Fair enough.
Yes, I am following the Dell thread closely:
Has someone noticed ghost images (screen burn-in) on Dell XPS 12 Duo? - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community
Sounds like at least they have engineers that believe a new batch of panels with new part numbers that they think are fixed. Of course, as with any IR, we can't really know if it's fixed until weeks or maybe months go by without IR being observed.
Quite frankly, any amount of IR (even a few seconds) should not be tolerable. My use-case would make it extremely problematic.
Anyway, I'm hopeful that LG is providing fixed 12.5" screens. I will be importing a Panasonic MX3, it is an expensive beast that probably uses this same cursed 12.5" LG screen, and I won't have much way of getting it repaired if it's broken. But now that Lenovo and Dell both think the problem is solved, I will wait a month to hopefully allow Panasonic to get the new panels too, and also to see if anyone reports problems with them, before I buy the MX3.

2- Here are a couple good threads regarding this. Personally I went with the Fugitsu T-5000, and ordered it direct from Fugitsu, 2 pens for $55 CAD. It took 2 weeks to arrive (GTA), they work perfectly, feel much like a Wacom Intous 3 without the rubber, and has 2 buttons and an active eraser (which is super hard to find)
TabletPC Compatible Wacom Pens (Work with Surface Pro) - Page 8
Modbook Pro Pen adds button you've been missing
Fujitsu Digitizer Pen T-5000 is a two-button charmer
3- I have yet to get one, but I'm looking into this one due to its durability and waterproof-ness:
Thule Gauntlet 13" Macbook Pro Laptop Sleeve (TAS-113) - Black : Laptop Sleeves - Future Shop -
I also went with the Fujitsu T-5000 for $30 ish on Amazon. It is indeed almost exactly like the Intuos 3 pen. The only thing I miss from my Intuos 3 is tilt sensitivity. If only there were a way to get that on a tablet pc I'd be in art heaven.
I'm having an odd issue that any input whatsoever wakes it up, even if the clamshell is closed. If I accidentally leave my wireless mouse on in the bag, I'll come back hours later to find my battery nearly drained and my bag burning hot. I just have to be careful to make sure the mouse is switched off before I store it. Maybe setting it to go to hibernate on lid close will help?
Edit: I set it to hibernate on lid close when on battery and that seems to have cleared it up nicely.
-
Thanks! T-5000 seems really good, I think I'll get that too. Why do you need two pens though? Do pens get bad in time?
Case you suggested is good if you're looking for a waterproof case. I'm more looking for a slim sleeve to carry in my backpack, and handles are useful to take it more formal meetings, and conferences. But I'm not planning to carry it around outside in that sleeve.
-
I ordered this one:
Amazon.com: Targus Quash TSS55318US Carrying Case (Sleeve) for 13.3 Notebook - Black, Gray, Tangerine: Camera & Photo
I got it for putting my laptop and accessories in while it's in my backpack. It fits just right (it's designed for slightly wider, but not as thick ultrabooks, so its thickness makes it a tight fit) and the pouch is just barely large enough to fit the power cable and the mouse at the same time. Fortunately I don't need the charger cable most of the time. It easily lasts through a day most of the time.
If I were to get a different sleeve I'd pay closer attention to the dimensions. The TPY is 0.75" thick, while this sleeve was 0.70", and look for one with a slightly larger accessory pocket, perhaps with pen holders for my stylus. A handle might be nice too, but I almost always have my backpack with me.
Now I just need to get a larger backpack. My current one has to stretch to fit my TPY in it. XD -
Cheapest I could find a single pen was around $45 USD, so for me it was better to get the pair. Always handy to have a spare too. Also the nibs are interchangable with wacom pens prior to Intous 4, which is great since I use an Intous 3 at work
-
You just described me to a T. I had a Surface Pro 1 and loved it, except for the keyboard, since I do a LOT of work at night with a laptop on my lap. Loved the size though, and the tablet functionality was great. I sold it, bought a Yoga 2 Pro, but the QHD screen was problematic since I do a lot of RDP to servers I manage for clients, and that doesn't scale well. I ran it all the time at 1920x1080, and figured why bother with that if I'm going to run it at that resolution. So I returned that after a month, and got a Thinkpad Helix, figuring I'd have the best of both worlds. And while I like it as a laptop (now that I finally tracked down my wireless issues to my Airport Extreme and replaced that and now my wireless stays connected) I find I'm not using it as a tablet with just the screen due to the heat. So anytime I am in "tablet" mode, it's reversed on the base anyway. So my main reason to pick the Helix over the Thinkpad Yoga two months ago was negated now anyway. If I"m going to have a "tablet mode" computer that always has a keyboard (which is what the Helix is due to the heat issue) I may as well have the newer processor, faster graphics, and backlit keyboard again. Not to mention an SD slot.
So I'm contemplating picking up a Thinkpad Yoga now instead, since I have someone who's willing to buy my Helix from me.
Since you seem to have gone much of the same path I did, is there anything negative about your switch to the different platform? I look at everything between the Helix and TPY and I can't see a downside to the move for me, since I never use the pure tablet form for this Helix anyway...

@JDThird
I strongly feel TPY is a better option. However I would suggest you to wait for few weeks. Recently Lenovo has accepted issues about Image Retention issue and they are rectifying it. So I feel that it may take a while to get IR freee TPY. I am going to wait for a month before buying it. -
I've had the TPY for a bit and while I'm enjoying the form factor a lot, I just had it crap out on me. I had replaced the SSD with a larger capacity one and reinstalled the OS as well as installing new updates and etc. Everything was going fine for a while until this morning when I was on the internet and suddenly the screen froze (but the sound was still coming through). This has sort of happened in the past where the computer will become unresponsive but after a couple seconds it returns to normal. However, this time it had been a minute and it still wasn't responding, so I shut it down using the power button. When I turned on the computer again, it led me to the boot menu where it asked me to launch either the Windows Boot Menu or boot from the SSD. But no matter which selection I pick, it would always return to the same menu. It seems like it's stuck in a loop and I can't figure out how to just boot normally. Has anyone else had a similar issue or is this something I'll have to call up tech support for help? I'm also tempted to just wipe out the SSD and reinstall the OS again, but I don't want to do it everytime this happens and if this happens frequently, then perhaps I'll have to return it.

I've been following this thread for a very long time trying to decide whether to pull the trigger on one of these. I originally wanted a Surface Pro when they first came out, but the screen size and lack of Haswell processor made me rethink the purchase. When the Pro2 was announced I was very excited and almost bought one, but the small screen size and difficulty of laptop use got me looking elsewhere until I found the TPY. It seems like the perfect product for me and I'm almost ready to make a purchase. I'm very happy to see that the IR issue is acknowledged and being rectified. I was also concerned about photo editing because of the low color gamut, but based on other users' posts that doesn't seem to be an issue either.
However, I just checked pricing on the US site and it seems to be much higher than 6 months ago. An i7 with digitizer and 256gb ssd is coming up at $1979. I remember checking a while back and, unless I'm mistaken, the same specs were quoted at around $1700. Has something changed in the pricing structure or am I mistaken in what the original pricing was on release? -
@klavkonz
I had the exact thing happen, except I hadn't swapped out the SSD at all. It was just stuck in a loop that kept dumping me into the Windows Boot Menu.
I ended up sending it in and they replaced the main board and the SSD. It took about two weeks overall to get the laptop back in my hands. -
Does anybody have any idea of an external battery pack/charger for the TPY?? planning on going to Japan this summer and that's an 11hour and a half flight, also British Airways only have seat power on some of their 777 planes in Economy so something to maybe double its life would be nice.
I wonder how long the battery would go if I capped the max CPU to 30%. Hmmm

I have no idea if this would actually work, and it's a bit hacky, but you could try it.
Anker has an external battery that can supply up to 19 V/3 A (It looks like the Yoga brick is 20 V/2.25 A):
http://www.amazon.com/20000mAh-Multi-Voltage-External-Netbooks-Notebooks/dp/B00B45EOYS/
and it looks like the largest charger tip is sized for a T60/X60/R60, so it's probably about the same size as the old round Thinkpad chargers.
Then there are adapters that take the old round tips and convert them to the rectangular tips:
Amazon.com: Patuoxun® Power Converter Cable Adapter for Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 0B47046 Laptop: Computers & Accessories
Unfortunately, some of the reviews said the rectangular tip was a little too large for the Thinkpad Yoga. One person had to file down the yellow plastic to get it to fit.
I don't think there is any product currently that would "just work" for the Yoga. -
Hey there mate, I was looking for one to take on a bike trip. I found the below to be alright. Havent bought it yet, but will probably go with that.

Just got the thinkpad yoga with digitizer today. For those who got it as well, is your stylus relatively tight within the holder? The plastic body of my stylus is all scratched up pulling it out of the holder and I've had this for less than 3 hours. It seems minor as the stylus still works, but I would hate if it stopped working because of this.
On a side note, is there a way to make the Touch Keyboard come up automatically when I'm in tablet mode while using desktop apps?
I followed this thread up to about post 200, but couldn't keep up with it. My apologies if questions have been answered already. -
When I got my Yoga, the pen silo was pretty tight as well. I just loosened the screw in the corner with the silo slightly and problem solved. Doesn't scratch the stylus anymore, and still feels pretty solid there.
Not so sure on the keyboard though. -

Thanks. I loosened the screw on that corner and the stylus comes out without scraping now. I had to loosen it quite a bit that I worry the screw will fall out, so I used a hole puncher, punched some adhesive foam and plugged the screw hole. Perfect fit. Thanks again.

I just installed the Wacom drivers. Two questions....
1. Is there a free software that I can use to test pressure sensitivity?
2. I've noticed threads regarding the 273 calibration settings, but it won't work with Wacom drivers. I tried running the command for the 273 point calibration and indeed it does not run. But none of the threads ever solved it. Anyone get it to work. My calibration is OK, but is off on the left side. -
Hi all,
I've recently purchased a thinkpad yoga (i5 4200, with 128 gb ssd, and digitizer) from a Microsoft Store in Canada. With my student discount the laptop came in at under $1050, and for that price I think it, if it were without defect, would be an unbeatable value.
Nevertheless, the laptop does suffer from a defect, a major one, and I'm hoping that one of the knowledgeable members of this forum can help me identify what it is. The wallpaper I have on my desktop is a static picture--mostly grey, black, and white--but whenever I switch to the desktop it appears as though it is wavy, almost like an active wallpaper, for about thirty seconds to a minute, before the picture finally becomes static again. This problem also occurs when I switch to certain apps, like a dictionary app on the metro side, which has a taupe(ish) color. My question, then...Is this the ghosting issue that everyone is talking about on this forum, or some other problem with the display?
I have looked through this forum for answers, but I'm incapable of saying for sure that the problem with my yoga is, indeed, merely a ghosting, or rather watermarking, issue, or some other issue altogether.
Thanks for your help, in advance. And good luck to everyone who has purchased this product. -
I am considering buying a Thinkpad Yoga and wonder if there are any known issues I should be aware of?
- Is the laptop running cool and silent?
- Does the laptop resume from sleep fast and without any problems?
- I will go with the 1366x768 screen. Are there problems with image retention on this panel type? Is the screen good in general?
- I have seen a thread on Lenovo forums about overheating when charging in sleep mode. It sounds a bit scary. Has anyone here had any problems with overheating?
-
All kinds of displays (CRT, plasma, LCD, IPS) can have ghosting problems, see
Screen burn-in - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It also talks about preventions,
BTW, Mac Pro 2013 also suffers from this kind of problems
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23853784#23853784
Some ghosting can be fixed with a software solution, but if the problem is very serious, one has to get a replacement. -
1. Fresh Paint should suffice - you can also download the free version of OneNote from the store and try it with that.
2. I believe the trick is to do the 273 point calibration BEFORE you install the Wacom drivers. Try uninstalling "Wacom Device" in Device Manager, rebooting and then try the calibration. -
Hmm...
It sounds like you may have another problem unique to your machine - when referring to ghosting/watermarking/retention etc. a faint static image of what was on the screen remains when you change what was on the display. Here's my Yoga a month or so after I got it - TP Yoga Image Retention Photo by Tim_Qi | Photobucket
It looks severe in this case, but it has yet to bother me in my daily student work yet. Besides, I never use a light grey background in any case.
Just to be sure, can you post a video of your screen and its defect? -
Maybe all kinds of display can have ghosting problems, but on some it is hardly visible and on others it is very visible.
Let me rephrase my question:
Is there a similar level of image retention on the Thinkpad Yoga 1366x768 panels as there is on the 1920x1080 panels? -
Unfortunately, your question is not easy to answer by someone here, unless he/she had used both the 1366x768 panels and 1920x1080 panels and both of these are defective (i.e. have the ghosting issues).

I am looking to buy the ThinkPad Yoga. I've looked around a lot and it seems like the best fit for me. (I currently have an X series tablet).
I'm trying to find the best price on a model that includes the digitizer pen as well as 8GB ram. I'm a post-secondary student in Canada. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should order it from? -
* My TPY runs silent relatively silent at idle, but if you push it harder (full HD video, compiling large project in VS, some 3D) the fan comes on and it is kind of whiny
* That depends on the BIOS version and whether you are using onelink dock or not. Without the dock and with the BIOS version before last it was mostly OK. Not very fast, but definitely workable. Last BIOS version (that was supposed to fix onelink dock issues) brought back the "stuck in the sleep" problems for me. The laptop would not wake up and you have to hard-reset it. Also, if you are using dock (i.e. - if you put it to sleep while connected to the dock and try to wake it up stand alone and vice-versa) it all goes sour really fast - it won't wake up at all, or it'll insist it's not docked, although it is and will not disable the internal screen even if it's closed, etc.
Bottom line - if you do not use dock and can stay away from the last BIOS update you should probably be OK in terms of sleep/resume.
* Haven't seen this panel - no idea.
* I haven't had an issue with it waking up in the bag and/or overheating for quite a while. This was an issue with early BIOS version that it'll get stuck at, what appears to be max CPU clock and fan at full throttle and the only way to get it out was to either use pin-hole reset or let the battery run out, but I think newer BIOS version have solved this - at least for me. -
For those who still want to buy TPY (despite all the issues documented here and my recommendation to stay away
) - I got a 12% off coupon in the mail - good till April 7th.

Thanks a lot for your detailed answers!
I was planning to buy the onelink dock so the problems you describe are quite a bummer for me. I have had similar problems on my 5 year old Dell Latitude E6400 and I really thought those kind of problems was something from the past that but apparently that is not the case. Maybe I will wait some time to see if the problems are fixed or maybe I will buy another laptop instead. Is there a thread somewhere about the sleep/resume problems with the onelink?
Good to know that the waking up in bag problem has been resolved.
Any other problems I should be aware of? -
Hi,
I still have an unresolved issue with my ThinkPad Yoga:
Sometimes when I open my laptop from sleep mode, the trackpad doesn't work. This means that i can't right-click, left-click, nor move the mouse via track-pad. Does somebody know how to resolve this issue?
Thanks! -

So, I just wanted to let you all know that I went back and installed version 10.18.10.3282 of the graphics driver. I had earlier installed 10.18.10.3383 through System Update. I did this two or three days ago, it seems to have cleared up the issues I was having with the computer failing to wake from standby and draining the battery on standby. Might be worth trying this older driver if you've been having issues. I have the OneLink Pro dock and have not had any issues with sleeping it on the dock and waking it elsewhere and vise versa since the rollback.

Any idea how to set a 150% font size?
In some program the result it's really blurry, like chrome.
i've solved with enabling "disable compatibility mode on high DPI" but it must be done 1by1 for all programs.. :/ -
Unfortunately windows desktop just doesn't scale well on high-density displays. That's why anything over 1080p on 13" and under is just pointlessly overkill. Desktop just doesn't look right scaled and I have just gotten used to 1:1 scaling now on the Yoga. At first i was a little small but im used to it now, and make use of the extra real-estate when being productive!
I just zoom in Chrome when I need to see a webpage clearer (Hold CTRL and just 2 finger scroll up/down OR pinch to zoom which I find a little awkward to use on Chrome.) -
Hi guys,
I am sorry to disturb but 350 pages to read are a bit time consuming.. I am craving to get my hands on the yoga and I am probably going to buy it soon in NY.
My questions are related to some "supposed" problems which were affecting the old versions and probably the new ones as well: Wi-Fi and the screen. Considering my point of view I am more directioned towards the new 12,5" yoga with the 1900*1080 screen, as I feel that the yoga 2 pro resolution is merely a marketing tool and not exactly useful. I still think that 1900*1080 is too much for that screen size, nevertheless I can't find anything quite similar (suggestion accepted).
Now, the question remains: which one should I go for and what type of "defects" are well known/should I be aware of? Is the 12,5 a better option that the yoga 2 pro?
Thanks a lot to everyone for your help -
I chose to get the ThinkPad Yoga over the Yoga 2 Pro for these reasons:
-Better keyboard (better sized keys and more travel) which also retracts and becomes flat in tablet mode
-Better trackpad (bigger and fully clickable)
-TrackPoint
-More sturdy build quality
-Active digitizer
-1920x1080 resolution
-Option for Wifi AC (my wifi has been rock solid from the start btw)
-2 usb 3.0 ports
-Option for onelink docking
-More sturdy hinge
Main advantages of the Yoga 2 Pro:
-Thinner and lighter
-Some prefer the aesthetics of the Y2P
-Some want a ultra high resolution
-Better speakers
-Some prefer 13.3 inches over 12.5
The main issue people have complained about with the ThinkPad Yoga is image retention/ghosting. I don't know what percent of ThinkPad Yoga users experience this, but I have not experienced it yet after 3 months of owning mine. -
Hi soul, thanks for your reply.
So, ghosting hasn't been solved on the new yoga, but what about the yellowish screen of the 2 pro and the wi-fi of the pro?any improvement there as well? And, as well, any improvement with halving the resolution through win 8 (i remember when it was still a big issue when I looked at it). -
There's no such yellow issue as this display is true RGB and not Pentile.
The ghosting, users experiencing this can soon get a new revised screen part from Lenovo that fixes it. But its not like every Yoga suffers noticeable IR. I have had mine for 3 months now with not even a slight hint of any IR etc..
1080p is the limit for me at this screen size. I mean I use 1:1 ratios as I find it looks the best but Windows 8's tablet interface scales well, unlike Desktop which is still quite poor at scaling high resolutions. I find the smaller view of things mean more real estate for multiple windows open which is great for productivity.
Here's an example of Word and Chrome(using wikipedia) at 1080p with 1:1 scaling. Might give you an idea

The price definitely increased over the last couple months. I was quite upset with such a high price increase without any visible upgrade on the computer itself. I eventually bought mine (i5, 128gb, 4gb RAM) from Microsoft Store. If I remember correctly, MS online store has both i5 and i7 configurations. You should definitely check before buying. I saved nearly 400 dollars by buying from the MS store, compared to Lenovo's online store.
-
I own mine for a week, I don't have any of the problems you mentioned. My screen is 1920x1080 though.
-
I'm a grad student in Canada and I bought mine from the Microsoft Store at a local mall. Mine is 4GB though. I suggest, you call the MS store customer service and ask if this one will be available soon: Buy Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga Touchscreen 2-in-1, Core i7 - Microsoft Store Canada Online Store If so, don't forget to ask if it has the digitizer or not.
Mine is this: Buy Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga Touchscreen 2 in 1, Intel Core i5 - Microsoft Store Canada Online Store and it has a digitizer.
And they have 10% discount for students!
