20 seconds is pretty good, but not near what i believe it should be.

i have the 500GB 7200RPM hdd model with NO SSD and my boot up times for the past 6 boot ups has been 25-26 seconds. one time it was 33 secs but after i optimized it, it went back down to 26.

with a ssd i would figure you be atleast in the teens. lenovo advertised 10 secs i figured you could atleast get 15

12 to 17 sec boot time on Intel SSD 80Gb. 12 sec no antivirus, 15-17 sec with AV and some gadgets. Anyhow, it's fast! (Canadian y470, i7, 8GB RAM, fresh install).

PS: updated software (2011-06-27) on Z575 download drivers page for Lenovo EE Boot Optimizer, Lenovo OneKey Recovery, Lenovo Onekey Theater and SRS Premium Sound.

    How's the contrast?

Fill the screen with black. Does it look mostly dark and uniform, or grayish and inconsistently-filled?

The blacks pretty good although nothing spectacular, I believe LG panels may have better blacks and contrast but Samsung panels in general usually have the most natural looking colors and sharpness.

Aside from this both LG and Samsung panels maybe a bit more reliable than AUO (China factory) panels.

Using OneKey Home Theater on Movie mode the Samsung panel looks almost perfect in terms of blacks, contrast, brightness and colors. I have my back-light set at 9 when plugged in and 7 when on battery.

I used to do this with my mATX form factor single core AMD Desktop about 4-5 years ago during the summer months. I would put the ice on top of the case and it would drop the temp 5-10 degrees. I also used to leave the case open and have a regular fan blowing into it. Surprisingly, the machine still works.

Not sure if you mentioned this earlier, but how do you get such fast boot speeds? Is there anything you do? I have the 500GB 7200RPM HDD too, but I get around 1min for my boot time. I do, however, have a custom theme installed on my Windows 7, but I don't think that affects boot times, as you're just modifying the system files.

Is there any sort of process or something you disabled on startup to make your computer boot up faster?

    Thanks!

really reporting in on the headphone static issue:

As I said earlier, I had issues with blue screens in NBA 2K11 on my i7 Y470 and I ended up sending it into the depot for repair. They diagnosed it as a motherboard issue and replaced the motherboard. Got it back last Friday. Its been able to run everything I've thrown at it nicely. I got at least 5 hours + more on the plane the other day without even going on powersave mode or anything.

ABOUT THE HEADPHONE STATIC: I had it before sending it in but its gone now. I'm guessing its either a motherboard issue since that's what was replaced. I'm currently using Skullcandy inear headphones fyi.

Other notes: My screen is a Samsung and it's been amazing since day 1. I've always thought it looked great and haven't had any fading or dead pixels. This laptop is an amazing value for 836 (final price, no tax, i7, 8GB, 750 HD, Blueray). When I got it back, I did a clean install and kept the one key recovery. I'm planning on waiting for the Intel Paint Creek and then will move the OS, programs, etc. over to that. I'm planning on trying to create a recovery partition on the SSD much like the one key recovery on the main HD, then re-partitioning the 750GB HDD so that I can use the full 750GB.

What other SSDs are people using? Any recommendations? Should I wait for Paint Creek? Any new info on that?

Also, does anyone have experience partitioning the SSD and creating the recovery partition as Lenovo does on it?

tl;dr - Had to send in my laptop to get MB fixed, got audio fixed as bonus, have questions, super happy about purchase even with getting a defective unit the first time.

I have a problem with my y470 with media players skipping songs randomly. Sometimes the entire song will play sometimes it'll skip to the next song within a few seconds and sometimes it'll skip halfway. It's random and I haven't really been able to find a solution anywhere else either.

Haha, I remember when I found out that feature existed. I tried it for all of 10 seconds before deciding it was the most unresponsive thing in the world. The premise is that you "clap" or tap a number of times and it takes that as a command to skip ahead or pause or play. But it never works.

uninstall games (pre-loaded games suck. pirate ftw)
uninstall veriface (security program that uses the webcam to read your face. takes forever to load and slows the comp down at start up)
uinstall youcam (looks like a program to turn the webcam on and just take pictures of yourself with themed backgrounds or whatnot)
uninstall oovoo (webcam program much like Skype)
uninstall telephony (don't know what this is but i uninstalled it. some telephone device for the computer? idk but uninstall it)

power2go is a burning program to burn dvds and cds
onekey recovery is something lenovo built into the laptop to help recover your computer when it messes up. no need for a recovery dvd, there is a small button next to the power on button. that is the "onekey recovery"

Hey guys, I just got my 470 in the mail but I havent set it up yet, and I was going thru this thread to prepare myself for any of the potential problems..so I have a couple of questions..

Is the headphone static problem only for 570's or is it present on 470's as well? There is no official fix for that is there?

I understand after reading some of the posts that the srs premium surround sound switches from music back to movie after a restart...is that happening with all the 470 models? if you set the One-Key theater to intelligent mode does that leave the 'music' option as default? I think most people here prefer the movie mode, correct?

Also, I plan on setting my energy options to 'best battery health' but I read that it somehow switches to the 'optimize battery health' after a restart, is there a fix to that yet?

In regards to the GPU switch, do you only use Nvida when playing games? How about for watching movies/videos?

Another question: How often do you guys use the thermal management button? Is it something that you find useful? Do you tend to just keep it on standard mode? In what situations do you switch between the different modes?

    Thanks

And I think PC3-8500 is typo... 8500 is only 1066mhz

There is no PC3-8500 DDR3 @ 1333MHz and is the reason for confusion

    This looks correct!

    This should be PC3-10600

I think it's present on both... but not all laptops suffer from static... mine doesn't have any static...

The SRS switches to movie if you leave it on movie mode... I personally leave it on Intelligent and it switches to music everytime I play a song on itunes... I personally only use movie mode when watching videos, so Intelligent mode is perfect for me...

Also, I posted some color correction settings in this thread that should give the screen much better color on normal mode.

I don't know if there's a fix for the battery health issue yet... I haven't updated my drivers

I personally only turn the GPU on if I play a game... The Intel GPU shoul play videos without any issues... and makes the battery last longer... the Nvidia card is a drainer... I have used both for youtube video and with the nvidia card, battery life was like 1:30 vs 3-4 on the intel GPU.

So far... I've left the cooling management on standard... but that's cause I keep forgetting to switch to cool whenever I play games...

    @ veni001

Both DDR3-1333/PC3-10600 and DDR3-1333/PC3-10666 are compatible with the Y470/Y570. They both running at DDR3 1333Mhz, some will tell you it's the same but the theory is DDR3-1333/PC3-10666 will provide a bit of a higher bandwidth.

As for DDR3-1333/PC3-10660, I've never heard of this one before.

    @ achieve1

Have you updated Windows to the latest updates?

Sounds like a software issue either with Windows or Lenovo software issue.

If you cannot find a solution to your problem it's highly recommended that you contact Lenovo or check Lenovo's forum to see if there's a solution there.

I just wanted to know if there are solutions to those problems yet so that I don't have to worry about searching for an answer..thanks

so intelligent mode will automatically detect what kind of file you are playing, and adjust the settings based on that? So if I have a video file open on VLC player, it will go into movie mode?

and as for those color correction settings, that's only if I leave it on normal mode correct?, it doesn't apply to intelligent mode?

updating which drivers would be beneficial for the battery health issue? I'm not planning on updating any of the drivers except Nvidia for now. However, if the problem with the battery health does exist within my y470, which driver should I try and install?

    thanks a lot.

Don't know if intelligent mode will detect VLC... I use WMP with CCCP codec pack, and it detects video automatically...

The color correction is for whenever the screen isn't in movie or picture mode... I find the movie mode way to saturated for everyday use, hence why I have intelligent mode on so it only activates movie mode when I play a video...

As for the battery drivers... like I said... I have not updated my Power management software to see if they fixed it... but at the moment is not something that bothers me...

Yes, if you full screen it. I use VLC and KMP player. I also use the latest drivers.

@Luis, don't worry about not using cool fan option when gaming. I've used real temp to compare cool vs. standard temps and there is not a significant difference.

Will everyone with an i7-2630QM version Y470/Y570 write a request to Lenovo to bring this to their attention faster? The BIOS is encryted and impossible to edit with EzH2O BIOS editor and I'm not about to blindly edit with HEXeditor.

Be sure to install both NVIDIA and Intel drivers from their websites, the Lenovo versions are far out of date, chances are that a newer laptop shipped more recently may even have newer drivers than what is listed on the site. For example my PC has 2.06 BIOS and the 2.05 is the only one on the website. The US version of Lenovo's download page is neglected for us from the USA.

the average user doesn't even know what that's for. well i don't know what it's for, so i can't say its worth calling lenovo and complaining to them.

and even if you tell me what its for, i doubt i would ever need to go into it to do anything.

maybe that's why they disabled it? idk

Hey guys, I just received my Lenovo Y570 and I'am loving it!

I played Crysis 1 and I played it on max settings with little to no lag!

You can try a request here http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/7033-Insyde-bios-mod-requests .Insyde bios mod requests. - Page 810[/url] .It's a very active community for modders and I'm sure that you'll have your answers. Also please be aware about the modding, especially be sure that you have a safe getaway if the things goes wrong (bad BIOS flash + impossible recovery = void warranty).
PS: report back if there will be an working unlocked BIOS :)!
PPS: to be safe = there are some infos regarding insyde recovery - if something goes wrong, it's said that you can boot with WIN key + K, or B, or Q...or... pressed and an USB stick with a recovery BIOS on it (PIQY0.bin). Anyhow, if you need more infos, PM me.
    Good luck!
