I have placed my order on Feb 18 and
is scheduled to be shipped out on Mar 8.

    The spec is
    720qm
    2gb ram ( i have an extra 2gb )
    128 ssd
    hd+ display

I called the customer service and was told that
FHD display is available by phone order.
(It seems like many of you guys want FHD display)
(It is +250 from HD display, which EPP discount is appliable,
    so basically 212.5 + 25% discount ==> +159.375 from HD,
    127.5 from HD+ display)

    1.
I just wonder if the display is worth the money & delayed shipping.

    2.
Would it display hd+ resolution perfectly fine on FHD display?
    (I mean 1600 900 on hd+ display & FHD display
better on hd+? FHD? or about the same?)

    btw, im in Canada

To be honest after using 1920x1200 for the last few years I can't imagine switching to anything lower. I am even a little hesitant about the 1920x1080 on the FHD

I agree, but it's time to give up on that fight. Everyone's going to 1920x1080 unless you get a professional-grade external monitor.

after reading why- who -and what, I gave up straight away. usability and fashion are different things , but normal folk want the compromise at least that's what I gather from the shifting of industry from  16:10 to 16:9.

Here in the U.S. it's still the first or second week of March. Call them at least once every other day just to validate.

Must be our comeuppance for the Olympics. :p

    I have two questions,

First, why I7-920XM is not popular for folk here? I think a lot of guys here chose 820.
Second, what is slice? Is it the dock? Can anyone give me the link of W510's slice? I am sorry I am a newer here.

The Core i7-920XM is very expensive, for a relatively marginal performance gain - most users have no use for the extra performance, so the large amount of additional money for the upgrade would be wasted.

The slice battery is an additional battery for the new T-series Thinkpads (and the W510) - pictures of one can be found in this thread.

    Thanks a lot!
I ordered a W510 with 920xm cpu...right now, I think the SSD can improve laptop a lot. But I chose the 500G hd. If I ask them to change it, how long will it delay?
I ordered w510 on Jan 21 and the estimate ship day is Mar 1.

There is no exchange of part.

You will have to cancle the current order and place a new order.
And choosing ssd may delay the shipping date.
this you need to check with the sales department.

And I think 920xm is too expensive compared to its performance.
Lots of bench marks show little improvement from 820.

Not only that, but the 920 XM uses 55 watts compared to 45 watts of the 820 QM. That translates to shorter battery life and more heat, for little performance gain.

Most benchmarks seem to show little improvement from the 720 to 820. I would rather spend the money on a SSD or more Ram before the processor upgrades.

    yeah that's why i went for 720.
but lots of people seem to go with 820.

    btw,
Personally I don't know why people are crazy about FHD.

For me, the resolution is too high on 15.6 and
    makes my eyes get tired.

I will have to check the resolution again at local store.

Resolution and size of text are not tightly bound to each other. If you have a higher resolution screen, and you increase the Windows DPI settings, the fonts will actually look smoother and easier on the eyes than a lower resolution screen..

They have displayport which is hdmi compatible with an adapter.

When you look at the HP Envy in store make sure you check the text size. The Envy's I saw all had their default text size at 125%.

Also interesting to note, I did a clean install of Win 7 on my W500 (with 1920x1200 display) and it defaulted to 150%.

Unfortunately, many Windows apps do not support DPI scaling. Those apps will be somewhere between janky and unusable if you change that setting.

Also note that increasing the DPI scaling results in less text content visible on screen, since each character takes a larger percentage of the available pixels.

I think I would say "some" instead of "many", and mostly older ones. This is somewhat of a concern though.

Yes, that would be the obvious side-effect of making things larger. You would see the same effect if you had a lower resolution display, but in that case you wouldn't have the option.

Well had a 2/22 ship date however I was just told today that it will be the 28th. One reason why lenovo is doing so poorly with getting these out is because they were shut down for a full week for chineese new yr. Now that they notice they have a huge demand they have people working double time and extended hours to catch up.

So this could be good news for all.

BTW my order date was 1/16

Also, there apparently aren't enough motherboards.

I just got a call today regarding the technician that's supposed to swap out my motherboard for one that doesn't emit the high pitched whine...and they're backordered.

Also, to the person who posted the ebay enclosure: mine doesn't work. My generic 9.5 and generic 12.7 don't even light up in the W510.

The 9.5 works just fine in the W500 and T400 though.

I actually thought that 125% was too big on my W510's FHD (1920x1080) display. I set it to 100% and it looks better to me.

That must be Canada only. I just called to inquire about the non-multitouch FHD and was told that only options shown online are available. He also said the display isn't expected to be available until mid-March to early April.

I ordered a W510 with multi-touch screen, will I get a pen which is similar like the one for X201T? From the picture of X201T, we can see there is a pen for the screen.

For the multi-touch screen, do they have any protective coating, or will you need to find a screen protector?

Yeah a few pages back there was a guy who claimed he got one and hated it. No details though.

And I'm sure those screens have protective coating. Would be VERY stupid and useless otherwise.

and heres my first post from W510, :)

what can I say... those who talk about resolution of the screen its perfect for me I love it and HD+ would seem grainy to me. thanks goes to a dude who mentioned the 100% text size instead of 120%, 120% looks like the HD+ native 100% i suppose.

now the PC-Dr software called "toolbox" must be removed! it glitches allot.

silly question I will eventually reinstall from scratch but i wondered if I can use the license key provided with my W7 Pro if I'm going to boot from the retail Ver of W7? probably not but maybe someone knows different.

Screen is bright crisp no dead pixels easy to read full brightness is going to be a bit hard on eyes (my eyes) so out of "15"levels I use 11th which is adequate for in room use.

I dunno. I too went to a store last night (Frys) and looked at 15.6" and 18.4" units with HD, HD+ and FHD monitors, the latter being an HP Envy 15. To me, they're all nice screens. I can tell the difference between HD and HD+, but from HD+ to FHD on a 15.6" monitor I don't know that it's worth the wait to (now, maybe, April) hang out and wait for the FHD without multi-touch.

Yes you can actually. Theres a thread in the windows 7 forum called 'free legit win 7 download links' or something similar. It tells you how to backup your license key and restore it to a new install. You actually don't need to buy another copy of win 7. You can download an iso that can be installed from CD or usb, install win 7 and use your backed up key to activate. Its all explained in there.

SECOND of Feb was in all caps because it was going to ship by the 12th of Feb. 12th of Feb rolls around and it gets delayed by over 1 month! UGH! I have seen the issues for that in this thread... but I called and MADE them expedite it. After no response, I called them back about a week later and complained again... Rep told me that she would give me a discount for the inconvenience. I will find out today what that discount will be as she is supposed to email me the response. Will post here when I know more about the discount and YMMV, but it's not my fault that they have shortages on supplies.

PS: Anyone know when the W710 is supposed to be back on the site for purchase?

Update: got the email from Lenovo re: discount

So that puts me down to 2,4xx something! Best of luck with your request to get the discount :)

The processor doesn't down-clock when on batt and on MAX out in power manager (please note that I have done the generic "maxout") meaning its should be possible to make it work the same as from the batt as it would from the "Ghostbusters trap" power brick of 135 w. :D

it does drop out of "warp" of almost 3Ghz when unplugging it from mains power but it holds the in "impulse" which is 1.6 Ghz

    hers some evidence of that...
    WARP(left) NO-WARP(right) ;)

I have submited the 3D mark scores aswell for those interested.

also i didnt have any crashes "device_lost etc after uninstalling the tool bloody box and reverting to 100% dpi.

whine does occure but only occasionally depending on devices connected but not something i would cry about though maybe its just me. I had dell D600 once and that was super whine machine. :)
