Hey I just got the y41op and I am both impressed and a bit bummed.
First off, i must say the bios is pretty dissapointing. Got mine on sale with a really good discount ( 600$) and got the i7 one, I was mostly interested in the i5 one but what the heck.
I was looking foward using this to take my notes in university on top of having the flexibility of some gaming. I wanted to downclock the cpu, yet, the bios is locked tight.
Anyone knows if there is an unlocked bios out there with more options ???
Anyone knows the availability of ultrabay accessories such as the ultrabay 750m for sli and ultrabay 3 cell battery ? I can't get the sales reps to give ma a clear answer.
The only thing i was able to get was that the 750m ultrabay would be about 229$
PS: Anyone having trouble with the wifi ?? simple, un install the wifi card in the hardware menu, then reboot and just use the windows 8 drivers for your centrino card, no more random disconnects or ping hikes !![]()
-
How important is the OneKey Recovery partition? What features do I lose if I delete it? What other recovery options would remain?
Thanks. -
Whoa Whoa Whoa
Where did you find the 750M ultrabay for the Y410P? Im really interested. -
I didnt find it, I asked for it and they said they couldnt say when but it would be about 229$, thats when i asked a sales rep to ask his boss.
Also it's obvious well get a 750m. the y500 has a 650m ultrabay, my friend has it. And the 650m is THE SAME GPU but renamed, faster clock speed. It's a rebadge. Technically you could even get a 650m and bios flash it to 750m.
Still can't get it yet, and can't fix that friggin bios. -
Funny how they are planning to release a 755m model in september. Ironically, the 755M is an overclocked 750M...
-
in that case the problem is they might plan to skip the 750m
which i wouldnt like. I bought this laptop expecting the release of a second gpu to sli with.

So I looked into Tomshardware.com thoughts on the best SSD for your money, and they seem to really stick by SAMSUNG. So what I'm looking into ordering/preordering today is either:
Original 840 Series 500GB SSD for $330
SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com
new 840 EVO 500GB SSD for $370
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Not sure if the new EVO ssd is worth the extra $40 even though Tomshardware reviewed it very highly, and I'm not sure what else I'm going to need to move my operating system to this ssd. If possible, I'd like to clone it over before I even turn on my new Y410p when it arrives.
Whatcha think guys? -
Samsung 840 EVO vs 840
9.0 for the EVO and 7.0 for the Non-EVO -
Sick I just preordered it. And as usual, thanks jobine! haha
What other kind of software/hardware am I going to need to transfer my OS over before I switch the drives in my Y410p?
EDIT: I'm going to be using the 1TB 5400rpm hard drive in an optical bay caddy. Any possible compatibility problems I might run into? (this is my first time replacing laptop hard drives) -
Well, you are going to need a disk cloning tool (Clonezilla works) and you will also need a caddy.

Link to Laptop Disassembly video:

Also don't forget to take the front part of the DVD drive and attach it to the caddy, otherwise the side of the laptop will look very ugly. -
Solved the stupid whine problem. It doesn't happen if the keyboard backlight is turned off. Don't ask me why, lol. Some sort of magnetic interference, I believe.
And no, my wifi is mostly fine. People who had problems with their wifi seemed to think turning off bluetooth helped, -
I got this almost 2 weeks ago and so far it has been great. The only thing I am struggling with is how to set this laptop up in RAID so I can use the SSD for caching because it is not shipped with it enabled. On my old laptop I was able to just to go BIOS and change the HDD to the RAID setting, but on this there is no option given.
How can I set this in RAID so I can use the Intel Rapid Storage for SSD caching? -
long time viewer, first time contestant.
hey guys.
so i just got off the web chat with the overseas sales rep for lenovo and i was asking him all sorts of questions on being able to swith the y410 over to SSD and he said it could not be done. neither through the laptop or through the ultrabay of the y510. he said the system was not designed for it. I'm not very tech savvy but thought I'd check in with you guys.
what say thee? -
RAID =/= caching. If you ordered the model with the ssd, it's set to cache by default. But feel free to open up the rst control panel to verify.
-
hey guys, i just ordered the y410p (899 model) from the canadian lenovo website because ill be studying there, however it says that it ships more than 4 weeks, and my term begins in 2-3 weeks, so just wondering whether there is a slight chance that ill get it earlier than stated?
i have been checking threads in this forum for the past week, and really trying to decide on the best choice for my college laptop. was what i did a good choice? ordering from the lenovo site because it had a coupon that was $450 off the original price. also, id like to know if there are better alternatives for the 410p so that i could cancel the order if need be. -
Only thing ive seen in the price range of the Y410P that has similar performance is the HP Envy Quad Edition, but it's still weaker than the Y410P and also a bit bigger. Even though it is advertised with 8 hours of battery life, this is an obvious lie by HP and it's battery life is the same as the Y410p, as stated by many, many, many reviews.
I got mine in 18 days, but if you call Lenovo, i think you can charge a little extra for overnight shipping. -
It is not enabled, as I am pretty sure it doesn't ship with it on. When I open up the RST control panel it says that the cache capability can be used for all RAID drives, however I am unable to set them up in RAID
-
For the love of [insert deity here], Lenovo laptops *DON'T* use Intel SRT/RST for caching! They use Expresscache! Type eccmd.exe -info in the command prompt to view the status.
-
Any guide how to set it up? I am getting an error ECCmd requested device is not available : 2
-
So i'm assuming you did a clean install?
Erase the SSD but dont format it (leave it as free space), then install expresscache:

Thanks, I was able to get it to work without a problem. Do you know the command to preload a program on it for faster boot time (in my case Matlab). I know it is ECCmd.exe -preload...... but I am getting a syntax error when I try to type the file path after the "preload"
-
Nope. The more you use a program, the better chance that Expresscache will load it to SSD.
Also, to preload you probably forgot to run the cmd prompt as an admin. -
I am running it as admin, but getting a syntax error on reload. I am doing ECCmd.exe -preload "<"C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2013a\">" without the quotes
Is that format right? -
Can you run eccmd.exe -info and post your output? Just wanna see if the thing is properly installed.
-
Hey, I got my laptop a couple days ago and I absolutely love it. No problems whatsoever - touch pad seems fine, no wireless problems, everythings good. Just one thing, how do I clean the finger prints off the palmwrest on this thing?
-
oops double post
-
It is installed right
-
Hmmm. Try reading the expresscache documentation then
-
Complete crap. I replaced the stock drive with a Samsung 840 Pro SSD and did a fresh install of Windows 7 on it. Works great. I got an external caddy for the stock drive and now use that for backups. May get one of those Ultrabay caddies at some point.
Note that there is not an access panel for the HD like some laptops have so the install isn't as trivial as other models. You basically have to pop off the whole back of the laptop to get to it. -
In case anyone is looking to get a second adapter for their y410p I ordered this off Amazon and it works great. It's even Lenovo branded but cheaper than getting it through them.

Howww do i clean the finger prints of the palm wrest? I'm kind of OCD, so yeah LOL
-
I just use my finger to clean them... lol
-
Problem!!!
mine is the 20216 model (with blu ray + ssd). the blu ray can't read any disk. it makes crackle sound everytime it try to read a cd. is anyone has the same problem. how to fix it. -
Does anybody know how to obtain a Windows 8 ISO file? I have been searching all over the internet how to do a clean install of a Windows 8 OEM version and I can't find any help. Windows 8 Setup does not accept my product key because it is OEM.
-
Bay of Pirates...
(while i don't encourage piracy, this is not really piracy because you have your own license) -
Send the laptop to Lenovo for a replacement, it should be under warranty. Seems like a defect to me.
-
Always wash your hands with soap and water before using your laptop everyday and then wear some thin latex gloves when using it. That will guarantee clean with no smudgy/fingerprint look on your laptop for sure. -
Just checked. For some reason it's easier to find Windows 8 ISO in other languages, and practically all the english versions are Windows 8 Pro
Does anybody own the Windows 8 ISO file that they could send me? Unless you know another way to do a clean install. =\ -
Found EXACTLY what you're looking for, hope this helps:
https://thepiratebay.sx/torrent/8522760/Windows_8_NON-PRO_OEM_64_Bit_For_System_Builders_-_Judas
Note that this torrent comes with *no* activator/serial whatsoever, so technically this isn't warez and this is not illegal. -
whaaa? Not sure why that was so hard for me to find hah. Thanks a bunch jobine

On a completely separate note, for anybody that will be gaming and if you didn't know already. Origin Humble Bundle (8 games for less than $5): https://www.humblebundle.com/

This laptop has been working really well for me, but sometimes while I'm playing a game, it'll seem to go into sleep mode, disconnecting me from everything.
Anyone know why it would do this? It feels warmer than normal but it certainly doesn't feel like it's overheating. -
Sleep mode? If the laptop would overheat it would normally power off, odd.
Try looking up your power management settings.... -
Bump.

Arg, friggin Expresscache sucks. I used the Eccmd.exe -info command to see that my cache didn't appear to be working. It showed mere MEGAbytes of data used, and 0% read/write utilization, and some other zeros. So I nuked it.
Uninstalled, rebooted, deleted directory, went into disk mgmt and deleted the partition on the SSD. Rebooted again just in case. I'm attempting to install the x64 version that I DL'ed from Lenovo, and I get " The file C:\Program Files\Condusiv Technologies\ExpressCache\SupportDll\ecbase.dll can not be found. Make sure the file is on the target system, or is already installed." It's there, explorer shows the file as being there! I can see it! And If I attempt to uninstall I get the same error. Ideas?
I suspecting this all stems from me trying the 8.1 preview, hating it, and rolling back to an image I made. Expresscache was totally MIA after I installed the 8.1 preview.
Edit: Found THIS. I got that installed, but it's version 1.0.84 vs 1.0.100. No matter what I do, the 1.0.100 will NOT install! -
I love this laptop so far! Does anyone know the best way to set up dual monitors? Do I need to change the graphics card? I tried a VGA monitor Y cable but that was a fail - it darkened the screen of my main monitor and the second one failed to recognize the input. The monitors have vga and dvi ports. Any advice would be appreciated
-
OneKey shouldn't be too necessary because you could still use the default windows recovery.
-
Has anyone tried (or succeeded) to hackintosh this laptop?
I assume iATKOS ML3U with Clover EFI b/l would work.. -
Hackintosh and Haswell is a No-No (source: Tonymacx86). Wait for Mavericks.
-
Theres a Fn key combination you can press to change output display settings, Fn+F3, also the Laptop has HDMI, not DVI, only laptop i saw with a DVI port is the Clevo P750WM
