After further threads and testing for myself, i realize fps drops a bit on battery ...at highest, 10 fps is the highest drop but my games are still smooth..there is no fix for this issue yet from what I am reading...According to a few threads, it's hard coded into the gpu for it's powerdraw..so unless our batteries can hold as much as power as an AC power source, the fps will drop or throttle...there are some temporary solutions but the issue still happens..some say BIOS but i can't find a setting that will helps us. A lot of laptops have this issue.

    idimOE,
I don't see any GT 500M, or GT 555M graphic cards listed for the Y470 on the Lenovo site. AFAIK, the Y470 only comes with a GT 550M. Double check your specs.

Also, if you "already ordered", and had your credit card charged, you may want to leave it alone. Lenovo is not very adaptive to changes in your order, and you will only create havoc for yourself. What you think is only an "upgrade" for Lenovo, may turn out to be a nightmare for you.

So I guess I would vote no. It isn't worth the time, money, or hassle, to get what you perceive to be a "10% boost in performance".

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Since you havent gotten any answers from any y470'ers, ill say that i connect my y570 to an external display via VGA daily and I have no issues.

Have you checked the Nvidia settings in Nvidia Control Panel, there's a Power Management option in there somewhere under "Manage 3d settings".

I'm really on the fence with this laptop. Here are a couple of questions for you y470/y570 owners.

    - Keyboard, thoughts on it? Do you like it? How does it compare with the y460p keyboard? How does it to compare to the macbook pro (for my wife's sake)

    - How are drivers working out on these machines? Lenovo has had issues in the past, like every manufacturer, with drivers at times and I've been bitten by this bug. Any thoughts/complaints on this front?

    - Overall durability of the externals, how are they? The hinges, the screen flex, buttons above the keyboard, what is the overall feel and durability of these pieces in your experience/opinion.

I'm looking at dropping anywhere from $699 - $799 on the y470 for my wife as a replacement to her 5 year old macbook. Any thoughts or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Keyboard is ok. Presonally I like it.

Drivers are . All this nvidia optimus thing is very buggy and slow.

Overall durability seems pretty good to me.

I'd not recommend to buy it, because optimus is awful.

Hmmm... thanks for the feedback. I wonder if the y460p in their outlet center would be better then.

    $790 for i7-2630qm, 8GB ram, 500 GB @ 7200, blu-ray, and a radeon HD 6550M.

Lenovo Outlet - IdeaPad Y460p Refurbished - Discounted Laptops, Cheap Laptops, Refurbished Laptops, Discounted Desktops, Cheap Desktops, Refurbished Desktops

Without the blu-ray it's $726. I have had poor experiences with the AMD video drivers in the past, so I a little more than disappointed to hear that optimus is buggy and poor. That might make it a deal breaker, as I want something my wife can use for heavy video/graphic editing without having to mess with drivers and crashes, etc.

What do others have to say?

Hello all. I just recently bough my Y570, not older than 3 weeks. CPU i7, 8 Gb RAM, 750Gb HDD, nV GT555m VGA. I have a strange feeling, probably it is normal, but for me is strange. When the cooler is working, it feels like it getting the air from the back of the laptop, where the hole is, and from the upper part of the laptop, where the keyboard is. I can feel the airflow between my fingers when i' m using the left part of the keyboard (WASD zone). Any ideas why is this working this way, shouldn't be some layer between the cooling part of the system and keyboard to prevent this?
    Thank you.

Edit: I would like to ask somebody to test his/her product. Probably the "problem" is normal.

Just wanted to chime in here, I have had absolutely no issue with Optimus at all. Tried probably 20+ games on here. I don't really understand how some people are having issues with Optimus because we all have the same Hardware/Software...

I returned a Dell XPS 15 because it had BSOD issues and this is a much better laptop. I have had no driver issues, the keyboard is good, build quality is good, and is a GREAT looking laptop. After having 3 different Dell laptops, I am a Lenovo convert. Love my Y570!!!!

    what are you issues?

these are the latest drivers for the y570, see if that helps..create a restore point before you install it and make sure the optimus switch is on..

    NVIDIA DRIVERS 285.62 WHQL

p.s. I have a Y470 so I don't know what your results will be from installing this

I have updated both my graphics card from the official webpage (Intel, nVidia), and works perfectly. I made a little research and the nVidia driver version 280.26 (current for 555m) contains the Optimus features. Should work perfectly, at least on my Y570 it's working. Yes of course, everything set to high performance, maximum battery usage and stuff'.
    Hope it helps.

Ps. Any airflow on your keyboard?

Edit> I see there is a new nVidia driver version. I did not tried yet.

    Graphics: 6.3
    Gaming graphics: 6.7
i thought i would get at least 7, i also had issues with gothic 4
on 20-25FPS on 1366x768 is it normal?

Thank you for your post, yes, the fan sound is well, how to say, not so silent when the CPU is under heavy load. I also noticed airflow under the WASD zone on the left part of the keyboard. It seem it is normal, but anyway i will do some research in the future.

I have one 100 GB partition from 750 Gb for OS, and programs. Don't have SSD experience yet, but i suppose if you got the OS CD, and the driver CD you can install on SSD the programs without problem.
When i got the laptop my fist task was a clean format, including the reserved OEM partition, i found the programs on the web easily. Except OS.
Before this i used a custom build (built by myself) desktop PC, with Realtek sound management, and driver. The static noise was present there, and on this device too. When i plug in a headphone, an i don't play any music, there is some noise. Like if the integrated circuits where talking in the system. I think this is normal. Just play some music and the noise is gone.

Sorry I didn't read through all 193 pages, but I'm currently looking for a new laptop.

Choices are the y470, msi x460dx, or the acer 3830tg/4830tg

I dropped by my local store and they only had the acers for display, and I wasn't too fond of the design or feel. They had some other lenovos such as the z570 and I really like the keyboard feel. Honestly the keyboard alone made me want to buy a lenovo. Are the keyboards on the y470s just as good?

Also, are there any known problems with the y470? (such as throttling on the acers)

    Thanks!

    It takes 2 DVD's

After restoring with the DVD's it automatically installs the recovery software in a separate partition.

You should save all the drivers that are in the HDD's separate partition... they may be useful in the future.

Hi everyone wondering if someone can help me or point me to a forum where someone could..

I moved my entire audio collection from my old laptop over to my Y570 and attempted to play songs in iTunes it repeatedly on the majority of songs skips to the next track at a random point throughout the song. This happens on 90% of songs tested.

This is not the 20 second preview setting in iTunes as it has skipped the same song at 5 seconds or 45 or even 2 mins in. I then tried the songs in Windows Media Player Classic same thing, and again in Windows Media Player 12. However from a few tests QuickTime seems to play songs fine though with no skipping issues - tested a full album in Quick Time and no skips, in every other app on my machine it does :(

I updated the Renesas audio driver and tried the CCCP codec pack, then removed it and installed the basic K-Lite codec pack to no avail..

If anyone knows what may be causing this please let me know! It must be software related if Quicktime is fine...

    Thx in advance.

    Hello,

I am new to the forum and have a question for owners of y470s and y570s. I really appreciate any answers as they will help me make a decision. I am planning on buying one of these Lenovo models and hoping to play "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" on it.

I have been consistently browsing the outlet and wondering if anyone has any experience buying from this section of the Lenovo website?
The prices are great, just wondering if the computers arrive in the condition they supposed to?

Also, I was wondering if someone could post how well Skyrim runs on these models once the game is released (assuming one of you plays the game on one of these models)? Being able to play this game at fairly good graphics and FPS is important to me.

Another question- My previous laptop had very bad overheating problems and thus I am terrified of my new laptop having similar issues. What is the most recent consensus on the overheating issue on these two models?

Thanks a lot to those of you who respond. I appreciate it.

Hello all! I just bought a Y570 this past month, and was looking to overclock it for use with Starcraft2.
Last night I pushed it to 822 gpu clock, and was peaking at 77frames and 69-71 degrees on the gpu.

What is known about the 555M card? How much overclocking can it take? Seems cold from what I've read, but what is 'okay' temperature for the cpu/gpu? Anything I need to worry about the internal fan(s)?

My hopes are to get Sc2 to a sustainable 55-60 frames (and then somehow figure out how to lock it to 60 max). Right now I'm averaging high 37-55 and highest spike was 77.

Nvidia system tools with cpu/gpu temp control currently set to 70/80

I have msi afterburner as well, but was using nvidia tools for the overclock last night

{edit} How hot can the y570 go tho? My old HP dv5 could cook practically eggs on the keyboard... lol

I overclocked the gpu: gpu clock 830, mem 865,shader 1660 using msi after burner, in full load(played crysis 2 about an hour) the gpu was around 70-75C not to bad, but as you can see it is light overclock, maybe tomorrow i will continue with it.

I'm not too happy. Bought a Y570 about 2 months ago. Was gaming on it and it started to stutter, then crash. Now every time the video card is used it crashes. Gives me a kernel power error and an nvidia driver error. I am pretty sure the video card is toast as the laptop works just fine when I switch the video card off. The second a program tries to use it.. blue screen.

I have tried a ton of different nvidia drivers, reformatted and installed.. there is nothing that I have found to fix it, but a kernel power error doesn't sound like a software issue to me.

My y470 comes in tomorrow! I had a few questions that havent been addressed yet. Just bare with me, b/c I'm definitely a noob.

My y470 comes with the new 2670qm processor. Both Intel and CPU World list the processor as being able to handle up to 16GB of ram, yet on the Lenovo PDF of tech specs it states "Up to 8GB" only.

So can it handle 16 GB? I realize there are only 2 slots available, but 8GB ram sticks will eventually become standard. Is the chipset the limiting factor here? Speaking of ram, Lenovo also lists it coming with PC3-8500 @ 1333 MHZ. I thought that only PC3-10600 was at 1333 MHZ ( DDR3 SDRAM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). So what kind of ram does it come with anyhow?

PS: To further prove my point, a few other laptops with the 2670qm come with 16GB of ram as standard:

    1. Newegg.com - MSI G Series GT780DXR-200US Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 17.3" 16GB Memory DDR3 1.5TB HDD 7200rpm Blu-Ray Burner NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M

    2. Newegg.com - ASUS G74SX-DH72 Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 17.3" 16GB Memory DDR3 750GB 7200 + 160GB SSD HDD 7200rpm Blu-ray-enabled DVD±RW/CD-RW NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

Totally not necessary right now, but there was a time where people thought 1GB, 2GB, 4GB of ram was ridiculous. I was just curious if it would be possible to upgrade down the road if I needed to! :)

With 2 slots... I doubt it's possible... but by the time 16GB becomes a standard, the laptop will be beyond obsolete... so far 4GB is the norm... 8GB may become the new standard... but unless you're running a server or really heavy multitasking... 16GB is really not necessary...

A couple days ago I accidentally dropped my Y470, and it kind of messed some things up on it. There's some cracks, and a little broken plastic by one of the screws. The main annoyance that I'm having right now is that the CD drive is really loose. It is loose enough to make a little squeaking noise every time I press a key on my keyboard. It is starting to get really annoying. I know it is the CD drive, because if I hold it and press keys on the keyboard, it doesn't make the sound.

Is there any good way to keep the CD drive in place, besides taping it or something?

    Thanks.

I OC to 879 once... for like 5 minutes, I hit 94 fps on Sc2 Ultra, and about crapped my pants and turned it off.
I used 822 for Sc2 for a 2-3 hour time frame and hit and sustained around 79 degrees in a hot room, is this dangerous temp?

What is bad for a sustained temp?
What is bad for a spiked temp?

Should be fine, as long as you keep both CPU and GPU under 80 Degrees Celsius.

Yes it's ok, your's power supply its a resonant power supply, SMPS(Switching Mode Power Supply) usualy they are switching a dc voltage between + floating GND -; and the frequency of switching varies from couple of kHz to almost 1MHz in function how much current is needed from power supply. So when the switching is somewhere 1Khz and 25-30 Khz it-s in the audio spectrum band so u can hear the noise, because inside the brick it's a transformer(inductor coil) what acts like the coil from a speaker, and that is what make the noise.

    I hope u understand what i told u !!

Does installing another bios version void warranty and, if yes, how can I backup current bios to install later?
