You may be pulling 150w off the wall but remember this. No power supplies are 100% efficient. Even those 80+ platiniums for desktops are only 95%.
Lets just say its 80% efficient, you are only using 120w. -
Your finger vibrates like the surface isn't smooth when ur laptop is plugged in

True. For the sake of discussion let's say I have a great power brick with 90% efficiency (doubtful given how hot mine runs haha). If I pull 130W from the wall while gaming, that means my notebook is actually drawing 117W. While that's still technically below the limit of the small brick, it's still too close for comfort IMO. Plus running a PSU at max load all the time will certainly decrease its lifespan due to the heat as they work best (highest efficiency) at about half to three-quarters load.
The 120W adapter is fine for non-strenuous tasks like productivity, movies, web surfing, etc. It's much smaller size makes it good for carrying around school which is what I use it for, but when I'm gaming and don't need the portability I'm always going with my 170W one.
Maybe I ought to break out my 120W brick and do some stress testing on it LOL. -
Does anyone know of a way to turn up the rpm of the fan?
-
Run Dust Removal in Lenovo Energy Management.
-
so thats a no?
-
Maybe....?
-
LOL! It is a no alright!
But dude, i say again. It's not safe to venture into this messing with fan rpm stuff. Dats what broke my last Acer and fan occasionally stopped working, Idle temps where at 82 DEGREES! 82 DEGREES!!! Lol. -
Sudo apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi
Sudo modprobe iwlwifi
Wifi should work. -
My drivers are up to date as far as the ones on the Lenovo site. It wont let me update to the newest drivers directly from the intel site. Says "System not supported"
I wish I could use NVIDIA with Chrome but for some reason its disabled. -
Why do u need nvidia to work with chrome? 500fps in a flash game?
Stanley08 likes this. -
Unless you need to run GPU computations (highly un-advised on a GeForce) or play Windows (WINE) games there is no need for Nvidia under linux.
If you do need it, you will however need to install bumblebee since the card cannot be accessed directly:
sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia nvidia-current primus
then to use the card you need to use the optirun command to call in the card, such as:
optirun chrome
or
optirun wine skyrim.exe
I'm guessing he wants to play unity/flash/java-applet games with better performance.
An example of a VERY demanding browser game is the HTML5 version of Runescape:

I sound like im speaking rubbish but you'd have to try it yourself. -
Chromecast.
So far with the integrated graphics, its been very choppy. I stream shows from my computer to my tv and this causes Chrome to crash everytime with the same error (Intel graphics quit working) -
u know that runescape has a client right?
i have played that game for years.. -
berrykerry789 Notebook Consultant
It changed so much too! Everything is in hd now and colorful! Only problem is I hate the new combat system. :\ -
LOL Runescape. Remember playing that in the browser 10 years ago.
-
oldschool.runescape.com
Should be just like it was back then.
I still play on and off, yes i do. But there is no HTML5 client (that I know of).

ok, so I got the ssd and the caddy. Should i clone the whole disk or just the windows partition?
-
I still do as well even though I feel like an old person on it. I cant be bothered about leveling though. Still maintain sub-lvl 80 for strength, defence, attack blah blah blah.
-
i have decent stats but this game sucks. I quitted 3 or 4 years ago when it became bad.
-
I've cancelled my membership about a year ago but got 80+ in all my levels before i quit
I can post pics if you want.

Anyone tried to update to Windows 8.1 Update 1. The one that leaked some weeks back.
Here - http://www.ngohq.com/news/24606-windows-8-1-update-1-final.html
My question now is, since they are basically just regular system update files, do you think a system restore would bring you back to Regular Windows 8.1?
-
Just a little fyi guys, I'm selling my GN36 Ultrabay: Lenovo Y500 GN36 Ultrabay 650M | eBay
Since the GN35 is available again I'll be picking one of those up. -
makes no sense to post it here since we are y410p users and sometimes some y510p users come.
A 650m would be of no use to us. -
Well considering the fact that 750M ultrabays aren't always available, someone may want a GN36 to tinker with.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...eries-gpus-650m-750m-755m-might-possible.html -
If anyone wants to try it out, then feel free to. Heck, if you get a GN35 (Y400 650M) to work with a Y410p, i'll give you a cookie
-
grrr......thanks!already wiped my debian installation due to all those trouble...
-
It looks like I am beginning to see some wi-fi problems on my Y410p. I will try it with another router and see what happens.
-
NO?!! NOBODY?!! Only Linux users here?!
-
I am staying away from Windows 8.1. I don't want wahala.

I don't see the point updating right now. It's only a month of wait time, unlike windows 8.1....Better to wait then to risk having to do a complete reinstall/system restore.Stanley08 likes this. -
just heads up - lenovo has an excellent deal on the 5800 battery:

Why do people have to open the back covers to put in the SSD? Why not put the SSD in the ultra bay and then boot in there? Are there any benefits in putting the SSD in the back slot?
-
Then u would have to mess with bios to change boot disc from primary drive to ultrabay.
Removing a few screws is so much easier. -
Yh, I always wanted to ask. Does every Y410p have space for ssd when u unscrew the computer? Instead of using the ultrabay? Because I plan to leave the dvd drive where it is in ultra bay. Got a sweet deal for a 128GB SSD Drive too.
Actually, I used it on my last computer for about 2 weeks. No issues. Windows 8.1 Update is really Awesome. Computer now boots directly into desktop too.

Stanley, I dont think they are talking about the official 8.1 update.
On the other hand: 8.1 or not, I think getting the classic shell:
Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements
Improves windows 8 functionality more than any update every will - at least on non-touchscreen devices.Stanley08 likes this. -
I downloaded that a long time ago, never installed it. Why fix wat isn't broken? And I hate 3rd party apps that mess with system files. They thought me a lesson on Win7. E.g icon packager.
I ASK AGAIN
Every y410p has expansion slot for ssd?

I don't think classic shell messes with any system files.
All y410p should have the m.2 slot for ssds, -
Some have indicated that the connector is missing for the M.2 slot for systems that did not ship with the 24GB SSD. By the way, I tested the 24GB M.2 SSD they shipped against the Samsung EVO 512GB SSD I used to swap out the HDD, and the performance difference was quite dramatic. I posted the results a while back. The Samsung SMOKED the 24GB M.2 card, for both read and write. I am not sure if its the card or the slot, but the SATA III slot used for the main drive if fairly quick, and the Samsung SSD is awesome.
You can always put your SSD in the DVD slot and throw all your games at it, as the system boots pretty quick with the 24GB cache, but if you are planning to install the OS on the SSD, then I don't think it makes sense to have it in a removable slot. You may have connection problems, or if you are hard on your laptop like I am, the lock may come use and make the system flaky or intermittent.
Although being able to swap out different system drives with different OS variants would be an interesting use case for that. -

I remember reading somewhere that all the y410ps have the m.2 slot, and only the y510ps that come from lenovo have the m.2 slot. -
For anybody interested in buying an affordable one. I believe this would work right? And it's affordable too!

To answer a couple of questions:
1.) The y400/410p both have an internal 2.5" HDD/SDD SATA III drive as well as a mSATA/M.2 SSD drive. The ultrabay can accommodate a second 2.5" HDD/SSD drive but it only operates at SATA II speeds.
2.) The M.2 drive in the y410p is 42mm. which can currently support drives up to 128GB. The y400 has an mSATA drive which can support up to 1TB.Stanley08 likes this. -

My temps are going crazy..... I'm reaching 80C CPU and 70 GPU in some games, thing is, some less demanding games heat it up more than mire demanding ones..... Could a bad PC port do that? Like Dark Souls 1? Would it cool it down if I disable turbo boost? And would I lose more than 5fps in some games?
-
i get 85 degrees cpu and 80 degrees gpu max while playing dota 2. It isnt crazy or even too hot. The keyboard is barely warm.
