I would argue that you have been SOL from the start. Lenovo hasn't been the most reliable when it comes to the ultrabay GPU as an aftermarket accessory. They have either had problems with providing enough inventory, or problems with shipping out the correct part (650m vs 750m)

But the only difference between the mythical y400 ultrabay and y500 one is the size, from what I've heard. But even that doesn't make sense, since the hard drive caddys everyone's been buying fir in both, so why not the ultrabay gpu? Everything else in the laptops is the same. I might attempt to buy the y500 650m ultrabay while they still have them.

Someone recently bought a Y400 ultrabay after being told it was a 750M, then came as a 650M. You could order on the site, and see what comes and send back if needed. I would do it soon since the rumors we all that the 750Ms would come out this month, but I stil think they are shipping the 650M.

So they are actually shipping out the y400 ultrabays listed on their site, despite the reported 4 week wait time?

Check out the "peva3" posts in this thread , #471 mentions faster shipping and #490 is where it was a 650 and not 750. Look back past that to see the story (basically rep assured it was the 750, shipping got bumped up, turns out it was the 650).

    This is exactly what happened.

First Rep assured me they had 750m y400 ultrabays in stock and that they were the 750m models. I only bought it because of their assurance (he even gave me his Rep ID to use in the purchase LOL). Second rep told me that they didnt have any in stock and they they would be delayed until the end of July. Third rep told me that they had no ETA and that I would have to get a refund because the one that had just shipped to me was 100% a 650m...

Got my refund but im still pissed that Lenovo doesnt have its stuff together on this. All I want to do is pay them money and their entire attitude seems to be that they dont want it? Seriously .

That being said though, I really am in love with my y400, and once I get SLI 750m i'll be in mobile gaming heaven.

I called 'novo yesterday and they said you have to wait till august to get the 750m bays for the 14 inchers.

But yea, even with a single GPU, its a 850$ laptop that outperforms anything in its range, and has the same specs as the entry level alienware 14 (which is 1199).

See my personal review thread for more info.

Yea, the single gpu hasn't held me back at all, given the overclocking headroom it has. I'm only concerned about getting the 650m ultrabay before they go extinct, so I can prolong the life/performance for quite a bit longer.

So, after months of waiting and working my butt off, I finally have enough for a Y500/Y400. And... There's NONE in the outlet. Only a Y480, with an i5 and 640M LE, For $100 more than I can spend.

When I look on the Y series on the Lenovo site, all there is are the Y500 and Y510p, no prices or models, only a link to Amazon. What happened to the $800 Y500 I saw the other day?

Anti Glare models are discontinued. Even if the website says Anti-Glare, you will still get a Glossy screen. That's what happened to me, anyways.

Nice. Make sure yours comes with an Msata apdater once you recieve it, so you will be able to add some SSD performace later on in the future.

How can i tell if it does or not? I'm new to the component side of things. Is it something I can buy and add to it if it doesn't have it?

Also, if it does, would I have to buy an entirely new hybrid drive? Or is the msata a separate little drive that just plugs in?

Also does any know what the fastest RAM the y400 supports is? 1366, 1600, 1866, 2133MHz?

Hello guys. I'm a proud owner of lenovo Ideapad Y400 (2013) and i had some few questions about my cpu and gpu performance. Before i begin, my specs are as follows:
    GPU: GT 750m
    CPU: i7 3630QM
    RAM: 8GB 1600mhz
    HDD: 1TB

These few days i've been benchmarking my laptop using 3DMark 11 and my score is P2997. I noticed that my physics score is quite low, around 5900-6000.
My GPU score is normal compared to other gt 750m users with the same laptop on 3dmark 11 results. Other users with i7 3630qm seems to get higher scores about 7500-8000 (e.g Asus, clevo, sager, alienware laptops). I googled and i've seen many users which has a similar problem like me with low physics score tend to use throttlestop. So I downloaded throttlestop and keep my cpu running on turbo mode for the next benchmark. I got 7348 for my physics score and nothing changed much for the combined score, still P2987.

Besides benchmarking, i tried running several games such as Saints Row 3, Battlefield 3 and NFS Most Wanted. I noticed when i monitor cpu during gaming using throttlestop(5.0), the cpu multiplier stuck at 24.0X and does not increase to 32x which the turbo boost is supposed to run. My temps for cpu and gpu are normal during gaming, gpu - 68c cpu- 74c.

I dont know whether this problem happens to all y400 users out there or maybe they didn't notice it. Another user with P150em laptop and i7 3820qm has exprienced low physics score due to the laptop not using the turbo boost feature during benchmark and gaming. The thread says that when the gpu is used, the cpu won't use turbo boost feature. You can refer to this link " http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/678961-p150em-low-3dmark11-physics-score-i73820.html ". I feel that i experienced a similar problem like him and would love to find a solution.

In conclusion, i think the lenovo y400 turbo boost is disabled while gpu is used or during gaming. But during idle, normal browsing, watching movie, opening apps which does not require load on GPU, the i7 turbo boost works and throttlestop shows the multiplier increase sometime from x12 to x32 max on all cores. I hope all lenovo users can find out this issue as this is not an acceptable thing when we buy the laptop which we must be getting all the performance and features we're supposed to get, but then we should use a third party software like throttlestop to make turbo boost work during gaming.

Sorry for my fragmented english if there is, im a new user to this forum and im a foreigner. Replies would be greatly appreciated :D Thanks!

I dont know about you, but Turbo works fine on my Y410P, when im playing Emulators the frequency easily shoots up to 3.3ghz. Try updating your chipset drivers, that may help.

Hello thanks for the reply. I went to intel driver update utility webpage and it says my chipset INF driver version is valid. That's nice to have turbo boost working there.. I noticed y510p at notebookcheck.net review says it has 4700mq turbo boost disabled by Lenovo when GPU is under load or gaming. You can see on the "turbo boost" section on the review. "http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y510p-Notebook.97470.0.html". It says When more than one core is tasked or the GPU is stressed, the clock speed drops to only 2.4 GHz. While this technically cannot be called throttling, it is still rather disappointing.
Anyways, have you tried running gpu intensive games such as BF3 or NFS and monitor the cpu boost? Please let me know.. Thanks! :)

Hey sorry for the long reply, ive been busy during these days. Aww thats good then. I wish mine could just run the same way automatically like urs did there. I know throttlestop will do the boost anytime but i jst feel unfair as a customer if turbo needs to be turned on manually by user duringg gaming. And also, i wondered why notebookcheck review also says that y510p has turbo boost disabled during gaming and when gpu is stressed buy it'll work normally when doing non gpu intensive task/apps. Maybe other y400 users can try monitor the cpu using throttlestop when playing games( after 5-10 mins of gameplay) and see if the multiplier is not locked at 24x. Thankyou!

It's already a known fact that the Y400/Y500 will disable Turbo Boost during simultaneous CPU and GPU loads, such as in 3DMark 11 or games. You know it affects you when your 3DMark 11 physics score drops below 7000 or you fire up a simultaneous CPU and GPU burn test, such as OCCT power supply test or FurMark + Prime95, and the CPU drops down to 2.4 GHz after a while, irrespective of temperatures. If you want full Turbo Boost at all times you need to use ThrottleStop. I can't speak for the Y410p/Y510p since I haven't used one but from the Notebookcheck.net review it sounds like they do the same thing. It's a common practice amongst laptop manufacturers to throttle components instead of designing an adequate cooling system, which is absolutely inexcusable. For example, in this laptop a dual fan design would do wonders for temperatures.

Hey thanks for the useful reply. Looks like its the same for all y400/500 laptops then. Sad .. Seems like Throttlestop is the only way. Lastly, can any1 recommend me which one should i go for upgrading ram, 16gb 1600mhz cl10 or 8gb 1866mhz cl10. Which one can really improve my gaming performance from my current 8gb 1600mhz cl11? i use my laptop mostly for browsing, gaming and office works.. Thanks..

From what it sounds like you do, it seems the only benefit you would get is in synthetic benchmarks.... based on your useage you aren't going to notice a difference in speed or from the extra capacity

Put the money you save into an SSD if you don't have one

Throttling affects a lot of other laptops, not just this one. Just be glad that ThrottleStop solves the problem; it could be a lot worse. One thing to keep in my mind is that you may need to repaste and/or clean out the fans often if you have the i7, as it is prone to overheating when unthrottled. Lenovo set the thermal shutdown temperature on this laptop very low at 105C and there seems to be no way to override that.

The RAM upgrade will do nothing for your gaming. An SSD would be a much better upgrade.

Alright then. Cuz i was wondering if my cl11 1600mhz is a bit slow, maybe upgrading to a cl10 with 1866mhz can increase 1-5 fps and boost task speeds. About ssd, i was planning to add a 256gb msata and re install the win8os on the msata but my recovery partition seems to be damaged cuz i have resized the ps partition. I cant refresh, reset and reinstall my os :( I have no idea how to fix it. Ive tried several recovery software and it doesnt work. I dont even get any type of Disk from lenovo when i purchase laptop... Do you have any solution to this? Many thanks for your help btw :)

I remember reading the fan was a waste and didn't really do much for air flow. Might want to search here about it.

If it's possible, could you try it? I have a Y410p and Dolphin throttles for me. I can upload a screenshot if you want.

Sorry for being off topic, I googled this issue and found this thread.
