If it's the same heatsink as the 470, then yes. Just use a good quality thermal paste (I used IC Diamond) and don't use too much of it. My temps rarely exceed 80 degrees, and that's while gaming.

Hi all! Sorry for throwing a stone into the bush! I have a Y570, i7 2630QM and 12GB RAM. I want to install an extra SSD together with my HDD. I know my laptop has the capacity to do this, so what I want to know is if anyone here's done it before, and if you have any tips/tricks?

    Thanks!

I'm owner of a Y470. I also had problems in games (FPS drops down while playing games). I disassembled my laptop, cleared cooler, and replaced thermal paste (I didn't use too much). Now it works perfectly, I can play Diablo 3 without any problems. GPU temperature was around 90-95 degrees Celsius before replacing thermal paste, and it's around 70-75 degrees after replacing.

Today I've bought OCZ Nocti Series NOC-MSATA-120G and installed it successfully. Installation was really easy, nothing special. The only problem was missing screw for a new module.

Also I installed 16GB of RAM (2x Kingston KVR1333D3S9/8G). It works perfectly. The funny thing was when I went to BIOS straight after installation. And the amount of RAM shown there was 6384 MB . I thought it was a problem with frequencies, but then I noticed that they were the same as in previous RAM modules. So I installed 8GB and 4GB modules. The BIOS prompted that I have 2288 MB. I was like "what the ". Then I installed both 8GB modules and booted in my OS and saw that I actually have all of my precious 16GB of RAM :D I looks like BIOS can not display more than 4 symbols for the amount of RAM.

I recently applied some Arctic Silver 5 to my GPU/CPU. Everything works except for the GPU. SpeedFan doesn't detect a GPU and I cannot open Nvidia Control Panel. I took off the sticker but one of the posters said that it doesn't matter. There's some sticker residue left on it. I'll admit, it is not as clean as it should be but I'm not sure if that is the problem. I can guarantee it did not short circuit because it was dry.

the nvidia gpu doesn't get detected until it is in used. Run a game and try again. If it is still not there then check the switches, and then the driver.

If all else fails, you're doomed.

Hey guys I got a y470 i7 8g ram yadda yadda anyway, ive had it for about 6 months now and my caps lock key randomly came off i looked at it and two of the little tabs pieces randomly broke off that keep it help down. Anyway to my question, i convinced them to send me a new keyboard beacuse i use my laptop for work as well and cant part with it for 2-3 weeks at least. They said if i do damage to it while trying to replace it it will void my warrenty soooooooooo does anyone know if its hard to change the whole keyboard or would it maybe be best to try to take the capslock key off the new keyboard they send me and try to put it on the one i have now any help if this would be awesome thanks

Keyboard is pretty easy to replace just have to take off a few screws. As for the heat problem you probably have to change the thermal paste which is a bit harder.

    Hey guys,
So i'm looking to buy myself a new laptop for the next few years that I can comfortably play games at medium detail. I stumbled across the Y570 on sale (Canadian) for 699:
    i5-2450M Processor
    Geforce 555M
    4.0GB PC3-10600 DDR3
    500 GB 7200rpm

Is this worth buying today or should I really be looking to get an Ivy Bridge CPU? What really attracted me was the price.
Processor and GPU reviews seem to point towards this being a fairly competent lap top however, the i5-2450 doesn't seem to have garnered much favour.

    Thanks for any input.

I just was forced to reformat after a virus I couldn't get rid of on my Y570. I used OneKey Recovery to reboot into the recovery mode and restore to the factory settings. After I rebooted, and ran a few windows updated, I'm noticing overall sluggishness, especially when watching videos. Windows Movie Player or VLC are both skipping or look like they're running at a low fps. When watching something on Facebook or Netflix, it's sluggish and moving the mouse around slows down the video.

I made sure I updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers, and Windows update is pretty up to date. I'm using a Logitech MX513 that's just using Windows' drivers. Nothing special.

Here's my task manager while sitting here writing this post:

I'm a new Y570 owner and bought my laptop about 2 months back, everything is fine so far except the temps I'm getting. I've already run a few pages back, and I'm assuming I'm going to have to change out the thermal paste. Just while playing minecraft, i'm getting up to 90 degrees readings from CPU temp. I already have it raised on a cooling pad, and have no idea why temps are getting this high. Just was wondering if I should really go ahead and open my brand new laptop. I've had experience with desktops, having built my own, but have never once touched the insides of a laptop.

    Hi there,

I'm guessing that you have the i7 version of the y570? If so, those aren't really bad temperatures. 90 degrees is very common for the y570 and y470.

If you are really worried about the longevity of your notebook you can do some things to help lower the temperature.

    1) Cooling pad (which you already did)
    2) Make sure the fan setting is set to "efficient thermal dissipation"
    3) Make sure the vent on the side of your computer is not clogged with dust. If it is, take off the backing of the notebook, take off the fan from the heatsink and either using compressed air or your mouth, blow into the notebook to release the dust.
    4) Open up the notebook and repaste the GPU and CPU (not recommended for novices)

Sorry for not including specs in my original post. But yes:
    i7-2670QM 2.20GHZ
    8GIG Ram
    GeForce GT 555M

I end up reading so many different things about some CPU's handling higher temps, while others should never go above 70. After reading previous posts of people saying they don't go over 60-70 while playing Skyrim, I got a little worried. I am very paranoid about heat in computers and what to make the equipment last as long as possible.

Thank you for your advice, I guess I'll start to worry when I got over 100

the vent location is quite bad. on the very bottom and without support, the laptop won't be able to vent properly - even with the rubber feet - as its pretty much flat against the surface its on.

Hello everyone! Like others I've noted the Y570 running rather hot. However while it's making a lot of noise at least on mine there doesn't seem to be much actual air being expelled. So with a bit of investigation I found that the fan exit doesn't properly cover the heatsink. With the bottom cover off there seem to be a fair bit of air being blown past. There are bits of foam stuck around there I presume to seal it up somewhat. So I just used it of insulation tape to seal up the gap between the fans edge and the heatsink , which pretty much fixed it. Did a bit of burn in and it seems to climb up fair bit slower and just stop before throttling which hasn't happened before. For me the next step will be repaste but for now this helped.

Im back with another Y570 question. Im comfortable with taking it apart and applying more thermal paste, but this voids the warranty, correct? Would overheating be a valid reason for sending in for warranty repair? Does the 1year out of box warranty cover this? Im just afraid to void my warranty but then need it one day. My computer still running around 90celsius average during games, the GPU tends to stay under 80. This laptop only bring a month old, I want it to last. Any advice?

Hi, long time lurker of this forum and especially this thread.
The touch buttons on the top right of my Y470 are flashing in random combinations while the thermal management button remains lit.
None of the buttons respond, and the menus randomly pop up as if I were using the buttons, interrupting me typing.
I've tried reinstalling the drivers, but to no avail.
I've replaced the hard drive before, so OKR is not an option. I really don't want to do a clean install.

Hello everyone. I just got a Lenovo Y470 earlier this year, and I've been playing Skyrim on it for some time now. It runs on about 14-22 fps out in the game world, and on medium settings with AA and AF turned off. I have the i7 version with nvidia 550m card and 4gb ram. Would this be normal?

Now, I've mostly been only mildly annoyed by this, but I've seen some people with similar specs who run the game at 30+ fps at high-ish settings.

I've tried all sorts of tweaks, but the regular framerate has not changed significantly. Also, in the game launcher, it shows that the game is still using the Intel card instead of the Nvidia card. And yeah, I've tried the Control Panel solution, but it won't let me change the setting for some reason. Anyone kind enough to help?

The pricing for the Y Ideapad series is great. The hardware inside is comparable to others in its price range. What isn't good is the laptop design in regards to not having lit keyboard, the heat dissipation/thermal design, touchpads and overall aesthetics.

Anyhoot, has anyone upgraded to Windows 8? I did it this morning, but I can't get my optimus to work with the switch. I looked on the Lenovo site yesterday and they haven't posted all of the Windows 8 drivers. Of course, it doesn't actually come out until October, but it would be nice.

Nevermind, I found the drivers on Nvidia's website. The only issue I had with the move to Win 8 was the Nvidia, ethernet, bluetooth and ethernet drivers.

It's running smoothly, knock on wood.

Hello, this is my first post in the Y570/470 owners thread. I've been having an issue with 1 of the 2 Y570s that I own. The problem began around June, it wouldn't startup for some reason. I would press the power button, the power, volume controls, etc. buttons will light up but nothing would be displayed. And also the fan would spin for 2 seconds and then it would turn off. I could leave the laptop on for some minutes and then the cpu and gpu would heat up but the fan would not kick in, so I turn it off for safety. After doing some basic resets like taking out the battery, pressing the power 5 times, etc. and removing the HDD and letting the laptop sit for some hours it would finally come to life. But as the time has gone by it's gotten harder and harder to turn it on when it happens again. Right now, 1 week has gone by and can't boot my computer, I have disassembled the laptop completely and assembled it...but no luck.

What happens when I try booting:

When I power it I can only hear the fan kick in for 2 seconds, hear the HDD spin slowly, and no other sounds are present. And I'm not seeing the "CPU Harddrive Accessing" LED does NOT light up, which is normally one of the first things that flickers when it boots, and I don't hear the Optical Drive kick in either which normally indicates a boot up.

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Same thing happened to me about 2 months ago. I had the courage one day to open the laptop to change the thermal paste and ended up in that situation...I assumed the display was dead so I called Lenovo to bring a screen when the technician came in for in home repair (I have in home warranty). The technician showed up four days later and replaced the screen but the laptop still wasn't working. I sent the laptop to Lenovo the very next day for repair and got it back in two weeks. They diagnosed the motherboard as the issue and the laptop has working great since I received it. I suggest you send the laptop in for the fix and tell them that you think the motherboard is faulty.

Thanks for the response! I really do think its a bad motherboard but the thing is that I have opened the laptop up already to re-paste the cpu/gpu. This obviously voids the warranty, I got the laptop in May this year through Amazon directly for $530 new (Bargain!). I really think the repair and motherboard replacement will cost about 60% of what I bought it for. What do you think?

Lenovo will fix it even if you opened it...when the in home technician showed up..he told lenovo that I had opened the laptop and had voided warranty () but Lenovo told him it was fine. The will fix it as long as you haven't broken anything in the laptop...I know Dell would have voided the warranty right away but Lenovo fixed it anyway..I bought my laptop from Lenovo's website so I don't know if your warranty is different. Call Lenovo and tell them the issue.

    Hello everyone.

I've had my Lenovo y570 for about a year and I was able to get a 120GB SSD for it and I would like to install it along with the 750 GB hard drive already inside of it. I have already read that I would need a drive caddy but could someone help me out with the process after I receive it? I would like to put the OS on the SSD and keep the rest of my data on the 750GB HDD.

I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS PC. Is the 2012 BANG FOR THE BUCK FOR OCASIONAL GAMERS*

(Yes, there is an asterisk. That means an IF. Keep reading).

I quite follow this thread before I bought my y570 this year in June but just today I registered. I bought it from Lenovo and shipped it with final destination (details available if someone asks) El Salvador (it's a country, not in Mexico or California). After almost three weeks of waiting time I did get it. My first impression was that I've got a bang for the buck. My system is:

    -i7 2nd generation.
    -8gb of RAM.
    -500gb 7200rpm.
    -DVD Burner.
    -nVidia GTX 555m.
-For 750 + tax + shipping to El Salvador (this provided by a Local Courier) = 950$

Well, that was before turning it on. I wanted a computer to play in good specs (not obsessive or ultra HQ like many others that truly play) for example Skyrim, Assasins Creed and mostly FIFA (it doesnt need a huge PC, I know). Also to play around with routers, programming and other college things.

Computer performance out of the box is quite good. Well not good, it's outstanding for the price. But the Hard Disk was clicking (the idle clicks not the death clicks), HDMI was NOT GIVING SIGNAL (Intel/Nvidia quite famous issue, you can google it) and the computer got really hot when playing or programing. Three major issues I could live with.

To get the best from this computer, my advice is buy an mSATA (120gb up will be really nice, I've got myself that Mushkin Atlas, performing awesomely in fact) and MAKE a CLEAN INSTALL of Windows. From ground up, customize it the way you want it and the computer will provide a MUCH MUCH BETTER PERFORMANCE. Open it and put thermal paste on CPU and GPU as well, to let the computer live longer. Use CrystalMarkDisk to disable AAM/APM on the 500gb HDD (and end up with those ultra bothering clicks) and install right from manufactorers, first INTEL and after NVIDIA video drivers and HDMI will work out flawless. With those tweaks, this computer becomes the true bang for buck for OCASIONAL GAMERS. In two years I might be bored of this computer (Circle of life, I guess) but would be still performing to make it a gift to my parents that use computers to read mails and -watch youtube, tv shows, 9gag and- skype with my family out El Salvador.

    Hi!

    I have a question about Windows 8.
I own y470p, which is basically y470 with a different graphic card - that's why I'm posting my question here.
    My configuration is:

    i7 2670QM
    8GB RAM
    AMD Radeon HD 7690M
    750GB 5400rpm HDD
I also installed mSATA Intel 80GB SSD (currently used for my win7 system)

I installed Windows 8 x64 on my computer, and I tried to install all the win8 drivers and programs for my computer that I could get from Lenovo support site.

I had problems with audio (realtek) and camera drivers - I got an error message that said I have all the files already on my computer and if I want to replace them. I did that, but installation ended with an error stating that there is no hardware found for the driver.
Drivers are (with the exception of graphic card) the same as they are for y470.

But since everything seemed to work at first I didn't mind.

After installing all the drivers and programs I noticed that optical SPDIF light is always on and I can’t turn it off. Also after installing OneKey Theatre I got an error that I have to install correct audio drivers (which I can't). Also thermal management button isn't working and keeps on blinking. And the last problem I found was that energy management software doesn't allow me to change battery setting (it keeps changing to "Optimize for battery performance", even if I set "Optimize for battery health"). I keep my computer hooked to AC power and connected to my 24" screen a lot, so I find this a desirable function.

All the problems are not critical but come as an annoyance.

My copy of Windows 8 is a final version I got from my faculty MSDNAA program - or at least so I've been told.

Did anybody else tried Windows 8 on y470/y570/y470p and if so, did anybody seen or even solved problems I described?

    Thank you for the help!

    Cosso

I'm still using my Lenovo y570 and after my first reformat after a virus and everything working fine for 2 months, I'm noticing explorer acting weird. Basically after the computer is on for a few hours, the thumbnails for images in explorer turn to white boxes and explorer sometimes even doesn't load everything in the my computer list, only showing 2-3 items. I did a full disk cleanup and rebooted, and it was fine for a day, and now any new image I put in my pictures folder is a white box. Any idea what's causing this?

How do you boot into safe mode on the Y570? neither F2 or F12 work, just bring up BIOS menus. I tried going to recovery but no option either. I'm trying to delete two files on my desktop that are apparently always in use by system..? They are 2 android 4.0 .iso's for use in VirtualBox. Anyway please help me I don't know the button to press while booting.

Mashing F8 as soon as you get past the BIOS works for me.

As so many others here, I want to upgrade the Intel 1000 wifi card on my Y570.

I made the mistake of ordering a standard Intel 6250 as I thought was listed in the HMM for the Y570. I did not research enough to realize it would not work due to the whitelist needing some Lenovo codes from a Lenovo version of the standard chip. Luckily, the vendor was very good about it and took a return.

So my question now is, the FRU Lenovo uses for this same card on a ThinkPad (60Y3195) is different from the FRU listed for the IdeaPad (20002321).

Does this mean anything? I see someone else installed a 6205 successfully that was sold using the ThinkPad FRU.

I am just wondering why they are using different FRU's for the same card, or is it the same card?
