothing is announced officially and school will start soon. Should I continue to wait for the new T440s or just jump on the T431s? The other thing I wonder is I have no idea what the cost is going to be for the T440s, and perhaps I can haggle on the T431s by being aware of its soon to be replacement. Anyone's thoughts would be appreciated.
As for my usage, it will be web browsing, working with MS Office and some programming. I initially got the Y410p because I wanted to game as well, but it seems I wouldn't be doing it much in reality and could just use an XBOX or something for that. Although, I do love the performance, from a technical standpoint, of the Y410p as it is nicely spec. Because I've had problems in the past, I have been working with someone in customer service who told me I can order anything I want with any discounts that I can haggle from sales, and that after that I would be given an additional 10% off on top of it after it shipped, or I could order from the outlet site and get a flat 35% off. As you can see I am in quite a decision pickle....
So my choices are keep the y410p, bought new for $721.18 with the discounts, it has i7 4700mq, 8GB RAM, tTB 5400 RPM + 24GB NGFF, Nvidia GT750M
Buy a T431s, I got a price of $755.10 for the base with the i5 3337U, 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200 RPM, HD4000 integrated graphics, probably upgrade to SSD after I bought it, like a Samsung 840 Pro.
Wait for T440s, or find a T430s or something like that off of the outlet and use a 35% in addition to outlet price, I have found most of these to be in the i7 3520M, with 4 - 8 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD to come out around $500-$750 refurbished. -
Buyer beware! If you are a Canadian customer, be aware that this laptop ships with a bilingual keyboard not the standard US English you see on the Lenovo US site. On the Lenovo CA site, it does not specify the keyboard layout the laptop comes with. After recieving my laptop, I had to call post-sales department and have it sent back to their warranty center in North Bay, Ontario for a keyboard swap. I also had a talk with sales and they said that all ideapads in Canada comes in bilingual keyboard layout and is not an option to have it changed to standard US English. The only option is to place an order in the US and have it shipped to a US address if you want US English layout. Or you can do what I did and send it back under warranty to have the keyboard swapped at their warranty center.

If you are Canadian and you want the US english layout over the Canadian Multilingual Standard, try buying one off Newegg or XoticPC/Use your warranty. -
Anyone play around with the Envy 15 screen, I heard the y410p was kinda washed out I want to compare there washed out ness .

Hi, so I'm strongly considering the y410p but I'm a little concerned about the track-pad. Is it really that bad? Also, to you owners out there, do you find the bezel to be that wide and bothersome?
-
-
I do not think the trackpad is bad at all. I have definitely used worse. I would say it is average. Some people prefer some type of texture or the ability to click a dedicated button. I actually find that I never use dedicated buttons and actually just gently tap to click instead of depressing the whole button down. I even did this on my previous Thinkpads. It will come down to more of your personal preference, but I would say the machine is very nice. I will be returning mine likely, in that I will not be gaming as much as I had hoped and my work requires me to have something a little less flashy lol.

Makes the laptop look really awesome, I have loved it, just picture it on the smaller Y410p. -
Anyone know how many monitors this thing can support via the HDMI port?
-
Can anyone tell me how the wireless connectivity is and some info on battery life? I wanna know if it would be okay to get for college. Thanks!
-
I'm not sure whether my question posted the first time so ill just ask again to make sure. Does anyone know how the wireless connectivity is and some info on the battery life? I want to know if this laptop would be good to take to college. Thanks!
-
Connectivity, meh. The 2230 isnt superb, and sometimes has issues if you are using the updated 15.8 drivers, but so far i haven't had any major problems with the 15.6 drivers.
Heck, im going to college next year, so im wondering the same thing -
-
Three questions for you guys.
1. Have the issues been ironed out getting Windows 7 working on the y410p?
2. How do I go about reinstalling Windows 8 if I install a SSD?
3. Any solution for the intermittent wireless issues? Just started popping up for me today.
Thanks! -
Looking forward to getting my y410p in 1-3 days. I've skimmed the thread, and here are a some things I'm still curious about:
1. I see people saying the WLAN card isn't very good, what would the advantages and disadvantages of replacing it be?
2. Does the laptop do WiDi?
3. Is there any information on when compatible M.2 SSDs will be release?
4. I'm considering getting a Blu Ray drive down the road. Will this be an easy upgrade?
5. I've never owned a laptop without external mouse buttons, how do you right click on the y410p?
6. Is it worth doing a clean install of Windows 8? Or is the bloatware easy to remove? Is there a complete list of the bloatware somewhere?
Thanks! -
Hey!
I was a derp and got some orange juice under a few of my keyboard keys, consequently, they don't work as well any more. Does anyone know if the keys can be removed individually without breaking them, or how to remove the whole keyboard if this is not possible?
Thanks, if you take the time to read this,
-Alex -
Joined this forum just to post on this page. I ordered my Y410p on 7/10 and received it on 7/18, despite Lenovo changing the expected arrival date from the 17th, to the 29th, back to the 19th.
First I will point out some of the obvious negatives.
- The WiFi was an issue the moment I took it out the box. The WiFi was incredibly slow and it would disconnect every 2-3 minutes, then reconnect again. This led to major frustration just trying to download Chrome and Firefox. After updating drivers and still having the same issue, I read in this forum that this issue may fix itself with time. So as a benchmark, yesterday, the laptop could not load more than 2 seconds of a YouTube video. This morning, I turn it on and now pages open much faster and YouTube videos load all the way. However, download speed is still slow and I am hoping it will continue to improve with time.
- Battery use is not that great. Sure, this has been said on this discussion numerous times, but I remained hopeful. From a 75% charge to 0% took about an hour to an hour and a half. This is using browsers and downloading applications, as well as deleting with PC Decrapifier. I have no knowledge of how this battery will last while in class, for I am also using it for college this upcoming semester.
- The keyboard and mousepad area, and the area around it, are finger print prone. With my right palm sitting to the right of the mousepad while typing this, it will leave a palm print on the plastic. However, the keyboard is made so that a baby wipe can very easily wipe the entire thing, due to the keys being nicely spaced and not crammed together, trapping any crumbs inside.
- It's a tad bit heavier than I expected. You'll definitely feel it in your backpack. Doesn't feel flimsy though.
And the pros:
- The backlit keyboard is gorgeous. As a student, this will be very helpful at night when my roommate is asleep and I need to an essay or simply browse the web. Typing in complete dark is very easy, and the lights get Oohs and Ahhs from everyone. Typing on it does make my fingers feel a bit stiff, but I will get used to it. Keyboard gets a 8/10
- The computer looks sleek. The back lid looks nice with its carbon fiber finish, but it's kinda disappointing that the plastic around the keyboard isnt the same finish. Would fix the fingerprint problem.
- It's very fast. With dozens of tabs open, I can still do other tasks on it with no lag.
- The heat is nonexistent when browsing. Further information will be provided when I begin gaming. -
2. To make the battery last longer, try using power saver mode, and set your laptop to only use the intel GPU. Because of this, mine can last up to 5 hours of typing/browsing with mid brightness. Also, by default, the Laptop will only charge itself to 60%, make sure to open Lenovo power management and put it to "Maximum Battery Life". Unless you were doing an intense game, i find it hard that you only had 1.5 hours of battery.
3. Its a bit heavy, but still lighter than my old inspiron. -
-
Can anybody help me on my Wifi issue?
"1. If you are having wifi issues, go to device manager, then find your card, open properties, advanced, then change the 802.11n channel to "auto". This will increase Wifi speed and lower connection problems."
This didn't work :/ -
2. Are you using SLI, single GPU, and are you using the intel GPU?
3. By default the battery charges itself to 60% to extend battery health, make sure you get a 100% charge -
Then disable bluetooth (in the Metro PC settings)
If that doesnt work, try uninstalling the Intel drivers and reboot the computer until the PC uses the 14.8 drivers by microsoft. -
2. Single GPU (intel).
3. I was at 100%, but regardless of where it started, it dropped 40% in an hour. -
-
Hey, a question
I can get a Y410 with the 14.0" 1366x768 screen, 750M GPU, and 3630QM. It also has only the stock HDD for $600 on craigslist, used. About 2 months old.
If everything is working well, is this a deal worth the risk?
Also, I have a 2.5' 64GB SSD I would like to use in addition to the HDD that comes with it. Is it possible to fit in both the original HDD and the 2.5' SSD?
Thanks! -
