Ah, damn. Well this has actually made me interested in this laptop.
It's either this or the Sager 7730/7352.
I already own a 2.5' 64GB SSD I would like to use and this seems to support two 2.5' drive bays whereas the 14' Sager doesn't. Just curious about the screen differences now.
Thanks for the help!

You can check Lenovo's outlet site and get an officially refurbished y400 for around that price. Might even have some other add-ons like ssd cache/more ram/etc.
"Try uninstalling Intel PROset.
Then disable bluetooth (in the Metro PC settings)
If that doesnt work, try uninstalling the Intel drivers and reboot the computer until the PC uses the 14.8 drivers by microsoft."
I'm sorry but where can i disable Intel Proset, i can't find an uninstaller anywhere and where can i download 14.8 drivers from microsoft?
EDIT: Okay, i found out how to uninstall Intel Proset. I rebooted it and where do i check for 14.8 drivers -
can you install windows 7 on this laptop without issues?

How does the 14" HD+ (1600x900) screen compare to the Y510p 15.6" FHD 1080p screen as far as vertical viewing angles? I have a Y510p SLI model and I like the screen but I'm thinking of downsizing to the Y410p for better portability but I'm hoping the screens are similar in quality but I have a feeling they are not on the same level? I've seen a few Youtube videos but it's hard to tell.

Similar issue here. I have the Y410p. Portable and fast. But screen looks washed out although 900p resolution is ok. Also lots of heat while playing "Metro 2033" (it gve me a notification regarding the fact that the game may be incompatible bec in 32 bit version).
I love the portablility but screen looks a bit dull/washed out colors... And I am thinking the heat/airflow might get better in the 15inch version.
1-What do you guys think?Should I get the Y510p if my main concern is heat and screen quality(also, will travel to a hot country for next couple of years...so this is important..worried about the machine frying on me).
2-How to get colors and sound in headphnes to pop - I am using it as multimedia laptop when I am not gaming and even my old asus had a much better bass/sound quality.
3-If I disable the 750m GPU, along with 2 cores will I have a much longer battery? How to do it safely?
Thanks in advance. this is a great thread for a great product. -
FIXED
Has anyone upgraded hardware with difficulty and experienced the no issues or may have suggestions. I added memory today that is compatible as far as I know (see below). When I rebooted in Win 8, the system did not discover the change, instead recognizing the prev 8GB. Now, as I new to sucky WIN 8 and wish it was far easier to get around issues. I just requested an RMA with Corsair. I have not spoken to Lenovo yet.
Suggestions anyone?

Ok, so I apologize if any of the following questions have already been answered in this thread; I haven't looked at this thread in quite a while and I'm far too lazy to read through fifty pages of text to find the answers I'm looking for.
(1) I remember that there was a lot of controversy regarding the screen on the y410p because there was a lot of confusion as to whether or not it was matte or "anti-glare" and some people were complaining about overall graininess. So what's the deal with it? Can someone give a definitive review on the screen?
(2) Does it get hot to the point that it throttles whilst gaming? Because if that occurs with just one 750m, I can't even imagine how bad it will get with a second 750m when the GPU ultrabays come out in August...
(3) I know that the y510p is tainted with pretty bad battery life (at least when configured with SLI 750m's). Will battery life with an SLI y410p be about equivalent to that of the SLI y510p? Or will it be better or worse?
Sorry again if all these questions have already been answered
I need a new notebook by the end of the summer, and right know it's between the following for me:
Y410p (SLI)
Y510p (SLI)
Sager NP7330/Clevo W230ST
Gigabyte P35K/P34G (If we ever get any details about them)
Asus G46VR (Upcoming new model of G46, but might still only be ivy bridge, only 760m (instead of 765m) and also pretty expensive..? -
1 we have a glossy screen with a glare. It doesn't bother me that much but it bothers some people. horizontal viewing angles are fine but vertical angles are bad. Overall the screen has worked perfectly fine for me.
2 Mine hasn't gotten to hot unless the fan was somewhat obstructed
3 we would probably get the same battery life ..actually maybe a little better since the y510p is a y410p with a 15.6 or whatever inch display.

Just placed an order for the 900p Y410p (no SSD, saving up to get a 256 gigs one). I am okay with wait times on the laptop, but I can't wait for the laptop itself!
Can anyone tell me how thick this laptop is going to be? -
My question is weird and please don't judge and ask why.....I installed windows 7 ultimate on my new y410p and it works great. I want to buy another y410p and swap the HDDs. Will this work well? Will windows 8 oem installed on the other one freak out because it's been moved? I did not save any of the partitions or anything containing windows 8 in this computer, I just wiped it all out.
-
Remember this laptop (Y510p) is pumping out some serious power when operating in SLI mode so I expected heat, it's just a little more than I thought it would be. If I could find a good video on the Y410p HD+ screen, I'd be able to determine if I want to order one. I can't find any stores near me that have one on display. -
Its not an Ultrabook, but not super thick either. -
I have another question, if you don't mind. Do you have the 1366x768 or the 1600x900? How advantageous do you think is the latter from a gaming perspective, considering the capabilities of the GT750m? I ordered the 900 one, but now I'm wondering whether or not I should have gone for the 768. I currently have an old Dell Inspiron at 1366x768 and I'm pretty comfortable with that. -
But getting a 900p screen is entirely optional, and because this laptop has somewhat of a thick bezel, you get a lot of pixels in a small screen, so 768p is actually not all that bad.
Its a matter of choices. I picked 900 for future-proofing. -

i just got it working with my PS3
requirements. do it in the order mentioned
1) .net framework4
2) latest intel hd 4600 drivers. at the time of writing the executable is: Win64_15319.exe. intel driver version 9.18.10.3165
3) intel my wifi dashboard: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...ldID=22695&keyword=my+wifi+dashboard&lang=eng
thats the one i used but there is also an updated package / driver. you can try that too: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...ldID=22695&keyword=my+wifi+dashboard&lang=eng
4) Lenovo intel widi package: Intel Wireless Display Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Y410p, Y510p
once you've installed them (please do the reboots when asked after each package installation)
you'll notice a my wifi dashboard in the taskbar. you can open that up and you'll have the ability to toggle the radio on. turn it on and close dashboard
on the desktop you'll see an icon saying Intel (R) Widi. open that up. let it scan and it should list your widi router if you have one.
otherwise if you're trying with the ps3 go to your ps3 (make sure under network settings media servers is enabled). go to the video section and if the intel widi device hasn't already shown up try searching for media servers. it should come up
took me a while to be honest
i might be missing something since i did a lot of different things and all of a sudden it just started working
i had a good 5-7 second delay on my tv over widi but any video i played was in sync with the audio. compression artifacts were visible as well. i also have a very poor wifi router thats built into the cable modem so not ideal situation.
you can also only stream wireless music this way if you set the widi connected device as default audio so wireless audio going to your ps3 which then could be connected to your tv or home theatre system. -
If I have the Lenovo y410p with no SSD,
1. Can I install a second GT750m graphics card in the future and will they work in an SLI configuration?
2. Can I install an SSD in the optical drive slot? Or is there any other space where I can install one without touching the optical drive?
I'm sorry if these have been answered before, I tried going through the pages, but got confused with so many posts. Any info would be highly appreciated. -
2) Lenovo has not released their official ultrabay which replaces the optical drive with space for a 2.5" hdd, but you can get a sata hdd cady and it will work. check youtube
3) Yes you can install SSD in two ways without touching the optical drive
a) Replace the current 2.5" hdd with an SSD drive - i have done exactly this with a crucial m4 128gb
b) Install an m2. sata hdd in the slot next to the hard drive - note it is not a regular msata port. i tried to find an m2-sata drive but was unable to do.
can someone who bought the y410p with the ssd add on please post pictures and manufacturer information regarding the ssd. thank you. -
I like the thickness, it ensures there is room for airflow. It add to the sturdy feel. This machine does not feel cheap or flimsy, but solid. I just hope the components dont get fried. Forgive my ignorance, this is my first gaming laptop. -
Anyone seen the new HP Envy 15s (Either sleekbook or quad) 1080p screens ? I was looking for a comparison between the two because I heard the y410p is kinda washed out as well .

Got a Y410p a few days ago and am fairly pleased with it. I immediately swapped the HD out for a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on in. I got all the Windows 7 64-bit drivers off the Lenovo site and just went down the list installing them one by one. I did not install the Broadcom/Atheros Bluetooth & WLAN, or the Intel WiDi (don't have a capable display device so didn't bother). Device Manager shows that everything is recognized so I think I'm good there.
I have the 900p model and yeah, the screen isn't the greatest but it isn't horrible either. I've certainly used worse. I'd rate it as a little below average. For my use, I'm going to have it hooked up to an external monitor or TV most of the time so it wasn't a deal breaker for me.
All things considered it is a pretty good deal I think.
One thing I'll mention that could help some people out is that I was able to get the HDMI output to run at 2560x1440 @ 60Hz on my Dell U2711 monitor. By default it's limited to 1920x1080. Other users with the same issue had some success by adding a custom resolution into the graphics driver settings. However the new Intel control app looks completely different from older versions so banged my head a while to figure out how to do it. I eventually stumbled upon a program called CustomModeApp.exe which is installed by the Intel tools. Running that allowed me to add the resolution (@60Hz) using the CVT-RB timings. I also had to go into the monitor options and de-select the box that says hide mode that cannot be displayed. After that it finally let me switch to the new resolution (though it did complain that it was not supported). Note that I do notice a slight flicker when there is 'fast movement' on the screen. Not sure if that's due to the fact that it's HDMI or the CVT-RB timings. -
Anyone know how to stop the touchpad from being re-enabled on signing in from the Windows lock screen?

I have been reading through this thread while I was looking at purchasing this laptop and it finally shipped.
First impression like many other posters before me is that it is a really sleek laptop, powerful for the price. However after unboxing the computer and getting it all set up I found a dead pixed on the top right hand corner. I am in the process of sending it back to Lenovo but I don't know what that process looks like. If I have to wait another 2-4 weeks for a new laptop I might just take a look and see what the back to school sales bring.
I will keep you informed on how their customer support handles this issue in case others have the same issue. -
I don't really understand the SLI thing completely, so. -
Yes essentially you just "plug" in the second video card into the Ultra-bay after removing the DVD drive. Power on the laptop and the Nvidia control panel will recognize the second card and the screen will flash a few times while it configures itself. That's what my Y510p did when I added the second video card after having taken it out for a while.

I'm thinking of picking up one of these for my son in college. Couple of questions that I did not see going back a few pages.
1) How reliable are the Chinese drive caddies? I want to drop a 128 gb ssd internal and move the 1tb drive to the caddy. Should I wait until Lenovo releases an "official" caddy? (probably the same on that sells on ebay now)
2) Is the wifi card BIOS locked to the crappy centrino model? I would be interested swapping in a newer AC card. Probably not a deal breaker though.
Figure I will get the non-msata model with the 1600x900 screen.
Thanks -

1. it works, but the plastic siding might not fit.
2. Bios is locked down. -
If I take y410p with 24GB SSD, the ultrabay mentioned in features will it be occupied or I still will have spare one where I might plug bigger SSD drive or different HDD? Will it be a big problem to exchange HDD with 7200 rpm version or SSD with higher storage capacity?
Same question goes for optical drive. Is it possible to get rid of it and on it's place instal other drive ? I am total newbie when it comes to this hardware/inside stuff. -

So I've had my laptop for almost a month now, and the track pad is having an issue. The amount i have to press to get the left click to the register went up for some reason, and sometimes when I press it in and get the clicking sound the click doesn't even register on the computer. I was wondering if any of you have any ideas, is it possible that I could open the laptop and adjust the track pad housing or something to make it so I don't have to press nearly as had as I have to now. The track pad wasn't like this when I bought it so this a is pretty new problem. The right click has no issues whatsoever so It is exclusive to the left side of the track pad.

Ordered mine on the 25th. It shipped today the 27th via UPS and should be here on the 30th. Wow, lenovo is pretty quick. Must have gotten lucky

Is it worth the extra 50 bucks for the version with the 24GB SSD??

And having 8 second boot times and instant startup for apps like your browser really helps, unless you plan on getting 2.5inch SSD for your main drive. -
-
2. Go fiddle with the settings a bit, see if something is misconfigured
3. Your laptop is probably still under warranty. Try sending it in for a replacement? Your excuse could be that you have a faulty trackpad.
4. If all fails, then open up the laptop and look for defects. -

Is it just me, or does the y410p have issues shutting down properly when battery power? My laptop just blanks the screen, but never turns completely off. Only way to shut it down completely is to hold down the power button, but this clears the ssd cache.

It's Windows 8's shady way of shutting down systems. It happens on all PC/Laptops with 8 installed.
It makes the shut down progress really quick to those who don't pay much attentions. It shuts down screens first and does its shut down processes afterwards.
Basically, it's what Windows 8 is all about. It acts as if it's faster but in reality it's hardly faster. -
I like the idea of having a full power processor that the Y410P has, as opposed to the ULV ones in ultrabooks. Of course there is a hit on battery life, but has anyone played with the advanced power settings to aggressively throttle down the max processor state? What were the results on battery life at different settings?
I'm hoping you can throttle way down and gain significant battery life, while still having acceptable CPU speed for browsing and Office work. It won't be as efficient as a ULV processor, but the flexibility of having a quasi-low to full power CPU is more attractive to me than being stuck with a ULV one. But I question if significant power savings can really be achieved this way because then ULV processors would more or less be pointless. -
I got a little over 4 hours on mine doing some surfing on Wifi, power saver mode, only intel graphics and half brightness.
However, the reason i chose this laptop over the multitude of ULV's on today's market is that i intend to run some Emulators (Wii and PS2) that require more CPU power.
