Alienwares are too fat, may as well build a desktop.

I agree with you. The alienware 14 is freaking 6 or 7 pounds if i remember correctly. Thats a huge amount of weight. True that MSI gaming laptops don't have very good cooling because they only use single fans in their laptops but my friend has the lowest speced ge 60 in my country with 4800mq and gt 750m. Its a really great laptop being 15.6" and only 200grams heavier than the y410p.

Anyways, let's keep on topic. -
Lenovo Y 15 inch Removable Graphics GT755M5 (Lenovo Warranty) - Buy at Best Price from iPmart Malaysia
I am thinking of getting that, apparently popped only 2 days ago. I was looking for it since November.
I won't be getting anything new for a very, very long time - so that's a perfect way for me to increase some performance, therefore increasing the 'productive' life of my Y510P without actually having to buy a whole new rig.
Any thoughts on that site, from what I see - it's legit...?
(Yes, I am aware I need to get a 170W AC, too) -
the site has some positive reviews, so i think it is safe.
but the card is only 172 USD plus shipping to U.S !!!! isn't that suspicious?
Y400 Removable Graphics GN35 | Lenovo | (US)
the official price is 230 USD
_any word about the M750M4 ? did any one even make it yet?_ -
Malaysia has little to no tax on laptops and its parts at the moment as they are trying to get more of their citizens to become computer literate and move up in both economy and living environment. At least thats what my dad told me. He works in malaysia.
-
Don't get SLI. Trust me. Spend the cash on an external monitor. Or a SSD. Single GT 755 will handle any game at 720p and most at 900p high settings.
I like thin and light, but i still want enough room to have a HDD+SSD combo in the laptops i buy.
Also, i'm not even sure whether i should get a laptop anyways. Maybe some upgrades to the desktop, or a tablet, once Tablets get 4GB RAM I might start looking into them more.
Also the Y50 will be a pioneer, not because of thinness, but because of 4K + affordability.
Anyways, what reassures me about this thread is that half the issues posted in this thread are all software issues, which are fixed one way or the other. -
Why 4GB Ram on a tablet? I thought they were only meant for basic stuff.
I'm kinda sceptic with the 4k screen, the video card on it won't be able to keep up. Maybe it will be useful for people who work on video editing or in photography but otherwise I find this gimmicky.

Anyways, /derail -
Yo, is a cooling pad necessary to game on the 410 or does it cool itself enough already?
-
Not required. My 410p does just fine without one.
-
Can someone upload their y410p recovery drive's image....
please it would really be helpful. -
Isn't product keys tied to motherboards? You can't activate the windows of another person's y410p.
-
Sadly you should have imaged or made a backup of your original Win8, because otherwise it is lost forever, so you will have to re-buy your OS or acquire it somehow (
), and personally i recommend Windows 7.
Also while it is possible to install Mavericks on this laptop, be sure to note that:
- Your GT 755M might not work, so use the 4600HD to be safe
- You will need a non-Intel Wireless card.
I can't get Windows 7 to work opimally with my Y410p, the CPU lags and doesn't reach it full potential and when I look at CPU usage- it spikes to about 15 % max and keeps changing even when I'm playing a CPU intensive app, it lags and it's not smoothIs there something I'm missing, what chipset driver for the 4700 MQ is the latest one for Windows 7. What am I missing? I have installed Windows 7 twice but CPU is really lagging. Please help

Does the game only use 1 core? What game is it?

Im planning to get a new headset. Anyone knows if the lenovo y410p supports surround 2.1/5.1/7.1?
-
Im running farcry 3, in high with a cpu temperature of 78 C. Is it right?
-
-
-
-
lol i get 87 degrees after playing 10 minute of gunz 2. my ambient is like 27 degrees though. This game isn't even that intensive. My cpu usage never went above 50%. Turbo boost didn't kick in though.
-
now it's running great and far cry 3 is running smooth as silk! I'm getting temps of between 85 and 87 degrees for CPU, is that normal?? Has anyone tried to take off the backplate to get some more air

[I was thinking of formatting and installing windows 8 again - once I receive the laptop to get rid of all the bloadwares and custom partitions etc. It used to be that the manufacturers used to put cd-key below the laptop on a sticker. Now a days they put it in bios?] -
You clone the HDD to the SSD, then replace the HDD with the new cloned SSD drive. If you get an HDD Caddy, you can then replace the useless DVD with the 1TB drive into the slot where the DVD was. I get over 500MB/s with the 512GB Samsung EVO SSD. Boots in seconds. makes the laptop act like a tablet. -
Thanks for all the info sanman, so basically a caddie is a frame right ? Where you put an HDD ? So I take out the HDD and put it in the ultrabay
I think I'll use it with the HDD for now, maybe it will be enough for me.
But just to know, is a 120GB SSD enough ?

Lenovo's recovery software should have the option to create a set of recovery discs.
If you want to do a clean install, the Windows license key should be on a sticker on the bottom of the computer (sometimes it's under the battery), but be aware that the OEM key may not activate a retail version of Windows. There are ways to convert an ISO to an OEM version. It also won't work to use a Windows 8 key if you are installing Win-7.
-
Just get windows 8.1 core which is not hard to find if you look. It will be preactivated after you install it and will not at anytime ask you for a key because it's embedded in the bios.
If you want to know what your product key is or even backup the current activation blobs you can download advanced tokens manager and it will reveal your embedded key along with backing up the activation.
Advanced Tokens Manager - Josh Cell Softwares
I did this on my y410p along with many other machines I have owned.
I did a fresh install of windows 8.1 core the moment I got it and yeah it's preactivated since the key is bios embedded. -
I finally had some time to do a real-world full battery rundown test with the Y410P using the 72wh battery. The power settings were set to balanced, and the screen was set to 90% brightness. The backlit was off on the keyboard.
The application mix was standard business networking with daily E-mail, PPT presentations, WEBEX meetings, Web Browser, Youtube, and backup over the network running in the background for about an hour. Anti-Virus also ran in the background for about 45 min.
I started at exactly 9:45AM, and the system finally shut down the screen and went into sleep mode to protect data at 4:05PM. So the battery lasted 6 Hours and 20 Min.
Not bad for $799 gaming laptop. (Y410P 900P with 24GB cache and Samsung 512GB EVO SSD, 1TB in CADDY)Jobine likes this. -
Wait, 6:20 on 90% brightness + mixed load?
I'm impressed, that's VERY similar to what you'd get on a Yoga 2 Pro, and up to par with the Clevo W350ST with 86w/h. I get around 4:30 on mine, 48w/h, 45% brightness, mixed load, modded CPU, bluetooth off.
This is crazy considering the Y510p SLI is known for it's terrible battery life.
Can anyone test if brightness has a considerable impact on battery life? -
I am using the LENOVO L11L6R02 battery from laptop battery | laptop battery online storeJobine likes this. -
Thanks for the link, but i still don't need more than 4 hours for the most part. I'll definitely look into it in a few months though.
And i agree, for me the last 10% is like 1hour/45mins. And it powers off at 4%. -
Maybe sanman gets more battery life because of his SSD, I heard they consume less power than HDDs.
Sanman why did you buy another battery? You were not satisfied with the stock one ? -
Anybody using Razer Surround driver for their sound eq? I wonder if there's a way to use it without it turning down the sound so much. Sound is much louder when Razer Surround is turned off.

so, gearing up for arrival of my baby (due tomorrow) - it has no msata or ngff connector (as per lenovo customer care).
I am looking for SSDs and caddy
ssd goes in laptop, 1tb in caddy.
I think 240 gig is the magic number since it allows me to keep critical progs, [ so i can remove t1b from bay to reduce weight or add seconds to battery life]
for canadians, do I see a better deal then crucial 240 gig @ 159~160 CDN

I dont know which set of controllers is better then what, but this refurb 120gig samsung pro looks tempting too

The 120GB EVO 840 on bestbuy was exactly the one I was looking at, except that I'm too scared to get the refurbished one. For 18$ more you get a new one: Samsung 120 GB 2.5" Internal Solid State Drive (MZ-7TE120BW) : Solid State Drives (SSD) - Best Buy Canada

oh I am secretly waiting for a miracle of finding out it has ngff so I don't have to buy the damn caddy. But eitherway, I am seriously thinking of spending the extra 50 and getting 250gig.
I think I will feel the extra 100 gig working in your favour. putting in a few games and boom!
if only the pros here, would advise a good quality caddy and ssd
also, just reviewing the previous posts, I just noticed your question to me.
I was really mad and they offered me the 5% discount - when purchasing ship date was 12, bumped to 17 then 20! (i went mad at 20) -
What is ngff ?
Oh ok lol, my ship date was february 27 from the start so I was like "Ok then."
But why would you need the 100 extra gb, I still don't get it. I'm kind of new to this whole SSD thing but you basically put all your most accessed files on your SSD and you put the rest on your HDD right? So why 250Gb ? 120gb seems enough -
120GB is enough for the OS, 250GB is when you want to put some of your games on the SSD if you want them to load faster. Use the HDD for your files, though. Also remember to set the HDD to spin off when not in use, it helps with battery life, and with system noise (goes from quiet to dead silent when the HDD is not spinning).

I also use a 64GB micro SD card to copy music and videos to my smartphone. The Samsung SSD is "wicked fast" as they say in Boston. I can cold boot in under 10 seconds, and wake-up is almost instant. Access to this laptop with the SSD feels more like a tablet actually. If I had known this, I would have pulled the trigger much sooner on the SSD. In fact, I am thinking of placing the 512GB in the caddy, and getting a 1TB Samsung as my main drive. 1.5TB of SSD would be a light, silent fast heaven.
