For browsing and office work, ULV CPU is more than fine. Even Intel ATOM chips are good enough for that
-
Agreed. And if you are only gonna do light tasks, dont get a quad-core, those will much off your battery even further. -
I am planning on ordering the y410p later in the day but wanted to know a few things first.
1. Is it possible to install the OS on the 24GB SSD and boot from it and if so how?
2. Will an SSD work in the ultrabay or does it need to go where the HDD is now? -
I am planning on ordering one of these later in the day, but had a couple questions first.
1. Can an OS be installed and booted from the 24gb SSD? And if so how?
2. Can an SSD be used in the ultrabay or does it need to go where the HDD is currently and then the HDD gets moved? -
Thanks, good to know. Not sure if adjusting the max processor state manipulates the clock speed, but you might to play with that setting to possibly extend the battery further.
True, of course, if that's the only thing someone does. Maybe I should have been more clear that there will also be times when I'll be doing some CPU intensive stuff, such as working with massive spreadsheets, compiling and encoding, to name a few. Just wanted to be sure I could maximise computer time while girl watching at the cafe.
-
1. Format the SSD and install it. However, Windows 7-8 takes up 18gb of space by default, so it's not recommended unless you intend to put an light OS such as linux on it.
2. Yes. If you get a caddy, you can put in any 2.5inch Sata2-Sata3 drive you want. You can even do Software raid 0 with a caddied drive. -
Do you have any links to where I can buy the caddy since one has not been released by Lenevo yet and also compatible/recommended SSDs
-
Just search ebay.

Ok....so I'm slightly annoyed. I was about to rebook an order for the y410p as my last 2 have had defects, but the guy just told me they are releasing a refresh in late August that will have an Nvidia GT755m with the dual graphics option available for the 14 inch model....

Inb4 Lenovo Y420P
Also, R.I.P anyone looking for the ultrabay 750m
-
Just for FYI, some info about 755m, NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M | techPowerUp GPU Database
Wait if you really want to wait. I see maybe 5% (MAX) increase of performance from 750m. It's not much of a difference. -
As said before, ebay is your friend:

Also, heres a tutorial for Software Raid 0 on windows 8 in case that's what you are planning to do:

Who knows....I'm pretty upset that they do this all of the time. I am going to re-order anyways, and if the new system is a lot better I will return it and get that one since they are still running the 30 day free returns for orders placed in July.
-
I think the biggest difference though is that model with the 755m will be offered with SLI. I have yet to ever see a purchasable SLI card for the 750m model. So in this case, the ability to have SLI on the Y4?? series model is a pretty big difference. They have never released any cards to do SLI with. I believe the biggest reason they don't ever seem to release the SLI for the 14 inch Y series is because of heat. Interestingly enough, the GT750m is rated at TDP of 38 watts. The TDP for the GT755m is 16 watts. Hence, I think this is the reasoning they are going to be able to offer the SLI finally because of the lower power consumption.
GeForce GT 755M vs 750M -
The irony is that i found out that im never using the 750m on mine lol. 4600 HD ftw
Plays all my low end games like a champ.
If it's only 5% power boost i wont mind. Also, even if the 755m has low power consumption, it wont really change anything since theres no point using a Nvidia GPU when you're on the battery.
Also, how do they cut power in half on a higher end card 0_o. -
Technology at it's finest. In 2010-2011 bought me an i3-550 with a LGA 1156 mobo, only for Sandy Bridge to come out 1-2 months later ahaha.
-
That half TDP can't be correct.
-
Ironically, if you go on this page and click on the 755M, it gives you a dead link
GeForce Graphics Processors (GPUs) | NVIDIA GeForce | NVIDIA
My bet says it has a TDP of 36W, not 16W, because essentially a 755 should simply be an overclocked 750. -
If it really is 16 TDP, we would have known about it already because it warrants for something called "Breakthrough in technology". It would give Nvidia a HUGE advantage over ATI in mobile GPU.
I doubt it's really half TDP also. More like 40 or 35 at best. -
If it were a "breakthrough in technology" it would be a 855M. This is spoken from experience.
My point stands, i bet its a 36W or something similar, typos are so easily done.
I remember when the Lenovo site listed that the Y510P had a failed SLI config: One 750M and one 720M in the ultrabay. Nevertheless, all the laptops ordered with that config came with dual 750s.
Any web designer/writer knows how easy it is to miss one number in a spreadsheet, and then fail to see your own mistake upon reviewing it.
But if they pull a 16W tdp ill be damned. -
Ordered this a week or so ago, and it was originally intended to be delivered today. Unfortunately Lenovo cancelled the order Friday so I had to reorder. Hopefully it won't take too long to be delivered - was a little frustrated that they didn't contact me first prior to cancelling it.
Either way, quite looking forward to the actual product, ignoring Lenovo's service. Can't do anything anymore with the laptop I have, so this will be a huge improvement. -
I really hope they do release SLI. I bought this laptop with that option in mind. Im going to be sadly disappointed if it turns up that they don't go that route. Makes me wish I bought the NP7330.
-
I got the tdp numbers from gpu boss. Goggling x vs y will pull it up. Who knows? All I know now though is they are likely not going to make the optional card for the current y410p. If you want sli will have to get the new model. I ciuld be wrong but I guess we will see here shortly.
-
A question I had is that does the CPU allow for XTU tuning, the new HP envy 15 has most of the setting open for easy undervolting .
And how easy it is to switch wifi cards ? I know the y400/500 had problems because of strict whitelisting .
Also could someone post a picture of the power brick with a smartphone to compare ? -
Yeah no way the 755M does 16 watts, from looking at the specs it is literally a core overclocked 750M (probably some firmware improvements too); it has the same Shading/TMU/Rops and memory, just a slightly faster core speed (1019 MHz vs 941 MHz). So make your own 755M right now hehe, I already have my 750M overclocked +90 core +100 mem.
I doubt Lenovo will bump the laptop model number for such a small change, they will probably sell new Y410P with the 755m card (which also means if you send your 750M laptop in for warranty work you might end up with a 755M, yay). Also means you could get a 755M and replace the 750M if that is the case. Also also means SLI with a 750M and a 755M might just work, I know for a fact on desktops you can SLI slightly different models of cards together. We shall see. -
I sure hope so
-
Why would they cancel an order on you? Did you say anything to them?
-
-
I ordered mine last thursday and its being delivered today. And I sure hope they don't refresh it anytime soon. At least give us the ultrabay add on lenovo :/
-
If I may ask to anyone who has one and actually uses the 750m how hot does it get on the keyboard? Is it disruptive to your experience?
-
So I'll take that as a no on the XTU tuning and switchable wifi-cards, seems bad .
-
Not really.
-
Now jobine you did tell me you never even use the 750m due to the heat and battery you like to use the igpu so please let me know if you actually tested it with the 750m
-
I doubt what you are concerned is even an issue. If it were, warning posts would be all over the forum. Unless they really screwed up its internal design, it can't happen.
-
Rarely use it =/= doesnt use it at all.
In case i havent pointed it out, i still do play BF3+COD BO on this laptop, and im pretty sure i need the muscle of the 750M to play those games.
Gets around 85-95 @ full load. -
95 was my m11x and i couldnt touch it. Anyway i ordered today a cooler master ergostand 2.i think it will help for couch/bed gaming also. I wait for my lenovo y410p in a week or so.
-
85 - 95 c is about the norm with a single fan heat pipe configuration. I know some would panic to see such temp but really it's norm and laptop will function perfectly fine under such temp.
-
Does the keyboard gets hot?
-
Warm at most.
The only "hot" area is the space on the side of the keyboard, which you never (should) touch anyways. -
In comparison, the MSI laptops go up to 120.
And are noisier...
And uglier... -
Since you're a big fan of using your intel hd4600 instead of the 750m which you told me (and I'm a little confused why you bought this laptop if that was your primary goal, seems like a waste) you might know that black ops can run pretty much at max on intel hd4600
-
Actually, heres what i currently use both GPU's for:
4600HD:
- When im on battery
- Low end games (ex: Minecraft, LoL, Garrys Mod)
- Productivity
- Adobe Fireworks
- Browsing
- Watching movies
750m:
- High end games (Mostly BF3, planning to get BF4, Need for Speed)
- Wii Console Emulation (via Dolphin)
- Video production/Rendering, Blender/Premiere/AfterFX
- Possible Engineering software, since im going in Engineering next year
- Future-Proofing
As dumb as this sounds, even though i have a desktop, this laptop will be my main machine, and ill be using for all kinds of tasks, from work, to school, to gaming to media and i hope it will last me a good 2-4 years. I was originally gonna buy an Inspiron 14z (899$, i7-3317U, 8gb ram, 768p display, Radeon 7570M) but this laptop had better specs for the same price.
Also, the list of hardware i have in my signature are not all devices i own, but devices in my household. I currently own the 1st and 5th items. -
Just if anyone is curious, a link to the upcoming refresh of the y410p.

Comparison of GT750m vs GT755m
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GT-755M-vs-GeForce-GT-750M
Check specs, it is GT755m. Looks like it is already shipping there? I doubt it is a typo as I searched through many Chinese message boards, it seems this is the card that is coming to replace the 750m. Also, it will be offered with dual graphics and have a matte display. -
Looks like ill be calling Nvidia tomorrow asking if i can SLI 750 with 755.
Also, it says it has matte display, but the Y410P said also it had a matte display and oh look, glossy.
+ I looked on lenovo China and the model with the 755m has 4gigs of ram 0_o. -

Update:
Wifi goes on and off.... Impossible to watch youtube tonight... Plus laptop under load (Heat+Fans at full speed) as soon as the screen saver is engaged...
Have a feeling I am going to return this baby.... Too bad: Wifi, screen, heat...I started loving this machine but this is not going anywhere...
Any suggestion for a 15inch gaming laptop with nice screen?,
(even if cpu/gpu performance is slightly lower....). -
I just switched to the Asus N550JV-DB72T and couldn't be happier. Full HD 1080p IPS touchscreen, even better than the y510p full HD screen. It is glossy though and does show glare. I has a DDR3 GT 750M with 2GB of RAM, and a Haswell 4700 or 4702 CPU depending on where you buy it. It will play any game I have tried so far at high details. Diablo III runs around 60-70FPS and BF3 runs smooth as butter at 1080p and medium settings. The best part is that the vents face the rear of the laptop and there is absolutely zero heat on either side which makes gaming very comfortable. No SLI options but I don't care. The battery lasts me over 4 hours on integrated graphics (HD 4600) and the build quality puts the Y series to shame. It's all metal with zero palm rest flex. I got mine from Microcenter.
-
Aren't they legally obliged to deliver on the SLI promise , or at least to allow you to return the laptop?
-
WoW!!!! This is what I wanted in first place!!!! As soon as I saw it on Amazon I knew this was it!
Thank you!!!!! Returning my Y410 tomorrow.
(Let me know if you find versions with more powerful cards, but I think this is all I need). At least Asus knows what they are doing (Lenovo needs to work more on the y410p and y510p... May be next iteration)
Zillion Thanks!!! -
Which processor do you recommend?
