To extend battery life, open Nvidia Control Panel, 3D options, and then pick "auto-select" (Optimus) or "Integrated Graphics" (Intel only). Then you can limit the activation of the Nvidia GPU, reducing heat and improving battery life.

hey jobine ... can you tell me the maximum temperture that Y410P battery can handle ?

my y410p runs between 50-70 celcius in my environment and i dont know that temperature normal or not for a battery :)

The CPU has a TJmax (recommended maximum operating temperature) of around 105°C, however it will auto shutoff at around 120°C.

Mine runs at about 40C under normal use.

He wrote battery, you assumed CPU, although I think he meant CPU.

Tjunction--throttling temperature--for the i7-4700MQ is 100C which is 5C lower than for the i7-3630QM. Tjunction Max--thermal shutdown temperature--is somewhere between 120-130C. But these are all Intel's specifications and laptop manufacturers oftentimes override these in the BIOS with their own thermal behavior. For the Y500, this meant Lenovo forced a premature shutdown at Tjunction instead of letting it throttle. There is no way to alter this behavior. I've personally pushed my system to 105C and watched it shut down during stress testing. For the Y510p, my money is on Lenovo once again forcing a premature thermal shutdown at 100C.

Fortunately, the main heatsinks and all major sources of heat on this laptop are away from the battery, so even during intense gaming, the battery never gets very hot. Just keep the battery away from direct sunlight. For the battery, heat will definitely reduce it's overall lifespan.

Even with the laptop plugged in 24/7, keep the battery as an UPS, you never know when power outages strike.

Also if you ever need to increase the mobility of this laptop, you can always purchase a larger 72w/h battery on Lenovo's website, it will bring your battery life from 4 hours to 6 hours (hours based on light web browsing).

i think i need a larger battery capacity cuz every saturdy i need this laptop for school ... i think 3-4 more than enough but 4-6 hourd is awesome for gaming in the break time :D

I have now been using the y410p for a few days. It is a great laptop (but not perfect!) but the battery life while gaming sucks. Playing Civ5 is a bit over an hour. Also, the performance on battery is much worse.

I am not even sure what GPU is being used on battery, is there a way to find that out? The performance is so much worse vs plug in, than I am assuming the laptop switches to the 4600.

Well, by going to the Nvidia Control Panel, you can select which GPU you want to use.

First and foremost, when on battery, Nvidia GPU's tend to put themselves into a low-power state, because most of the time the battery cannot feed them enough. Thus, when on battery, it is recommended to use the 4600HD for maximum gaming performance (and battery life).

As for the performance on battery life, like i mentioned, is probably due to Haswell and your power management settings. The i7-4700MQ, when on battery/power saver mode, will downlock itself to (yikes) 800mhz when on battery, and will go up to 2.4ghz when needed. This creates a large contrast between when it is plugged in/high performance mode, where it will usually sit at 3.3ghz.

Lastly, the battery is rated at 48w/h (in a perfect world) while the processor alone can consume up to 47w/h on full load. Factor in a screen, motherboard, HDD, and an extra GPU and you get the message.

You can always play with your Advanced Power Management settings and Intel XTU to get more oomph out of your CPU. As for the GPU, stay on the 4600HD when on battery.

Hi Jobine ... my Y410P Average temperature when playing battlefield 3 is around 70-80 Degrees celcius ...

and i'm playing with this setup :

Using Battery and keep charging it because i'm using "Optimized Battery Health" on Lenovo Energy management

you know .... the fan blow very fast and in 70-80 celcius .... is the battery okay with that ?

oo ya ... 1 question : is that okay if i'm use the laptop 24/7 with that setup ? (Not always for gaming ... but also for homework , browsing, etc etc.

    please reply asap :D

I get similar temps. Nothing wrong here, and it won't damage the battery, like i said, if you touch the battery while gaming, you will notice the battery does not get hot. Just keep your CPU temps under 90°C otherwise you might start to throttle. Undervolting and repasting helps.

Also, it is okay to use the laptop plugged in 24/7 like that. Dragnoak reported only 8% capacity loss after letting his battery sit in at 60% charge plugged in 24/7 for TWO YEARS.

    Fast reply is fast.

As some of you probably noticed I've tinkered quite alot with the Y410P; mainly because I'm an hardware engineer myself and I was curious to see how well built these machines are.

My Y410P's gave up after I've made it work too hard for the past week (Prime95 + FurMark @ 24/7).
It's good news tho since I was expecting it to fail at some point, just didn't know it would take so much time.
Unlike the rivals in it's category, it made it past the 72 hrs test which what should really matter for 99.9% of the users.
Now I can be confident that it's gonna be my machine for the next 2 years :p

The other machines I've tested were: Dell XPS 13, Alienware 14, Razer Blade.

The main design problem I've found with the Y410P is the lack of proper fan control which reflects greatly on performance (the laptop starts throttling). After I receive my replacement I suggest we open a group thread on Lenovo's forums asking for more control for the Fan speeds directly from BIOS. Judging from their technical support, they know what they are doing pretty well and most likely will answer our request with a BIOS update.

I just received my y410p, and am planning on performing a clean install on an internal SSD and use the HDD in the ultrabay. My question is: aside from the drivers off of Lenovo's site and Nvidia's site, are there any useful software I should install? Any sort of tweaks or genuinely useful tools? I'm not asking so much about programs - rather things like Intel's caching software, which obviously doesn't apply here.

My GT750M5 from Taobao has left China and is going to NYC, so I should get it in a week or so, maybe less? Depends on how fast JFK customs gets it and releases it.

GT750M5 is for y510p and GT750M4 is for y410p. The price from the Taobao seller was $262 for the card and the power brick, plus I had to pay 10% total Taobao agent + PayPal fees and $40 EMS shipping to me. The cards are compatible except for the retention clip and bezel, which I plan to mod and swap from my DVD drive.

No, the M5 fits the Y510p. GT750M4 fits the Y410p. However, it's believed a dremel can fix that.

    Hi guys,
I've had my y410p for a couple of months now, and I'm loving it. However, I was wondering if, for those of you Battlefield players, if you ever get random crashes in BF3 or the BF4 beta where the game would freeze and upon alt-tabbing, the screen colors would be inverted, at which point the game has to be manually closed through task manager. I've been getting this crash for a while, and I was hoping that it would be fixed in BF4, however I am getting the exact same crash. Does anyone have any ideas as to a fix? Also, if it is relevant, my cpu and gpu temps can get quite hot after a bit of gameplay, reaching the mid 90's at their peak.

Anyone here who uses external soundcard (USB DAC) and suffers an occasional audio stuttering? I'm using AudioTrak Maya U5 and experienced random stuttering (like "click" or "pop") while playing any kind of audio sources..... I saw a similar problem in Y460/Y4560, but it was solved with BOS update..... Soooo..... anyone?

The popping is mostly caused by dolby home theatre. Either turn home theather off or go to Lenovo onekey theatre, and set it to "normal" instead of "music".

and it never crashing while i'm alt-tabbing it, and also the color never inverted.

I think you need to update your GPU Driver. and what program that you use for monitoring your laptop Temp ?
