I would get no. 1 because it has a better CPU and a faster SSD.

    Other question:

I just talked with a sales rep from Lenovo and he told me that I could not transfer warranty or extend the warranty on my name if I bought a used laptop from a friend or a refurbished one from ebay.

    Is that true?

Its relatively easy to get an ideapad yoga from the outlet for under $700 with at or around those specs. same for a non digitizer thinkpad.
The ideapad is sleeker, and lighter, but no digitizer. you'll have to deal with scaling issues due to the beautiful but gimmicky high res screen.
The thinkpad has a digitizer, and more ruggedness. you'll get an appropriately resolution'd screen, but have some mild ghosting issues that don't really effect everyday work but can become an annoyance. .

There is no answer to 'which machine is better' they're both great, and both have there problems. You just need to assess your needs and pick appropriately. I will say take a few hours and get a model off the outlet. You'll easily save 500-700 bucks with no tradeoff whatsoever..
You still get warranty, most come in like new condition (except scratch n dent), and warranty can still be upgraded.
I don't think either computer is worth $1400
but at 700 its a steal.

as for the warranty thing, it was confirmed 2-3 pages back or so =) its true from what I understand.

Just to clarify here (and I'm by no means an expert) but you are combining too many scenario's above in a blanket question that has different answers.

You don't "transfer" warranties, they follow the machine, not the individual. So that's true, they are not transferable but that has no impact on warranty support.

You can't extend the warranty on your "name" because they aren't in your "name", they are in the machine's name.

Buying a laptop used is different from the refurb store. To the best of my knowledge, you can not buy additional warranty on refurbished items from the Lenovo outlet. The warranty they provide is it.

If you buy a laptop used, you can extend the warranty in most cases as long as it's currently in warranty. You can add a warranty or extend a warranty once it's expired.

This is what I've experienced first hand anyways, but ymmv.

Hi guys, I've read this thread quite thoroughly and appreciate all the insightful comments. Just purchased my first Thinkpad, settling on the yoga to replace my Surface Pro 1. It had all the features I was looking for with minimal compromise. I've also used windows/Lenovo updater to ensure I'm running the latest firmware.

HOWEVER, there is this annoying circular dot in the top right hand corner. I can't tell whether it is just under the pre-applied screen protector although it certainly isn't a dead pixel. It doesn't look like it's below the screen either, but rather like dried water droplet. To those who have removed the protector, if I opened it at the corner, just to clean the screen, would I be able to put the screen protector back without any problems?

EDIT: Took it back to MS Store. They gave me a brand new one and also added the back to school $150 offer with office on top of the 10% discount even though they said they couldn't combine it yesterday. So yay!!!! The new yoga is working perfectly well.

I was going to say that this sounds like a stuck pixel and just take it back to the store for an exchange, but you already did that... NICE!

I seem to have some odd problems with my mini HDMI output on the TPY now - when I use a standard mini-HDMI to HDMI cable it doesn't output to my monitor.

But if I use the same cable with a HDMI to DVI-D adapter it works with the monitor nicely - so it seems the mini-HDMI can send an output? A straight HDMI to HDMI connection doesn't work.

Is this a driver issue and are there any ideas on what to do with this?

Never did see an answer to this question, and I think it'd be beneficial to everyone if someone had an answer so here goes:

Has anyone gotten tpfancontrol, or some other fan controller to work with this machine?
I've tried all the versions and it did not work for me. If it works, what bios(?) version are you on? would anything else matter? Some driver version maybe?

So, I ended up taking my second Yoga back because the hinge was coming off. On my Third Yoga. Touchpad is a lot louder, the backspace button makes a different noise from the other keys, almost like a looser sound. As it's one of the keys I press a lot, that's disappointing and incredibly annoying. The bottom bezel is also not completely flush to the screen. Over all, not sure if I'll be keeping this. Most likely will return it.

I'll have to admit I havn't completely read the thread, so this questions may already have been answered.

    1) Regarding the ghosting problem. Is this fixed now? So if I order a Thinkpad Yoga and get the ghosting problem (I'm aware of that the computer could be manufactured earlier this year) and then send it back, will they replace the display so that it is functioning properly?
    2) Does all models have M.2 card? If not, is it possible to install a M.2 card in all models? The model I will order (if I do) is this one: 20C0003TMS. Cannot find any clear information whether this have possibilities for a M.2 card or not.

Sorry if my english is not 100% correct, this is not my native language. Thanks in advance!

    EDIT:

I'm also wondering if someone know if these kind of nibs fit in this pen: http://www.amazon.com/Penabled-Tablet-Pc-Eraser-Pen/dp/B000085BDB/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
    Nibs:
    http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Stroke-...f=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1406999599
    http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Ultimat...f=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1406999599

Which nibs are the best for lecture notetaking on the Thinkpad Yoga?

Sorry I don't have time to dig through all the replies in this thread.
I'm trying to upgrade the WiFi on my thinkpad yoga (digitizer model) from 2.4G only to 5G 802.11 AC. But I'm getting 1802 unauthorized network card error on my generic intel 7260 card. Obviously, thinkpad had locked down network adapter models.

I tried searching for fru list for thinkpad yoga wireless card models but found nothing.

I saw some ebay listings on thinkpad-compatible wireless AC mini-pcie cards, but none of them says anything about thinkpad yoga (20CD model).
Have anyone successfully upgraded their wireless card? Any suggestions on which model to get? Thanks a lot.

You don't need to dig through all the replies in this thread, there's a search function, when you had searched for wireless AC you could have found a possible answer I posted a while ago:

I think you need FRU 04X6010 according to the FRU listing?

Is there any way to make the pen require more pressure before it starts inking? I use a surface pro pen that seems to be fine, but the pen that came with the yoga writes about a 16th of an inch before the pen even makes contact. Also, I've noticed the pen sizes in onenote seem to come out much thicker than they have on other tablets. Any way to change that? I end up having to use the smallest size for certain things, but has no pressure sensitivity. Changing the tip feel in the Wacom driver doesn't help.

Make sure the Wacom Feel driver is installed. The wacom settings will change the sensitivity quite a lot, you'll notice the difference if it's working. Also some drawing programs have pen pressure sensitivity control options. In photoshop you need to activate the pressure sensitivity on the brush itself to get any feedback. Other programs do not support pressure sensitivity, so make sure that your desired program supports it.

I have the feel drivers installed. If I change the tip feel, it just changed the pressure curve, but not the starting pressure. I only use onenote.

Edit: I ended up playing with the ISD_Tablet.dat file for a while and was able to make it work much better.

I just had this issue for the first time.

While doing just some surfing my TPY got hot and fan was spinning, looking at CPU Thinkpad OneLink Dock Management (32 bit) was continuously 33% CPU.

I'm not using a OneLink dock so I uninstalled the OneLink dock software, afterwards CPU usage and fan immediately stopped.

Apologies if someone has answered this, but I was having trouble finding out the answer.

Can the lenovo thinkpad yoga power this portable USB monitor? http://www.amazon.com/MB168B-15-6-I...8&qid=1402942293&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+mb168b+

I was trying to find out if convertibles can power USB monitors and evidently some convertible devices cannot power a monitor through USB
Surface Pro 3 + ASUS MB168B+ portable monitor = Ultimate Road Warrior Productivity | Microsoft Surface Forums

I have a core i7 lenovo thinkpad yoga.

Could someone test this or does anyone happen to know?

I asked about how to read in the specs to find out and TPCR told me that it doesn't say. Where in the specifications do you look to see if a tablet can power a monitor?

I cannot read 387 pages to search for an answer. Is there a fixed 12.5 FHD panel for this laptop that does not have ghosting/image retention? Or should I look at a 11 or 13 inch laptop/convertible like IdeaPad Yoga 2 instead?

The laptop I wanted to love.

I am the type of person who tends to research things before buying and read many good reviews of the ThinkPad Yoga.

I was looking to replace my old 17” Toshiba laptop and Dell desktop with a device that also would allow me the ability to use a digitizer. The combination of the Yoga and the OneLink seemed to be the ideal choice.

Just before deciding to buy the ThinkPad Yoga I became aware of the image retention issues it faced thanks to

    Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermar... - Lenovo Community

As part of my research I visited a local Staples and ran the checkerboard test on the unit they had and it did exhibit the retention fairly noticeably.

    http://1drv.ms/1vuRMSG

It showed a screen manufacture date of 2013 week 0 and the unit itself had a manufacture date of 12/2013.

    http://1drv.ms/1vuS0cH

Since it was now July and the forums did seem to indicate there was some progress in the correction of the image retention issue I decided to place the order through the Microsoft Store here in Canada (as I was able to get an educational discount) for the i7 (8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD stylus included). I also reasoned I could/would added extended warranty to cover a screen replacement at a later date if required.

I placed the order on July 14th and the unity arrived a day later (they had free expedited shipping). I was outside when it arrived and my wife said something to the effect “your computer is here but the box is all banged up.” I thought she was kidding. Turned out the packing job was very poorly done and the outer box had a corner that was crushed and the inner computer box (Lenovo box) was essentially free to move around inside the bigger box.

    http://1drv.ms/1vuS6ky
    http://1drv.ms/1vuScbM
    http://1drv.ms/1vuShMx
    http://1drv.ms/1vuSnUB
    http://1drv.ms/1vuSq2v

When I first turned on the Yoga I noticed it had brightness around the screen’s edges (almost like light bleed) but disappeared quickly. After the updates I was up and running.

First impressions. This is a very nice little machine. It was very snappy (loads fast, no problem with MS Office, browsing, even did some Camtasia and video rendering). I even appreciated the size. The stylus was nice and I could see myself using it effectively in meetings and for class (I teach). I really liked the locking keyboard when it was in tablet mode!

Then as I started using it more, I started to notice some issues.

Mine did suffer from the image retention problem. It started out with the taskbar icons then became noticeable with browser URL bar. It wasn't bad enough to worry about and if it became worse I would seek warranty replacement. The results of my checkerboard test are below

    http://1drv.ms/1vuSsHV
    http://1drv.ms/1vuSAXO

I then started experiencing intermittent WiFi drops. The unit would suddenly loose connection to the wireless network even if it was less than 1 m from the router. Some days I was solid, no issues. Other times, multiple times an hour. I called Lenovo (and the unit dropped 3 times while I was on the phone with support). Initially the response was the “Wi-Fi is complex and there are many factors that could affect connectivity”. When I explained I had no issues with any of my other wireless devices and I was only 1 m away from the router they offered to change the wireless card on-site one time.

Bluetooth connection also was problematic as I would lose the connection with my mouse but still have Wi-Fi. This was also intermittent. At first I thought it was a mouse issue so I bought a different mouse. More stable connection, but it would still happen.

The internal mic didn’t seem too strong. When I tried to use Camtasia to record the audio came out all garbled. Closer inspection revealed the gain was up to 240 dB – yikes. Backing it down and checking the level indicator in windows showed little movement from zero. An external usb mic worked fine.

Then about 2 weeks after receiving the unit "Blue Screen of Death." 2100 HDD error. Again I call Lenovo. You need to change the SSD. Now things are really worrying me!!

On top of this I have been dealing with an 11 month warranty. Seems Lenovo warranties start when the machines are manufactured. Mine was built on April 26th so it's warranty started in June (there is a grace period), but I actually ordered it 14 July. Another call to Lenovo. Seems if I buy it directly from them 12 months.... Otherwise it is a process to try and change the warranty start date if you can.

So, after 3 weeks the unit has been returned.

Could some of the issues (Wi-Fi and SSD error) be related to the condition of the box, absolutely? Would and exchange resolve these issues, maybe? Am I willing to take the chance at this point on the exchange? Sadly, and I do mean sadly, no.

I am worried about the image retention issue. It is obviously very wide spread and a known issue. I had my unit less than 3 weeks and used it less than 100 hours and noticed it happening. I tried two units (the Staples (different model) and mine) and they both had image retention. If I’m spending the kind of money I did on a computer I expect it to work well and unfortunately this one did not.

Would I return to the ThinkPad Yoga in the future if I had assurances the issues have been corrected, YES.

Sorry if this was already answered... I couldn't find any info.

I can't find any TrackPoint options in the Synaptics ClickPad driver (18.0.7.40) to enable TrackPoint tapping (for left-click and left-double-click). Although I mainly use the TrackPad, I would rather not use the pad for left-clicking when using the TrackPoint button. All the ThinkPads I've owned had a tap setting for the TrackPoint, but not the Yoga S1. Levono says a TrackPoint driver is not needed. Is there any way to get the Yoga's TrackPoint to accept taps?

Image retention is common for low end IPS displays like the Yoga uses. There is nothing that can be done, apart from using a higher quality display.

Could you please tell if you ordered the one with part number 20CDX005US, which i just ordered before looking at your post here? Also, you meant the laptop came with both digitizer enabled screen and digitizer pen? Thanks.

I ordered that model yes. And wouldn't you know that it came with the pen and digitizer..... So I got lucky lol

Side note, does anyone know how to maximize battery life on this, I can only get about 4-5 on balanced and only about 6 on power save mode. Unfortunate really....

5-7 hours is what I got on my Yoga sample as well. It really depends very much on how you use it. Try to prevent scrolling, as it requires immense amounts of CPU power. Try reducing brightness to as low as it is comfortable, which should be quite low on IPS displays. Turn off all unnecessary wireless radios like Bluetooth. And let Windows set itself up and optimize itself if it is still "fresh". (just let it run in idle for a few nights)

Ok today I've had a big problem with my Yoga. It now won't boot. Before this happened I also had the screen image retention issue and the issue where when it goes to sleep it won't wake back up sometimes without pressing the power button or rebooting the machine.

Yesterday I turned on the machine and went to fetch something from another room. When I came back it was on the BIOS screen, I thought that, that was weird, I then tried to save and "Exit" the BIOS but it took me right back to the BIOS. I did a hard reset (held power button for 10 secs.). I restarted and it worked as normal and I used it throughout the day. This morning I used the machine and there were no problems for the 1st hour, I was watching a video when the laptop froze and at the same time the speakers started making a buzz/interference type noise that didn't sound good. I pressed buttons and nothing changed and sound didn't stop so I had to do a hard reset again. I powered the machine backup and it started okay, I then went to watch a video again and the laptop froze again and the screen started jumping/skipping in bits horizontally, pressed buttons and nothing happened, was frozen. I did a hard reset again and left it for 5 minutes.

Now when I turn it on it does not start. The fan comes on for about 2 seconds, turns off and then start again, this happens about 5 times before it just turns off completely. I tried with and without the charger plugged in. I found an video on youtube showing somebody else with the same issue.

I ordered this laptop from the Lenovo website in December and received it in January. I'm trying to log in the Lenovo website to see my account information but I must have forgotten my pw as it won't let me log in, I've tried the reset pw but get the message "A user account with the given name was not found." Below are the 2 boxes you have to fill to reset your password, I've put my email address in both and get the message above.

Lenovo ID (may be your email address) *

    Email address *

What do you think Lenovo will do? I'm not happy but I imagine a refund would be out of the question? Also if I have to send it in for repair I've got allot of my data on there and I have a pw manager that has all my pws to autologin on my login to most of the websites that I use. I wouldn't want there tech or whoever to have access to all my sites etc. then I also have all my dropbox, onedrive and onenote data that I wouldn't want accessed by another but are installed under my user account.

@wg1, same exact thing happened to me last week. It's a failed mainboard. I called tech support, it's still under warranty, they sent a shipping box overnight and within a week, I had the laptop back in my hands. They ended up swapping out the motherboard and a fan for good measure. When it arrived I had corruption errors on the drive (perhaps caused by shipping). I was forced to reformat and reinstall Windows but everything seems ok at the moment. I logged the issue with Lenovo just in case and they said they will replace the drive if the error occurs again.

What kind of warranty did you have? I've just came of the phone to them and they said that I will have to send it back to them at my own cost. I mentioned that I had seen others that have had a box sent to them to return their laptops that have problems. He said that's not the way that it works and that I would have to send it at my own cost and they will pay to send it back. He said that he has only been involved in one case where that happened and I think he said that customer had multiple computers and an open complaint against them. He also mentioned that there would be a diagnostic fee if something was caused by me, which I guess they have to mention. I asked what warranty do I have and he said "carry in", I said ain't all warranties the same in the first year? he said he don't know why others would get boxes sent out.

So now I have to find a box as the box you send won't be sent back. Poor service, first Lenovo product I've bought. Now let me read the email he sent about my return.

Also, what can I do about my pw manager as it auto logs in on my user account, the only account setup on the machine. This means ALL my pws could be exposed to the techs and you can never be too careful with your security details. I've got bank, shopping sites, email passwords there etc that would be freely available when the machine ends up being powered on.

I think the hd will be erased in any case. But why did you set it to auto log into your account even though you claim you can never be too careful with your security details?

    ps.

In US, Lenovo will send you a shipping label so you don't pay anything.

Okay so the UK must be different. Security wise, I'm the only person that used my laptop or had a login, nobody knows my password. I kept on forgetting passwords for some site I din't use much so I looked for a pw manager that is supposed to be safe. I have not changed a setting in the pw manager to make it auto login but when I go to sites I visit it automatically fills in my password details.

Ive bubble wrapped my laptop but I think I'm going to call them to ask them if I can take my hard drive out to either remove it or to backup my data. I'm sure I read in this thread long ago about people replacing the ssd/hdd. Does anybody have info on the best way to remove if they say that it is okay?

EDIT: I got the go ahead to take out my hard drive. At first I just wanted to get data off there and put it back in but then he mentioned retaining it and I jumped onto that option. Can't get safer than that.

My gosh, I've tried to take the screws but they strip really easily. Two of them by the hinge won't come out. One of them is getting stripped quite bad now. Not even the screws are good quality :( . I guess I might have to just leave my hard drive in there. Do you think they will have a problem with me stripping one of the screws?

Does anybody else have a problem with their "A" keys not working? Mine has been finicky out of the box, and it's bad enough that I've contemplated sending it back to Lenovo to get them to check it out under warranty support. I'm a touch typist, and am accustomed to typing long documents while only looking at the screen rarely. With this machine, it's been an error-prone nightmare---lots of missing "A's"! I'd estimate that the "A" key fails to recognize a stroke about 20% of the time.

I also find the trackpad on this machine absolute garbage. Lots of problems with accuracy, and an unbearably loud clacking noise when using the whole-pad click. It was bad enough that I'm using an external mouse whenever possible. With the faulty "A" key, I'm contemplating using the machine in tent mode and using an external keyboard, too. Pretty frustrating for a $1,500 machine.

So anybody had a problem with the side volume button not working? I don't know why but all of a sudden the button feels wierd to press and both volume up and volume down button only reduce volume. I have to use my mouse to raise the volume or use the keyboard keys

Any idea on how to fix this?

And am I the only one who doesn't know what this "ghosting issue" people are talking about. My screen has image retention for sure but apart from that...I don't see any other screen problems.

I just bought a ThinkPad Yoga from the Lenovo Outlet. It didn't mention a digitizer but I took a chance like some of you and it paid off! Specs are i5-4200u (not the greatest but will suffice), 8GB RAM, and128GB SSD (will probably replace). Seeing how many other people got the digitizer from the outlet, I guess it's pretty common for most of the 1080p's to come with it? Battery life is poor though as was mentioned.

I had this issue after removing the HDD. Fixed it by removing the base plate and the HDD and then unscrewing the connector for the HDD. The power button, volume button and screen rotation lock are on the other side of the connector and so had to fiddle around with it until the buttons on the case are pressing through to the buttons on the connector properly. Then just screw it back in making sure you don't overtighten as this make the buttons push against the case.

    Hope that makes sense.

I had to open the base anyway to switch out the M.2 SSD and I believe for cases like that the warranty will still be valid for original components. However, in your case, perhaps you should get it repaired by Lenovo to be safe.

So after a little bit more than 2 months I´ve started to get the image retention problem to the point where it´s actually quite annoying sometimes. I have been running with the color profile that was provided in this thread a while back since day one.
I´m thinking if I should walk down to support with it, Singapore is kind of small and I have international warranty on it.
How long would it usually take to get the screen replaced if I do a walk-in with the laptop? I need it, but I can survive for a day or so if absolutely necessary to fix it.

And I guess I would need to clone my hard drive, as they might do something with that too right?

Is there a list of models that people have bought from the outlet that came with a digitizer (or digitizer capable screen) somewhere in the thread? I really want to pull the trigger on one of these outlet deals but I need the digitizer. I'm specifically looking for an i5 model(or a great deal on an i7..), preferably 8gbs of ram but I'd take four if I could snag a digitizer~in case anyone feels like sharing their model numbers ^_^.

    Thanks guys/girls!

Go Lenovo's Product Specifications Reference page at

    Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) sheets

and snag the latest version of the ThinkPad Tablets & Convertibles (pdf). The current Yoga models are near the bottom. I'm pretty sure that if you buy based on Lenovo's model numbers, you'll get what you want. If the seller won't tell you the exact model number, I'd be wary.

Has someone already sent a "self replaced" hdd to ssd Yoga device back to Lenovo service (warranty) concerning Display or other issues to get repaired? I read some posts ago that there should be no conflict with warranty for self made hdd replacement. Would it be also ok to send it back directly with a replaced hdd to ssd.

Has someone already did this and also got it back with the same drive?
or is the only way to go through Support to replace the hdd back to original hdd....

    I hope for your experiences

    Thank you
