I would argue that you have been SOL from the start. Lenovo hasn't been the most reliable when it comes to the ultrabay GPU as an aftermarket accessory. They have either had problems with providing enough inventory, or problems with shipping out the correct part (650m vs 750m)

Someone recently bought a Y400 ultrabay after being told it was a 750M, then came as a 650M. You could order on the site, and see what comes and send back if needed. I would do it soon since the rumors we all that the 750Ms would come out this month, but I stil think they are shipping the 650M.

First Rep assured me they had 750m y400 ultrabays in stock and that they were the 750m models. I only bought it because of their assurance (he even gave me his Rep ID to use in the purchase LOL). Second rep told me that they didnt have any in stock and they they would be delayed until the end of July. Third rep told me that they had no ETA and that I would have to get a refund because the one that had just shipped to me was 100% a 650m...
Got my refund but im still pissed that Lenovo doesnt have its stuff together on this. All I want to do is pay them money and their entire attitude seems to be that they dont want it? Seriously .
That being said though, I really am in love with my y400, and once I get SLI 750m i'll be in mobile gaming heaven. -
But yea, even with a single GPU, its a 850$ laptop that outperforms anything in its range, and has the same specs as the entry level alienware 14 (which is 1199).

So, after months of waiting and working my butt off, I finally have enough for a Y500/Y400. And... There's NONE in the outlet. Only a Y480, with an i5 and 640M LE, For $100 more than I can spend.
When I look on the Y series on the Lenovo site, all there is are the Y500 and Y510p, no prices or models, only a link to Amazon. What happened to the $800 Y500 I saw the other day?

Refurbed on Ebay for $700. Pretty happy, a little more than I thought I was going to spend, but it's a nice computer.
Hoping I get it this week. -
Just a little tip. -
Also, if it does, would I have to buy an entirely new hybrid drive? Or is the msata a separate little drive that just plugs in?

Can someone recommend a cooling pad? I was looking at the Notepal U3 & the X3.
-
Can anyone confirm if the 750m can be paired with a 755m ultrabay for SLI?
-
Also does any know what the fastest RAM the y400 supports is? 1366, 1600, 1866, 2133MHz? -

Hello guys. I'm a proud owner of lenovo Ideapad Y400 (2013) and i had some few questions about my cpu and gpu performance. Before i begin, my specs are as follows:
GPU: GT 750m
CPU: i7 3630QM
RAM: 8GB 1600mhz
HDD: 1TB
These few days i've been benchmarking my laptop using 3DMark 11 and my score is P2997. I noticed that my physics score is quite low, around 5900-6000.
My GPU score is normal compared to other gt 750m users with the same laptop on 3dmark 11 results. Other users with i7 3630qm seems to get higher scores about 7500-8000 (e.g Asus, clevo, sager, alienware laptops). I googled and i've seen many users which has a similar problem like me with low physics score tend to use throttlestop. So I downloaded throttlestop and keep my cpu running on turbo mode for the next benchmark. I got 7348 for my physics score and nothing changed much for the combined score, still P2987.
Besides benchmarking, i tried running several games such as Saints Row 3, Battlefield 3 and NFS Most Wanted. I noticed when i monitor cpu during gaming using throttlestop(5.0), the cpu multiplier stuck at 24.0X and does not increase to 32x which the turbo boost is supposed to run. My temps for cpu and gpu are normal during gaming, gpu - 68c cpu- 74c.
I dont know whether this problem happens to all y400 users out there or maybe they didn't notice it. Another user with P150em laptop and i7 3820qm has exprienced low physics score due to the laptop not using the turbo boost feature during benchmark and gaming. The thread says that when the gpu is used, the cpu won't use turbo boost feature. You can refer to this link " http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/678961-p150em-low-3dmark11-physics-score-i73820.html ". I feel that i experienced a similar problem like him and would love to find a solution.
In conclusion, i think the lenovo y400 turbo boost is disabled while gpu is used or during gaming. But during idle, normal browsing, watching movie, opening apps which does not require load on GPU, the i7 turbo boost works and throttlestop shows the multiplier increase sometime from x12 to x32 max on all cores. I hope all lenovo users can find out this issue as this is not an acceptable thing when we buy the laptop which we must be getting all the performance and features we're supposed to get, but then we should use a third party software like throttlestop to make turbo boost work during gaming.
Sorry for my fragmented english if there is, im a new user to this forum and im a foreigner. Replies would be greatly appreciatedThanks!

Hello thanks for the reply. I went to intel driver update utility webpage and it says my chipset INF driver version is valid. That's nice to have turbo boost working there.. I noticed y510p at notebookcheck.net review says it has 4700mq turbo boost disabled by Lenovo when GPU is under load or gaming. You can see on the "turbo boost" section on the review. "http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y510p-Notebook.97470.0.html". It says When more than one core is tasked or the GPU is stressed, the clock speed drops to only 2.4 GHz. While this technically cannot be called throttling, it is still rather disappointing.
Anyways, have you tried running gpu intensive games such as BF3 or NFS and monitor the cpu boost? Please let me know.. Thanks! -
Ill post a screenie if it helps -
One more ayyay hehe

I can show you a Wii game if you want, however. -
New, proud owner here.
Picked up a slightly used one locally for $600 with 16gb ram, upgraded wifi with unlocked bios, 650m, 256gb msata M4 ssd and 500gb hdd
Very nice little machine, spending the day finding the stable limits of the GPU -
As a side note, to solve the lack of turbo issue, just running throttlestop took care of the issue for me
-
-
Don't need to turn it on manually, I have just set it to automatically run throttlestop minimized at startup.
-
It's already a known fact that the Y400/Y500 will disable Turbo Boost during simultaneous CPU and GPU loads, such as in 3DMark 11 or games. You know it affects you when your 3DMark 11 physics score drops below 7000 or you fire up a simultaneous CPU and GPU burn test, such as OCCT power supply test or FurMark + Prime95, and the CPU drops down to 2.4 GHz after a while, irrespective of temperatures. If you want full Turbo Boost at all times you need to use ThrottleStop. I can't speak for the Y410p/Y510p since I haven't used one but from the Notebookcheck.net review it sounds like they do the same thing. It's a common practice amongst laptop manufacturers to throttle components instead of designing an adequate cooling system, which is absolutely inexcusable. For example, in this laptop a dual fan design would do wonders for temperatures.

From what it sounds like you do, it seems the only benefit you would get is in synthetic benchmarks.... based on your useage you aren't going to notice a difference in speed or from the extra capacity
Put the money you save into an SSD if you don't have one -
The RAM upgrade will do nothing for your gaming. An SSD would be a much better upgrade. -
I have no idea how to fix it. Ive tried several recovery software and it doesnt work. I dont even get any type of Disk from lenovo when i purchase laptop... Do you have any solution to this? Many thanks for your help btw

It seems the ultrabay fan is on sale again: Y400 Removable Fan S2601 | 0C22229 | Lenovo | (US)

I remember reading the fan was a waste and didn't really do much for air flow. Might want to search here about it.
