Thank you.
What is a good way to make a recovery disk onto a DVD in case of HDD failure?

Thanks. How can I tell what is compatible with this machine? When I look on ebay I'm only finding things that are advertised as for the Thinkpads.

Ok guys....I'm really close to just taking the plunge and sending back the T430 to get the Y410p. I just have a couple questions to any owners out there. First, is the display (which I now know is glossy, is it bearable? Also, has anyone maybe used a matte screen protector on their display with positive results? Also, I have a Samsung 840 250GB SSD waiting to be installed. In this case, would the best option for me be to get the base model (with the 1600x900 screen without the NGFF SSD), since I am putting in the Samsung, or will I actually get better performance getting the 5400 RPM drive + NGFF cache drive? Or perhaps, would a better setup be to use the NGFF SSD as a cache drive for the Samsung SSD (if that is even possible with any actual benefit?) Also, again if anyone who owns this laptop would recommend this purchase please voice your opinion to me. I am really OCD when it comes to these kinds of things and I want to be absolutely sure that I will be happy with the purchase. The T430 after about a week of use has been pretty good, aside from the really crappy display on it. I am hoping that the display on the y410p will be much more vibrant and brighter. Although I really wish it had a matte display like they had originally advertised on the website.

hi guys ,i dont know if i buy or wait...Its better to buy Y410P right now with 40% promotion or wait for better promotion ? if i buy today its possible to receive until 1th august ?thankss

Hi -
First, thanks everyone for all the various posts, pros, cons, known issues, etc. I pulled the trigger and bought the y410p model 59369916 - the one with the extra 24 GB SSD and DVD (not blue-ray), 1600x900.
I know people have been saying that $829 is hard to pass up, and using the JULY4DOORBUSTER code gets it to that price ... but if you weren't aware, if you look on the page that shows all the y410p models, several of them say DOORBUSTER - but not all will suggest you put in the JULY4DOORBUSTER discount code, most will suggest the JULY4PRICINGEVENT code instead.
For example, if you click through on the one with the extra 24GB SSD, it suggests the JULY4PRICINGEVENT code ... BUT ... you can put in the JULY4DOORBUSTER code manually.
It will only work with those that have DOORBUSTER as part of the title the Y410p model page (note this will change in a few days, as this offer expires July 10, so if you're looking at the post later, be forewarned): IdeaPad Y410p High-Performance 14" Multimedia Laptop from Lenovo | Lenovo (US)
With the doorbuster (tired of typing all those caps) coupon on the 5939916, it comes to $879, which was worth it to me (and of course, tax is proportionally that much more too).
Who knows when I'll get it (they are currently saying July 18 ship date...), but I'll try to get back to post after it arrives.
Thanks again for all the helpful posts, and I hope this helps someone in return. -

is there optimus technology on this laptop? im getting conflicting information between the owners here and the lenovo agent. I had a chat with them and the guy said I would have to buy the T or W series for optimus. so what gives?

I could essentially have three internal drives?
One with the internal SATAIII, one through Ultrabay and one through M.2 NGFF Slot? -
You can grab Ultrabay Drive Caddies for 10$ on Ebay. -

Could someone please hook me up with a link for an ultrabay fan for the y410p.
I tried googling for it but failed.
Regards, -
i already searched and i cant find anything, is unavailable, for the heat just buy a cooling pad...
-
I have tried searching for the answer to my question, but haven't had much luck. I see people in this thread talking about SLI Y410p's, but I cannot find the option to buy a Y410p with dual graphics nor where I could buy the ultrabay graphics separately. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be great because I really want a Y410p, but only if I can get dual graphics.
-
I just spoke to Lenovo because I wanted to change my order to the SSD + HDD model now that I know the doorbuster coupon applies to that. The rep I spoke to said that the ultrabay accessories are still on their way...

btw , is it right lenovo y410p included Lenovo Enchanced Experience 8??
thx for your help -
Just joined this forum after using it extensively for research. I ordered my Y410p (900p, no ssd, $799 with student discount) yesterday, hopefully will receive it soon. I am not concerned with Windows 8 or the glossy screen or the touchpad, but there is plenty of information here for those who are. Was debating between this and the Asus G46VW from Best Buy for the same price, eventually used a pros/cons table to determine Lenovo a winner. The removable battery, upgradable graphics (hopefully), and better processor did it for me. Anyway, thanks for the professional information in helping me make this decision, and I will update my status on this purchase soon.

I have been reading along this thread with interest and enjoyment, learning about our new Y410p from you guys. I can't wait to get at the ultrabay mods which in my case, will likely be the SSD samsung is producing. I have no need for sli or anything else there. One comment I would like to toss out there is the possibility of replacing the SD media reader card with something like a couple USB 3.0 ports. Will that work in this notebook?
Thanks,
Harry -
I've been using my y410p for a couple weeks now, so I thought I'd share my thoughts in mini-review form. I have the model with SSD cache and 1600x900 screen. I'm also coming from a Dell XPS 15 (L501x) so that's my comparison point.
Construction: The construction is plastic with a faux carbon fiber look. It's fairly solid around the body, but the lid and hinge feel somewhat flimsy and flexible. The lid makes a creaking sound if you put any pressure on it (by the hinges, when closed). It's fairly heavy (~5.5lbs as noted) but easier to manage than the Dell, thanks to its 14" footprint instead of 15.6".
Keyboard & Touchpad: The keyboard is excellent - comfortable, responsive and not overly loud. The red backlighting is evenly distributed and looks sharp IMO. Unfortunately the same can't be said of the touchpad. Mine is the Synaptics model, using the Lenovo drivers (which appear to be newer than the ones on Synaptics website). Multitouch gestures are an exercise in frustration, and the overall responsiveness of the touch pad is sub-par. It's far from the worst touchpad I've used *cough*Asus UX31A*cough* and will work in a pinch, but you're much better off with an external mouse.
Screen: The screen is bad, but not terrible. Brightness is decent for indoor use, but contrast and vertical viewing angles are terrible, and color reproduction is pretty sad as well. I'm coming from the excellent 1080p screen in the Dell XPS 15, so it's especially noticeable. If you're not used to a nice screen you may not notice/mind as much, but if you're switching back and forth between this and something with a good screen it will probably bug you. The screen and bezel are glossy, and if Lenovo uses an anti-glare coating it doesn't seem to help much. Again, it's not the worst screen I've seen and you can certainly live with it - just don't get your hopes up. (On a side note, I wonder how bad the base 13x7 screen is, if this is the 'upgrade')
Battery: Windows generally gives me an estimate of 3 hours battery life under my normal workload (web browsing with ~20 chrome tabs, email client, Steam running in the background). According to my Kill-A-Watt meter, the y410p pulls 18/23 watts at idle (at min/max brightness) and around 61 at full CPU load (Prime95 with 8 threads). CPU temps peaked at 91C after 10 minutes of Prime95. TMax on the 4700mq is 100C.
Graphics: As many others have noted, switchable graphics is alive and well on the y410p. This is a work laptop for me, so I've only had the chance to play a couple casual games, but they've all worked flawlessly (no flickering). I'm using the 320.49 driver from Nvidia's website. I got the following scores in 3DMark: 71526 in Ice Storm, 9760 in Cloud Gate, and 1983 in Fire Strike. GPU temps peaked at 60C during the test.
Wireless: I haven't had any issues with wireless connectivity, but I can confirm that the BIOS is locked to prevent 'unauthorized wireless cards'. IMO this is a big middle finger from Lenovo, but it seems there are ways for the tech-savvy to get around it.
SSD: The caching SSD is a LITEONIT LSS-24L6G NGFF M.2 drive. It's visible in Device Manager, but not accessible as storage. I can't benchmark it, but given the limited number of NAND channels available on such a small device, any decent 2.5" SSD would be faster. It does make boot & sleep times very quick though.
Speakers: The speakers get fairly loud without getting distorted, but lack any real depth or bass. They fall short of the speakers in the Dell XPS, but are certainly competitive with the majority of laptop speakers. I'm using the 271 Realtek HD Audio drivers from Realtek's website.
In general I'd say this is a good laptop that makes some compromises to bring you an i7-4700mq & GeForce 750m for cheaper than anyone else (AFAIK). -
Is it just me, or is half of the shift key not lighting up. I received my replacement today for this issue (and a couple others). I must commend them on shipping it to me weeks in advance though. The scheduled date was late July.
-
The cache SSD is configured via the Intel RST drivers, I believe you can open up the RST application and disable the caching, then the SSD will appear as a normal drive and can be benchmarked. Then just re-enable the caching when done.tigercat44 likes this. -
Also, i agree with you. I have the 1600x900 model, but since the bezel is quite big, i end up having a lot of pixels on a tiny screen, so i usually have to tweak with scaling a bit.
Agree with the viewing angles. Side ones are great, vertical ones are bad. -
Is there any way to buy the Y410p with SLI graphics or to purchase a second 750m along with the laptop? I'd really like to buy the blu-ray equipped version and a second graphics card, or at least be able to order it with dual graphics, but can't find anywhere to do it, even though I see people in this thread talking about SLI. This will be my next laptop if I can get dual graphics in it.
-
Lenovo has not released the Ultrabay GPU for the Y410P yet, supposedly they will sometime this month.
-
I will give you my review in a week to contribute with new buyers..
Anyway, I deleted a lot of the bloatware through Control Panel Add/Remove Software... then I downloaded PC Decaprifier and CCleaner because I still have some software that I couldn't find in Control Panel.
I installed PC Decaprifier first, do a search, and it didn't find anything besides the software that was already listed on the Control Panel Add/Remove feature. After that, I tried installing CCcleaner but for some reason I can't run the program after installation.
So I decided to just delete both programs because I didn't find a use for them anymore...
To my surprise, I can't find them listed on Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and I don't have a clue how to uninstall this two programs.
Any clues that could guide me? Why aren't all the installed programs listed in Control Panel on Windows 8? Its really annoying.. -
How it Works | The PC Decrapifier
There is also a portable (no-install) version of CCleaner, so I wonder if you had downloaded that as well. -
For CCleaner, I think the installer was corrupted or something, I shall try downloading it again from another website...
Regards, -
It seems like my previous question got overlooked but does anyone know how to access the trackpad gesture option?
-
-
-
Type "eccmd.exe -info"
It will show the status of Expresscache.
Well, at least mine does. -
In the Features list for the Y410p, Lenovo says there is support for SPDIF digital audio output, but there is no mention in the User Guide of this feature. Does anyone know how to utilize the SPDIF output? Thanks.
-
You can check by turning on SPDIF and then looking in the headphone jack hole, should see a red light. -
Ok guys, I just received my Y410p today. Overall, my initial impression of the laptop is positive...but I have a couple gripes. First, the wide space of brushed metal in between the speakers makes a clicking sound if I push on it. When I look at it, it looks as if it is not seated to the frame tightly and no matter how much I push on it, it does not seem to alleviate it. I also notice this similarly where the battery connects. If you hold the battery its like the plastic covering is loose. Does anyone else have this popping sound happening with theirs? Should I call to get a replacement? Aside from that, I do like the size of this a lot better than the Y510p. Don't get me wrong, the display is way better on the Y510p, but the one on the Y410p is surprisingly acceptable. I ran HWInfo64 on it and found that the panel, like the Y510p, is an LG/Phillips panel. Perhaps Lenovo should consider using these panels in their Thinkpad series because they could desperately use them.
Overall, the build quality looks good. This machine seems more solid than the Y510p, and you actually don't get the clickpad rattling like you do on the larger one. However, I was already skeptical about build quality and these clicking panels are making me nervous. Again, has anyone else experienced this? And what do you think that I should do?
Also, if anyone was curious, I was surprised to see that Lenovo is now installing the HD4600 drivers from the factory. I could switch between graphics cards out of the box, which is something that I was not able to do with the Y510p. I had to manually install the drivers on it to get it to work. -

I'm pretty sure that the "clicking" problem you've described is a design flaw. I also have it and there doesn't seem to be a way to physically fix it since the battery is right underneath. Other than that and the somewhat flimsy lid, the laptop's base is very sturdy.

One more question for the techs out there. I would like to install my copy of Windows 7 on this laptop. But first let me ask this, I used the Recovery tool in windows 8 to make a recovery drive and did the check box for the recovery partition, to a USB drive. I'm not familiar with Windows 8, but should I want to restore my computer to factory, will this recovery drive do that? Basically, I want to know if the built in recovery drive can restore the system as it was. Assuming this is true, how would I go about installing windows 7 from my DVD?
-
I am also interested in downgrading to Windows 7 as some software I need does not support Windows 8. Is there a solution for this yet?

Hi all. I just got my y410p. I just have a question regarding the lid of the notebook. I'm not sure what mechanism is being used to keep the laptop lid close. Is it using a magnetic latch or is it the hinges? Cause my issue is when i hold the laptop sideways, the lid opens a bit. Seems that there's not enough force to keep it closed. Is it normal? Should I have it replaced?

2. Back up the contents of the LENOVO partition, those are your drivers
3. Go in the Bios, set the UEFI mode to Legacy, Secure boot off and boot mode legacy (not win8 64)
4. Insert Windows 7 DVD/USB and boot it
5. Do clean install
6. Install the drivers that were on LENOVO (install the intel graphics before the nvidia graphics to make sure optimus works)
7. Set up Expresscache to use the caching SSD (if any)
8. Activate Windows/Restore programs and files/etc.
9. Enjoy Windows 7 -

(copied from my personal review thread, thought someone would find this useful)
Im also adding here a comparison of THREE dell Laptops that compete against the Y410P:
(i was actually considering buying one of these three before i stumbled upon the Lenovo Y series)
Dell Inspiron 14z Non-Touch (high end config)
Price as configured: 899$
Intel Core i7-3517U (1.9ghz Dual-Core)
1366x768 Screen
AMD Radeon HD7570M (for the record this card is basically a Nvidia 710M) with 1GB VRAM
8GB Ram
500GB 5400rpm HDD + 32GB Msata
6Cell Battery
Intel Wireless 2230
Weighs 5.1 lbs
Dell XPS 14 Non-Touch (Base Config)
Price as configured: 999$
Intel Core i5-3337U (1.8ghz Dual Core)
1600x900 Screen
Intel HD 4000 (Insert joke here)
4 GB RAM
500GB 5400 RPM HDD + 32GB Msata
8Cell Battery
Killer Wireless-N, 1202
Weighs 4.6 lbs
Alienware 14 (Base Config)
Price as configured: 1199$
Intel Core i7-4700MQ (2.4ghz Quad Core)
1366x768 Screen
Nvidia GeForce 750M with 1GB VRAM
8GB RAM
750GB 7200RPM HDD (no micro-SSD)
6Cell Battery
Killer Wireless-N, 1202
Weighs 6.116 lbs
---------------------------------------------------
As you can see, these 3 Dell laptops, which are all more expensive than the Y410P, all have equal or lower specs for a higher price (minus the 8Cell from the XPS).
Heres the Y410P in comparison (Second Config):
Price as Configured: 849$
Intel Core i7-4700MQ (2.4ghz Quad-Core)
1600x900 Screen
Nvidia Geforce 750M with 2GB VRAM
8GB RAM
1TB 5400RPM HDD + 24GB NGFF SSD
6Cell Battery
Intel Wireless 2230
Weighs 4.85 lbs -

Well, I managed to fix the weird clicking problem. I first took out the battery and then opened the lid. After that, I applied a bit of pressure to the space between the speakers and heard something snap in place. After that, no more clicking noises.
