I ordered this in the end, hope it fits.

Laptop makers use OEM keys usually. Might need a new key to do a fresh installation but you can use the OEM key to restore the laptop with.
-
the problem is not finding the key, its where to get the actually files from, no optical drive and no iso to get since it wasnt downloaded or purchased.
-
MS provides ISO downloads here for people with a key: Upgrading Windows with only a product key - Windows Help
Hopefully someone with a spare drive can test out a vanilla 8.1 install, I don't have an extra SSD to test with yet. -
ill be doing it on about wednesday, just wondering if i should do the fresh install before cloning to the ssd or after when the sdd is installed.
-
That's where I got my copy of Win8.1 when I installed my Samsung Evo SSD. Worked just fine. Some necessary drivers (like chipset and SD card reader) can be obtained from either the Lenovo support/download website or it should be in one of the partitions on the HDD that came with your laptop.
Also - you can find your Win8.1 product key using "wpkey" - google it and you'll find it.Medlock87 likes this. -
Who started this rumor about locked clock speeds? I've already shown the Y50 860m to auto boost to 1100Mhz when needed. GPUz shows 1020Mhz on the first tab no matter what. Go to the "Sensors" tab to see what speed the card is actually running. It varies between 0 (when the card is off during desktop mode) to 1097Mhz when it's boosted.

Thanks for doing current gen game testing. I've definitely been impressed with the cooling both in terms of cpu/gpu core temperatures and the quietness of the fans. It's a pity they placed the cpu/gpu package right under the WASD keys; I think it would have been better if they flipped the entire insides on the y-axis, but it's been perfectly usable so far.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015Earlcooo likes this.

The chinese i5 models are all locked to 1020mhz and do not go beyond that. If the boost tab says 1020mhz then it shouldn't go above that
-
Do you have an actual unit to test that? Did the Chinese models get verified by looking at the "Sensor" tab in GPUz when under load? Mine also claims "Boost: 1020Mhz", but clearly goes to 1100Mhz.
For Y50 owners out there: Beeho and kingfirejet, please use GPUz and check your actual clock speed when you play games for us. Remember to go to the "Sensor" tab.Earlcooo likes this. -
The keyboard flexes if you push down abnormally hard - by hard I mean like you put a 15-20 pound dumbbell on it. Under regular typing, even heavy handed typing, there is no movement.
-
why is my clock speed so high?
edit: i thought i was on balanced but it was on high performanceAttached Files:
-
-
Because you have your power settings on "High Performance" mode. Set it to "Balanced" or below and it will auto down clock to as low as ~700Mhz [for me anyway].
-
you were too fast, I thought I was on balanced when clearly i wasnt
-
It was clear from the 3dmark11 scores
with the same driver, this is the graphics score for the stock 860M
notice the graphics score is only 4800.
even on notebookcheck, it shows the avg and med score to be around 5200. this is surprisingly low for a normal 860M
this is the graphics score after the user manually OC'd to 1155mhz
notice how the graphics score rose to around 5340. since the clock is higher than the maximum clock speed that boost provides
here's his config
the difference in graphic score is evident that at least for the chinese models, the clockspeed is locked.
you, beeho and kingfirejet should definitely test it out -
I just downloaded and ran 3DMark11 Demo via Steam. You are right, I also got a score of 4800. However, take a look at the below:
**The below image and comments are wrong as pointed out by QoelQast. The 860m was still running at 1097Mhz max.**
It even boosts to 1200Mhz on "High Performance" power settings. I don't know what else to say. Maybe new drivers are needed?
-
Does it change when you take GTX from the drop-down menu in GPU-Z (at the bottom)?
-
Does it make a difference if you run 3dmark on balanced or high performance even if it's plugged in?

My apologies, you are correct that I was looking at the wrong GPU. The 860m was still clocking at 1097Mhz at "High Performance" power settings.
-
I updated the driver to version 337.88 by following heibk201's instructions and now I get a 3DMark11 score of 4860. I had the power settings on "High Performance".
-
it still seems like something's locked or else it shouldn't be this low
-
Thats wierd, i was able to get 5000 with the new driver.
-
can you post a picture of GPU-z?
-
That seems like a solid score. My Asus G750JM with the 860M that I returned after a few days because the subwoofer went out only scored a 4207 on Firestrike and that was overclocked!!!. My MSI GT70 that I got on friday from amazon the SD card reader doesnt work. Im going to call MSI tomorrow and If I have to send it back to Amazon Im ordering a Y50 with the 512gb SSD from Klick!!!
-
I may try to do a video review when I get my Y50 later this week or early next week. No offense to those who made the previous ones (I greatly appreciated the reviews and I had been dying to see consumer footage of the laptop), but I've been hoping for a well-lit review shot on a DSLR and geared toward video editors and 3D artists. So I figured hey, I might as well be the one to make it.
We'll see if I have time, though.

Thinking of buying a Y50, is there any options for adding additional internal storage space to the laptop after purchasing from lenovo?
If not, what external storage options are better? I hear external SSD's are still slower with usb3. -
Reliable, Premium Quality, Fast, and Easy Setup SSD: Samsung 840 Evo (500GB is what I have and is really fast and has fantastic performance).
Reliable, Cheap, Good Quality: Crucial SSD (512GB is a good deal)
External HDD & SSD's are slow, but I have a Seagate 1TB that syncs constantly to have a good back up. -
Okay, how the heck are you guys getting such high scores?
I ran the 3DMark Demo with...
+ Latest Nvidia Driver (NOT 332.50)
+ High Performance Battery Mode
+ Nvidia Image Settings to "Performance"
+ Msi Afterburner OC on (1232Mhz was the clock on the GPU)
+ Razer Game Booster on the 3DMark Demo
+ I even disabled my touch screen lol
Here were my results -.- 3800 about
-
With the new drivers, my temps in a BF4 64 man server on high settings hits CPU temps of 81-82 C'. Also, the aswd area now feels really warm.
With old stock drivers, I wasn't hitting 80 C' at all. -
we were running 3dmark11...
-
check if you set the physx to CPU instead of GPU because you did an express install
-
what're you getting? the touchscreen model?
-
i don't think that external SSDs are practical as you don't really need to access the files you put on that with the speed of an SSD. but still, if you don't care about the money, then go!
-
Does the Y50 CPU overclock to 3.17 ghz automatically when you set power settings to High Performance? Do other CPU do the same? Can it be over clocked higher than 3.17?
Forgive these noob questions, some clarity would be greatly appreciated. -
looks like bad news
-
Crap!
That's a bit of a bummer, can anyone else confirm what beeho is experiancing with updated drivers? -
Can someone do an IC Diamond thermal paste video tutorial? Shouldn't that lower temps as much as ten degrees?

hello NBR fellows, any reason why one should not purchase the below Y50?
Lenovo Y50 (59418222 config.) with Intel Core i5 4200H (2.8GHz)
thanks for any advice. -
Does anyone have a 512 GB ssd version yet? If so is it possible to find out what model the ssd is?

It varies really to how you use your laptop. If you are power user that runs lots of applications and requires pure raw power, the i7 Quad is by much better than the Dual core i5.
Now for gaming I don't think you would see a big difference between the two but the i7 should still be slightly better.
Where do you find one with an i5?
Only options I see are ones with i7-4700HQ or i7-4710HQ, not sure how much cheaper a i5 model is over an i7 but even if I had to pay a little extra I would rather get the i7.
Intel Core i5-4200H vs i7-4700HQ -
Well not by 10 degrees but it would show some improvement, however it may be just the limit of the cooling system. You will only improve the thermal conductance between the cpu/gpu die and the heat sink, it won't help if the fans can't get rid of the heat quickly enough.
I would suggest to temporally turn of the CPU turbo boost and see what kind of temps you will get, that would also give more headroom to potentially overclock the GPU if needed. And even with turbo boost disabled a 4700HQ is more than quick enough. -
SSDs are about 23498763245 times more durable than platter drives, as portables. Speed aside, the fact that I can have something work as essentially a XXX GB USB stick goes a long way for me.
======================
I think I've made the mental commitment to hop into a Y50. I was on the fence between it and the GS60 Ghost, but I have a lot more faith in Lenovo as a manufacturer than MSI. Not to mention I can get similar performance and save a couple hundred bucks.
The debate right now is deciding on a trim level. I have no problem user upgrading, so I'm considering grabbing the best CPU I can and upgrade the RAM + HDD when I can snag some good sales. Still doing some digging. This thread seems to help narrow things down a bit for me. The $1150 option is intriguing.
The laptop will be used as a gaming machine while on work travel. I mostly play WoW, but have played a few other Blizzard games lately (D3, Heroes of the Storm). Plus I'd love to finally make some progress on my Steam list, with Bastion being at the top of the heap. I don't plan on hooking it up to the TVs in any hotel rooms and use them as monitors, so it doesn't have to drive major displays. I have a recently upgraded desktop at home with two 1440p displays, so this won't even come out of its case when I'm not on the road (except to update). -
I played Crysis 3 for 2hrs and my temps never went passed 75C on the GPU, it averaged about 72C for me. I have the latest drivers as well.
-
I too want to know that ........ anyone?
-
No, I didn't want to spend the extra on the touch screen because I'd barely use it (it'd be interesting, but not really practical. Plus I hate fingerprints and wanted a matte screen). I got the non-touch version that was taken down from the website after the misinformation regarding the optical drive (which is definitely external).
-
Can anyone confirm the 3DMark DEMO Firestrike score? Thanks.
-
There's an i5 available at newegg.. is it possible to post a direct link?
-
your GPU temperature is fine, it's only the CPU that's jacking up the temps, as shown in the WASD region where the CPU is, which means it shouldn't be the driver's problem but rather your setting. check your nvidia control panel and see if you left any computation to your CPU instead of GPUEarlcooo likes this.

Probably my fault in how i installed the drivers, as heibk201 pointed out.
