Do you know if they open up the box when it goes through customs?

My tracking number is being a bit odd... Right now the UPS website shows this:
The separate shipment for my laptop lock, however, seems to be going good:
-
What coincidence (long time lurker here)... My W520 shipment info says:

I couldn't make sense of it until I read your post. -
When I called them, I recall hearing something about the internal tracking at UPS being a bit off. Not sure exactly what's going on, but shipping is apparently unaffected, so I'm sure you're package is fine. We're probably on the same truck
...
-
Please remember if you leave Shanghai by air you will arrive in Anchorage several hours before you leave (Intl Date Line)
-
-
You might know this already, but just thought I would add a little insight that might help. Departure and Arrival scans are not actual scans of the package. They are derived scans that are created by events based on the trailer/container that the package was last seen in. I say that, to say that Departure and Arrival scans can sometimes we a little flaky when it comes to trying to figure out where your package actually is.

I should be looking out for my laptop lock today...

What I really want is the 80GB Intel 310, if they ever come back in stock....! If I end up not able to get it, I might consider something like MyDigitalSSD, though I know nothing about their track record to be honest. Earlier, I was considering moving the HDD to the Ultrabay and getting a 2.5" SSD, though that would mean I'd have to buy a caddy from eBay, and I'm not comfortable with that (nor using PayPal), and credit cards for 18 year olds are complete bull (~20% APR, etc). -
My laptop is getting closer and closer. I have a feeling that I should expect it at around 4:30pm today.

APR ain't a problem if you pay in full -
Yeah, I was told by my rep that I'd get it on the 16th. Getting it one day earlier is a welcome surprise.
For the sale, it was for all notebook/desktop RAM and flashdrives made by Corsair (I forgot about that part). And I just checked Newegg for that Mushkon RAM and all I have to say is, "Dammit!" -
My W520 arrived

Edit: I checked and found that they have restocked, this is almost like the Intel mSATA 80GB drive (these mSATA drives were in and out of stock fast).

The keyboard is AMAZING! No flex whatsoever, the keys have a smooth travel, and they are nearly slient (except for the space bar, which makes a nice "click" sound each tim I hit it). The body feels strong, and the only flex I've noticed is on the middle of the bottom edge of the screen, though I don't worry about it since there won't be any pressure there anyway. The hard drive boots pretty fast, and the FHD display is simply perfect (and very, very bright)! I am extremely happy with this machine, and as soon as I'm done backing up the stock Windows install, I'll install my programs and put my data on the drive to make it personal.
Disclaimer: I'm using this laptop after being use to using my previous laptop, which as you can see in my sig, wasn't very impressive. -

By the way you are new owner of laptop. I have couple questions if you can answer.
Is default software on laptop worth to use? I'm asking because whenever i buy a laptop i format it after 10 mins and install clean windows.
There are many posts in w520 owners thread. I'm too lazy to read that many pagesDo you have a most important things todo when we get laptop?
For example i see many posts about bios etc. I think you are more interested in this w520Thanks for answers
-
ThinkVantage is pretty neat I suppose, though I don't really use it. This is only my second laptop I've owned, and both times I always used the default install of Windows (no clean install) since it was good enough for me.
What I usually do is to first install Firefox (and later upgrade IE to version 9), then security software (MSE and Malwarebytes), then delete bloatware (not too much on Thinkpad, thankfully), and then move my data/apps onto the new computer. However, because I'm waiting to buy a mSATA SSD, I haven't installed any of my programs (I only have browsers and security at the moment), so my laptop is still in a near-OEM condition, OS-wise. -
At last! Received my W520 today
.
Has been exciting playing with it and getting all the right pieces of software on it. Just typing on the keyboard is giving me nostalgic Thinkpad memories from the past... -

any idea how long it takes to clear canadian customs? -
Canadian customs clear in 1 day, and it should be at your house within a day or 2, but the unit usually boards the plane much later than the shipped date. My unit took 11 calendar days to reach my house after shipping, and didn't even enter Canada until 7 days after it was shipped.
-
Have you already got this laptop or are you still waiting like me ? If you have tell me your impressions.
Thanks

Having been a previous Thinkpad owner, I had high expectations (I am very happy). The W520 really is impressive. I don't have an SSD installed yet, but this machine is fast. It took one day to get just the right Lenovo software on there, and the unnecessary stuff out.
The battery life is awesome. I did a stress test on day one. With above average power consumption (a Netflix movie, few you tube videos, and Flash intensive websites), I get about 4 1/2 hours. With power savings mode, I get around 8 1/2 hours (I stopped at about 4-5%). I am sure that with SSD, this could improve a bit.
I love the FHD screen. Went through my Picasa Albums collection and the color reproduction is very good. Lenovo made an error in my order and did not ship the Color Sensor despite me ordering it. But, I am glad they didn't ship it because the display colors are pretty accurate already.
With the standard Microsoft applications, this machine just flies. 8GB is sufficient in every way for the foreseeable future. Netflix and Youtube videos were also stutter free. My other laptop (a four year old Macbook Pro - 15 incher) would have frequent Wireless network connections problems but this machine (with Centrino - Ultimate card) just rocks. To test it further, I took the laptop to the farthest corner of the backyard (about 250 ft) from the access point and the connection was just as smooth and fast.
The keyboard is just superb and the palm rest area is curved so as to not hurt your wrist. My macbook pro made me wear a wrist band due its super sharp edges.
The controls and buttons are all well thought out. I know that folks are ambivalent about the thinklight (as opposed to a backlit keyboard). Since my macbook pro had the latter and it definitely looks cooler, I can say that I prefer lenovo's solution every time because I can have a paper/my draft/scanned notes/magazine/journal etc.. right on/next my keyboard and not have to wake up our kids with the room light needing to be turned on.
Let me know what other questions you had and I will try to answer to the best I can.
If there is one minor con with the appearance, the palm rest area can attract finger prints easily. So keep a lens cleaner solution (or isopropyl alcohol or alternative) around you if you are particular about the machine looking new all the time. -
Thank you for detailed impressions.
I have couple of questions if you have time to spare..
- Are you using default software in factory image or did you install clean version of windows 7?
- If you did clean install why does machine needs it?
- You told you uninstalled sme softwares can you write which softwares are not useful and need to be uninstalled ?
I'm asking because generally i am making clean install on my laptops. I'm just wondering if i need for this too.
Thank so much.

I clean installed the software and downloaded Lenovo Systems Update
I removed the Lenovo Autolock
I removed the Thinkvantage toolbox as it was too much of an annoyance
I removed the Fingerprint software (I will put it back later at another time if I need it; it is a little annoying because it takes about three-four tries to get my fingerprint recognized correctly).
I downloaded the 275.33 nVidia drivers directly from NVIDIA. However clean installation of these gave me problems. So I did a overwriting installation of the drivers provided with the system so that the nVidia settings from the previous version are still retained.
I let the remaining Lenovo tools be intact: these include Rescue and recovery, Systems update, Access connections (mainly because I like its Location profiles solution, where I have created an Office profile, Home profile, and public wireless profile), Power Manager (I love this utility), UltraNav drivers (I felt the driver update improved the sensitivity for me).
