This would be great. The older code that was posted in this thread before isn't working anymore.

I went to order my TPY yesterday, in the hope of getting a reasonable deal, but came away frustrated and disappointed.

I'm in the UK. The contracted-out guys who Lenovo use for their sales line seem desperately poorly informed, and are entirely dependent on the same ordering system as is provided by the on-line public offering. They claimed quite specifically that Lenovo would not be offering any other CPU choices than are currently available, which is nonsense, and when I pushed more and more, a manager was consulted and the claim was that new announcements might be made early Jan. I came away thinking that that date may simply have been made up to appease me, but that's probably just me being skeptical. They knew nothing about the announcement if the OneLink Pro. And because Lenovo have dismally failed to get consist warranty extensions working on the UK website, I couldn't even order an extended warranty with the machine. I was told that they normally honour any discount you got buying the machine if you buy the warranty after receiving the unit, but they indicated this was not guaranteed. And finally, I was offered a discount of 10%, which apparently I wasn't actually entitled to because I hadn't specified any additional accessories.

I got to the end of the above and felt so little confidence in the whole shebang, notwithstanding any pending black hole issues, that I decided not to buy. Considering I went into the call motivated to buy, with funds available, I feel that the sale line should be commended for their ability to NOT get sales.

as long as it works, does it really matter?

    =============

Tested on my friend's affected unit. The problem with the digitiser blackhole is resolved, as the accuracy of the digitiser has improved especially around the corners and edges of the screen.

Sensible point. If they had done this before launch, we'd never have know different. But I agree that it would seem as though hardware design is to blame.

    Great news. Thanks for posting.

Don't know. Here a owner reports still faint hints of the black hole

Re: Thinkpad Yoga - Digitiser has inaccurate area - Page 4 - Lenovo Community

You say it is ok. So if it is a software fix of a hardware problem (maybe slight dislocation of component in display from object to object in mm range) than the quality of the fix may vary. For me it looks accurate enough and if it works for every OS and software I'm fine (also I expect better engineering for this price, esp. from a Thinkpad). But Photoshop Artists editing some pixels might might be worried about this... I still want to know what causes this black hole, maybe it is a hardware part creating a disturbing field which strength will decline/rise over the months of use for whatever reason (at least displays loose brightness over time)...

I just applied the fix, re-calibrated the pen input and ran my test again. I think the result speaks for itself :) Props to Lenovo for acting so quickly!

Lenovo most likely won't tell you why this occurred. They have been pretty fast with this firmware update, problem identification to problem resolution within 2 weeks, so you have to give them credit for that.

It matters if it's not a firmware fix but a driver/software fix (application of transformation to deblackhole the blackhole using CPU). It would mean that you'll still have this problem under linux and after reinstallation of Windows.

If it is truly a firmware fix (a bitcode uploaded into wacom chip), then it's fine by me.

I didn't. No confirmation from Lenovo people or users that it's not a driver/software fix. Just lead_org providing definiton of a firmwire update. I know what a firmwire update is.

Now I'm hoping that waiting for the firmware update is the reason why my order was delayed.

Chances are it isn't and I get to cross my fingers it doesn't get delayed further. If it does I need to change my shipping address.

I picked up the 'thinkpad' variant of the yoga because I like the form factor but no longer buy laptops without the trackpoint.

Also because the high resolution screen on the ideapad - while tasty - would be of little value to me. Most of my work is done in various consoles and/or via remote desktop, where the barkinly high resolution screens are at best a hindrance - but the x220 screen is lower resolution than would be helpful much of the time.

Indeed, for a lot of what I do, even 1920 x 1080 is overkill. I found myself preferring either 1600 x 900 or even 1280 x 800 on this screen, and yesterday started looking into ways to get the full width of the screen illuminated while using sub-900 pixel count resolution.

I found a great setting in the registry controlling the graphics:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\Display\igfxcui\CustomResolutions

Set that value to 1 (default is zero) and in the intel graphics options a new choice appears under "graphics options" - custom resolutions.

I'm finding that both 1440 x 810 and 1504 x 846 work nicely for me. I use the 60hz setting with each, and 1600 x 900 was a bit too small to read the console in one of the VM environments I'm often in.

The device as a whole is disappointing for two main reasons.

First, it's an ideapad, not a thinkpad. No good way to default the function keys to be function keys even through a reboot? Perhaps a bios update will remedy that. The build quality is not good. I noticed last night that the righthand side of the screen bezel was rougher than the lefthand side. Closer inspection shows that the bezel is separating just a bit in the two weeks I've been using it. There's a small gap along the right bezel, detectable with a fingertip. It's obvious that the display is not going to hold up for 2-3 years if after 2 weeks the act of opening it is already leading to wear.

The second issue isn't Lenovo's fault, it's Windows 8, which is still, a year on, not much of a touch operating system and not well integrated.

I did find that I was able to resize the OS drive, add a new partition, and install Windows 7 pro there (I did so by copying a win 7 dvd's contents to the win 8 drive and installing from within the Windows GUI, and now have a dual boot system.) Windows 7 does quite a bit of what I want to do better than Win 8 does, and those things I was hoping to actually enjoy in Win 8 are so poorly implemented there that I use them rarely. (An example is Flipboard.)

Screen auto rotation doesn't work in Win 7 (the sensors used to do this in Win 8 have no Win 7 drivers) but it's pretty easy to set up a couple of flick gestures to do a one finger flip by sending the ctrl-alt-arrow combinations. Everything else is available, though.

Has anyone had any luck with putting antiglare protection on these displays?

Choose a model, customize it and add it to cart. You can then select additional warranty options.

I'm glad they have the digitizer issue worked out. The are still a couple of things keeping me from pulling the trigger on the TPY, though. I'll drop them here but will likely follow up with sales on Monday.

Why no Win 8.1 PRO option, especially given that it a) used to be an option, and b) it's a Thinkpad? And when will it be available?

Why is the only option for pointing device "ClickPad without NFC antenna & module"? Is it (or will it be) possible to get the TPY with this?

Is the SD card slot SDHC or SDXC? Also, is it capable of SDIO?

Is the Bluetooth 4.0 or 4.0LE?

Sorry but honestly, build quality aside. You lose all credibility trying to say that Windows 8 isn't a touch OS. Its entire design was touch focussed and having used it purely on a tablet for the past year I would say your talking crap.

Windows 7 in terms of touch is a joke especially in comparison to Windows 8. I have no issue with people preferring 7 over 8 due to inability to leave the start menu ect. (Which can be sorted very easily in 8) but to say it fails at touch is just stupid.

Its just as touch friendly as iOS (More so in my oppinion) and Android mate.

P.s. Programs don't run better in Windows 7 then 8, as 8 uses Windows 7 as a base, meaning it is extremely similar with regards to how Programs run ect.

It was already confirmed by Lenovo that its similar to a BIOS update for the machine meaning its not a driver fix. Also Wacom tablets like everything else that has interaction requires calibration, it is very possible that the initial firmware just had calibration issues hence the black hole. This new firmware file clearly has the correct calibration values for the TPY meaning that its just a matter of a few binary digits being different ect. So the issue was never really hardware, otherwise lead_org wouldn't get a perfect result after installing the patch and recalibrating his pen ect..

The ONLY reason to get Pro is for Domain support and BitLocker support. Two things alot of people don't need on a personal laptop. Sure if it was a work laptop I understand, but I imagine a lot of people are going to buy this and use it as a personal laptop meaning this stuff is an unnecessary thing, especially as an almost £70 quid extra!

That's fair point. But it's cheaper to still go for Windows 8.1 and upgrade to Pro by buying the upgrade elsewhere for £49.99.

I'm not saying I know anything about what lenovo did for the digitizer, but to answer your question:

A hardware problem in this case could be solved by software because you can remap the area of the screen that has a bubble using software so that when you write on it, the hardware would be reporting the wrong area, but since lenovo knows where the wrong area is, it could warp the input from the digitizer via software/driver to make it report the values to the drawing program that more closely match with what the user should expect. Remember that user experience is a combination of both hardware and software. and almost all hardware needs the software portion to function. Its kindof like when you turn your mouse sensitivity way up.. you didn't move your mouse any faster than before, but suddenly it zooms off the side of the screen.... nothing changed but the software in this case.

For example, if you place the pen position at (x,y) in the black hole area, the software intercepts, compensates and corrects it to (x + 1,2, y + 3.25). It knows where the error location is and can just fake it. I just hope this is not the case, since it's an expensive device.

Hello, i plan to buy a thinkpad yoga
I will use it for playing and training chess (chessbase, deep fritz and houdini).

I wonder if there is a lot of differences between the i5 and i7.
It seems that the better the processor is the better the chess engine is.

Could you tell me if the i7 worth it.

    Thanks

Which I regain by my facility with punctuation. :)

Let's go back to what I wrote, which is "not much of a touch operating system and not well integrated" - not that it's not a touch OS, but that it's a crap touch OS, to borrow a term from your discourse.

Yes, the Metro bit is very touchy feely. But (at least for the apps I've tried using) there are some real surprises - like the inability to set app preferences for things like fonts. Or consistent support for pinch zoom. Then there's the ease with which you can get dumped out to the desktop trying to make a settings change.

I wouldn't make a credibility argument about someone else's understanding of Win 8 and include that postscript.

Win 8's a different OS and does indeed break legacy apps. The Cisco IPSEC client's a very visible one. Another big area of change is the sensor platform, which is much more developed in 8 than in 7.

VMWare is one route to deal with this, installing Win 7 is another.

Of course they did, seems some owners were already about sending it back under warranty. I love thinkpads, but too me it is still not clear if this firmware update is/can be a long-term solution due to above arguments. I don't have the need to buy it immediately and will wait what people report next weeks

Currently you have lead_org's result and the one from this guy

Thinkpad Yoga - Digitiser has inaccurate area - Page 4 - Lenovo Community

saying you still see some black hole bending. Maybe not really noticeable when writing somthing with the pen, but if it is just a software calibration issue, I'm wondering: Can it be then so tricky to calibrate this accurately? Thats why I think it's a software hack for a hardware problem and it has to be recalibrated/firmware updated due to aging of the hardware components in worst case over and over. If it just a cheap android tablet/smartphone I wouldn't care, but for 1500 bucks....then I choose rather a working T440s Touch without problems.

I've never seen such a black hole reported on X-Series Thinkpads, another reason why I doubt the calibration issue, it's not like lenovo just began learning producing and calibrating Touch-Notebooks

Hopefully there will be another patch to sort it all out.

Ok I am still waiting for my TPY. I know this is a lot to ask, but can someone very kindly install the firmware patch, test for the black hole. Reformat don't install patch and test for the black hole again. I'd do it, but I don't have my unit yet. I'd REP you

    :p

Well I will disagree with you the touch side of Windows 8.1 but to each his own. Its much better for touch then Windows 7 though.

Windows 8 is built upon Windows 7, meaning its more of an upgrade then a new OS. I was unaware Cisco IPSEC doesn't work correctly in 8 over 7, but it isn't hugely surprising that such a business focused app doesn't work within the first year or so as businesses won't adopt Windows 8 for a few years yet or maybe they will skip it and go to 9? Who knows. I haven't had a single issue with application not working on 8 so from a power user/hardcore gamer perspective Windows 8 is a much improved version of Windows 7, especially the flipping task manager which is honestly amazing in 8! Also native image mounting in Explorer is very nice and I would honestly struggle to go back to 7. I find it weird using 7 on my university computers but I don't do too much explorer and task manager related things at uni :p

Seems on the lenovo site (US), if you change the processor to i5-4300U, it still only lists 4GB ram. However, there are now 2 motherboard options: "Intel HD Graphics 4400" and "Intel HD Graphics 4400 [$0.00]". Selecting the second increases the price by $130.00 and then the ram changes to 8GB!

I've been waiting for i5/8gb combination, might be time to pull the trigger on this one

What happens to the coupon code. They no longer work. I am still waiting for some artists review on Photoshop and ZBrush. By then, the coupon code will be all but gone. How come the sales people at Lenovo doesn't know about these things. All these knowledge should just be there on day one. Maybe that's why they call it Thinkpad Yoga. You have to do a lot of thinking and yogaing around to search for answers about the product.

I recommend just speaking with a Lenovo rep via chat. They are usually very good with discounts. Apparently one of the users was able to get a 15% discount thanks to a chat rep. So customize your order, add it to cart and then chat with a rep and see what is the best deal you can get.

We don't seem to have a UK chat. The US chat folks aren't going to be able to help out with non-US orders, are they?

Try calling Lenovo sales team. I posted a 10% discount code on this thread recently CJNOV10UK. I think the code expired yesterday, but worth a try. You can get further 3% cashback by going through Quidco.

Is there a support for SSD hardware encryption by motherboard/bios or is windows bitlocker the only way to encrypt the drive?

I know. The Cisco IPSEC VPN is End of Sale/End of Life, and has been for a while. It's not going to be officially supported on Win 8 or beyond.

I agree with you. It seems that there's indeed a hardware defect, like magnetic field that not properly shielded, and they just use some software hack written in firmware to hack it. However, every machines magnetic field can be somewhat different, so it will never be accurate for all. What's more, it's possible that the field may get stronger or weaker after years of use, and you can't expect another firmware hack at that time, or even if they want, it almost impossible to create a hack that can deal with the aging properly.

I think may be it's better to wait more time for someone who want an accurate digitizer. Wait for some new batch of products like A01 or A02 (not sure how to call that), when they may really add a proper shield in the hardware, and no longer need to use the hack in the firmware for the them.
