    1. This video shows no mention of reversible click-in. I don't see it in lenovo's promo vid. How do you know?

    2. Will the device power a USB monitor or even work with a wacom cintiq hybrid?

    3. What advantages do you the thinkpad yoga has over the helix 2?

    4. Is it possible to use helix 2 in slight angle mode by wedging something between the screen and keyboard like it is for the yoga?

    5. Can you use this is 180 degree mode?

This video shows exactly the reversible click-in I mean (at 1:40: Lenovo ThinkPad Helix 2: Hands on at IFA 2014 - YouTube). The screen is clicked in the other way around, so that you can use it in Tablet, Stand or Tent mode. No need for Yoga hinges...

The TPY has more performance and a bigger screen. Its also compatible to OneLink Docks (which are used for X1 Carbon 2nd gen, ThinkPad S & E), where the Helix 2 needs an own dock just for this one model.

Yes, there is a 180 degree mode. As shown here: ThinkPad Helix Tour - YouTube Helix 2 has classic ThinkPad hinges like the T440p or many older ThinkPad models.

I just ordered a new Yoga from the outlet store (i5 u4200, 8G, 128g ssd, digitizer pen). I plan to update the SSD to a larger 512g ssd.
I assume this is an older model yoga (20CDS02B00) . Do people have any recommendations on Samsung 840 EVO vs Intel 530?

Should I (or is it even possible) to copy the recovery partition to the new drive? I think I read that the Samsung disk copy software won't copy it. If I keep the original 128G ssd and connect it via an external usb-sata cable, is the recovery partition accessible? I'm not sure how the recovery is done, is it requested at boot time or after windows comes up?

Could I install a mSata drive in the slot normally used for the 16G cache drive when you have the normal hard drive?

Personally I use a 840 EVO 500GB in my Yoga - it seems to work a treat. Has the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

With Samsung Magician, it doesn't clone the recovery partition (at least not in my experience). Maybe there are other programs that can do it, but if I were you,
I'd stick to cloning the drive over and keeping the original one in a safe place so you can swap it back in if something goes wrong.

I think if you connect it with a USB to SATA cable it would just boot to Windows using the original SSD's files rather than open up the recovery partition, but don't quote me on that.

Regarding the secondary SSD connector, it's an M.2 form factor mSATA SSD - not to mention it's quite short at 42mm, which does limit your options.
I've heard this one is a common choice: MyDigitalSSD 128GB Super Cache 2 42mm SATA III 6G M.2 NGFF SSD | FNet HybriDisk Software | My Digital Discount

Thanks for all the answers.. I wasn't sure how one would invoke a recovery even with the original drive installed? If it was through a utility program that knew where the recovery partition resides and wouldn't find it if that drive was on an external usb connector. I didn't see anything in the user guide other than what seemed to be normal windows restore.

Don't buy Samsung EVO just yet, or maybe at all. It has a bug that slows it down:
AnandTech | Samsung Acknowledges the SSD 840 EVO Read Performance Bug - Fix Is on the Way

They say a firmware fix is schduled for 15. october. So don't buy EVOs until we see what kind of fix is released. You can buy for example Crucial MX100 instead.

I see in the outlet store that some yogas have "no Bluetooth" in their specs while others do. I thought the current network card supports Bluetooth. Is there something else besides it that affect Bluetooth support?

I just purchased this laptop and only have one potential problem. Does anybody else have a problem with the frame in the front of the pc (where you rest your hands) being really squeaky? Every time I move my hands around the whole frame squeaks like plastic rubbing together. Should I send it back over this or is it just part of the new case design?

Has anyone else had issues with the airplane mode hotkey (F8) after installing the Windows 8.1 Update (KB2919355)?

After I installed that update, instead of the hotkey toggling airplane mode like I was used to, it took me to the wifi settings screen.

Well I tried to put in a larger ssd and 2 of the 10 screwa stripped and won't come out. Will probably get them out with a screw extractor (unless someone has a better idea)? But where can I get replacements? I called support and they routed me to parts.

As an aside when I told the support person that I was putting in a larger hard drive, she warned me that it might not fit and the screws won't go in! not very tech support!

Found this in the parts inventory:
    •Screw M2 x L5 x D4.6 for the base cover assembly (black, 10)

Is this an industry standard screw size specification?

    -------------
Was able to get the stripped screws out. Now to find a couple cheap replacements. From what I read, the Lenovo parts isn't very helpful to get a couple screws. A complete screw set is $15.
I see Lenovo screw sets for other models on eBay.

So from what I understand, I don't need to watch my battery levels before I recharge with the new type of batterys in these laptops right?

I know not too long ago, it was recommend that you deplete the charge of a bettery completely before recharging and then I heard that you had to make sure to recharge at 20 or 40%, All of this in order to make sure your battery can retain as much charge as it can as if you had bought it yesterday?

I don't want this laptop's battery to start lasting only 4 hours a year after I bought the laptop

I immediately ran windows update and installed updates after getting my yoga, so I'm not sure if an update is affecting the issue.
I am having the IE issue where I can't download and run .exe files. IE renames the file to _exe and then yu have to save it, rename it to replace the underscore and then manually execute it.

I have seen solutions to change IE Options->Security and uncheck Enable Protected Mode, but this does not help. I have a desktop with 8.1 installed and I don't have this problem

    Any ideas Thanks in advance

And does anybody know what FMAPP Application, Lenovo AVFramework Serve, Thinkvantage Active protection, and External Application Support for Optical Mouse is?

FMAPP Application looks like it is related to the audio driver. Lenovo AVFramework Server is related to the webcam driver. Thinkvantage Active Protection monitors your computer for sudden accelerations (dropping it etc) and will stop the hard drive. No idea what the last one is, but is sounds pretty self explanatory.

According to the Startup tab in the Task Manager, they all have a Low impact on the start up time.

In my opinion, unless your start up times do something like double immediately after installing a new program, there's no real reason to go mucking about trying to disable every little thing that adds a tenth of a second to a reboot. Doubly so if you have an SSD.

    Hi all,

I've noticed that the lid (screen/lcd frame) of my new TPY is separating at the top edge -

    Yoga.jpg

You can see the glint of the internal components inside the gap.

Is this common/normal? I'm tossing up simply trying some glue versus getting a warranty repair.

I don't think that's normal. I can slide a fingernail on that seam but not so much as to see any internal material. Not sure how that would normally come part if you ever had to replace the screen if it wen bad. So I would hesitate to use glue.

Can you return to store or is it too late? Was it like that when you got it or did get worse over time? If getting worse I would return or repair.

i already posted this in the "what should i buy" section & awaiting feedback but i also wanna get feedback from you guys, people who actually own a TPY...

i have been considering buying the thinkpad yoga or the new thinkpad yoga 14 as a grad present for myself (finally graduating from college next semester, may have taken me a little bit longer than expected to do it but…) and for work once i find a job post-grad. besides, it seems we’re in a time where tablets reign supreme & i can see why…tablets = save desk space & easier to work in bed (and u can’t go wrong with a thinkpad)

    • is it worth upgrading to an i7 processor? i like to save money where i can
    • when should i buy it? now? to take advantage of lenovo’s thinkpad 22nd anniversary sale (would save me $200 off having an i7 processor & FHD screen options), wait for the holiday season sale, or wait even longer until next year hoping there will be a skylake refresh
    • having a 14” screen (the new thinkpad yoga 14) does defeat the purpose of a tablet, doesn’t it? not to mention the weight…but it comes with a geforce 840M… the new thinkpad yoga 14 almost makes me regret buying the lenovo y410p around this time last year for solely gaming but again, GT755M still outperforms 840M slight

Depends what you plan to be running on this laptop. I thinking unless an i5 is sufficient for most applications so unless you need high gami g or computing power I think the i7 is not necessary. I would go for the 8g memory if possible.

You might want to try the outlet store. Some good deals there. I would just say view it for awhile to get an idea of what configs are popping up and the prices which can change even for the exact model. Also sometimes the same price for 2 models which don't make sense when you compare them.

Also if you plan to get an ssd you may save money buying one with a regular drive and installing your own. 256g ssds are somewhat rare on the site. 8g mem is also somewhat rare but since it is soldered to the board you can't upgrade yourself.

So if I enable the guest account and login, then I can download exe's with no problem. But my admin user id cannot. Any ideas what can cause this? Is it some Lenovo specific setting/software?

Strangely I also have some problems with some sites that use flash video that don't play - I just get a black box. also this flash setting site
Adobe - Flash Player : Settings Manager - Protected Media Settings panel
does not show the flash settings. It works in chrome.

so it seems like something is messing up IE for me. any ideas?

Hi everyone. I just started having this problem recently and wanted to know if anyone else had the same issue.

After returning from sleep, my wifi will not connect to any networks. It will just show that connections are available, but when I select one to connect to, the connection will fail. This is solved with a reboot.

It just started happening. Is this a driver/software issue, or a hardware issue?

    Thanks!

Do you have an Intel 7260AC wifi card? If so, welcome to the club - there are quite a few threads on this. I will note that driver version 16.5.3.6 (the one Windows 8.1 automatically installed) has been working fine for me though (I set it to not allow Windows to turn it off to save power). Thinkpad t440s in this case, though these issues don't seem to be limited to this model.

I was an early TPY user, and after having some serious ghosting issues on my unit, I sold it and mucked about with a Surface Pro 3 for a few months, while the SP3 is a great device, I just can't be without a decent keyboard / trackpoint any longer. I thought I would be fine, but I just find myself not using the SP3 to do anything and returning to my desk when I need some work done, where before on my TPY I could do anything any time.

Anyways, due to my personal issues with SP3 keyboard and pointing capabilities, lackluster performance of core M / design of the helix 2, I am just jumping back into a TPY again, if I have any screen / ghosting issues, I'll be sure to have lenovo fix them right away. Hopefully I'll be one of the lucky ones that gets a good panel. If I do, I can live happily again until a satisfactory TPY refresh happens (if ever).

The best part is, I sold my last TPY for a decent price, and got the killer staples deal for my i7 SP3, which I can sell at a good price judging by ebay market, so I might even come out of this a few bucks ahead, with a higher powered (i7-4600) yoga device.

Question though... does the SSD model of the Yoga come with a 2.5inch ssd? or is it using the M.2.? If so? is there still sata connectors and empty space in the HDD port? and is the SSD version a bit lighter as a result as well?

    EDIT:

just answered my own question, I found this pdf:
    http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/edgebook.pdf

its a great resource for finding the difference in the model numbers when you are purchasing, and the detailed specs of each device.
Turns out lenovo might use a m.2 ssd or they might use a SATA ssd, according to the document. So I'll just have to take a peek and see what they ship mine with. Also in terms of weight, a m.2 ssd weighs on average 5 g, a typical ssd weights 77-100g, and a 2.5 hdd weighs ~115 g. I hope mine gets a m.2 ssd, so I can have some weight savings, and SATA expandability in the future if I deem it useful.

I think all thinkpad yogas have a 2.5" ssd so the MB is compatible with ssd and regular HD. Maybe the confusion is that the models with the regular hd also have the 16g cache m.2 ssd. Note it is short so you can't throw any mSata drive in that slot. See a response to my question about using that connector a few posts back.

I replaced a hd with a ssd in my old vaio and I think the weight difference doesn't matter much when you take into account the weight of the whole machine.

Ps I think the ideapad yoga 2 pro uses m.2 ssd's.

Just got my new TPY, Super happy so far, the colors on the screen seem much more vivid than my first one circa December 2013. I have minor hints of ghosting, very minimal compared to my first TPY though, (this new unit's ghosting is only perceivable when at full brightness along a very small band along the bottom, and running a black / white test pattern (my device was manufactured Aug 2014 and has the SPB2 panel.) I'm going to keep an eye on it to see if it gets any worse as time goes on. So far in normal usage there is no detectable ghosting though, so I can live with this panel assuming it doesn't change over time. So glad to be back on a thinkpad solution :)

Thinkpad yoga has SATA. I found a video on YouTube for removing g the back. I think he swapped the hd also it was in German but no translation needed.

Just be careful you have right screwdriver size M2. They are tight and easy to strip. I ruined 2 and had to use an extraction to drill them out

So that means I can just by a Crucial MX100 slap it in and it will work? is it SATA 2 or 3 and is it faster than mSATA?

And it looks like he can replace the RAM?! I thought that thing was soldered onto the board?

A while back my touch screen was disabled for some reason and I couldn't get it back. This also meant that when the screen was folded back it didn't lock the touch pad as well as disabling the screen rotation function. I finally got around to sending it in for repairs (to also replace the screen for the image retention issue) and after a rather speedy turnaround I got it back yesterday with everything working properly. However, they did install the factory image on my hard drive, which meant I had to go through Windows update and etc again.

Well, after my first set of Windows updates to 8.1, my touch screen was disabled again! At this point I realized that it's probably not a hardware issue but rather a software issue. Has anyone come across this problem and solved it? I don't know which update disabled the touch screen (digitizer pen still works), and I really really don't want to have to send my machine in again. Thanks for the help.

Can you do a restore to a point before the updates just to see if it works again?

Anyone has bought a refurbished one from ebay? I'm curious if there is a higher risk of cosmetic blemishes/screen problems in those.

Some of the 1080 ones in the Outlet go for a good price as well. How is the Linux support in these?

Hey, Just wanted to share some information. If you use Intel XTU to undervolt a bit and also increase the Turbo Boost Power Max to 22 watts instead of 15 watts, you can get some really decent framerates using the Thinkpad Yoga when gaming.. (see especially the second video). If you aren't interested in tweaking anything with Intel XTU, just see the first video to see how the thinkpad yoga i7 compares to the SP3 i7.

Anyone out there looking for further information on how to setup new profiles for the various ArtDock apps, check out this forum:

I've used the info from there as well as a couple other forums to create a profile that works on my Thinkpad Yoga. Please feel free to use, but when it comes to diagnosing issues, please visit the forum above.

Anyone heard of this? Got an email from Lenovo requesting me to return my outlet store Yoga. "contains an asset tag and software image that was not intended for consumer or general use. The product was sold in error "

Contained my order # so I don't think it's a hoax.. Will send me a new comparable model.

Wow that is strange.... Did they send you a prepaid return label? I would double check the return address with Lenovo. With all the data breaches, this might be an interesting scam..... I just picked up a thinkpad yoga from the outlet - great price of $594 for an i7 4600u, 8 gb ram, 256 ssd, 1080p. My first lenovo outlet purchase.

I would be really careful about that. Try asking over in the General Discussions board in Lenovo's own forum before you proceed.

That is a great deal. Was it a refurb or scratch and dent? I've onky seen prices beloved $600 fir scatch and debts or i3s.

Haven't received anything other than the initial email last nite. I called the number out of hours to see what kind if voicemail it had. Will call the 800 support number to check
    Further.

I called lenovo tech support who xferred me to sales and returns. Confirmed it was legitimate. Some special corporate model which was overproduced and slipped into yhe outlet store. Couldn't see any special sw though.

The lady said I would probably get an upgrade for my inconvenience.
