Any way to make the m.2 ssd the boot drive; I upgraded mine to 128gb. If anyone has a guide that would be amazing. I've been trying multiple methods for weeks to no avail.

I did the conversion where I put the original hard drive that came with the laptop and put it into the universal bay with a hard drive caddy and bought a SSD to put into the original hard drive compant (where I installed windows), but now my laptop does not recognize the drive in the caddy. This happened after my laptop was running and the battery died. But I did a check for disks found under control panel's disk management and nothing was found.

    Any ideas on a fix?

Try taking the hdd out of the caddy, and connecting it to some other computer and see if it shows up. That will at least determine if it's the hdd that's broken or if it's something else.

For those of you considering EVO 840 replacements for your hard drive (like me!), here's some interesting life data based on actual measurement. Key quote for me:

"Counter-intuitively, the TLC-based Samsung 840 Series outlasted those MLC casualties to write over 900TB before failing suddenly. But its reallocated sectors started piling up after just a few hundred terabytes of writes, confirming TLC's more fragile nature. The 840 Series also suffered hundreds of uncorrectable errors split between an initial spate at 300TB and second accumulation near the end of the road."

    Also, from last page:

"The 840 Pro and remaining HyperX are already on their way to 1.6PB. We're committed to killing them both, and we may have to write a lot more data to achieve that goal. Stay tuned for the next chapter."

I'm waiting for Black Friday to pick up a Crucial MX100 512GB SSD. I'd like to see a similar test performed with that drive.

As someone who has an 840 EVO in my desktop for a bit over a year now, I've written 3.05 TB to it so far. Only 300 more years till it wears out lol.
Endurance should be the last concern for desktop class SSDs, likely the flash will last longer than the other components.

I myself have had the 840 EVO 250GB for about a year or so now and have close to the same written amounts. I utilize the SSD for everything except for my movie and music libraries for which I use an external hard drive. For day to day use for most consumers, I think the EVO will be more than sufficient.

Might just be the ribbon cable connector for the monitor going out, opening and closing the lid a lot can wear them out, or it was improperly installed and got kinked. If that is all it is, should be cheap to fix if you are not afraid of replacing it yourself, probably not too expensive at a repair shop either.

Hello I have had the Lenovo Y410p for about a year. Starting about a month ago about 11 or 12 current pending sectors in the hard drive came up. At that point I used the windows backup to image the drive. Starting up the image caused the laptop to BSOD, but after that the current pending sectors were gone, but there were not any sectors that were reported to reallocation. So until last night it was working fine, and now there are 3 current pending sectors. The hard drive in my laptop is the ST1000LM024.
Now I'm wondering if I should warranty it or not as warranty takes time and I need to use the laptop. So I'm thinking I would be better off changing put the hard drive on my own.

Try asking them to just ship a replacement HDD. Dell and HP will do that. You then just ship the dead one back.

    Hi,

    New Y410P owner here.

I just bought a new, open box Lenovo Y410P-59399853 from Amazon, for $765.00. Opening it, everything was still sealed.

I did a lot of looking for a 14" under a $1000, to replace my aging Acer AS4830TG-4650, having looked at the Lenovo Y40, Alienware 13, and the HP Envy 14T. Those were the only three new generation 14" gaming laptops, that I could find just under $1000.

I didn't like the Lenovo Y40, because of the Intel i7-4510U CPU, which is just a Dual Core w/HT, and it is soldered in, allowing no upgrading. It also only comes w/the AMD R9-M275 GPU, which is OK, but I rather have a Nvidia GPU.

I liked the Alienware 13, all except for the soldered in Intel i5-4210U CPU, which I didn't like, but it did have the Nvidia GTX 860M GPU. I did especially like their new Optional Graphics Amplifier, which has a bright future, especially if they come out w/one allowing for multiple video cards, and even storage as well. Plus the Alienware 13 was over $1000, which was over my budget, w/the Graphics Amplifier.

I also didn't like the HP Envy 14T as well, same issue w/the Intel i7-4510U CPU, but it did have a Nvidia GTX 850M. I also didn't like the Touch Pad on it, checking it out at Best Buy, as well as it's casing.

I liked the Y410P because of it's i7-4700MQ, which is socketed, and a quad core w/HT. The GT 755M is not that old, and is still a pretty powerful GPU. Then I also like the case, and the back lite keyboard. The display is OK, being 1600x900, but when using it at home, I have it hooked up to a monitor anyway. From all the criticism of the Y410P, I haven't seen any, but I guess it's just personnel tastes. I would imagine

So far I haven't had any issues w/it. I did upgrade the Windows 8.1 to the Pro version, due to a licence that I had sitting around. I'm no big fan of Windows 8.1, so I will eventually install Windows 7 Ultimate on it.

With that all said, I plan to upgrade the memory to 16 Gb. Has anyone installed 32 GB in it. The CPU supports up to 32, according to it's specs. UPDATE: I just ordered 16 GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3L from Newegg.com.

Can the WiFi card be upgraded? I have a Killer WiFi card lying around. I read that the one installed is tied into the BIOS, and so can't be upgraded.

Finally has anyone utilize the 24 GB SSD as a Boot Cache, using Lenovo's (Diskkeeper) EasyCache for example?

I have good news and bad news:
The good news: the WiFi is upgradable if you flash SVL7's bios. Head to the lenovo forum on tech inferno for more details

The bad: there are only 2 so-dimm slots, so 16gb is the maximum amount of RAM. Also the i7 4700mq is NOT a socketed CPU. It's soldered to the mobo.

Also Lenovo uses Express Cache, which is pre-installed. There's no GUI, but you can run an admin cmd prompt and type "eccmd.exe -info" to view current status of the cache. The ~24gb "D: Lenovo" drive is NOT your ssd, it's a partition on your 1tb HDD. The SSD isn't visible to explorer.

Had the laptop for about a year and a half now, here's a recap of the overall condition of things:

Casing: Minor cosmetic scratches, but that's expected. One of the bottom screws that holds the bottom plate is slightly damaged, but that's my fault because i haven't use the proper screwdriver and chipped it in the process.

Screen: Covered with fingerprints i haven't bothered to clean, but still works. No flickering.

Keyboard: Works, clicky and tactile as always. I actually like it just as much as my MX Blue mechanical.

Trackpad: Has worn out slightly, but still works. No peeling. But the clickpad is less stiff that it was when i originally owned the laptop. I'm using modded drivers.

CPU: Throttles on stock clocks and voltages if used for more than 2 hours. Max temp 89 under stock clocks. -50mV underclock fixes throttling and lowers temps a bit while not affecting stability. However personally i have one core disabled and my CPU's TDP re-rated to 36W. Stays cool and no throttling, despite having 34/33/32x multipliers. Disabling a core hasn't made a noticeable difference in most of the games i play.

GPU: Tops out at 83C, but i've stopped overclocking it.

Fans: Laptop remains whisper quiet on low loads. On high loads, fan is audible but it's not a total jet engine. After the high load is closed, laptop quickly returns to being quiet within 5-10 minutes or so. Props to the fan for not being overly loud like my previous laptops.

Battery: Still holds 3/3:30 hours on light browsing wih 40% brightness. However note that this is with a core disabled, and i use a 48w/h battery.

    SSD: Works.

HDD: It's a bit more audible than when i originally had the laptop (only audible component on low load) but still quiet, and does it's job,

Audio: From what i've noticed, audio quality is MUCH more garbled under Windows than Linux. Still baffled. Tried OneKey and Dolby HT and did nothing.

Aside from this, unit is still in good working condition. Haven't had many issues, and honestly, i haven't babied mine either. It's been brought to college more times than i can count and even tossed around a bit. Still holds great gaming performance.

Wireless: 15.10 drivers still do drop every once in a blue moon. And anything newer seems to double the drop rate. The best drivers are the 14.8 MS ones but they are for Windows 7 and 8.0 only :(

I might need a new WiFi card, preferably with dual-band AC.

The i7-4700MQ is a 946-pin micro-PGA (rPGA946B), which is suppose to be socketed (G3). The CPU's which are listed as BGA, are soldered, which this CPU is not. They are usually listed w/a "U", like i7-4510U for example, in their description.

When it comes to the memory, I was thinking that 16 GB DDR3L SoDimm sticks were available, but I guess not yet.

As for Express Cache, it wasn't installed on my Y410P. I just installed it, and seems to be booting faster now.

IIRC, the cpu is socketed, while the gpu is soldered. Also, I assume upgrading the y410p bios with the newer one on lenovo's website should allow you in theory to swap the N2230 with the better wireless cards offered on the newer y410p's.

Oddly enough, my wireless card (N2230) has been almost flawless and I'm getting almost no problems with it with the newest drivers from intel.

I haven't had any problems with linux on the laptop after getting the the popping speakers on shutdown issue sorted out, though I find the laptop to be slightly hotter compared to windows 8.1. Trackpad is also slightly worse on linux and I haven't had the time/patience to 100% configure it to my liking.

The sound being crisper on linux compared to windows... I find it to be pretty amusing considering it's supposed to be better on the windows side due to the Dolby enhancements.

My main complaints are the awful screen and battery life. Otherwise, I'm pretty satisfied with how my laptops been performing and aging.

I'm running the modded BIOS, i can use whatever wireless card i want :)

BTW what trick did you use to mute the popping? I just have it so it unloads the kernel module before shutdown, but i know thats not a proper fix.

Do you have low battery life under windows or linux? Because most distros seem to run the cpu at a full blown 3.4GHz when youre on the battery, draining it in about an hour, whereas windows still gives me decent runtimes.

ah... the audio was an easier fix than I thought. All I had to to was add "options snd-hda-intel model=,generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (note the comma). Seems that the driver is just detecting the wrong sound card or something. Starting the laptop up with headphones in still creates a pop so I probably missed something. I'll get to that whenever I have time since it doesn't really matter for me. :)
Also disabling auto-mute in alsamixer fixed the weird sound when backlit was on 50% brightness and the static sound when plugging/unplugging headphones.

I have lower battery life under linux, though I'm not sure what's draining it. The Arch wiki said that cpu frequency scaling was turned on by default since the 3.4 kernel so I haven't actually checked on the cpu frequency yet. I get about 20%~30% battery with linux so it's not that bad. I'm using tlp for power management btw.

Unplug your battery and type lscpu and check to make sure it's running at 800mhz instead of whatever max your frequency is.

I just installed i7z and I'm using it to check the frequency. It looks like cpu frequency scaling is turned on, though it doesn't seem to be as effective as the one windows has.

One issue that I am having w/my Y410P is in getting the GeForce GT 755M GPU to be my primary video. It appears to want to use the Intel 4600.

I've manually set it in the Nvidia Control Panel, under the Preferred Graphics Processor, but no luck.

I've tried both the Nvidia driver which came w/the laptop, the one on Lenovo's download site, as well as Nvidia themselves, w/their very latest one.

Am I the only one w/this issue, or is there a solution?

I also own an Acer 4830TG-6450 w/a GeForce GT 540M, w/Optimus also, which works just fine. Of course I am running Windows 7 on it, so I don't know if that makes a difference, vs. the Windows 8.1 on the Y410P.

What do you mean by primary video? Normally the Nvidia card only kicks in when you load a 3d program. You should be able to right click any app and choose to run it via the Nvidia card from the context menu.

In the Nvidia Control Panel, you can set the Preferred Graphics Processor, to the "Auto Select", High Performance Nvidia Processor, or the "Integrated Graphics"

While what you say is true if you set it to the Auto Select, but w/the High Performance Nvidia Processor, the Nvidia Graphics should work all the time.

It works on my other laptop that I have, but doesn't w/this one. That laptop have the Nvidia 540M GPU, which is also a Optimus GPU.

I've removed, and reloaded the drivers a least three times already, installing the Nvidia first, using the provided drivers, the latest Lenova ones from their website, as well as Nvidia 's latest.

Why do you think that is true? It is not. That setting controls what device is used for 3d, has nothing to do with 2d. The way Optimus works is to intercept calls to DX/DXVA/CUDA and reroute them to the Nvidia GPU to render, then copy the frame buffer to the Intel IGP for display using the Optimus Copy Engine. At no point is the Nvidia GPU outputting directly to the framebuffer, thus there is no way to have it on all the time.

Hello, I was wondering if any of my fellow Y410P users could help me with a problem.

About last month, my Nvidia Geforce Card stopped working (The Dedicated GPU). I only play light gaming (League of Legends) and it worked fine the night before then all of a sudden it stopped working the next day.

When I tried to uninstall/reinstall Geforce Experience, the computer gave off a bunch of blue screens and now when I go to Device Manager it shows the Nvidia Geforce card but it has a yellow triangle next to it.

I tried factory reset, uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, rolling back drivers and nothing seems to work. I may be wrong onthis, but I don't think it's a hardware issue to be honest.

Some links I've found the internet have people complaining about the exact same problem. After like 4 or 5 reinstall/uninstall drivers, it did recognize it but then after restarting the computer it stopped recognizing it...

Laptop not using Dedicated GPU [Solved] - Nvidia - Graphics & Displays

I currently don't live in the US, so sending it to them for a warranty repair is sort of difficult on my end so if anyone has a solution for me, would really be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Does anyone know how to disable ExpressCache? I recently started using an ssd for my main drive, but I can't figure out how to disable the cache drive and use it as a normal drive. I'm also not sure if this will affect IRST, and I don't really know if it is really helping speedup some stuff.

Another thing, can anyone provide me the link for the OEM ISO? I'm afraid of formatting the 1tb drive since the recovery partitions are there and I don't have any way to reinstall my OS except for using the recovery. I saw a post from Jobine saying he has the link but I can't seem to find the page to send PMs. :(

Uninstall expresscache in control panel, then format the ssd using windows disk manager.

murphy78's Windows 8.1 / Server 2012r2 with Update MSDN iso files
Extract your current windows 8 key just to be safe. If the key embedded in your laptop is a windows 8.1, the installer should be able to detect the key. If it's a windows 8 key, you'll have to use a generic windows 8.1 (google it) for the installer, then type in the windows 8 key you extracted manually into the activation thing after installing.

Thanks! So the IRST thing doesn't really have anything to do with ExpressCache?

I don't recall anything about IRST, but expresscache is a standalone program.

As in you loaded the restore/backup image to revert the laptop to the factory supplied software? If that didn't work I'd say 99% chance you have a hardware problem. Personally I'd load a fresh copy of Windows on the machine load the drivers and see what happens, if it's still screwey after that you definetly have a hardware problem.

    Hi guys,

Is this the latest forum for anything y410p or do you guys know of others? I am a proud owner of the y410p no problems and i am constantly on the search for tweaking and making sure i've got the best performance out of this machine. I installed a SSD samsung 840 Evo and 16 gig ram..

I haven't done anything regarding the cpu throttling or ?? should I look into that??

i have set the advanced power settings to max cpu 99%..

I'm basically looking for all the awesome tweaks to make this machine run games and software at its' full potential..

and i dont care about loud fan noise either..

    thanks.

Your machine should run nicely out of the box, though i recommend you update all your drivers to their latest version. Stuff like CPU tweaking is completely personal preference.
