Lenovo just released the a new Ideapad Yoga 13.3" (the Yoga 2) similar specs of the Y2P but with a 1080p display instead of the QHD. I'm wondering, does anyone knows of the panel used in the Yoga 2 is the same one used in the TPY? Or is it different?
As I have mentioned plenty of times before, I'm dying to get my TPY, but with all those screen and dock issues, the Yoga 2 looks very appealing; especially that it's significantly cheaper for the i7 256ssd model.

What do you think guys?
-
No it will be a different panel. The TPY is 12.5" whereas the Yoga 2 is 13.3"

Hi All, I received my TPY i7-4500, 8gb with digitizer from Lenovo.ca last week and couldn't be happier
The form factor is perfect for my needs, more art based with heavy use of a digitizer pen, but with the need for a keyboard 60% of the time.
I have yet to see any screen ghosting, though admittedly I haven't been looking for it and not the least concerned if it does appear, since I went with the 3yr warranty and can get it replaced when they do find a solution (if needed).
For those who are worried about the speed / computing power of these machines, don't be. Sure it's not a gaming/workstation rig, but I was working with 2+ million polygon scenes in Autodesk Maya 2014 and rendering them with GI with no problems. Gaming is also decent considering that there is no dedicated graphics card. I have run Starcraft 2 at good settings 1920x1080 with no noticeable lag. CAD users will have no issue with this machine.
Software tested and confirmed working on TPY:
Autodesk Maya 2014 (2+ million face scenes)
Speedtree v6.2.3 (500,000 face trees with wind animation in realtime)
Nuke v8.1
Zbrush R4v6 (full characters with 1+ million faces, no lag and pressure sensitive brushes)
Photoshop CC
Krita Desktop
Modo 701 (9 million face scene rendered in view port)
Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarmgodofwar424 and soul347 like this. -
hi guys,
i bought the TPY in Hong Kong and i am currently living in Canada, could I buy the accidental plan in Canada or do I have to buy it from the Hong Kong lenovo? The problem is, the Hong Kong Lenovo does not have accidental plan for the TPY... HELP ME PLEASE -
Best bet is to call Canada Lenovo customer support and talk with them directly to find out what your options are. You have nothing really to lose by calling them at: 1 855 253 6686

Hi guys I just wanted to give an update on battery life. I've owned my TPYoga for over a month now and it seems the battery is more fully and accurately calibrated, so that it seems that I am getting better battery life, or at least the remaining battery life indicator appears to be a more accurate than when I first got my machine.
Sometimes with 90% left for example, it will indicate that I have 8 hours of battery life where as before it would never indicate such a high number. Of course I know this fluctuates a lot and can be quite inaccurate. But after monitoring my computer the past weeks I have observed that I burn around 11-14% of battery every hour. Going by this, I can get 7 - 9 hours. So the reported 8 hours by Lenovo IS in fact possible under certain circumstances.
I get these kind of numbers when I am on ENERGY SAVER on 50% brightness with wifi on, doing productivity software such as one note, word, and light web browsing. When I kick up the brightness and do more heavy things, I'm looking at 5-7 hours of battery life.
Whatever the numbers may be, the TPY definitely gets me through a full work day as I use this machine for several hours a day for work. By the time I get home I usually still have plenty of juice left.
One more thing to note is I am using a Samsung 840 Evo SSD which is known for being one of the most power efficient SSD's on the market ( http://www.anandtech.com/show/7173/...-120gb-250gb-500gb-750gb-1tb-models-tested/11). I am not sure if this helps even in the slightest as I swapped it out from the start and haven't had the chance to compare with the stock Samsung SSD. Just wanted to point this out -
There's a shipping forum on the Lenovo forums that gets Yoga-specific after the first few posts. I ordered mine on Feb 6 with an original shipping estimate of Feb 26. That changed to Mar 7 and then yesterday it changed to today (Mar 4). Now, a few hours ago, it changed to Mar 14. So, we'll see. I've read earlier in this forum that the date estimate is not very trustworthy. The Lenovo forum suggests that there was a delay the past week or two due to a part shortage, but that there have been many shipments today. I also noticed I have a fresh hold on my card dated yesterday, so another ray of hope.
Good luck!

Just had confirmation that mine is shipping today

So, it looks like Fujitsu T904 is finally available, so I've configured it so a similar specs as my TPY (i7, 8GB RAM, dock, 3yr onsite warranty, no SSD though) - see below. And it came to $2,843. Even if I factor in some sales discount and a reseller channel which would certainly have cheaper prices it'll still be around 2,400 - 2,500$.
Suddenly TPY sounds not that bad despite all it's problems...
(LIFEBOOK T904, UB,CORE i7-4600U,8GB,320GB HYBRD+16GB CACHE,13.3WQHD,NO 4G,INTEL WLAN(AGN), BT,FHD CAM,PR,65W 3-pin,1YR,vPRO,US,BL,KB,WIN8.1PRO(64-BIT) (BTNAD10000HAAAFS)) -
I tried to tweak brightness settings, but the same issue is still there even with 100% brightness, it really kills my eyes ... =( I'm going to find out how to get my money back, TPY's display is a weak point of this laptop for sure.
-
Hi there, I ordered Jan 27th and last night I received shipping notification. I'd guess this means you may get your shipping notification next week. Following this it states 3-6 working days for delivery so somewhere between Friday and next Thursday.
Of course if you've just had an amount taken from your card that indicates yours is shipping. -
Just to mention that I am getting similar battery life with the stock 256GB SSD. Seeing as the SSD used in the Yoga is just an OEM Samsung 840 Pro i wouldn't be surprised if the Evo uses any less power then it etc.
I have managed 4 or so hours of playing Civilisation V at 50% brightness which is crazy when you think about it.

Yikes, I remember how long it took for mine. Ordered on Jan. 21st and didn't get the shipping notification until February 23rd or 24th, I believe. Oh well, the device is going back to Lenovo.
-
yep, got the E-mail last night
-
Oh no, this would be a deal breaker for me as I'm hoping to read pdf's on this machine. Do other people find the TPY screen tiring for eyes?
-
I've had mine for around five weeks, and I love my screen. I vary between 50% - 80% brightness and haven't noticed any problems with PWM. Granted, my eyes are not particularly sensitive to this sort of thing... but I do spend hours reading on it at a time. I wouldn't let this be the deal breaker for you.
-
Unless you suffer from eye strain due to PWM on other LED backlit monitors and TV's you will be fine.
There is also some power saving setting that be disabled to increase the frequency of the PWM which has been mentioned to reduce eye strain of those who suffer from it.
I wouldn't let it put you off the device unless you have a history of suffering with PWM. Not many people can even notice it so its quite a person dependant issue. Majority of LED backlit screens use PWM but the frequency changes from vendor to vendor so the slower the frequency the more chance of people noticing it.

Funny how things end up...
I ordered the TPY on Feb 5. I got a decent deal, as I caught the seemingly small window where the regular HDDs were offered for TPYs in the US (I was going to add my own SSD when it got here).
Now, 2 days ago, the T904 becomes available for the US... So, I order it, being fed up waiting for the TPY. I honestly wanted the T904 more anyway, but I was not going to wait forever for it to come out. As soon as I ordered the T904, I called Lenovo to cancel the TPY order, which I was told could not be guaranteed, but the rep was pretty sure that it would be canceled. Not so... It shipped today. I have a TPY that I do not want on the way, and the T904 that I do want (which also shipped today, by the way--just 2 days after I ordered it).
If anyone was looking for a TPY in the US and doesn't want to wait, send me a message. I don't want to make a profit, so I'd sell it for what I paid for it. Otherwise, I'll be sending it back to Lenovo unopened. If you live near DC, even better--I can meet you in person.

Hi,
I am interested in buying it. What is the configuration? -
Look above, I edited my last post.
-
Hi!
I'm interested as well. I don't live anywhere close to D.C. though (West Tennessee). Would be willing to send you a shipping label! I presume Lenovo's warranty is attached to the machine rather than the buyer? Have you unboxed the TPY yet?
As a longtime lurker on this forum and this thread (I read every single post of it), I wanted to say thank you to everybody for this thread and the massive amount of information it provided! -
I do not have it yet. It should be here by the 11th, according to the tracking. I do not plan to open the box. I have no idea if the warranty transfers. If it does not, I will just return it to Lenovo. I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase a laptop new with no warranty.
If the hard drive configurations come back, I would suggest you order direct from Lenovo. The only reason I am offering this laptop to anyone else is so someone can get the good deal that only a few of us were privy to when the HDD option was available. -
From all of my experiences with ThinkPads, the warranty is tied to the machine, not the purchaser. I have purchased second-hand ThinkPads before, and gotten warranty service on them. All I've needed in the past is the machine type and serial number.

Did you get the T904 directly from Fujitsu? If I may ask - how much did you pay, what's the config?
Once you get it - could you post your impressions at http://forum.notebookreview.com/fujitsu/738118-fujitsu-lifebook-t904-10.html - I'm wondering how it holds up against TPY. -
I believe the stock SSD on TPYs is an OEM variant of the 840 non Pro version - at least that's what the part number suggests (Pros are MZ-7P, Evos are MZ-7TE and plain 840s are MZ-7TD and my TPY stock SSD model is MZ7TD256HAFV)
-
Really? When I Google the code awhile back it came up with the 840 Pro OEM. Regardless Samsung SSD's all seem to have the same power efficiency which is a good thing, the only difference is speed.

That is offered for $1999.99 on the US website. I got a 5% student discount. Price to my door was around $2012.
That config is offered as a stock config. It's pretty much the same stats as I ordered with my TPY.
Sure, I will give my impression of the machine. I don't consider myself good at hardware reviews, and I can hardly compare the T904 to the TPY if I don't use the TPY. I am betting I will think what I have already estimated--the T904 is a better machine, and I am paying for it (the difference, I mean). -
Yep, I've seen references to it as both pro and non-pro on different sites, but based on the part numbers I believe it is a regular, non-pro versions.
As for power consumption - when idle they are indeed very close, however under load there can be as much as 1W of a difference between 840 non-pro and 840 Pro/Evo (which are very close) - I'm using anandtech's review for reference: AnandTech | Samsung SSD 840 EVO Review: 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 750GB & 1TB Models Tested.
There might be differences between OEM and non-OEM versions, though...godofwar424 likes this. -
10x! I also suspect T904 is a better machine, but ~800$ is a substantial difference, so it'll be very interesting to get your impressions once you get it. The only thing I am concerned with T904 is a single-channel memory config which might hurt performance, the rest seems much better than TPY - at least on paper.
-
Yes, with ThinkPads the warranty is 100% tied to the machine and not the person. I've had to check previously and have had to use it. So no worries there for you.

I think it is 12%. Still pretty good. Thanks for the heads up!

The T904 is unfortunately out of my budget range, and I am a Lenovo-optimist, so I'm definitely interested. I most likely will slap on a 3y nbd+adp anyways. One drawback to being newly registered is that I have no clue how to write PMs, ...
-
For me, it's a 1200 dollar difference with the deal going on with Lenovo. There is no way I am going for it now. Thank Fujitsu for disregarding an entire segment of the market by not providing a cheap consumer model and making it so replacing the HDD voids the warranty.
-
hi all,
I recently installed the new touchpad driver and its making my touchpad very unresponsive (1 finger click right clicks sometimes, scrolling is alot less smooth, etc). Has anyone else encountered this? Is there any way to revert to the previous driver? -
Did anybody notice that they Lenovo hiked the price for an i5-4200 on the website? it used to be only a $50 addition, now it's $100!
Also for Austrian students there's currently a sale going on for the i7-4500, 8gb, 256ssd, digitizer model. (see ubook.at) at EUR 1379. What I found odd personally is that the Lenovo representative in that forum claimed that there was no screen protector. I'd love to go and just peel it off in front of her, but alas, not going back until June.
Deanwvu, I'm definitely still interested in the machine, if we can figure out a way to handle this. -
Yes they increased the price two days ago and now put it on sale
-
Code does not work in UK, unfortunatelly.
-
Go to Device Manager=>Mice and other pointing devices Right click on "ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device", select Properties. Select the Driver tab and press Roll Back Driver.
I actually find this update better than 17.0.12.68 for what it's worth. -
Thanks for the tip. For now i have reverted back to the old driver and its working great again. Just curious, what does the new update have to offer that im missing? I found the 2-finger scrolling much less responsive, and sometimes my 1-finger would be detected as a 2 finger scroll, but i feel like im missing something.
-
I have a X240 but its the same driver. I seem to experience the same issue as you. When I am scrolling using 2 fingers, even after I have lifted my fingers, sometimes the scroll icon still remains so the next time if I touch using just 1 finger and move the pointer, it is recognized as 2 fingers and the scrolling happens unexpectedly. Its getting really annoying.

FINALLY got my TPY... After 3 different order attempts. Really enjoying it so far. The quality is all there and no problems to speak of. Too early for a total assessment, but so far, so good. And I'm a pretty picky person and will send something back at the drop of a hat if I don't like it. So I'm pleased that it's everything I expected.
Sent from my GS4 -
Just curious what exactly makes the specs of the T904 a "much better" machine? To me the two seem pretty much identical apart from the converting mechanism, oh and an ethernet port that pops out on the T904 but me personally wouldn't have a need for that.
$800 is a hell of a lot of extra money for an ethernet port and twist instead of flip mechanisms.
I mean even the ghosting issue which some people are having, even if I was experiencing it I wouldn't spend $800 for a machine without it. Not to mention the STUPID choice of single channel memory which basically cripples the device for anything that utilizes the GPU. Obviously not everybody does any 3D work, but I am using my Yoga for CAD as well as light gaming and the T904 would not be able to run them the way the TPY does just due to having single channel memory. -
It's basically ports, larger screen, lighter weight, and little longer battery (so they say).
I'm with you though, and as someone who works with 3D Animation, the Yoga is a better fit. Also, not that they're bad, but I've had the swivel convertibles several times and the double hinge setup to me so far is a much better build.
Sent from my GS4 -
I remember hearing that the T904 has single channel ram, which sounds pretty bad.
-
That's a deal breaker for me at least, i'd have sent it back if i only could discover that earlier .. It feels like back to CRT era, my eyes are really sensitive to PWM apparently.
Here is another video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kT9BjWi-PM, a guy is running "PWM control" application, he thinks it flickers less at 30- 40% brightness, it peaks at 80% and no flickering at 100% -
Hi, all..
Just spent the last 3 hours going through this thread.. Very informative, and I hope all the TPY users can help me out in my purchase.
I am contemplating buying a TPY, just needed some help in selecting the model. I intend to use it for home and office, so there's some commuting involved. My primary requirements in computing are the basic office suite, i.e. a lot of word, ppt and excel, mostly in tandem. Internet, and movies fill out the basic requirements. Not too much gaming.
I'm a little impatient and hate it when the laptop takes a while to boot up, or slows down when running various applications. I also tend to store a lot of data on my laptop. Would the i5 4200 model with 8 gb RAM and 256 Gb SSD meet my needs or should I go for a higher or lower processor with the 128 Gb model and replace the SSD with a 512 Gb version.?
Also can I buy the 4 Gb RAM version - is it adequate for now and can I get an upgrade at a later date?
What is the real world performance upgrade in an i5 4200 as opposed to the i3. I saw it somewhere earlier on the thread that these were quite similar except for turbo boost... where will this be applicable?
One of my main flaws is that i'm a little rough with my equipment which is one of the reasons why I was considering the TPY as opposed to the yoga 2 pro. I hope the reliability and ruggedness of the TPY would be adequate to handle rough use and frequent transportation (especially the hinges).
And finally, how useful is the digitiser pen - I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I think it might be useful for taking notes and keeping memos - Is this worth the additional 250$ I would have to spend for the upgrade from a non FHD model?
Thanks. -
The screen-flipping mechanism is just personal taste, I think. As long as they are both done well, that's all that matters.
I think it's been YEARS since I plugged my x220 in an ethernet port. Still, it's nice to have once in a while. There have been times, when I was moving huge files, that I was glad to have a gigabit connection (here at home even).
The advantages of the T904:
--IGZO screen, higher resolution and slightly larger
--Better battery life (likely due to the screen)
--Smart card reader. I actually have a use for it, and it's nice to have it built in rather than carrying a USB reader. I have one "built in" to my X220--in the express card slot on the left side. I keep it in there all the time. Sadly, no express card slot in the TPY
--Swappable battery. I may actually get a spare battery (with an external charger) at some point.
Are those amenities worth an extra $800?? Maybe, maybe not. I probably would have went with the TPY if Lenovo would have shipped it in a reasonable time frame. Part of the reason I ordered the T904 was that I was upset that my order was delayed from Lenovo. We are also doing well with $$ lately, so I don't mind splurging a little!
The single-channel RAM thing is disappointing... Has that been confirmed?? What document/link states that the T904 is single-channel? -
You can buy the 128gb SSD and then upgrade it to a 512GB or 1024GB Samsung Evo drive later if you wish.
I would go for the i5-4200U as that is your best bet for both performance as well as battery life, and gives you great gaming capabilities (older games on medium settings and some newer games at 720p on low/medium settings)
I would recommend the 8GB version if you can as the RAM isn't user upgrade-able and that way its future proofed
The digitiser pen is basically vital to me now, after using it for taking lecture notes and even doing my revision notes its just a game changer compared to just using a mouse and keyboard or one of them crappy capacitive stylus'
The TPY really is built extremely well in terms of ruggedness. Magnesium alloy rollcage for the base with carbon fibre for the top casing. IMO it is built like a damn tank compared to any other ultrabook. The hinges are also extemely durable and the lift and lock system for the keyboard when in tablet mode has been tested very thoroughly.
Regarding extra storage, you could also buy a 128GB SD Card. Fast enough to put documents and movies on etc.ranjitvp likes this.
