If you are a gamer, i would say undervolt the cpu and just overclock your gt 755m like mad.
For some games, its worth pushing the gpu for those extra frames. I might actually consider ocing my gpu to make it get 70+fps for dota 2 so it wont drop below the 60 fps mark.

Or go into power settings and change what it does when you push the power button to "shut down".

Do you have Tested / safe OC frequencies for the 755M?

Yes. This is actually like the fastes method. Until u just mistakenly hit that power button. Happened to me twice. I almost lost it. Lol. :D

I'm now running on +135 core and +500 memory.
Seeing significant fps improvements. about 10fps
I used to get 50-70 fps in dota 2, now its more like 70-80 fps
Lowest i've seen it drop to when thers a huge amount of creeps + battle is 69 fps on max settings at 1366x768

And what do your temps look like. I suggest you use an app that alarms you whenever your temp reaches 90 or 95 degrees

huh. that's quite a massive overclock. I'm jealous because I can't even bump my gpu up more than 50/100 before artifacts start appearing... which is a pretty insignificant bump in performance to justify the several fps gained and increase in temperature.

Played 2 games of dota 2. Total lasted about 1h 20mins or so.
Temps were quite normal. Cpu at around 75 and gpu peaked at 77

Huh, I guess this just proves that the 750/755M cards are basically just OCed 650Ms. The highest stable OC I use on my 650M is 1105/2660mhz or +315mhz core and +660mhz memory.

Heck I can even record with that OC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOyF3B72a3w

Its quite heavily overclocked though. The gt 755m i'm on is 1228mhz core and 1500mhz memory.
I dropped 200mhz memory overclock since i did benchmarks and it showed very little difference.

Ok, now that I've got my caddy installed with the 1tb HDD, I wanted to clean it all and make just two partitions: one with the win8 OS, and the other just an NTFS partitioned volume (about 110gb/820gb)

When I checked Computer Management, I saw this:
    screenshot.1.jpg

I'm guessing the activation key for the built-in Win8 OS is in the 260mb EFI? And what about those two 1000mb partitions (especially the one labelled OEM)?
The Lenovo partition I can delete, I've already backed-up the drivers. I just pretty much want to prepare 110gb for a Win8 OS installation when I feel like dual booting and checking out Win8, but how the heck do I get the activation from the EFI? Thoughts anyone?

    Thank you.

My best guess is u can't. You still end up buying Windows 8 original disc for (lord know how many $$$). Or using a private version for free.

Bummer. I'm thinking that I paid for that licensed version of Win8 (justifying why the laptop cost that much).

Also, I got a free, 3 year McAfee Internet Security eCard which says 'Invalid and unsupported if sold without Lenovo Idea PC) and I also need to register (maybe my laptop) online. When I booted up Win8 a while ago, McAfee Internet Security was already installed but is asking for a key to unlock all features. Also, in the Lenovo partition of my HDD, aside from the drivers, there is an 'application' folder which has files for McAfee Installer.

I'm thinking if it'll still work on a Win7 OS?

EDIT: Nope, nevermind. It seems my norton is better. Still, such a waste though..

AFAIK the key is embedded in the BIOS, if you get a copy of a Win8 install disc of the correct version it will activate automatically after install. Getting the disc is the hard part now as MS no longer has any direct downloads. I'll leave that part as an exercise for the user ;)

So I've decided that I'm gonna install Windows 7 on my Y410p. Anybody have any cautionary tips before I do so? Like is it difficult to get the correct drivers? How could I go back to Windows 8 if I choose to do so?

Personally i love Windows 8. It is slot faster than 7. It got better in 8.1. And even better in 8.1 Update 1 (The one that leaked). I would say stay with Win 8.1 :)

I'd stay with it too cause I was happy with it until all the wifi problems I've been having with it lately since an update about a month ago now :(
Lenovo support helped as much as they could without me having to to send it in, and the tech guy admitted there's a lot of problems with Intel wifi drivers and Win 8.1 so I should have never allowed the wifi driver update. I'm gonna restore back to factory settings tomorrow and see if it fixes things (boy do I wish I didn't have to because that takes too much time). But if that doesn't end up helping then I'll see if installing Win 7 will help.

Anybody know how to get back to Win 8 though if I were to install Win 7?

The windows 8 key should be imbedded in the bios, so all you'll need is a disk. Also there's the onekey recovery partition, though I'm not exactly sure how that works...

Any reason not to do Win7 Ultimate? I get a bunch of software for free through my college and Win7 Ultimate is the only version of Win7 offered so I was just gonna do that.
By saying "make sure that thing doesn't work Google Page Rank get detected", do you just mean make sure the drivers are legit or what?
I think I'll download the free Win8 Pro from my school and make USB bootable drive to install it since I can't think of a way I can revert back to Win8 OS after switching to Win7. Or can I?
    Thanks guys :)

I hear you bro! Fresh install is tiring!!! The day I bought this laptop, I was excited. And sad also because I had to start setting it up. LOL. :p

Why not try create system restore point first then go into device manager and attempt to roll back the WiFi driver. Or just uninstall it. And see if Windows installs a default one. And don't you have the drivers that came in second partition of the computer's hard drive?

Naw man. Already done all of that. I can only go back so far because I have Windows 8.1 installed. If I had just plain Windows 8 installed then it'd be a different story. Not really sure why but that's what I found to be the case and the Lenovo tech support agreed with me =(
As for the recovery partition with the drivers on it, I'm not sure where to find the drivers right now. My partition setup shows:

    Capture.PNG

Where my original hard drive is now in the optical bay drive. Any clue as to which partition would contain the OEM drivers and how I could access it?

I have a bad feeling that I deleted that partition for some reason when I switched the 1tb drive to the caddy. I don't remember doing so but I wouldn't be surprised haha. Thanks for the news man
Well if anybody is feeling superhuman, I would GREATLY appreciate some links to them uploading their "Driver" folder contents that are supposed to have the oem drivers. Doesn't even need to be the whole thing but maybe just the Network Card drivers cause I would mostly just like to see if I can get successful results from the drivers that aren't on the Lenovo website.
This is what the Lenovo tech support guy was initially wanting to do to help me with my problem but he couldn't locate the driver folder, and now I know why haha.

I have not updated that many drivers on the system. I tend to have only used the system for offline gaming and only update with faulty drivers. Windows Update is chomping at the bit to fully run on the system.

I heard that windows 7 pro is lighter and as good as Win7 ultimate so no need for it.
but since ultimate is what u college is offering, go for it.

    about drivers,
I suggest u let windows detect ur pc hardware and download the needed drivers
    befor u manually install it.
( i hope u get the idea, and pardon my English)

and sure u can revert back to Win8
i did that already, the Win8 key is embedded in the laptop BIOS i thing
as soon as u install the OS it will be activated automatically (no need to write the key).

    * before u install win7:
    - us key-finding programs to get ur Win8 product key and write it down/e-mail it to ur self just in case
and use more than one programs to make sure.

    - to revert back to Win8 u have to have the same windows version that u have the key for.
in our case (y410p) its a stander windows 8 ( thanks to Jobine he gave me a download link ).
( PM me if u need)

Either use the dust removal feature on Lenovo Energy Management, or use canned compressed air blown into the exhaust on the side. A combination of the two will work the best.

Back to Windows for me :)

Thing that ticks me off with the dust removal feature is that it showcases how poweful the fan truly is if Lenovo didn't BIOS-gimp it. Imagine how cool (and loud!) it would run. Oh well, the Y410p already runs decently cool, but the Y510p SLI would need this feature more than anything else.

Well Lenovo costed themselves a sale with me, funny story to. My ship date was tomorrow, this morning I got the dreaded "up to 30 day delay" email, I've seen on this forum that a few people have received that email more then once from Lenovo on the same order. I have already been waiting almost three weeks and in that time I've come across some more disposable funds I did not think I would have. After some research (A lot on this site) I decided to go with a Sager NP7358, AKA the Clevo W350SS. Right before I ordered I saw it wasn't being released until tomorrow but I said F it I've been waiting this long already, what's a couple more weeks for the laptop that I really want that is a little more future proof. So I preordered one with a ssd, gtx 860m and windows 7.

Here's the funny part, I call Lenovo to tell them never mind, and they say the thing is suppose to ship out today. I kind of laugh and tell the guy about the email I got this morning, and he says, "well, that just means it could be delayed from one to thirty days," I point out that it is actually shipping out on time and he kind of laughs, but we had a good conversation, my cc has not been billed, and he says they shouldn't have a problem stopping the shipment.

Well, there is the fact that the Y410p is already almost a year old... and the Y400 (which is more powerful when SLI'd) is a year and a half old.

i've had mine for 10 months.

At this point theres no reason to buy a Kepler laptop over a Maxwell, especially if gaming is your #1 focus.

Hope you're happy with your purchase. And let's hope the Y40 isn't a huge dissapointment.
