Do folks recommend going with the Centrino Ultra 6300 (with 450 mbps) or the Advanced 6250 + WiMax? Is WiMax picking up in a lot of communities?

Same here...the colors on my U2410 are almost spot on with my W510. The colors look very different on my 8710W, which had panel colors about the same as the W500 I had before.
I seriously think the jarring color change has more to do with the limited panels I've used before. If these are 95% RGB (either A or S), and the lower end panels for the W510 are listed as 60%...then that would make me believe the issue isn't that these are bad or wrong so much as the other things I had were.
Still hoping someone with a color calibrator for the W510 can put up a color profile.
I recently got a PM from SSNova703 asking for some comparisons between my old W500 and the W510. I figure it might be most beneficial if I post them for everyone.
I don't have the W500 in front of me, so I can't give direct comparisons.
Specifically:
-base flex
Not an issue. If anything, I think it may be a little bit better than the W500...but I'd say about equal.
-screen flex
There is some flex...but I don't consider it to be dramatically worse than the W500. The lid isn't as stiff as the magnesium one of the HP 8710W I have...but it's also significantly thinner.
-panels/palm rest flex
MUCH better than the W500. The non-removable palm rest gives it a much more solid feeling. The W500, by the PCMCIA/Expresscard, showed a lot more flex than I liked.
-how it feels when the lid is closed
It's a Thinkpad. It feels nice and solid.
-the latches on the lid
I prefer the latch release on the lid rather than the base, but it seems nice and secure. The only lid latch issue I've had is with my former DV9000 -
I'm not trying to argue with anyone, on what you think you see or don't see, what I'm telling you isn't my opinion, it's a fact.
If you do a little research into wide gamut color space and 8 bit output devices you'll see what I'm talking about.
If you have a wide gamut display and look at something without an embedded icc profile, i.e., 99% of the web, the colors are not the same, period. You might think they are, they might look similar, but they aren't. You don't have to take my word for it do a little research. -
NecessaryEvil Notebook Evangelist
Oh, I have no doubt that things are different.
I'm just curious how much is different because of increased range and represents accuracy in the wide gamut panels, and how much is different because it's wrong.
Hence, someone with a W510 and integrated calibrator: UPLOAD YOUR CALIBRATED PROFILE! -

So I guess there's mostly pro's and some con's when comparing the solidity of the build quality on the W510. I was up in there between the two, as the W500 could be had for less money, while the W510 being new and hopefully improved overall. I admit I was a bit bummed looking at the specs and seeing that the newer model was thicker than the previous, but in the end it's no deal breaker. -
Can I order through spp without holding a single share of IBM or lenovo?

Hello,
First of all, thank you very much for your feedbacks!
I have a T61p and I am looking for a more powerful Thinkpad... but not a noisier one.
Could you tell me if the software TP Fan Control runs on the W510, please?
And same question about RM Clock?
Thanks -
,but its not fair that they didnt mention the possible need for it in everyday life do you agree? -
NecessaryEvil Notebook Evangelist
Actually, I can help you with that...but you gotta send me a profile
I've posted it on my FTP. I kept the software and drivers before wiping it out, so if there's anything else someone needs, let me know. There shouldn't be a login/password required...let me know if this isn't the case.
Personally, I didn't want the integrated calibrator, I'd rather get an external one so I could use it on my W510 screen, my U2410, my Aspire One, my HP 8710W, etc.
Now that I think about it...I wonder if this Huey program can be used on other PCs....the hardware's the same between the Huey and Huey Pro....if I have the Pro software for buying a Thinkpad, I can save some money.
*Update: installed just fine on my wife's Gateway. Looks like I'm going to save some money -

Yeah...I figured having a collection of Windows ISOs out on the FTP might be a bad idea right now.
Sure, I didn't have any licenses up there to go with those ISOs...but still... -

Canadian order placed on 1/27. Just called, estimate ship date is beginning of March. Wow, like with much of us, that'll mean it will have come a month after we ordered it. Not very impressed.

In Power Manager, go to Advanced -> Events -> Lid closed action and see if changing that works. -

here's some card details someone been asking for but i couldn't find his post to quote. -

Power management seems to downclock quite a bit. Not so good, makes compiz choppy. -
If it helps, I found Power Manager a bit flaky when I changed the default setting from Sleep to "Do nothing" - it didn't seem to work immediately. It started working later, perhaps after a reboot, I don't know exactly. -
dumb question:
Say i get the laptop with
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
that means i have 2 2GB dimms in the motherboard. Now 1 month later i want to upgrade to 16 GB
16 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (4 DIMM)
Can i do that by just removing the existing 1067 MHz dimms and buying new 1333 MHx dimms.
thanks -
I am thinking of purchasing a W510 and I was hoping people could comment on the multitouch screen? What experiences have people had with it?

Oh well, maybe the 880M is powerful enough to give a smooth experience in the lowest power level. -
A Blu-Ray drive has been announced. From the tabook:
Ultrabay Enhanced 12.7mm
DVD Burner Ultrabay Enhanced II SATA 43N3294 ann 01/07/10
Blu-ray Reader / DVD Burner Ultrabay Enh 43N3295 ann 01/07/10
Possibly ETA for it is 3/22. List price is $289. Hope this helps whoever was asking about it.

but I'd agree with what someone said on this thread that dvd-and-blue-ray are anachronism tech now days the flash drives are costing cheaper and way smaller with infinite amount of read write plus universal use in cams players and laptops I'rather use bay as additional HDD. if id be person to ask what should be done in current laptop trends i'd say BAN the glossy screens ban 56k modems , and dvd drives and MOVE forward with thinking!!! -

Could you test it, please?
Otherwise for the European users who are interested in the W510, I have seen one on eBay US (HD+, i7-720, 2x2GB PC3-1066, HDD 320GB 7200rpm) at 1450 USD (~1068 with out shipping & VAT). Interesting.
More details here -
though hard drive controller speed was capped on the T61p as i remember, I know that these two things are far apart but you never know
im just thinking even when its on 931 its x4 cores = equivalent of 3.720 MHz or we are talking about using only one core when in saving mode? in any case its still a beast. though like every1 else here Id like to know that I can have 110% when i need it!! -

I think over at thinkpads.com there was a dude who verified that the W510 clocks down the i7 only when using a 90W power supply. Battery and the proper 135W power supply had the system at nominal performance according to CPU benchmarks.

Not when I tested my W510 + i7-820QM. It seemed to top out at 1.6 or 1.73GHz on battery, suggesting that the system disables turbo-boost on battery. That's still better than the locked 1.2GHz that would be occur with an Envy 15 + i7-820QM (or 933MHz with i7-720QM).

my experience tells me that you'd need Panasonic semi rugged instead of the w510 as w510 is not bang-able machine unless in the office environment.
and it looks like excuse to say its because of being slim its unable to provide enough current. if you'd ask some RC model builders they'd probably tell you that its just about quality of the thing.
thing is flat cells most probably are Li-Po (used in eee PCs and alike) and not Li-Ion diffrence is li-po are way better in terms of lasting longer but the drawback was the current they could give out per inch per time frame.
HPs are not very good unless handled with care and being a corporate model and not the retail one. i suppose the envy was hi end Panasonic semi rugged parody. there was a moment they did few nice models in 1024x768 aspec but then all went cheaper at-least judging by whats in EU
so choosing Ibm-Lenovo is a good choice no matter what m8
the balance in ibms---> power-reliability I know some may disagree but im convinced so stay away!
