What are the benefits of having it installed? I haven't noticed any reason to install it again, but I'm interested to see if others benefit from it and how exactly. -

Just got done having a tech support sesh with Lenovo. Gotta say, pretty weird having them take total control of my computer, but really useful in seeing everything that they do to troubleshoot problems.
Here's what they did..
1) Checked to make sure I had latest Intel WLAN driver from their site. Redownloaded the package anyways, ran it, clicked repair.
2) Went to Device Manager to change the advanced properties of the wlan driver. 802.11n to disabled, and Ad Hoc Qos Mode to WMM enabled. (The guy told me that this driver does not support N-Wireless so he did this to it) He also checked to make sure that under Power Management the box was unchecked.
3) In Device Manager, updated wlan driver to Microsoft driver going through the "Browse Computer" and "Let me pick".
3) Finally he ran the command prompt as admin and refreshed the dns when typing in "netsh winsock reset" to hopefully fix the "Limited Connection" problem that Win8.1 users get a lot.
Who knows if this will fix things but since checking results at speedtest.net I do notice that my Mbps download speed is slower. However I'm hoping to see more reliability regardless of speed.
I'll keep the community updated if I find these troubleshooting methods to be inadequate. Even if so, I continue to find Lenovo's tech support to be the best I've dealt with. They can't fix everything but dang are they helpful in doing everything they can.
Should also note that I wouldn't recommend these steps unless you are really having problems with your wifi. -

The default wifi drivers that windows uses for the intel wireless card were made by intel. -
Lol. I also thought the second partition was an SSD, but when opened up a drive manager to partition drive C into 2 parts, i figured it was just a partition of the 1TB HDD. Backup up it's contents to my External HDD. Formatted it, joined it to Drive C. It was then Fill 916 GB. Went ahead to Partition as intended. Now i have Drive C as 416GB and Drive D as 499GB.
Better this way

Yesterday, while i was playing dota 2, it suddenly became very laggy and choppy. I opened up fraps and it showed i had constant 25fps. Weird.
I checked and i made sure i was plugged in and on power so its not the problem.
I then turned off v-sync and my fps went up to 55-70. Weird. -
Ignore. Mods pls delete

V-Sync artificially synchronizes your fps with your refresh rate, but it is extremely intensive. I'd only recommend using V-Sync if you have screen tearing issues. -

Generally you don't want v-sync on unless you're getting massive screen tearing. Turning it on drops performance and causes some screen lag if the gpu can't maintain 60+ fps at all times. -

Hey guys! Please does anyone know any 3rd party app that can prevent battery from charging to 100%. To increase the battery life span. The one in pre-installed Energy management app takes it down to 60% which is too low. I want customization. Say 95%. Dat would be fine... Thanks

Hey, so I'm thinking about getting this computer; what is the actual weight of it and how much battery life are people getting in real life?
-
-
i'm getting 4-5 hours while watching youtube videos on about half brightness. I think i have the 72wh battery but i can't be sure.

Runs Games like a BEAST!
(ULTRA SETTINGS)
FIFA 14 and NBA2K13 - 60+ FPS
GTA IV - 50+ FPS
Batman Arkham Origins - 50+ FPS
Call Of Duty Ghosts - 50+ FPS
Saint Row IV - 45+ FPS
Tomb Raider - 40+ FPS
Sleeping Dogs - 35+ FPS
And my own laptop's specs are
4th Gen Intel Core i7-4700MQ @ 2.4GHz x4 (6M Cache, with Turbo up to 3.40 GHz),
8GB RAM (1600MHz),
2GB Dedicated Nvidia GeForce GT 755M (+ onboard Intel HD 4600),
1TB Hard Drive,
14" 1366x768 display,
Windows 8.1 (Out of the box)
I used one Windows Experience Index (WEI) app for Windows 8.1 and it shows that CPU and Memory score 8.1 which is very good. Couldn't read the GPU probably because the Intel HD 4600 is always running till i launch a game. Of course Primary Hard disk was 5.9 (Standard HDD)

Another question from me, as my ship date nears, I realize I need a working ISO file to attempt the clean windows 8 install. Does anyone know where I can get a good ISO? I was able to find one for windows 7 but do not remember where. A clean install of windows 8, then loading the drivers would be option one.
Assuming that does not work, option two would be to make a recovery disk on the new laptop itself before trying option one. (I'm guessing lenovo does not ship a recovery disk with the laptop?)
The third option will be a straight clone, the thing I do not like about this is that I will need to buy an enclosure.
Option 2 and 3 also have the downfall of transferring all that bloatware over to my shiny new SSD. I always prefer a clean install of windows. I am going to try to tolerate windows 8 but Id much rather have windows 7, if anyone has a suggestion for down grading I am all ears. I am not getting windows 8 pro so it will not have "downgradable rights". I tried to tolerate windows 8 on my work computer.... F'ing nightmare. -

Clearly I am asking for a "good ISO" for a legit copy of windows, not my fault microsoft makes life hard on its customers. -
Pretty sure the Windows site gives a ISO version of OS's for free through their downloader or whatever, obviously you'll have to purchase the activation key.
I remember doing this when I had to create a bootable USB stick and used Microsoft's tool. Otherwise, yeah you're reaching for piracy, which isn't allowed. -

Hi, is there a faster way to turn the laptop off than to put the mouse in the lower right corner, click on settings, click on On/Off and click on turn off ?
Too many clicks -

hi guys, I ed up big time :S . I got the lenovo y410p ...acccidentally spilled water over it . the machine was functioning when it happened. though I turned it off now. most of the water spill was between keyboard and the screen. and to the speaker on the right hand side. I have removed the battery and let the device to dry (since the laptop was on table, some of it went and touched the surface below (though I don't know if it went in, but it did defo went into the right speaker. )
Apart from praying, what should I do? -
Put it inside a clean pillow case and over some uncooked rice (that you may not want to eat anymore)? That's what I do to my cellphones when I accidentally submerge/spill it in/with water. Soaks up the moisture.
-
Why would you ever have uncooked rice that you don't want to eat??

I have avoided Windows 8.1 because of the issues stated on this thread.
Uncooked rice is great for drawing out moisture.
Wrt Linus, you do not need to write command lines to install everything. There are software and package managers (well in Linux Mint). The only difficulty would be the lack of games for Linux compared to Windows. It was challenging. However Linux gives you a faster performance with your system. -
Have you guys undervolted/overclocked? Can anyone point me to the right direction? Thank you.
-
-
undervolting the cpu is simple.
I used intel xtu and undervolted by 80mv. Seems to be stable for most 4700mq -
Thanks, I'll try undervolting instead of OCing
