hey, I have been using this machine for a few weeks, a few observations for new users:

    - the always on USB. In my case the laptop came with this feature disabled in BIOS. I found it very strange.
    - touchpad. I use the mouse and it is frustrating that after every sleep/hibernate/reboot I have to disable the touchpad. It keeps reenabling itself.
    - screen. I really dont like that HUGE bezel. The screen could be one inch larger with this frame.

Disabling a battery-draining feature out of the box is a good thing.

Disable it in the Control Panel instead.

But then you would have some awkward panel that would require custom manufacturing and would drive up the price. Too small for 15.6, too big for 14.1.

Btw, does anyone's CPU throttle even when Turbo Boost is off. ?

Mine reaching 98c during BF3......and screen begin to flicker =(

The only way to play it is to downclock it straight to 2.0Ghz....that is also around 95c...

This CPU suppose to be this hot ?

I wanna see what he thinks of it before i pull the plug.

Except he tried to use a GT750M5, while this is a GT750M4. If this doesn't work for the Y400/Y410p what reason does it have for existing? To bring Lenovo lawsuits?

I just don't wanna take risks. As you might have noticed, i am importing this from China, so getting a refund will be likely impossible. My best bet of getting rid of this if it fails to work on my laptop is putting it up on eBay as a "Y400/Y410p compatible GT750M" for around ~250-300$.

And i'm already stretching 50$+ over budget to even get this in the first place. Need to know if it's worth it.

The main advantage of getting a GT750M is that i get native SLI support without some modded driver, which means i can comfortably use the card in Linux (which i might consider doing later on).

Agreed, you could just flip it in the off-chance it doesn't work. The most important thing is calling the seller and demanding photographs of the Ultrabay to ensure you're actually getting a GT750M4 and not something else like what happened to EmberV.

I would do that, but i do not speak Mandarin, and i doubt the seller speaks English.

Speaking of Linux support, the main thing that would push me to move to Linux is the fact that switchable graphics work on Linux, which means that after proper configuration, i can set my laptop to either use the 750M SLI or the 4600HD after a restart, which is very useful for college, saves me the work of bringing two bays.

When connected to VGA it was blank as well. I've all ready sent it back to Lenovo, and I'm guessing they will just replace the motherboard or just give me a refurbished one. They just got it yesterday at their repair depot and probably have not even looked at it.

So it's probably just better to not even use the modded BIOS since it unintentionally activates this other BS, unless we bring it to svl7's attention to see if he can re-disable it.

I'm getting convinced the whole not detected thing is a vbios issue. It would be cool if someone with a y510p could send over their unmodified ultrabay vbios dump from nvflash so I could see if it's the same as the (presumably) y500 GT750M ultrabay that I have. It would be nice to see the unmodied GN35 and GN36 ultrabay vbios's as well.

There are two vbios's in the bios of the y410p, and one of them matches the length of the ultrabay vbios. I wonder what would happen if that was flashed? Certainly can't hurt anything too bad considering I have a hardware flasher.

There's nothing wrong with using the modded BIOS if you don't mess around with settings you're not familiar with. I've been using it since before you guys joined this board and haven't run into any issues besides one time when I accidentally disabled a USB port, but a quick BIOS reset cured that. There's a reason svl7 puts the disclaimer that some of the settings in the unlocked BIOS menus don't work or could possibly brick your system before every one of his mods. It's not within his power and responsibility to find out what works or doesn't work since he doesn't even own this laptop. I'm just extremely grateful he took the time and effort to make the mods in the first place.

I say go for it because you were going to drop money on a 650M and you don't actually know if that would have worked either, and a 750M will be easier to get rid of than a 650M.

Your asking the wrong question. You should be asking wither you need another card for your laptop (for whatever reasons).
Since it's an official model for our beloved laptop there is no reason for it not to work; if it doesn't work, call Lenovo's tech support and ask them . While they don't sell the accessory on their website, they still provide support.
The worst that can happen is you'll get a fake card and send it back/get a refund.

Nobody was asking him to do that. It's a side effect of unlocking the developer options. Which BTW with proper hardware & codes enables recovery from a bad situation like that.
The problem is, we didn't research Intel's Management Platform to know how to do that. If somebody is willing to put time into it I can provide documentation and tools.

I disagree. He should at least buy from a retailer he can return the card to for a refund if he refund into problems, vs. buying from some unknown person in CHINA, and then hoping that he can offload the card AND extra power brick he wont need on ebay for considerably less money after fees and lower selling price, after finding out the card isn't the right one or doesn't work for some reason. That just doesn't seem like a logical buying choice at all (frankly, I think it's a stupid one), but to each their own...

It's a gamble for sure, but much safer IMO than buying a 650M and trying to make it work, since the GT750M4 is the card intended for his laptop in the first place.

I want you to purchase it(for my own selfish reasons). With that being said, I would not purchase it myself. $300 is a lot of money to gamble on IMO. If its already out in china, it will make its way to the US.

I hear you on that. My desktop(specs in sig) is a lot faster for games(triple the 3dmark11, double the sli750m). With that considered, I have not played a game on it in almost a month. I want to sell my desktop and use this laptop as a desktop replacement. SLI on this laptop would be a big selling point on doing that. With the proceeds, I would purchase the 750m ultrabay and most of the price of a ps4 :)

Except his ancient i3 would bottleneck the crap out of that, and any high-end GPU from the last few generations for that matter.

Why would you do that? R9 280X is simply a rebadged 7970 GHz Edition. Same performance but way cheaper than a GTX 770.

My Desktop has a 3-year old Nehalem i3 (4.1GHz), an aging Fermi GTX 560, twin 1TB 7200RPM's in Raid 0 and a 19'' 1600x900 display. Runs Windows Server 2012 R2 atm (basically server 8.1 i got from Dreamspark). Built this thing in 2010 though i added the GPU in 2011.

With the whole LAN party thing, my desktop is being less and less attractive. Though there is no point in me selling it, it has like no value these days :p

    @Octiceps

Either i'd have to buy a somewhat weak i7-875K or get a new mobo+CPU+Cooler, which is easily 400$+. And the fact that my 4700MQ matches a 4670...

Nah that's fine. Intel's had basically no competition at the high-end since 2007 so they've been super-complacent the last few generations. Pretty laughable how there's been almost no improvement since Sandy Bridge. That's coming up on what, 3 years now? LOL.

Anyway the i7-875K is not a bad chip. Get some good cooling and OC that thing to 4 GHz. Should go pretty well with a recent high-end single GPU.

Yeah. My Nehalem i3 OC'd can match the Ivy Bridge i3 in terms of performance.

I can see the FX 8350 as the i5 killer, but it still runs stupidly hot and has terrible single-core performance, not to mention intel could easily release a bargain bin 8 core tomorrow and smoke AMD in the cold.

But a desktop is not portable :(

Ok, gonna sent to my local service centre for checking next week...

All the high temp with CPU and GPU occurs during 1080p.....however even with 738p, it stills hovers at 90c.

This machine should be able to game on a 1080p res since it's just like a 14inch y510p right ?

$300 is a ripoff for an Ultrabay considering that for $400 you could get an i7-875K and a Radeon 7950 or GTX 760, which will prolong the life of your aging desktop for at least several more years until Skylake and DDR4 come out. Do your high-end gaming on the desktop and leave the laptop for school and lighter gaming. Makes a lot more sense to me. SLI isn't even all that necessary at 900p.

I can already predict Broadwell being more floptastic 5% performance. Hence why i will be most likely upgrading at skylake (2015).

Forget SLI. I think i'll just get a SSD to caddy instead, and maybe see where Ember got some of his cool brackets.

No idea what you're talking about, but if you're referring to Ruby she's been the ATI/AMD mascot since 2003.

And sexist GPU box art has existed since forever because most gaming products are clearly marketed toward males.

I already have a y410p I was just looking around and I found that. But I am very content with my y410p because I need to carry it around and the extra weight plus all my book = not a good time.

Paid 800$ for 900p+SSD model, came to about 900$ with tax. Though it was quite some time ago.
