I heard when you update to newer graphic card drivers, some options in the control panel are greyed out.
anyway, any of you guys played Max Payne 3 yet? That game is a very good port comparing to GTA4.
-
anyone figure out a way to run vlc media player with the nvidia gpu?
-
So, I decided to change thermal compound as one last hope to deal with overheating and trackpad problems. Turned out that ribbon cable from trackpad was poorly connected. Also it doesn't have a lock that fixes it in the place. After reassembling the laptop, trackpad works like a charm. So far.
Hope this helps. -
I use MPC-HC + LAV Filters and then choose CUVID that way videos play using the GPU and are much smoother and when you navigate between diff. parts of the movie the transition to the new image/scene is so smooth
-
Good to hear you solved the problem (and that it wasn't something more serious) ^_^. -
Not in my case, all the functions are still there.
-
Yeah same here upgraded my drivers as soon as I got it and no problem
-
What about temperatures then ?
-
hello has anyone tried the new nvidia verde drivers version : 301.42 ?? whats the performance like ?
-
I havent got around to putting the AS5 on et, but using the TC 1996 I'm getting temps that max out around 60C, a HUGE improvement over the near 90C temps and shutdowns before.
-
Temperatures didn't change much. And the center bottom is still hotter than the other parts.
These are temperatures in the idle state:

@kak, I'd say thats just a little bit high, you have thermal paste, so it's probably due to poor application or dust build- up. I've noticed the center does get a bit warm, but never hot to the touch (unless I cover up the vents for a few minutes), it's a bit of a heat trap though. And your temps don't look insanely high.
I idle at about 40*C for reference.
I can't believe I let my laptop go so long without any thermal compound. :\ -
does anyone know how to setup a wired connection? i can't seem to get it to recognize it.
-
As in wired internet? Through your ethernet port? Setup should be a snap, assuming that the adapter is enabled.
-
yea through the ethernet port. i plug it in but nothing happens and it doesn't recognize it.
-
then probably it is not the computer, but the network.
Unless you plug the wire into another computer and it works. Otherwise, I'd delete the network card driver and hit "search for new hardware" in device manager.

Hi guys,
I haven't tinkered with my Y470 for some time. Have yet to update some drivers too. Care to share any feedback about the latest nVidia driver 301.42, notably about change/s in performance, issues or whatever.
Thanks! -
this is my personal experience:
everything took a huge performance hit. i don't always play the latest and greatest and one of my main games is Killing Floor, which runs on the UT2004 engine. my FPS took a huge dip, even with all the settings on low. i tested it in Deus Ex:HR and same results. Skyrim? not a chance. so i uninstalled and did a clean install of the 296.10 drivers and everything's back to normal.
was really hoping the 301.42 would make my DE:HR buttery smooth 24/7, even in the Detroit area
maybe the next drivers
i noticed others were having the same problem on various forums and a google search led me to this discussion too:

Is there an extended battery for the y470 yet? Really really wanting to get a hold of something before a big trip.
-
Hi guys:
I recently encountered a strange problem on my y570. I usually have AC plugged in all the time and the energy management is always in "best battery health" mode (So the battery will be charged to 49%-50%). But the problem is whenever I unplug the AC, the remaining battery(about 50%) drains up in less than 10 mins. I didn't have this problem when I first bought it 8 Months ago and I have no idea what's going on. Please help... thanks.
EDIT: BTW, I checked my battery wear level using EVEREST and it's 3%, is that too much? -
Just an FYI, BF3 latest update made the game now run on the Y570 like a champ! No tweaking, just latest NV drivers and the last patch and now it is playing smoother then on my desktop on auto detect.
-
Yep, latest 301 Nvidia drivers seems to remove lag and cpu throttling on Fifa 12 also, need more time to test tough.
-
just if anyones wondering, DOTA2 runs fine on the y570 with all settings on high
and if anyone wants it, you can buy into the beta as its somewhere on the steam/dota2 site -

Hope you guys can give me some good advice on a issue I am experiencing. I purchased my Y570 around September of last year and everything was going well until recently.
The machine itself is working fine but perhaps about a month ago I have been experiencing an issue when opening, closing or adjusting the screen. To be more specific, whenever I move the screen (e.g. open my laptop to use it or close it at night), one of the corners (right side) of my laptop seems to be detaching or coming apart. IF I keep my fingers holding the chasis together while opening the lid, it seems to be ok. However, if I dont, it seems like it slowly breaking and may eventually flat out break apart.
What do you all recommend I do regarding this? Something I can do to try to fix it or something else? Thanks -
Good morning,
I have been having issues running Diablo 3 on this laptop, tried countless things and now finally found a working solution. I bought a cooling mat and have it running at high, the temps still show 80 during game play but I no longer experience the same issues as before.
I purchased this from costco.ca last October. Do I return to costco and ask them to reapply the thermal paste or do it myself or just keep the cooling pad as it is working?
I cant believe its this bad that I need to purchase a cooling unit to blow cool air on the machine... -
80 is above normal. It's a thermal issue, if your laptop isn't shutting down it means you probably at least have some thermal paste, you could either replace it with better quality paste / less paste, or if youre still under warranty have them fix it. Another possibility is dust build up, the huge vents love to pile up dust in the fan against the left grill When you're at 80, can you feel the warm the air blowing out of the left side?
-
Yes I can feel warm air on left side... how would I remove the dust, would I not need to open this sucker up?
-
It wouldnt void warranty, just take out the back panel, and unscrew the fan, (3 screws I think) just fold it over, no need to unplug, take a look, if there's dust clean it out however you want (use common sense).
-
Alright thanks. I will try this tonight!
-
This isn't a problem with my GPU not being turned on during the games I play. This is a problem with this card/CPU getting ty fps in SOME games. I read through other threads for a few days and found that people are setting their CPU MIN/MAX performance to 99% so it can't throttle..... seems pretty stupid and something that isn't good for the computer, but it works better than any other solution I've found so far. Most importantly it also seems like something I shouldn't have to do to get good performance out of a computer I just dropped $600 bucks on.
Anyone have any other solutions for better FPS in Diablo 3 / D3? -
cplus I dont know if you read my recent replies but I found the entire FPS issue with D3 is entirely heat related on my y570... buying a cooling mat stopped my FPS drops and I now play great. Tonight I will open it up and remove all the dust and continue using the cooling mat..
-
No yellow/green tinted road textures with latest drivers?
It's under a year old, so it should still be under warranty. This is something you will need to have fixed by Lenovo. -
I don't know if it ever got resolved, so I figured I'd throw this out there. I've seen a lot of confusion if the Y570 can use a HD+ or FHD display because of the LVDS pinout. I've seen it disputed as just an assumption from reading the maintenance manual. I recently took the keyboard off my laptop to clean it, and I can confirm 100% that the display plug on the motherboard is only 30 pins. HOWEVER, there are solder points for a 40-pin connector. Theoretically, you could solder in a new 40-pin connector to upgrade your screen (I'm not brave or rich enough to test this out). I have the pictures to prove it if people are interested.
EDIT: I have the Y570 -
i think i have this problem too. some games seem to utilize my GT555M but some others just can't seem to detect it it seems (i can tell via FPS and benchmarks). i've searched google so many times and found the cpu min/max 'solution', using a FPS throttling app, hitting the 'moon' button to efficient dissipation among other various tips but there is no one solid fix.
what really riled me up is when someone posted 'flip the switch on the front right!' ... DUH.
i've had my Y570 for about 10-11mths and i think its time to change the thermal paste. i've experienced shutdowns due to hot temps (GPU temp was 90+). there is no dust blocking the left vents and my temporary bootleg solution right now is to rest my laptop on a sturdy, wicker basket (weave pattern allows air flow throughout) and my temps have dropped 10-17 degrees.
-
@angry sounds like what was happening to me, if your warranty is over I'd go ahead and open it up. I'll try to do a video about how to get to the heatsink whenever i decide to replace my thermal paste, we'll see.
(it's not too difficult but lenovo makes it a pain in the )
-
i'd truly appreciate a nice video. would be a nice plus when i put this thing up for resale

Hello, I've been having some serious problems with my system these past days...it all started with Kaspersky Anti-virus...and ended up blowing up in my face. Long story short, I had to re install a fresh copy of W7. The problem is that now I can't turn on my computer without it being connected to a power source! Once it boots, I can disconnect without a problem, I can also press sleep and wake it up without it being connected. I really don't know what is going on. I think I can configure it on the BIOS but I bought this laptop used and I do not have the password
and to top it off everytime I boot with the SSD Mini PCI-E inserted, my computer wants to boot from the Broadcam Lan boot. I REALLY NEED THAT BIOS PASSWORD!! Can I just take the CMOS battery out? I know its soldered...but can I reset it?
-THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
EDIT: I removed the tiny CMOS (which was soldered) for about 40 minutes. I then soldered it back......no luck :S it still asks for a password. yet the time and date did reset. Ughh. -
My Y570 just passed its one year anniversary, and all that time I've the same EXACT problems that you described. This morning I bought thermal paste and opened up my system. The amount of original thermal paste was very minuscule, I removed and applied a nice even layer to it. I played Skyrim for an hour just now, and the CPU temp never got over 70 Celsius. Also the lag "spikes" are gone, smooth gameplay
.
I strongly recommend you, and any other Y570 owners with this problem to open up their notebook and reapply the thermal paste, from what I can tell, the lack of thermal paste it the main source of ALL our problems. -
what paste did you use? and did you use any guides/videos to help?
how long did it take? -
Since I did the same I'll answer your questions as well.
I used Dow corning TC 1996, but I plan on fixing / replacing it with some AS5 when I have the time, I got even better temps after replacing my compound, I seldom break 65 C.
I read the manual and used common sense when opening the laptop,
The entire process took about 2 hours, It was a bit easier for me because there was no paste to clean up, but lenovo doesn't make it easy to take apart. In the process of putting the machine back together one screw bracket broke, so that left me +1 screw, to Lenovo's credit most of the screws are interchangeable, what gave me the most trouble was removing the palm rest and speaker grill, they're stuck in there pretty good. -
To take apart, Y570 complete disassembly - YouTube
It took me about 1 1/2 hours to take apart and put my system back together. Also I used a $12 compound from Best-Buy, and I have to agree with shoeman, taking apart the Y570 is a little bit of a challenge. -
Use Hardware Maintenance Manual - Lenovo IdeaPad Y470, Y570 to disassemble for Y470 owners as the process is a little different!

Hey There,
I have been using Lenovo Y470 for arround 10 months, The overheat from the left side of the Y470 is killing me, I checked with CPUtemp, when its throttling almost 90+ degrees.
I assume the problem will be in thermal paste. If I get the to claim the warranty, will Lenovo or the seller help me to change/reapply the thermal paste? -
I just replaced the thermal paste on my .y470 and put my 470 perfectly back together...but when I press the power button ,the fan moves for 2secs and moving...the leds for the computer stays on but the computer is completely quiet and the screen is not coming on either...can anyone help
-
You probably didn't put it "perfectly back together". Try pressing function F2. Otherwise, could be a dead motherboard
.
-
Ouch. You may have shorted something. But yeah what shoe said. Sadly.your warranty may be invalid. I would never mess with a laptop like that. Did you ground yourself first?
-
Take it back apart and make sure everything is connected. I did the same thing when I repasted the CPU, but didn't notice my problems until ~1 month later. A tiny connector from the mobo to the front of the laptop was very loose and occasionally not making connection, resulting in a BSOD or the machine powering down.
On that note, though, does anyone know where I can buy replacement screws like the ones on the bottom of the laptop? One of mine is stripped.
EDIT: Should have read the repair manual first. They are M2.5x8mm, and I can buy them in quantity from laptopscrews.com (of all places!) -
Yup, that's the one thing I'll give lenovo credit for, the screws. Other than that the fact that one plastic strap blocks easy access to the heat sink is just dumb.
-
Hi, I'm planning to buy a Lenovo Ideapad Y570 (CORE i5-2410M 6GB 750GB NVIDIA GEFORCE 555M) and replace the processor with a i7-2630QM.
Do you think the cooling will suffice?
