Nice read. I can relate to this directly with my aw15 r4 with 1070. Needing the smaller form factor because owning laptops closer in size to the aw13 r3 which I owned is much more preferable.
I too will be going 2070. But I’m very keen to see you compare and bench mark the 2060 model. Maybe you could do those graphs and with the same games you tried and do an FPS comparison on same settings.
Maybe you could do a stock temperatures as well as undervolt. It’d be useful because you could see exactly how much better off it is for those that dont do it.

Im being really hesitant on this purchase. I wanna get it now but at the same time the 76whr battery and 500nit HDR is coming out but no date yet. Do you think it's worth waiting for those "upgrades" or getting what config options we have now?
-
Depends; are you going to be away from a plug a lot? Then yes it might be good. At the same time though the increased battery will limit your storage options as it will remove the 2.5" bay. I'm sure the new screen will be gorgeous but I'm also content with mine.

HDR is overrated and 500nits is brighter than what will be comfortable for many. My main monitor is 400nits and I have the brightness turned down to 50% otherwise it hurts to look at.
If you’re in direct sunlight then 500nit is more than enough.
I have seen plenty of content on some amazing OLED TVs with HDR on the Xbox One X and in my opinion, that’s about as good as it gets. I still wouldn’t consider it mind blowing. OLED by itself is more mind blowing then HDR alone.
I’m sure more people here will disagree because this is an enthusiast forum.
I’m hopeful it they release a larger battery it’ll directly fit into both 30 and 40 series just by removal of the 2.5”Kalen likes this. -
Thank you guys. Also, do you know if 1tb-2tb nvme or SSD is compatible with the y740?
-
It actually comes with a NVMe SSD in the m.2 slot already. The 2.5" will obviously be SATA.

I was planning on upgrading the nvme to at least 1tb.

Hi Kalen! could you maybe post some quick first impressions when you test the RTX2070 Max-Q?
Today there is 12% FLASH SALE in Lenovo!
Would be nice to know if it does worth to go for the RTX2070 or the RTX2060!
Many thanks!! -
I actually did a full review on my website if you wanna check it out:

Yes i already read it! nice review!!
Im sorry, I meant if you could post your first impressions/comparison before writting a full review when you receive the RTX2060
(the flash sale ends in 23h)

So it seems from preliminary testing that the 2060 more matches the 1070 Max-Q than the 1070...in benchmarks. In gaming its a whole other story. Seeing the same if not better than the 2070 Max-Q. The overclock headroom is the exact same as the 2070 Max-Q (+100core+350mem) and anything beyond that crashes. So far only tried PUBG on ultra but was averaging 90 fps and 38 as low. I'll get more later.

So I’m enjoying my rtx 2060 model for almost 6 days now and so far it’s been awesome. My question is that would you run the GPU overclocked while gaming all the time for just for benchmarks sake?
-
You meant the 2070 Max-Q right? it seems interesting! I will wait for your results in order to make a final decision! Many thanks again!
The RTX2070 Max-Q costs 200€ more than the RTX2060, and checking the results it doesnt seems to be worth it...but the question is if in the future with new drivers there will be a better/higher difference of performance...+ the 2GB VRAM extra that could help me in some 3D-work (Autocad, Revit, 3DS Max, etc) -
Hmm Apex Legends runs much better on the 2070 Max-Q. I'm seeing worse gaming performance than the even the 1070. Averaging 89 fps with 62 as 1% low. That's a far cry from the 122 fps with the 2070 Max-Q.
Sent from my LM-G710 using Tapatalk -
Are the thermals any better on the 2070 max Q
-
Yes they are. Not a huge difference but yes. And uninstalling the Killer software made a difference. Forgot about doing that before. Apex Legends is back to beyond 1070 settings.
Sent from my LM-G710 using TapatalkB0B likes this. -
Oh trust me that’s the first thing I did was uninstall that crap lol. How much of a difference we speaking of here?
-
So far it seems right in the middle of the 1070 and 2070 Max-Q.

Sorry for the delay guys: https://gamerdad.ca/reviews/rtx-2060-vs-rtx-2070-max-q/
There's about as much as I can do tonight; hope it helps! Short version: very little difference/if at all. -
Another great write up Kalen, your benchmarks are pretty revealing.
It just shows how good both GPU’s are, I would love to see the RTX 2080MQ in the 15” model.Kalen likes this. -
Many thanks Kalen! very useful review! so you confirm the poor price/performance of the RTX2070 Max-Q...so just for gaming, I would say it does not worth to pay 200€ more for it...is going for the 17" instead the 15" a reason to choose the RTX2070Max-Q instead the RTX2060?
My last question about this would be: do you know if the 2070Max-Q with +2GB VRAM, +CUDAS, etc. will/can perform better in 3D-work/Rendering software (3DS-Max, Vray) that the 2060? or should it be similar like in gaming? and is the Ray Tracing rendering useful (for rendering in real time instead of CPU rendering), or is it still not powerful enough?
Many thanks!

Good stuff. You k quite shocked that you he 2070 lost in some games. Maybe only above 1080p does the real difference begin to show.
Could you do me one favour if you don’t mind. Thinking to take advantage of the flash sale. Could you run the dx12 benchmark by running timespy for both.
It could be a bit beneficial. Some people like more FPS and will pick dx11. But sometimes I like better visuals and will pick dx12. This will give me an indicator of how well the 2 GPUs are, because right now I’m shocked it’s this close.

Good job Kalen! 2060 seems the best way to og.

Has anyone done a side by side of the 15inch vs the 17inch. I already have a 15" RTX2070mq on order but now with this flash sale the 17inch RTX2080mq is within my budget..... Considering I travel a lot and will be using this as video editing on the move and of course gaming I really want to know if the 17inch will just be TOO big and if the performance increase is worth it?
I have been using X1 carbons for business for the past 5 years so no matter what it's going to be an adjustment... -
Alright did a quick Timespy test on both this morning. 2070 Max-Q pulled a 6391 while the 2060 pulled a 6190. Not a huge difference but still you would think it would be higher than 3.25%.
Makes sense though given the framerates I was getting. It really does seem like, right now, they are pretty well even. Perhaps when new drivers come there will be better optimization of the Max-Q cards to eak out a bit more but so far? Not really worth the price upgrade.

Thanks. Is this the overall score or graphics score. Sounds. Because the 2070 is supposed to be hitting the 6700 mark and 2060 around 5800 mark.
Also on a side note. Is it worth waiting on 9th gen 9750H? rumours has it. It’s 2.4ghz faster (base clock 2.6ghz, each core 400mhz faster).
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
That is the overall score. Graphics score for the 2070 Max-Q is 6312 and graphics score for the 2060 is 6091. Perhaps I will try again on the 2070 Max-Q because that definitely seems lower than it should be.

What do you think about these benchmarks?
https://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GL73-8SE-i7-8750H-RTX-2060-Laptop-Review.403811.0.html
RTX2070 Max-Q seems to be 10-20% faster in PCMark10, 3DMark and gaming (RB +25%) than the RTX2060, both with i7-8750H. I think that first Aero with bad results due to heat problems has caused very bad marketing to the RTX2070 Max-Q.. -
What about the TDP? I’m more worried about the thermals. If they run hotter than the current gen could be problematic.
I feel CPU bottleneck is still less likely than GPU bottleneck.
Separate question, can the 1TB hdd be replaced with an SSD? I fee like the second storage is almost needed given there is only one M.2 slot. -
Yes it can, it comes with a cable in the box
-
If I get the 17” with the maxQ 2080, am i stuck with just one hard drive slot or is there a way to add a second SSD in the future?
-
Yes I’m aware of heat. But usually when hot they down click to around base level. The 9750H will down click too but at a 2.4ghz hence why I referred to it’s base click since it’s turbo that usually overheats the cpu (and bad cooling).
That difference should deco help bottleneck.
As for the hhd, yes it can. I have always planned for issues like this in case ideal laptops don’t come with a 2.5 slot with a 2tb NVMe drive. Be handy if the bigger battery option forces the omission of the hhd.

Quick question: is it possible to OC the RTX2070 Max-Q (as it has better thermals), so that it can perform better than the RTX2060? man cannot decide between these two...are the raytracing capabilities of the RTX2060 useful at all for 3D renderings or gaming? or just marketing?
Reddit user: "My Lenovo legion y740 ships with 2070 max Q, a OC of 100mhz gives a time spy score of 7250, non OC gives 6800. How the hell would a laptop 2060 matches this score?" -
German shoop.de adds another 6% cash back, in total you end up at almost 18% off.
--> i5, 2060, no os for 1300 eur is a steal.victorgm likes this. -
Yeah good point regarding the CPU. I guess wait and see when we get them. 2 TB NVMe would certainly solve the issue that there is only one M.2 slot if the bigger battery comes and takes over the HDD slot. Only problem is the price of a 2 TB NVMe isnt cheap here in Canada...
-
Where are people seeing the flash sale?
-
German online shop
-
I’m guessing Europe then cos ones saying Germany. I’m in the uk. Australia had one (I was been nosey lol) and I’m sure North America had one already.

Rendering softwares are just beginning to start supporting RTX features that make use of the RT cores. It will improve over time for sure, but you should check out the forums for the respective suites to check on the progress. The 2070 has 6 more RT cores (30 vs 36) which should make a noticeable difference. RTX is kind of a godsend for us 3d modelers because once softwares become optimized to suit the cards, it'll only get better. RT cores perform raytracing equations much more efficiently and quickly because they are specialized cores that is what makes up the value proposition for RTX cards outside of gaming.victorgm likes this.

Flash sale on 740's all around the world except from Scandinavia! I really don't get it! They don't even offer student discount on 740's!
-
Has anyone switched to this from a Thinkpad? What's the build quality difference like? I've only ever had macs and thinkpads so I'm leery of anything else.
I'm looking at either this or the X1 extreme, with the wider gamur screen (cant afford 4K) and better GPU on the Legion tempting me away from the thinkpad. Potential build quality issues are the only thing holding me back... -
If you're
I had the X1 Carbon Extreme and sent it back to try out the Legion. The Extreme is nice, the GPU (1050ti) is decent but not the most powerful. Main thing I noticed was the fans going crazy whenever I did anything strenuous.
With free returns I recommend buying the Y740 and if you don't like the keyboard then send it back? Hopefully with time they will put the 2060 or 2070mq into the X1 Carbon Extreme but I haven't seen any info or leaks on this, yet. -
I’m considering buying this laptop (17” 2080MQ) but have 2 main concerns -
1. Backlight bleed
2. This seems to be the most crippled 2080MQ, barely ahead of the 2070MQ of other laptops.
Are these valid concerns? I love the idea of a laptop that doesn’t get hot or have super loud fans. The other laptop I’m considering is the Clevo PB71EF-G which has a full 2070 and also is gsync, for around the same price or possibly $100 cheaper. -
Yes, they are valid concerns. Question is: what do you need? If you need more performance (or just want the best value for the performance you get) then the Clevo PB71EF-G will probably be the best solution.scarletfever likes this.

Okay so I ran Timespy again with very light OC (+50 core, +150mem) and got a much better result:
-
Nice Kalen! how much did you got without OC? have you tried the same OC with the RTX2060?
-
Ya without the overclock I got only 6391 which is definitely a bit low. This system seems to perform much better with an OC.
Sent from my LM-G710 using Tapatalkvictorgm likes this. -
Thanks for the answer Kalen, good to know! quick question about OCing: could NVIDIA through future drivers change the clock speed or similar (like the OC does), if they see that they´re not selling many cards due to the bad general opinion of them? or drivers just do "fine tuning"?
-
I have the 2070mq one and had around 6400. But if you run it again with fan setting at max (press ctrl+shift+1 or fn+q) you will have a higher score. I had 6800 without oc but max fan.
Right side my old MSI GT72
