Lenovo W520 SHIPPING INFO

Mine finally arrived. The manufacture date on the box indicates it was built 5/4/2011 which is just 3 days after I ordered on 5/1/2011. First shipping status was 5/7/2011. I received it today 5/13/2011. Specs were FHD,2000QM,1x4GB,500GB HDD,3Y-TPP everything else was default ... no SSD (got a 310 80GB arriving today), no extra ram (3x4GB already here), no colorimeter (got an external one on order). It looks like the closer to bare you order it the faster it ships.

Finally got mine. Here are the wait times for me:

Ordered April 14th
Shipped April 29th
Arrived in Canada May 6th (the laptops arrive in Ontario)
Arrived in our hands in BC May 13th.
So around 1 month wait times.

First impressions:

* case is solid and very nice
* the thing looks VERY nice, I was worried about the legacy look of Thinkpads but these look good to me
* keyboard is not to my liking so far, the keys feel too widely spaced
* this thing is WAY thinner and lighter than I thought it would be, given the CPU/GPU specs and the fact it's slightly on the heavier side of the 15.6" scale.


Cons:
* my left mouse button for the trackpoint is a bit wiggly
* the screen does feel pretty weak when you open and close it, it flexes quite a bit
* the upperpart of the screen bezel is quit loose, and wiggles around 1mm when pressed very lightly.

I ordered mine on May 25 and was noticed by email shipped on May 30. I didn’t get tracking #, but get Shipment Ref # instead from Lenovo. The Shipment Ref # doesn’t work in UPS site. I just called my agent. She told me my W520 still in China and it should arrive Canada in June 7.

Do you guys have the idea how long it will take to ship it to Canada?

 

My shipment took about 11 calender days for it to get here.

 

Lots of back and forth trying to get the best possible price... the rep I originally had claimed to have given me the best price so I went ahead with the order. Turns out, it wasn't the best price after talking to a few more reps at the cost of being flagged for "shopping" amongst the reps. Talked to my original rep and proceeded to cancel the original order and go through with a second order given a better quote. Welp, late last night I stumbled upon an even greater deal where it saved me just a little under $100 and the ship date is 5 days earlier! Very interesting as the configuration is exactly the same, yet the ship date and price are better than what the reps gave me. Needless to say I went ahead with that order and will have to cancel the previous and ensure the original is canceled as well. Anyway, here's my configuration:

Grand total after tax, $1,942.62. After canceling the first two orders and placing this order on my own, I'm afraid I am now sales rep-less all in the name of getting the best price. Oh well.

 

My W520 is still at Louisville, KY for the past 23 hours. Does anyone else also have the same Import Scan issue (right now)?

 

Yep same here, last status on mine was Arrival Scan at Louisville at 1:35AM on 6/4

 

Are we in the same batch? That is the same exact time my W520 arrived at Louisville, KY.

 

Just ordered mine today, was quoted that it'll arrive sometime around 6/16

 

Just curious, did you order over the phone or online? Placed an order over the phone last Thursday and was quoted a ship date of the 17th. Canceled that order and placed another over the phone on Friday and was quoted a ship date of the 20th. Change in dates all seem logical, however I then placed a third order late Friday night over the web and was quoted a ship date of the 15th.

Yep, most likely. They got past customs though, the import scan happened around 12pm

Mine has the estimated delivery date of 6/7 again! I can't wait.

Just curious, how long does it usually take to build one of these laptops? If it helps, the specs are in my sig.

 

Build and ship times have a multitude of variables associated with them, but if it helps you, my W520 had pretty much the same specs as yours and took 6 days from order to shipping.

 

Cool! I'm hoping that I get mine as soon as possible, since I can't wait to open it up haha...

I might call Lenovo in a few days or a week to try to get the shipping to go faster, since when I ordered I mentioned that I would really like this laptop before my trip to college for my orientation on the 19th.

 

Well my original order place last Thursday, which was SUPPOSED to be canceled, shipped yesterday... hopefully my final order ships just as fast!

 

I also had 6 days exactly between order confirmed and package shipped. Amazing, considering forecast was for 3 weeks.

 

Holy crap! My first order, placed on the 2nd of June arrived today! Too bad I have to return it, blah!

Mine will be delivered tomorrow and it takes exactly same 11 calendar days to ship from China to Canada. Comparing with original estimated delivery date - June 21, it’s 12 days ahead. It’s not too bad.

Woo! Got an email from Lenovo that my package is being shipped! I'm hoping that I'll see my stuff in the next three days or so.

 

What sort of shipping did you go with?

 

Standard UPS Ground. Nothing special. It's just now coming out of China and I'm hoping that that brown truck will be here soon.

 

On the same "boat" as you... Doubt they're going to deliver on the weekends, so the best is looking like early next week. The wait is killing me!

In the meantime, I've been considering upgrades that I'll make to it with the ~$500 that I saved. Was thinking an extra 12GB RAM and either an 80GB Intel 310 (if they're ever in stock on Newegg lol...) or perhaps a 160GB Intel 320 SSD and Ultrabay caddy off eBay. Don't know which one to get at the moment; on one hand the 310 will be simpler to install and less expensive, yet again, I get better GB/$ on the 320. Bad part about that though is that I'll have to buy a HDD caddy and an external DVD enclosure, so it's overall more money spent. Choices, choices...

 

Did you decide on which brand and speed of RAM to get? I went with the 1x4GB for the system, so I'm not sure if I should go cheap and stick with the slower RAM speed and only get an extra 12GB or replace the 1x4GB and get 16GB of the faster speed.

I'd like to get an SSD myself, but the lack of funds are holding me back for now. Besides it's not as important to me as more RAM!

 

Meh, I think I spoke too soon. I went back to look at Lenovo's shipping page and I found that it's the laptop lock that I ordered that's actually on it's way, not the W520 as i hoped...

I'd just get what RAM is on sale (that's 204-pin 1333Mhz PC10600). I'm thinking of keeping the 4GB stick in the W520 and buying an extra 12GB (so far I'm looking at G.SKILL model numbers F3-10600CL9D-8GBSQ and F3-10600CL95-4GBSQ, which is the 2x4GB pack and a single 4GB stick, respectively) from Newegg, with a total of (76.99 and 35.99) 112.98 and free shipping. I'm sure that there will be another sale on RAM soon, though.

Wow, that G.SKILL ram is about $200 less than the faster RAM! That might just be the answer I was looking for! Any idea if the 4GB sticks that Lenovo supplies are the same exact model as these G.SKILL ones? Another sale on RAM? Are you saying it's gonna get cheaper than $112.98 for these?

 

iirc, Lenovo ships the W520 with Curcial branded RAM. It's overpriced on their website, though the G.SKILL should be the same specs. CAS of 9 and timing being 9-9-9-24 should be the same as the default RAM. If not, the worse that could happen is that one pair of sticks would be running at the lower clock speeds, but I don't thing that you'd notice too much unless you were doing some sort in insane gaming or whatever (in which case, why did you buy a W520? ).

 

I just received my tracking number from Lenovo and it seems that they are only shipping my laptop lock and bot my laptop (total package weight is 0.30kg, so that's an obvious indicator)...

 

Well, I checked Lenovo's order page and they say that my laptop has been sent out of the factory, so I should be sxpecting a tracking number by tomorrow morning it seems

 

When that happened with my status, I contacted them via online chat and they were able to provide me with a tracking number. While too early, you should be able to get some sort of status at the end of the day.

 

I just checked the website and I now have a tracking number for the laptop! Apparently, it's now getting ready to leave Shanghai. My laptop lock, on the other hand, has been sitting in Alaska for the past few hours.

I got caught on the X220 but didn't on the W520. And it can be several days in customs clearing if yours is pulled. My X220 has been sitting waiting for customs for a bit over 3 days in Lexington.
