When you get it, just put it on my FTP site, or rapidshare or something. There's probably quite a few of us wanting it.

Now that I've been home, I've noticed a high pitch whine coming out of the laptop. It doesn't always do it, but it does it enough that I'll be calling in a service request to get it fixed...it drives me insane.

that's probably the cpu whine and there is not much you can do about it. it's luck of draw if it's more or less audible. it does that when the cpu is idling and either in c4state.

you may be able to fix it yourself if it bothers you, you can prevent the cpu to get into c4 state. edit the file PWMPDFV2.INI in the directory c:\program files\thinkpad\utillities

change c4dc=1 to c4dc=0 everywhere. this prevents the cpu from entering c4 when attached to the power supply. save the file and reboot your computer.

if you do the same with c4ac you can also prevent the cpu from entering c4 when running on batteries. but you will get somehwat less battery runtime then, depending on your usage.

It is coming from the CPU, and it does seem to occur when it's idle.

Any particular reason I couldn't have Lenovo replace the offending part anyway?

Where do I get the ICC profile the HueyPro makes? Sure, I'll upload it to your FTP...good idea!

Also, can you guys with the Quadro FX 880M check your nvidia driver version? I'm using the one of the lenovo site, and it's 188.25, but I can't seem to get D3D working on the thing...

Is your display driver the same version that I see on the lenovo site? If not, could you stick it on the FTP as well? I find this pretty frustrating, as the system is working great - I just can't run any 3D applications :|

Anyhow, I have noticed a little whine from the inside of the system as well. It's probably the CPU, and it doesn't bug me as much as some others..

What??? Whine again? Can't they STILL not make chips/boards w/o whine eventually, or at least test them properly?
Whine is the primary reason I'm going to trash my T61p soon in favour of a W510 (so I thought).

Please keep us updated whether they fix/replace your unit.

    maybe this will help

    http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=3516

    and this one

"The solution for my part was extremely simple: it turned out that in the Control panel -> under Power Options I've changed the settings for Monitor -> 'turn off' from 3 hours to NEVER! changed it back to any value but 'Never' put everything back to normal.
I hope it might help someone with similar problem. (tested on HP desk, i7, Vista 64bit)"

Just a quick update - Tried running GPU-Z on this, and the application just crashes on the splash screen...Error log shows "Read from location 00000000 caused an access violation"

I'm actually leaning towards something wrong with the GPU! :(

I just tried it myself and it crashed on the splash screen as well

    Driver issue?

Also last night, when I was watching a movie w/ VLC, the same type of crash happened randomly twice (once like 10 minutes in, the other time near the end of the film)

I had "device lost" in 3 Mark 2006 so i think its a driver so relax and wait for update or something. though I had no problems with GPUZ

You guys could always head over to laptopvideo2go.com and try out some newer Nvidia drivers. You might be able to find something more reliable then what Lenovo has released.

Just go to a computer with a high resulution and change it to the screen resolution you want to check (HD, HD+, FHD). Check your favorite web site and a word document / favorite app to see if you could work with that screen resolution.

For my order (w/ FHD), well I received an email friday at 11PM telling me it is shipped ! Can't track it right now, but I hope it will move during the weekend !

Not great, but better than absolutely nothing. I'm still waiting for a decent video review of this unit... and the on-line "text" reviews are few and far between, though there are a few (and most of these are initial reflections from users).

go to laptops video to go they have the instructions on how to install it its not that straight forward as running the installer and rebooting you need to do it manually. I remember it was a pain with GT 8600 but the gt8600 was a pain by itself lol melted 3 times on me.

I hate to say it, but the guy who didn't like the brightness of his multitouch screen may have a point. My X301 his 300 nits and the W510 multitouch has 242 nits. IMHO, the X301 is barely acceptable in the brightness department (I run it two notches from the top and I don't like my screens too bright as my eyes get tired quickly). I do want to see pics if possible.

Maybe FHD no multitouch (if the ever release it) is the way to go for this first round of configurations.

    Any more details on that?

Right on. My laptop has a 300 nit panel, and I keep that thing on 100%, even in a pitch dark room. My retinas suck, and the more photons I can slam onto those cones and rods, the better.

i agree with that. WHen i had my vanilla t400 high nit panel, i always ran it at 100% even in the dark. Same with my desktop monitor which is rated at 500 nits, and never gets turned below 100%. And amazingly my eyes never really get tired, in fact the brighter the screen is, the easier it is to see things on it.

I wish they would make laptop panels brighter in general, you can always turn the brightness down for people who like it dimmer, but you can't turn it higher than max.

    Preferably front/back/side/lid closed/etc.

Searched through thread but couldn't find anything of use.

For anyone else that wants a look and missed it:

    W500/510 pictures

Would you also recommend this laptop (in this price range) or would there be something more suited for similar use?

Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places - but is there the option of ordering a W510 with a 6-cell battery? At least on the canadian website, the W510 only comes standard with the 9-cell.

It seems all discrete graphics models of the T510 and W510 come standard with the 9-cell, in the U.S. at least. Seems to be the same in Canada.

Dang, that sucks. Well, here's hoping it'll be an option down the line without having to buy one separately. That protruding battery is bugging me. It can take the T510's 6-cell battery from the integrated models, correct?

Also, I know that the non-touch FHD isn't an available option right now, but is it expected to come back at some point? Because I notice the only FHD option on the Canadian website doesn't mention a touch screen at all (15.6" FHD Multi LED w/WW Ant [add $450.00]), although it's priced like one.

Can anyone recall what the price was for the non-touch FHD screen back when it was available?

Honestly, the protruding battery is not bad. At least on my T500, I like my 9-cell battery - in fact, it's quite useful when moving the laptop around when it's on. It's like a grip.

Yes, I would expect the FHD non-touch to return, although it's anyone's guess when that would be.

I believe the screen was +$150.00, but I'm not 100% sure.

I ordered the 6-cell battery as an additional option when I ordered the W510. Not sure if they are waiting for the laptop to ship or if they aren't available, but the order was placed on 1/12 and was delayed until 2/26. A ultrabay SATA in that same order shiped a few weeks ago.

I'm a bit battery nuts, but I have 2 mobile modes. Ultra battery life and daily work mode. I'll use the 9-cell and slice when I need extended life and the 6-cell for day to day use where I have ready access to a plug.

I'm coming from a Sony Z, so the W510 is huge to me. The 6-cell shaves off some of the bulk, so it will be my primary battery.

Zoinks, when you get it all together can you run a test of how long the slice and a 6 cell last together, I'm currently using my X60s and fact that it doesn't have the Drive doesn't bother me at all so it would be nice to have long life on w510 without damaging the aesthetics. ;)

Sure thing. Hope you don't mind waiting until after 3/3 :)

I've got 2x SSD's, the slice, 8GB of RAM and an ultrabay collecting dust. Anticipation is getting the better of me.
