Hello! I am in a time pressed situation for a laptop, and I saw that some of the owners had an incorrect estimated shipping date (and actually received fast air shipping). Was this through the Lenovo website??? Thanks.

Did you order through the Lenovo website? And what is the Barnes and Noble EPP? Sorry I'm a noob :( I was checking out on lenovo and I'm leaving 7/6, but the est. shipping date was 7/11. But if it gets this air shipping, then I can get it in time...

The problem is there is no such thing as a Y400 750m ultrabay or a Y410P 750m ultrabay.

So basically the 14 inchers are doomed to stay single gpu'd?

    Oh well.

Right now the only ultrabay you can buy separately is the Y400's 650m ultrabay. The 750m version is supposedly coming next month.

Hi, I've been contemplating on purchasing this laptop for awhile now, and today (June 26th, 2013) is RedFlagDeals.com's last day for their exclusive coupon.

    Computers & Tablets/eReaders : Lenovo: IdeaPad Y410p i7-4700 $849 and More! | Toronto Deals - RedFlagDeals.com

$849.99 before tax, with 4.25% cashback (around 36 dollars).

As someone looking for a reliable, durable, laptop to carry around for work purposes (I am a part-time web designer), I have been considering lenovo y410p as an option.

My main use for this laptop is to surf the internet, design occasional graphics, and mostly code. I do game, so having that option to run some pretty graphic-intensive games would be a plus.

Here are my thoughts and some questions so far:

    - I like the 1600x900p resolution. I dislike the 1300x768 resolution.
    - I plan to use Windows 8 with Classic Shell, and many people are trying to downgrade their OS to Windows 7 with a multitude of problems. That will not apply to me.
    - This laptop apparently weighs more than advertised, hovering around 5.5lbs as some have reported. As long as it doesn't feel like a brick, I'm okay.
    - The switching of GPUs is something I am not familiar with. Maybe I have been living under a rock for the past couple of years, but will I have issues if most of my work is as listed above? Do I have to make special modifications to the games that I play?
    - Looking at a couple of other forums, apparently their "Intel Centrino Wirless N-2230" wireless card has many issues. Hopefully this will not affect me. No internet on a laptop is like having a tv without cable (and even then it sucks).
    - This will be my first purchase of a HDD + SSD cache. How does that work exactly? Will my OS run on the SSD while the rest of my files are on the HDD?

My last question would be is it worth it to buy my lenovo with these specifications and thoughts in mind? Is there a cheaper option that would suit my needs more?

Thanks for your inputs and responses.

    1. Im with you on that one
    2. Alright, whatever floats your boat, personally i prefer windows 8 because of its performance, security and better file browser
    3. Single 750m models weigh 5 pounds. SLI models weigh 6. y410p's all come with a single 750m.
    4. You can go in the nividia control panel, in the 3d options, and switch between the 750m for performance or the 4600HD for battery life.
    5. I heard reinstalling the driver corrects all issues
    6. Basically, all of your most used software is cloned to the SSD to improve performance. Lets say every time you open your laptop, you always launch MS word, Firefox and a James Bond movie. The caching program will detect an increased use and place these files on the SSD, and they will load 2x quicker. Also, the boot files are placed on the caching SSD as well, improving startup times.
    7. Id say its a good deal, i have roughly the same uses are you and im satisfied with my purchase, the only thing is that im using the Intel graphics for 80% of my tasks, as i only need the 750m to render videos or play some games like BF3.

    1. The x768 resolution would be a deal-breaker for me. I for one am glad there's a x900p option.
    2. I'm willing to give Windows 8 a try, that being said, if I don't like it I can install Classic Shell.
    3. Okay, that's not so bad then if it's roughly 5lbs.
    4. Does the laptop do most of the control by default? Say I set the power options to "Power Saver", will it switch to the Intel GPU automatically?
    5. I've been reading a thread on the official intel forums, and some say reinstalling drivers does not work, while others say it does. Some have this problem, and some don't. So I'm not sure.
    6. Okay, so Windows "should" boot up faster than just a regular HDD, since it's being used 100% of the time?
    7. That's great to hear.

    Thanks!

Pretty much the same with mine except it seems like the middle two doesn't light up?
Mine is something like this I believe, where the bottom doesn't light up.

    1. I got the 768p it is fine for gaming but 900p is the way to go for your uses.
    2. Just install ClassicShell from the get go, you can hardly tell the difference between 7 and 8 with it installed IMHO.
    3. Haven't weighed mine yet but it seems quite light compared to any other gaming class laptop I have used.
    4. By default any 3d application will use the Nvidia GPU, I don't think power settings affect which GPU is used. You can right click on an application and there is a context menu "Run with graphics processor..." that lets you choose which GPU to run that app on, you can also go into the Nvidia control panel and set which GPU to use on an application by application basis.
    5. The Wifi problems are related to the Bluetooth module included on the 2230. If you can live without Bluetooth just disable the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager and you'll be fine. A little birdie told me the Bluetooth problems should be fixed in the 16.x version of the Proset drivers (15.8 is the current), but not sure when those will be released (soon I think).
    6. The caching uses Intel Smart Response Technology, basically it keeps a copy of your commonly used files on the SSD for faster access; it is automatic and adaptive to your useage patterns. More info: Join SSD and HDD Together: Intel® Smart Response Technology
    7. I got the 768p model for $689 and I think I got amazing bang for my buck, that said the 900p screen and cache SSD are great upgrades for your usages and worth the price difference (plus you can't get the $689 deal anymore :p )

Windows 8.1 "preview" is available now. Reviews seem good so far...

Download Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows

That link takes you to MS's website to download a small update. After your pc reboots you should be prompted to go to the Windows App store to DL the Windows 8 Preview. This is a ~2.5GB file. It'll take awhile.

This is prerelease software, so absolutely make a backup first! Use the Onekey that came with the Y410p or an application like Acronis.

The default is always the 750M, you have to specify the integrated graphics via the right click menu or the Nvidia control panel. AFAIK it will not automatically use the Intel graphics on battery, only when you specify it.

Yeah that's the one. Copy that over, you also might need to run the Win8 system repair tool to get it to work with the modified partition scheme.

I have been looking through this forum and I do have a couple n00b questions because I am heavily considering buying this product, particularly because right now it is on sale on Lenovo's website. I wanted to say that a lot of this has been really helpful for me, even when I don't understand half of what you're saying.
Before I ask my questions, I would like you understand my situation: this laptop would be my only laptop for college and while -for now- the only gaming I would do would be Sims 3 or Sims City (lame, I know, ^_^), I do lots of multitasking and put a lot of demand on the computers I use.

1.) This may seem stupid, but does it have a port for an ethernet cable? I couldn't really find the answer anywhere and I thought it might be assumed, but I didn't want to take the chance, because I think that in my dorm, an ethernet cable will be my main source of internet if not the only one.

2.) Some people on the internet have mentioned US shippings having the wrong processors or ones that are not as advertised. Has anyone had this problem here? Or was it only for the Y500 or Y400s?

3.) Do you think that when the next windows comes out, it will be easy to convert? Possibly easier than to go back to windows 7? I have windows 8 right now, by force, and while I would love to have windows 7, I'm too cowardly to go backward.

4.) How is the glare (indoors and outdoors)? And is a matte screen protector safe/worth it? I was hoping to be able to work outside, at least some times. Does the matte protector sacrifice screen quality?

5.) Is the bevel removal worth it/risky? I have never tried anything like it, but I did save the previously posted instructions on how to do so. If I did get a matte screen protector, is it possible that it could cover the bevels and remove their glare? I thought that might be a handy trick, even if I bought a matte protector and cut them out only to fit on the bevels....

    6. (and lastly!)) With the new NVIDIA driver out that seems to have solved a lot of issues, should I use that one or one from Lenovo? There is the understanding that I may be almost entirely on the weaker graphics card, but I may still use the stronger one.

    Thanks for your time! :)

    1) Yes it has ethernet.

    2) Only the SLI y510p's are shipped with the wrong processors. If you are not ordering a y510p with sli, you will have the right CPU.

    3) People have reported lots of issues when downgrading to w7. Ive owned a Vista thinkpad and upgrading to 7 and 8 was fairly painless.

    4) Not sure, havent recieved it yet :L

    5) Not sure. I wouldnt tinker, but thats up to you.

    6) Use the lenovo one, 7xxm series is still in beta according to Nvidia.

2.5~5.5 hours depending on the brightness and what you're doing on battery. For just web browsing with brightness lowered a bit, I'd say about 4 hours or so.

My Y410P uses the GT750M ONLY when a game launches, or I specifically right click on an item and select "Run with graphics processor (integrated or High performance NVIDIA)" The rest of the time it runs on the Intel HD4600. The story is the same whether on AC power or battery.

What does that mean about my order!? I ordered on the 25th, and originally it was supposed to ship the 28th. However it took a day for them to reject my credit card, and now I have an estimate for 7/12. I ordered the second level version of the 410p, is that a different one than yours?

I hate this, lenovo is shady in customer support and delivery. My computer and TV died on me so I only have a nexus 7 to survive for 2 weeks. All the while I am concerned that the WiFi card or black screen flashes are going to happen. Also no one knows if the ultrabay GPU is ever coming out. I hate lenovo, even though I'm confident that the y410p will be a really good laptop for the money.

Side note: why is everything on lenovo constantly on sale, more specific on I believe the y series has been on sale for $400+ ever since it came out. What's the deal? I feel like they are pulling some tax scam, by reporting losses, compared to what their base prices are.

I ordered my y410p on the 10th and got it on the 28th. Patience, young padawan. Free shipping =/= fast shipping.

And the whole sale thing is just a gammick to get you to buy it, trust me, its a ~800$ price range laptop anyways :b

I ordered mine on June 14th, and it arrived on the 19th. I ordered mine over the phone, and i specifically stated that I had vacation coming up (week of the 19th) that would be GREAT for setting up a new laptop. I had it in my hands before the estimated ship date.

Get on a chat with a CS rep and ask about the ship date. See if it's possible for them to bump the date up.

Just talked to a sales rep on the phone, and he told me the ultrabay products for my Y410p would be available in 1-2 weeks in mid-July, and he confirmed with his supervisor.

I also talked to a guy in sales chat after hanging up the phone, and he told me an identical thing. He also said the ultrabay 750m for the y410p will run around $220, but that the actual sales price when it is released could differ, but that was his estimate.

Since I got this laptop for gaming and Uni work this upcoming Fall, one of my concerns was what would SLI do to battery life. Well he said putting in the ultrabay gets rid of switchable graphics, but it'll be completely possible to turn off the ultrabay card on battery if you want to preserve the battery, in which he said it can last nearly 5 hours. Not sure if he's overestimating that a bit, but still being able to turn off the ultrabay card while taking notes in lecture is nice, the battery should be able to last plenty for that. Hope this information helps you guys with concerns out.

It's been said in this thread before, but I'll say it again. Don't buy this laptop hoping for impressive battery life, especially with SLI enabled. You can expect 2-3 hours of web browsing on battery. The 5 hour claim is a complete and total fallacy. If your wifi is off and you're just taking notes, maybe you can do better, but not 5 hours better. If you need the laptop to last through a day of hour+ lectures I'd suggest removing the ultrabay GPU. Now that I think about it, I wonder if disabling 1 or two of the CPU cores would bump up battery life noticeably. You really don't need much processing power to run Notepad or Word.

Nvidia Control Panel --) 3D settings --) Preferred Graphics Processor

In there u have 3 options:
    - Auto-Select
    - Integrated
    - Nvidia

    Pick the Nvidia.

    0.8$/gb. Not bad.

I tried putting an OCZ SSD in mine and i worked, i dont see why not.

But then again, mine has NGFF SSD + HDD combo, which i prefer over pure SSD.

I put in a 840 Pro 256GB drive in mine. It works great and is crazy fast. It is a thinner 7mm drive, instead of the 9.5mm thickness of other SSDs. It is mounted by side screws, so it is "suspended" in the air a bit, in the enclosure.

Considering i have a bilingual Canadian French/English model, i think it should be possible, however make sure to order it from Lenovo's official site, and probably from one of their spanish-speaking distributors (ex:mexico/spain) to get a spanish version.

Also, you can always order an english model and just remap the keys.

Unfortunately for me, I only find this model (Y410P) on the US online store.

Guess I'm getting the english model then. Its a shame that I can't configure that option.

    Still a great laptop though..

    1. Not everyone has an extra 200-300$ to dump on getting a big SSD
    2. I need the extra storage space
