Looks like the 4600u is up on the US Lenovo site for a 110 dollar premium.

Just got my TP Yoga, it's the i7 model from Fry's (no digitizer).

Trackpoint opinions from someone who was terrified of losing the dedicated buttons:
-The clicking action of the trackpad is fine. The noise is the same volume as my X61T (though higher pitched) and the force is similar as well. No problems there.
-It's a little weird feeling, but I think I'll get used to it.
-The nipple is now farther away from the buttons, this wouldn't be a big problem, except that there is a "dead" area at the top of the clickpad, which tends to be where my fingers sit while using the trackpoint one handed. On this deadzone you can easily press the clickpad down, but because your finger isn't on the sensor part, it assumes you want a left click. I've been making left clicks instead of right clicks by accident all day.
-There is no option in the driver to change middle button behaviour! It defaults to scroll, which means I can't use middle click to open/close tabs!
-Uninstalling the Synaptic driver to obtain middle click isn't possible, the trackpad in this case is way too sensitive to be able to use the trackpoint properly, and there is no option in BIOS to disable the trackpad.

So the new trackpoint has been very frustrating, but for different reasons than I thought. If anyone has any ideas to fix this, I'd love to hear them.

I am still learning to live with the TrackPoint left and right button. I still prefer the physical buttons of older TrackPoints.

I'm pretty interested in that aswell. It's available since like a week in several countries now, and we still didn't hear from anyone outside of the UK.

Hi folks. I'm after a little advice.
I've just joined after watching and reading this thread with great interest. I'm not the most advance computer guy but can get by and I'm about to buy my 1st laptop for business purposes where I've done a lot of research for my needs and now know what I need, processor etc.. I had already decided in the TPY as I wanted something well built, still slightly slim and practical however upon reading things about the digitizer and pen I'm beginning to think this maybe useful for me too as I will be visiting clients at either home or work or they visit me where documents will require signing. I'm thinking longer term this will save me in printing costs and save me carrying extra paperwork. However not knowing a great deal about this part ie, digitizer. Will I need the documents that require signing to have been created in specific software for this or can they just be word docs or PDFs?

    Cheers :)

    Hey everyone.

Thanks for all the valuable posts so far. I am expecting to order a TPY sometime soon, and am in the uk, but wanted to know if someone could help me out. I see that the US site now has both of the following CPUs, whilst the UK still only has the first. What impact would having the second have, compared to the first? I went hunting for some answers, although not too hard, but didn't come up with any real-world comparisons, so am unsure why I might wait for the second one to become available, vs just buying the first immediately.

Thanks for any help that you can give.

What are you going to use the TPY for? I don't not think you'll notice any difference in real world use. Comparison here:

The difference is going to be pretty subtle. I opted for the 4600U to add some longevity and help me with some computationally intensive software for school.

Ordered mine today, ships on next Tuesday and crossing my fingers the digitizer issue doesn't manifest itself.

Now I get to watch ads this coming weekend for a 256GB SSD. Putting the 128GB in my desktop.

Trying to decide between this and yoga 2 pro.. hard choice since you can get a better value with yoga 2 pro, 1079 for i5 256gb and 8gb. Can anyone one comment on the build quality of the TPY vs Y2P? Thanks!

I have had no further response from Lenovo anyway and so it will be refund and reorder

Just got to be patient on awaiting for the 4600's now. If the US/CA sites are any indication, they can't be far away now!

hi guys, im a comp sci student and want this notebook for class notetaking( digitizer is a must), some coding ect. Here in ireland there is big diference with price the core i3 and i5 as the the core i5 only is only cofigured with 8gb of ram. I know that the i3 has no turbo boost. Would i see a huge performance diference with the i3 and the i5 in real world usage or am I better off steching my small budget to the i5
    Thanks

I decided against the Yoga2Pro because it only has this flimsy MICRO-HDMI. Thats nothing if you often like to connect the Notebook to a bigger screen - brakes far to easy.
The Thinkpad Yoga has at least a mini-HDMI and the possibility to connect it via OneLink Dock or OneLink PRO Dock.

Although the Yoga2Pro display has a high ppi value, text doesn't look realy sharp.
And of cause there is the Digitizer at the Thinkpad Yoga.

On the topic if the OneLink Pro dock, I tried to get info on its availability from US chat session, and they were at best misleading, at worst entirely wrong. The long and the short was that I got NO date. Anyone have a feeling for when that will hit the streets, and expected cost?

    Hi,

I registered just for this thread, as I have some unfortunate news.

I just received my Thinkpad Yoga today (danish version, i7, digitizer) and the "black hole" in the top right corner also seems to be plaguing my model. So, it seems like it is not isolated to the UK models.

I'll be returning mine for a replacement, and hoping that this is an isolated incident. Will keep you updated, and i apologize for being the bearer of bad news.

    Regards

Purchasing location and manufacturing date can help narrow down the problem. I am not sure where the manufacturing date would be located though.

    Hi Mysri,
thanks for the info - I'm based in Sweden - and I can imagine that if there is an issue with the Danish models then the Swedish ones are likely affected too. I spoke with a local computer supplier about Lenovo - and the thinkpad yoga black hole issue - his advice was to wait it out. He said that previously for other models - Lenovo have used parts suppliers that have quality issues and supply faulty parts for certain markets - and it takes time for them to address the issues found. My guess is that whoever is supplying the digitizer for the European models has some quality issues they need to address.

I suspect, and would love more information to prove or disprove it, that an initial batch of identical i7 digitizer models with a fixed specification was distributed to resellers in the UK and/or Europe on first release, with I think all of the afflicted examples so far being from this group (the UK code is 20CD0038UK).

Lenovo themselves haven't yet shipped any directly, with those of us in the UK/Europe who have ordered from Lenovo still awaiting ship dates (website still says 1-2 weeks). Similarly, there are no resellers with stock of any digitizer models other than the one above. It is when any of these others start landing (I've gone for an i5 with a non-default spec) that we can see how widespread the problem is, or whether it was restricted to a limited batch of the earliest production units.

Come to think of it, the only post I have seen from someone without this problem is lead_org (#559 in this thread), who was using a pre-production review unit.

No, I ordered it from a danish reseller. My guess is that they all get their supply from the same place, so I don't feel that it's fair to name which one.

    *Edit*
In response to arpsh (above), the model number of my Yoga is 20CD0038MD. This is the model that is generally being sold by danish resellers.

Yup, that fits the pattern of 20CD0038XX, where XX is the country code. Other than the base model i3, this is the only model number thus far available in the UK too. In the EU at least, I would imagine the only difference is which power cable they put in the box and could quite reasonably be from the same production batch/shipment.

I ordered a model from the French Lenovo store, and the reference is 20CDCTO1WW (i5, digitizer). CTO means Custom To Order, probably because it's a i5 + 8gb model. I don't have a delivery date yet. But otherwise you are right: the i7 model available at French retailers is 20CD0038FR

Got my Thinkpad Yoga (20CD0038MN) i7 8GB 256SSD a few days ago. (from a reseller in Norway)

I must say I'm really impressed with this PC.

It's almost completly quiet, and just the right size!

I too have the digitizer problem, but I'm not sending it back. I like the Yoga too much..

I also have an external Wacom pen tablet and I can say the external pen tablet has much better pressure sensitivity then the Yoga screen.

The error with the digitizer does not affect finger touch.

I think Lenovo at least should send us a free Lenovo docking station :)

As far as I remember, all of the release models people have gotten their hands on have had the digitizer problem.

I think the general hope is that this issue only affects this very early batch and will be corrected with time. Hopefully by the time Lenovo starts shipping custom units from it's own store, anyways :)

The only person to say that they did not have digitizer problems was using a pre-production unit. Everyone with the digitizer problem has been located in Europe, which may indicate an isolated incident. I've still got my fingers crossed that it was one bad batch. The people who ordered in in the US should start receiving them by the beginning of next week so we'll get more results then.

Snap. I've got the exact same model number on order from the UK Lenovo store (i5, 8GB, 256 SSD, Digitizer, AC wifi). I similarly don't have a delivery date yet, but will obviously be checking the digitizer as soon as it turns up, and posting my findings here. Fingers crossed the custom ones are from a different batch without this problem, otherwise it is going straight back!

Exactly. That'd be a shame - a 1500€ laptop with something like this is pretty unacceptable. Pretty sad, I know, things like that can happen, but I'd be pretty disappointed. Kind of like the burden of the one who orders in the first month after release.

Hey guys. I've been getting up to speed since I took a break from this thread last week. Interesting to see that we now suspect the digitizer black hole problem may potentially be isolated to Europe. It also appears that we're all waiting with bated breath to hear a report on the digitizer from somebody outside of Europe.

So, forgive me for asking, but what happens if it turns out all the TP Yoga's all over the world have the digitizer problem? Do we siege Lenovo headquarters, return our units en masse, or even perhaps just live with the black hole? If it turns out the problem is worldwide, how likely are we to see Lenovo roll out some sort of a software fix or maybe even issue a hardware recall?

Looking to hear from some of the guys who have been ThinkPad/Lenovo/other notebook brand fans from a while and have seen a couple product launches with such issues. I'm new to this game.

I'm betting that the Euro batch is affected only due to it's early appearance.

Delays! - stage two patience extractor. My top speced i7 was supposed to ship on thanksgiving but now the date has been pushed back to 12/1 with arrival somewhere around 12/8 ( US homeboy talking)

Mines got pushed back to shipping 12/08 so arrival is 12/15 (PST) :\

At this point, I'm not really bothering with times anymore. As long as I get it before the next quarter of school starts in January and there is no digitizer "black hole" issue, then I'd be happy.

When Lenovo was getting complaints left and right about the Yoga 2 Pro's yellow and various other problems immediately upon release, they put out a fix two weeks or so later. I don't think they'll just ignore this issue if this is a worldwide thing. It's just a matter of how easy it is to fix and how long it will take to do it.
