Can you make a video of how you got the caddy as well?
-
Hello, I received this laptop today, and it seems great so far. I went into my bios and saw that it was revision 3.07, which is not compatible with the custom/hacked bios. Is there any other way that I can customize my cpu's clock speed, or even just remove the wireless card whitelist?
-
You won't be able to remove the whitelist, however you can adjust cpu clock speed and voltage (but not the number of Cores and TDP) under Intel Extreme Tuning Utility.
If you need to upgrade WiFi cards, try upgrading to this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-N-802-11bgn-Bluetooth-802-11a-Adapter/dp/B00ELCBTLM
This one will work even if there is a whitelist, however it does not have AC wireless. -
Thanks for your reply. I was hoping to attempt to install OS X on this but since broadcom cards aren't allowed I guess I'll have to stick to a VM.
-
I'll check the HMM, i know there is a broadcom card that works with the Y410p's whitelist that is OS X compatible.

Thank you. I just saw that the coupon was called "Hohoho," so I thought it was a holiday sale. When Christmas ends will they just change the name of it to something else?
-
Like how I made the faceplate fit or whaa?
-
Yes.

Pretty much. 6 months ago i remember seeing the "4THOFJULY" Coupon on the Y410p
They had a special deal, you got the bluray/SSD/900p/750M/i7 model for only 849$. Lasted 2 days, then it got replaced by "SUMMERSAVINGS" which raised it to 999$
-
Just after I got this system I switched out the default hard drive for a 180 gb ssd, and did a clean install of windows 7 on it. Since then I've been getting BSODs every so often.
"A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated."
0x000000f4
I pulled the drive out of a working system, so I don't know why it's giving me problems now. I've run chkdsk and sfc and a few other diagnostic utilities and they have returned clear. Has anyone else experienced this? -
Got another system to try the drive on? You could also update your SSD's firmware. Might also wanna reinstall Intel Rapid Storage.
-
Anyone ever have the bottom left side of their laptop (where your left hand would be) heat up significantly?
I uninstalled Expresscache and the heat source disappeared...
Wonder if its something wrong with the ssd
-
Just received my y410P today. Swapped out the 1TB drive with a 500GB Samsung EVO, and placed the 1TB drive in a caddy after removing the DVD. I also have the 24GB M.2 NGFF SSD, and had a 64GB Sandisk flash laying around so I stuck that in the memory card slot.
This thing is fast. Great network speeds with the wireless N 7260, and no dropouts at all with the base driver. Love the red backlight on the keyboard also. The only issue I noticed which bothers me is the trackpad coating. The pad works fine, but it already looks like I have been using it a year or more. The black color just faded off almost immediately. Anyone else seeing that?kirkydaturkey likes this. -
Installing Rapid Storage appears to have fixed the problem, will see if the system remains stable tomorrow. This thing runs like a beast while plugged in, but when I run it on battery mode everything gets extremely throttled, even when I have high performance selected. Is there any way to prevent throttling when running on battery?
-
I'm planning to buy the Y410p but I read on several sites that it has a Wi-Fi issue and some problems with the touchpad.
Anyone of the owners had any issues like this ? if yes how did you fix it ?
Also on average usage, what's the battery life?
Sorry if anyone mentioned any of this info already, but going through 267 pages is going to take a lot of time
-
The previous Y410p had the Centrino 2230 which has driver issues that leads to unstable connection. The only driver that makes the Centrino 2230 stable is the 14.8.8.75 Windows 8 drivers. The new Y410p comes with the Intel Wireless-N 7260 which is much more stable than the Centrino 2230, especially in areas where there are 20 or more surrounding access points in range
-
Use Balanced mode instead of Power Saver, this way the CPU will not throttle to 800mhz. Also consider not using the Nvidia GPU when unplugged, as the Intel HD graphics will provide better performance under battery.
-
What?? I'm using 15.9.1.2 under Windows 7 and it's rock solid!
-
I just receiver my lenovo y410p.
I did run some test and i have some issue.
Based on 25 different measurements of 4700mq processor i should be getting more than 5 points in Cinebench 11.5.
But im getting only 4.7 points.
Can please some of you guys gun the benchmark and post some results?
I bought this laptop especially for rendering, but the results are very poor.
Temps with the benchmark are 90C.
Martin -
That's your issue right there. At 90°C the CPU throttles down to 2.4 ghz (down from 3.4ghz) to preserve itself thermally. You will need to find a way of lowering temperatures, either with a cooling pad, clock rate mod or with an undervolt. Also make sure that all vents and intakes are not covered.
-
I get those temperatures after couple seconds of the benchmark. Even the y510 is having much bigger score
-
You're using Windows 7 drivers which are excellent compared to Windows 8.1 drivers. It might be that the drivers for Windows 8.1 are less stable than 7 since WiFi problems have gone up considerably when Windows 8 and 8.1 were released (based on my observations at Intel forums and Lenovo forums). Anyways the 16.x.x.x drivers for 7260 series for Windows 8.1 is more stable than the Windows 8.1, 15.x.x.x drivers for Centrino series.
-
Unfortunately I'm planning to buy the Centrino 2230 model
but I guess the drivers problem was due to windows 8/8.1 being relatively new (I even read that at the time it was released, nvidia didn't have any drivers for its graphics card) -
Anyone using this laptop with Win 8.1 ?
-
I used to.

Alright, If I'm gonna play games like Max Payne3 and The Witcher 2 should I get a cooling pad? The temps I'm seeing on this thread are scaring me....
-
yup.
10char -
I play Witcher 2 and even without a cooling pad, MSI Afterburner reads my gpu temp as 85C which is way cooler than my last laptop so I'm not worried.
-
I get like 4.5 hours on battery but I switched out HDD for an SSD so I'm not sure what yours might be like. WiFi has never been an issue with me and I'm using Windows 8.1. As for the touchpad, depends which driver you got but I had Synaptics and the best fix for me was to uninstall it and then install the driver directly from the Synaptics website cause the one from Lenovo was utter POOP. Now I honestly love the touchpad!
-
Nice job! And as for the trackpad I just notice that it gets really smudgy and unattractive looking hah. I recently used a lint-free cloth with a dab of water to clean the whole computer and it looks like day one again in my opinion.
-
Jobine,
So just to confirm... even with an unmodified original y410p bios, 1.07 i believe, I can use the 7260? -
I'm not sure if the 7260 is included into the older 1.07 BIOS' whitelist, but the good news is that 1.07 can be modded.
I run 1.07 myself but i am using the 2230 since i don't have any issues with it. -
Does anyone have any experience what blinking of the keyboard means?
After turning on the PC the keyboard blinks and nothing happens.
Can it be the faulty ram? -
So let me get this straight, you hit power, the keyboard blinks and then it turns off? Does the Lenovo logo appear before it shuts off?
The keyboard lights up every time you power on the PC. However if you are unable to boot, that's a problem. -
Did you face any problems with the drivers ? specially the network and touchpad drivers ?
-

None. However i have the ELAN pad, i head that people are getting issues with synaptics. For network i used 16. something, network was reliable HOWEVER the network was much better using 14.8 under W8 or currently using 15.x under Windows 7. Also the network is pretty reliable under Linux, using the proprietatry iwlwifi driver under Debian Jessie, Kernel 3.11.
Got 2 laptops in my household with Intel's 2230, none run 8.1. -
Correct, i turn on the PC, keyboard blinks and screen is off. No logo shows up.
-
Have you tried booting with the side button? Does the BIOS selection menu appear?
When did this problem occur? Have you tampered with the BIOS? -
So we still don't have the ultrabay graphics option? I'm going to be discussing this blatant bait and switch deceptive marketing with my lawyer and all the screenshots of the product page and receipt from when I bought this laptop in July showing that the ultrabay graphics would be an option. I'm never purchasing a Lenovo product again.
-
Hi, i just recive my y410p. Its best than i was expected. But i have three questions:
1. The yellow usb port that is suposed to charge even if the laptop is off is not charging when it is off.
2. Why i can't update windows to 8.1. The update dont appears in the store, i dont find any way to make the upgrade.
3. The spec says that it have ultra bat but i order the one without doorbuster. Somebody can explain me that? -
All the posts I'm reading says that the Elan is the one with the issues!...I guess it depends from a laptop to another.
What exactly do you mean be "network was much better" ? Did you face any Wi-Fi network drops in the v.16 driver? -
naw, no problems at all with the network and touchpad. However your sound driver might need to be updated. I had to update mine to the latest one in order to fix my audio crackling during certain frequencies.

Opinion after 3 days of owning this laptop:
I wasted about an hour trying to figure out that when on battery, the Nvidia card was set to off, and that's why Far Cry 3 was SOOO SLOWWW. I am sure glad I bought a system with dedicated Graphics, as Intel has a LONG way to go before it comes close to Nvidia or AMD.
This thing is heavy. It may be because I am used to my Lenovo X220 which is 12 inches and very light, so I will chalk that up to power is heavy, and this has much more power, so I will get used to it.
Windows 8.1 is better than 8.0, but since this has no touch screen, I believe I am going to get a better start button software add-on that makes it feel more like Windows 7.
I have 1.584TB in this puppy, and am loving the 500GB Samsung SSD. I wish I went for the 1TB SSD and just dumped the HDD to make it lighter. I don't know what all the fuss was about in swapping out the drive with SSD and Caddy Mods some were having to do. Mine went in flawlessly in under an hour, which included the Samsung disk cloning process using their software. By the way, if you are going to clone the HDD and you are buying a Samsung EVO or Pro, make sure you get the whole kit and not the bare drive, as I had to buy a powered USB to SATA III adapter before I could clone it.
The Samsung software works great, and it's a free download from their site (only works with Samsung SSD though from what I hear)
The keyboard on this is just OK. I really like the red backlight, but I HATE where they put the home key and the tiny delete key. I am used to the Thinkpad line, which has much better key placement, even on the small X220 I was using(That is also a great tool if you don't need to play games, as the battery with the slice battery lasts for a whole day depending on use)
I find that even though I hit a key, it's easy to miss letters when typing, and I constantly hit the home key instead of backspace, but I think I my fingers will adapt.
This laptop is COOL, and QUIET, even when gaming for hours. Yeah, the left side vent gets a little warm, but that's expected, and it's not too hot to touch. I have used other laptops that are either too loud (MSI, Clevo) or too hot (Razer) This one is just about right. Kudos to the Lenovo design team.
But come on guys, why use a fingerprint and oil sponge for the baseplate, and especially the touchpad! I thought the touchpad was wearing pre-maturely, but noticed it's just soaking up the oil from my greasy fingers after a nice fried chicken dinner. I swear I even washed my hands, but this thing is a sponge.
The touchpad is actually very good. I even like the fact there are no individual buttons, as I had other laptops where the buttons broke, so this should be more sturdy. The size is fine, and it's very quick and responsive. I HATED the touchpad on the Lenovo X220, and ended up using the little red button all the time, which can actually get painful when used a lot. My HP had the biggest and best touchpad, but the individual buttons were wobbly and broke on that one, so this one is now better in my opinion.
This is built better than my 2011 vintage and much more expensive Thinkpad X220, and much better than my previous Toshiba, and HP laptops. Only the Lenovo X220 had better metal hinges, but the front was plastic and broke where the memory slot is located right at the left front corner. This feels much more substantial and tank like(including the weight) I like the metal feel.
I also like the dedicated side button for BIOS access. Makes it simple and straightforward. By the way, I have yet to find a mute function or key on this thing, is there one? or do you always have to use the FN left arrow to drop down the volume to zero?
I miss the Lenovo tools on the X220, which automatically downloaded all the latest Lenovo drivers for you based on your registered hardware. It made it real simple to keep the system updated. (Lenovo's online download for drivers menu sucks, as it's easy to download the wrong bits and screw your system up)
I have been gaming with the laptop on my lap sitting in bed, using my old laptop as a mouse pad with my wireless Gigaware laser mouse. Even if this thing did have a more noisy fan, you wouldn't notice due to the really good sound system. The JBL speakers are light years better than any other laptop I have owned, save for a real old HP (early 2000's vintage) which was like a boom box. I no longer need earphones for watching movies or playing games.
I thought I was going to be disappointed with the 900p TN screen, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the colors and brightness. It's brighter than the X220, so it makes up for the lack of IPS and viewing angles. The side to side angles are fine, but the vertical angle needs to be set properly or it gets washed out fast.
Parts list I used:
Lenovo Y410P model 59399853 (Type 6492) with 3 Year warranty and accidental damage $1040 including tax.
Samsung EVO 500GB SSD from Amazon on Black Friday for $325
LENOVO L11L6R02 72wh Battery Replacement $79.68
Sandisk 64GB micro SD $35
Universal 9.5mm caddy $23.95
If you add that up, it's a heck of a lot less than a Razer Blade, and cheaper than most of the other gaming laptops out there that are in the 14 inch and under category. So far, for the money, I believe it's a great value. I am a road warrior, and travel 3-5 days a week through airports. I will post a report later on that experience, and if the thing holds up. The good news is if it does break, the accidental damage warranty should ease the pain for at least the next three years.
That said, If Razer or ASUS get their acts together and lower their pricing (and Asus puts a better Nvidia card in the UX301LA or UX302LG, or Razer uses a new screen in their 14 incher) then this will go to a one of my kids or nephews and daddy's gonna get a new toy.Jobine and kirkydaturkey like this. -

1. Yellow port is turned off in bios. If you want that feature you have to turn it on.
2. Windows Search, Update, after couple of updates it will say 8.1 update available.
3. I think dvd drive is in the ultrabay?
Others will correct me if I'm wrong
-
1. How can i enable always on usb port?
2. i hope windows 8.1 will work?
3. so correct me if i am wrong, everybody have ultrabay? what is doorbuster? is the same that ultrabay? -
1. You need to enable USB charge in the BIOS. It is most likely disabled by default
2. It should appear in the store, unless you are already running 8.1 (if you have the start menu in W8), be sure to install every Windows update first
3. Can you clarify a bit more on this? -
There is none. I used Keytweak to remap my "left click" button on the keyboard to work as a mute button.
PS: do you have the 72w/h battery or 48w/h?
As for ASUS i'd wait for Maxwell for a G46VW refresh. -
Please do. The Ultrabay was one of the big reasons I chose this laptop.
