I do but it also happened while plugged in, so I don't know if that's the cause. I'll try it though. Hopefully nobody else is having this issue and it's just me. I'd rather it not be a model wide defect.

I need some more information about the CPU throttling. I already know that the turbo is disabled after the temps reaches 65°C and CPU starts running on 2.4Ghz. I would like to know at what temps the CPU start throttling below 2.4Ghz. I heard that some people are getting 1.7 Ghz while playing heavy games. What is limiting the CPU. Is it the temps, power consumption and can this be avoided. I am seriously considering this laptop and I have all models available in the local store but if I will not be able to use this high end piece of hardware at its full potential I will go for something else. I would like to know if the GPU has any throttling issues also.

From what I read in the Notebookcheck review, the CPU will stay at 2,4Ghz under heavy load (1 hour of Prime95 und FurMark). The GPU did throttle a little bit, around 100Mhz. The CPU does throttle heavily while in battery mode though.

Hi... Cpu throttles at 100 if I'm not wrong...
And running stuff like prime and furmark together are theoretical scenarios.... You're not gonna face it practically....

The laptop handles heat well for something this thin

Definitely FHD version - 59423062 is not UHD.

I don't see any Y50 UHD version on very.co.uk - I do see the version you received here, and it says it's FHD:

Hi! I got the same issue with my Y50, I think it's an assembly problem.
The thing is that I'm from Mexico and I purchased this Laptop at Best Buy USA, so I'm wondering if Lenovo will fix this for me in my country. We should keep in touch to see if warranty covers this issue.

    Regards!

Is it possible to disable or mod the EC throttling using Throttle Stop on this laptop. I am reading somewhere that it is the same as the y510. After the GPU reaches 65°C it tells the CPU to calm down (Disabling the TB). I don't want full TB all the time but I would like to be able to sustain like 2.8 Ghz.. I think that TS would be able to mod this.

I have had a couple of computers that did that. Just thinking it was blast cooling prior to shutdown since after you turn off the computer, there is only passive cooling that remains. I never worried about it and never had an issue.

It won't but don't screw up the upgrade because if you break something it won't be covered. But all you'd have to do is put the old HD back in.

Yup it does, when I post something on say CNN the screen dims every so slightly for a fraction of a second. When I copy and paste it does it too. Kind of annoying but I'm used to it now. I run an external monitor most of the time and it doesn't happen. Definitely something to do with the display/driver/setting...something. I have everything turned off...adaptive brightness, screen dimming, etc but it still does it.

Guys, do you recommend changing something in the nvidia control panel? Like ,for example, "the power management" from "adaptive" to "prefer maximum performance". And the PhysX configuration set to the gtx 860m only?. And maybe the "multi display / mixed gpu acceleration" to "single display performance mode"?
I had a Desktop computer, so, i don`t know how to set the nvidia settings on a laptop. I want it to use its maximum power when i'm playing, but when im not i would like the laptop to work without wasting too much battery.

What's up with this? Does this look abnormal to anyone? I'm surprised at how much memory explorer is using and why disc is at 100%? I'll be honest I really have no clue as to how disc space is allocated/works... anyone seeing anything similair or can shed some light on this?

Also, as I'm typing this post disc has dropped down to 0%, I think it may have been just webroot booting up as I snipped this right after I booted up.

After a long business trip with the Y50 4k, I think I'm more aggravated with it now more than ever. I decided to return it tomorrow. Here's my pros and cons:

    Pros:
-Screen is really sharp and has incredible viewing angles
    -Price was awesome($1350+tax)
-Nice build quality for the most part(couple issues below)
    -keyboard looked nice
-860M is great for 1080p gaming
-Speakers and sound are top notch

    Cons:
-Screen + brightness is weird. Turned all the way up, it's barely 200 cd/m2. This isn't that great in well lit offices but it's certainly tolerable. The problem is there is this flickering in the brightness when doing simple tasks, such as changing windows or maximizing a tab. The brightness flickering persists in games as well. I played a number of games and noticed it randomly over and over. The only way to resolve the issue is to turn the brightness down, but there is something strange that happens to the colors below 50%. It's as if the screen uses totally different technology at lower brightness levels. It's most apparent when looking at bright and complex pictures and you turn the brightness down. It's as if the screen reprocesses the image with a whole different color scheme. You have to see it to understand. Needless to say, between all that and the yellow issue, I would much prefer a normal FHD panel
-battery life was awful my whole trip. I cannot use this as my daily driver. The main culprit is the screen being locked to full brightness. Anything below 50% is way too dark and unusable. Lowest brightness setting tested at 1.6cd/m2 lol
-I could not, for the life of me, get used to the keyboard on this thing. I'm not the best typist but I made TONS of errors on the reports I had to type. 95% of the errors were missed keystrokes. Typing hard prevented the problem but I can't train myself to type that hard all the time. The right shift key also felt off from what I've been used to and I made lots of errors hitting the up arrow instead. I've used plenty of laptops with short right shift keys so I can't explain it other than just saying it happened a lot. I'm usually pretty good at converting to new keyboards but this one was just too much
-Throttling was an issue but I was able to overcome it somewhat, using TS
-Design was nice but there were a couple flaws that I didn't care for. I'm picking nits here but I didn't like how the bottom lip stuck out a little more than the plastic palm rest. For one, this allowed for light to pass through the gap where the indicator lights were. It's also bound to get bent or dented in the long run. The other thing I didn't like was the ridges on the back edge. On a couple occasions, they snagged on other surfaces and on things in my backpack. Cool looking but kind of a nuisance.
-4k scaling is still not ready for mainstream. Many games run in letterbox and require manual changing of the desktop resolution. It's not Lenovo's fault but is still a con for the machine as a whole.

In the end, if this were a quality FHD screen, I think I would be keeping the machine. The keyboard is a pain but maybe I would tolerate it more if it weren't for everything else. The sum of all the cons is why I'm returning it though. The nail in the coffin was when I got home from my trip and started using my Q550LF again. It's a far inferior machine spec wise but I am more satisfied with the display and the keyboard. I've certainly had better machines than the Y50. Hopefully Lenovo will make things right in the next revision but I'm not holding my breath.

Be sure your Y50 meets all the requirements for WiDi. i.e. you have to be able to use the Intel HD Graphics. If you only have the Nvidia, and not the Intel HD, it won't work.

    Support Knowledge Base

Then use this WiDi upgrade tool, It will tell you if your system isn't qualified to run WiDi.

    Support Knowledge Base

I have a Y470 running WiDi to a Belkin Screencast receiver, attached to my Panasonic. I also have my A520 Ideacentre (non-WiDi) outputting Miracast to the same Belkin Screencast receiver. Of course I can't run both machines at the same time. But the Panasonic profile resides on the Belkin, so when I want to use the Widi from the laptop, I just fire up the WiDi interface, and it connects. When I want to Miracast from the A520, I shut down the laptops WiDi program, and pick "connect to a wireless receiver" (or some such verbiage) on the charms bar, and it connects flawlessly. On the first attempt to fire up Miracast, IIRC you need to "Add A Wireless Device" under your PC Settings. It searches the wireless environment, and it "sees" my Belkin Screencast, so it connects the A520 to my 50" Panasonic Plasma Screen.

I came home with a Y50 Touch (best buy model) and I Have a few questions. Is the touch pad on this thing really this bad? The multi touch scrolling is only working 50% of the time and when im typing every single minor touch of the touch pad with the palm of my hand is screwing up what I am doing. I don't understand this in the slightest but as im typing new internet explorer tabs are randomly opening when my mouse pointer is no where near the new tab button.

As I type also it seems like something else is going on and the text is not showing up right away. It seems like it may be touch pad related because when I turned the touch pad off right now the problem may have gone away but its hard to tell it still seems like there is a slight delay.

I ordered a 500 GB SSD, is there a video on replacement instructions? Also how do I go about getting the windows installed on the replacement drive? Do I need to create restore discs in windows 8 and boot from that to install windows? Is there a way to get a "cleaner" install of windows 8 without all the bloatware from Lenovo?

Last can the monitor be replaced on this model? I bought it thinking I could replace the monitor but the video I saw the comments suggested it may not be possible on the touch model due to the edge to edge glass on this model that was not there in the previous model

You PROBABLY have the synaptics touchpad. Return it and get an Elan. Apparently, some BB models have the Elan pad. Aside from that, turn up the palm detection to max and increase sensitivity of the pad so it detects multitouch better.

I like to download drivers from the hardware component manufacturers because they are always more up to date. So I installed a generic Intel 4600 graphics driver. Thought that might have been an easy solution to unlock the 48Hz but yeah....that was too easy..lol Althought Lenovo did update some of the drivers for the Y50 running 8.1. Didn't do much for me since I was already running updated ones.

Can you get 4 hours of web browsing on the UHD model? Is the screen bright enough, or as dark as Xentar claims?

Replacing the HD is easy. Download the Hardware Maintenance Manual . Start at Page 33 and just follow the instructions. Make sure you get all the screws. There are two at the top on in the hinge area that aren't pointed out well in the diagram. They are tough to see. They also do not raise up as you unscrew them so make sure your screw driver has a magnetic tip. The back cover is on there tight. Make sure you touch something metal before you start poking around inside your nice new, and expensive, laptop..lol Also, make sure you unplug the battery before you mess with anything. Unplug the HD, unscrew the bracket, take the bracket off the old HD, put it on the new, screw it down, plug it in...done. Don't forget to plug the battery back in...not that I didn't do that or anything. When I turned the laptop on for the first time after the new SSD was in...the Lenovo screen came on but the SSD never powered up. I got scared. Turned it off, then back on....came back up perfectly and has been working great ever since.

What SSD did you get? I got a Crucial 512GB and it came with a free copy of Acronis True Image HD 2014. Other manufacturers I've read usually include software for cloning/migrating drives. Personally I don't think it's necessary to do a clean install. Some of Lenovo's software is useful. I uninstalled a few pieces of software but it had nowhere near the bloatware of my old Dell. I bought a USB3.0 to SATA cable and cloned my 256GB SSD to my 512GB SSD. If you're using Acronis you have to boot to it, can't just run the software. You can create a bootable version and put it in a USB drive then boot to it. Went pretty quick and worked perfectly.

I need to decide whether to buy or not buy this laptop now. PLEASE do not ignore this post.

I am going to buy the Lenovo Y50 UHD with 8 GB SSD and 1 TB HD in the European Union. I intend to replace the HD with an SSD around Christmas. My uses for this notebook:
    -A lot of writing.
    -Digital art.
    -Web browsing
    -Gaming.
    -School.

Can anyone provide input as to whether the display is good enough for Photoshop and other painting applications? Can you comfortably write long texts on the keyboard? What is the battery like with web-browsing? Please respond as quickly as possible.

The only other option that is anywhere near my requirements that is available in this country is the low-end 15' Macbook Pro, which has greatly inferior specs but delivers on keyboard, battery and display.

I posted it a few pages back. The bios by default would kill turbo boost after seconds of use, which wasn't ideal. The threshold is something like 65C which is a pretty common temp to get to. It won't come back unless the CPU goes under 60C, which will never happen when playing a game. Additionally, I was seeing it throttle even more to around 1.7Ghz when under load. It would then alternate between 1.7 and 2.4. This didn't necessarily have to be heavy load either, as simple games caused the same issues. Throttlestop helped, so it wasn't a big deal in the end, but it was annoying that it was like that out of the box.

Hi.. It took a while to get used to the smaller shift... And initially had a problem with missing keystrokes.. I got used to the keyboard in a couple of days.. And its been pretty good since... I can't comment on the display.. I have the fhd model... But if you're worried about the 48hz.. I don't think it should be an issue..

This review should solve most of your questions...

I have the fhd model.... So ask me anything you need to know besides the screen... And il be able to help you out :)

Had it only a few days but...

A lot of writing, School, Web browsing
Fine if you are ok with occasional brightness adjustments of the screen and colors that are off. Keyboard is not great, it is not a nightmare either as well ... nothing exceptional. Also R key is falling off, have to get it replaced. Didn't have macbook but I can imagine it has better keyboard.

    Digital art.
Unusable as the colors are off and there is no - real - fix for this for now. I have Photoshop CC 14 and didn't find a way how to scale up the icons yet (there is an option in the setting but that doesn't really work as it only increases the size for a few percent but you need 200% or 250% in this case) so Photoshop is unusable for me for now but there might be a fix for this, haven't looked for long.

    Gaming
It's alright, plays games at FHD fine. Can't really handle AAA games in UHD on higher settings but lower settings generally work fine (tried Bioshock Infinite). Regardless, games work and look just fine on FHD as well. Colors are a bit off, 48hz is not really an issue (IMO).

If you find a good alternative for this laptop, please let me know. I think I am returning mine, the screen colors are unusable for any photo editing etc.

EDIT: as bva91 says, it's alright laptop (great for its price) but the UHD screen is problematic, maybe consider buying FHD

I have also noticed the screen flickering when I highlight text on the UHD.. It doesn't bother me right now, but I could see how it can annoy someone.. Hopefully a simple driver update can fix it

For those of you who are unsure whether or not to buy the Y50, it seems like most of the problems everyone is experiencing can be fixed by lenovo with driver updates. But I'm no expert so I can't say for sure or if lenovo actually cares to fix some minor problems. If you buy the UHD model you'll experience scaling problems that should be fixed in a few months as 4k becomes more popular around Christmas
