Oh and i have no idea if it will start, it can have a lock in the bios preventing this modification.
I have the same issue, and i think that i will upgrage to intel wifi.
-
Yeah, description looks fine. I still am on the fence and cant decide whether to buy or not cos I am not sure bios would accept it or not
-
Probably won't work because it's not "Lenovo Approved" or some other BS.
-
I posted on lenovo formum and I got a reply that y50 with this card has excellent range and performance.I think that I will order this card this week and try it on my y50, there is a return policy in my shop so if it won't run I will be able return it. I will post the results if I do it.
And I will also contact lenovo and ask if it will void my guarantee, there are no stickers so probably not but i want to be sure.

I don't know if anyone's posted this but Intel released (on Aug 20) a new driver for the 3160 (as well as the 7260):
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&FamilyId=1783&ProductID=3776&ProdId=3776
I removed the OEM Lenovo drivers via Device Manger, updated and it has (so far, fingers crossed,) made the wireless card usable again. It doesn't cut out every 10 minutes when streaming video or playing a file from a LAN server and seems to get decent speed. I'd strongly recommend trying it out! -
hey guys, what app that have the dust removal option just like in the energy management app of the previous y510p,, the fan will run at full speed yet immediate cooling after gaming..
i see other lenovo laptops with same version of energy management as this y50 has that option in it... -
I believe the "watchdog" it is referring to is the Intel XTU service that resets any changes if the computer crashes... That's... Actually pretty damn funny xD
-
Wow man. Thanks and good luck. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it works. Please keep me updated. -
I think its in the lenovo settings app.
-
Does anyone know how to turn off the touchpad ?
-
There is an xtu watchdog, but that's not thE problem since nothing was reset in xtu afterwards. This dpc watchdog violation is a detector in windows itself that usually is triggered by an error in firmware. But yeah I initially thought Aidan was screwing around with me lol xD

Does anyone know which wifi cards are white listed ? -
Ah, guess I should've taken a minute to do some research instead of posting right away
I take it you already reinstalled drivers and ran "sfc /scannow" in the command prompt? -
Does anyone know if this Bios will fix the 48hz issue
That's the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger -
I contacted Lenovo the other day. They told me it's a hardware limitation. So no fix will ever be available.
-
At least not officially supported by Lenovo, but maybe someone will figure a way to allow the screen to use 60hz correctly.
Also maybe eventually when 4k displays are more available we could replace the display as well with a better one.
Regardless, this laptop is really nice to me. It stays cool when gaming, relative to the fact it's a laptop. I don't get over 74c when playing BF4 for over 30 minutes. Also, it's a laptop within a low budget (for gaming) so you can't really expect it to outperform those priced at $1500+ -
Well...I guess the problem is WHERE the limitation is. Is it the display-panel? Or something in between that simply doesn't have the bandwidth to shuffle those pixels. Hopefully it's just the panel, then we might be able to just buy a new one.
Yeah, it seems like an awesome laptop. I'm probably gonna get one(UHD) in a week or two. It's mainly gonna be used for programmering so the 48Hz doesn't bother me too much. When I play games on it, 95% of the time it will probably be hooked up to my 24" 1080p screen anyway, to I get 60Hz. -
If that panel is limited to 48hz in the hardware, there's no changing that. Not without replacing the PCB which is attached along the whole side of the panel anyway. So it would be impossible to do anything unless there's a possibility of changing data within the chips on that PCB. To do so would require a hell of a lot of work.
Hopefully they'll be available sometime soon. I'd personally rather have a 1440p one in this laptop. Pixels would be nearly invisible and you'd be able to keep the panel at a high refresh rate while still getting decent framerates in games... -
Can anyone confirm that the 4k model can reach 60hz on an external moniter? I'm planning on getting a moniter to play games on, but I'd like to know 100% before I drop the cash
-
48 Hz refresh rate is a property (/limitation) of the 4k panel and not the laptop. You can attach a 120 Hz monitor and the laptop would drive it at the monitor's refresh rate. I own the 4k model, and my external ASUS monitor is currently working at 60 Hz.
PS: I love this machine

Hi, I played Dota 2 on 1920x1080 max details and after 5 min the screen starts lagging/spiking. I have UHD y50 with qualcomm wifi, 4710 i7 and sshd 1tb. Can you tell me where is the problem? I think it might be :
1) qualcomm atheros wifi card just suck ( loosing packets etc). (Ill try ping in cmd)
2) cpu throttling? ( 4710 i7, 1.13 bios) I would try throttlestop but i dont know how to set it right :/
3) SSHD ? I read there something about it and I think this is the problem.. Is there some way how to fix this? ( or only fix is replace with ssd?) -
Yeah I figured that much. Isn't the display a Samsung? (According to something I've read) Would there be any way to ask Samsung if it's a hardware limitation, since Lenovo either doesn't know, or doesn't care to give a true answer. Seeing as this is marketed towards gamers, you would expect them to know the diff between 48/60/144+hz.
Anyway the laptop is awesome to me -
I updated every driver except the intel graphics, which doesn't let me, and the realtek ones because they are up to date already. tried sfc/scannow before but didn't let me and said must be admin in console session, does that mean I have to boot into safe mode?
-
Please let this be the end of this matter, getting tired of seeing this on every page.m1ko likes this.

Hey, for those who went with the Y50 with normal HD storage but wanted the 512 GB SSD right now the Samsung EVO 500 GB have the lowest price ever had at Amazon: $199, I dont think that price will last long.

You deleted all of those listed? -
so I started my my Y50 today and when I opened Chrome I noticed that it doesn't scale properly anymore even with the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" box ticked..
-
Just have to right click on the bottom left start menu button and press the one that starts command prompt as an admin. I can't remember if it was already there or if I ticked a setting that put it there... If it's not, search for "cmd" in the search in the top right and right click on that.
By updated drivers, you mean you have the newest ones directly from the Nvidia site, right? -
I did/would.
Download and run PC Decrapifier. That should speed up the process immensely. You just tick each program that you want to remove and it'll streamline the process. Some of the ones you ticked are uninstalled without you having to press anything. Others you just have to go through a few steps in the default uninstallation program, but it'll bring up that program for you to make it easy. -
so i just noticed that a new bios update is out for the y50, i don't understand what the changes are that are stated in the changelog. but here is the link for the new bios update http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/pro...enovo-y-series-laptops/y50-70-notebook-lenovo

Everything is OK for me except facebook. It looks so blurry. I thought I started to get blurry vision.

I just uninstalled user manuals, majic transfer and mcaffee, the rest are still there. I've just had my laptop for a week so I haven't checked all the software installed yet. But most likely I'll be keeping the lenovo applications except for browser guard and phone companion.

I'm buying a laptop for college, mostly programming, games, movies, etc. I'm trying to decide between Lenovo IdeaPad Y50 (i5/non touch FHD TN glossy/8GB/GTX860M 4GB) and Acer Aspire V5-573G (i5/FHD IPS matt/8GB/GTX750M 4GB).
Do you recommend the Y50? Is the screen really that bad? -
Sorry if this is obvious, but what is the best/easiest way to update all the drivers on the Y50? Is there an app like Dell has that can scan your laptop and tell you what the available updates/drivers are? Or do you have to just manually download every driver update from the Lenovo support site (right now there's probably >30)?
Also, is the NVIDIA driver update on the Lenovo support site from 7/2/14 not the latest and thus everyone needs to use the YouTube video to be able to download the latest one? Thanks for your help. -
Just installed the latest BIOS update and the clicking fan noise is NOT fixed....balls
-
Best way is to download them all from the website. There should be just 12 of them. Just make sure you change the box at the top to your operating system. If you bought the laptop and haven't done anything with it as far as OS changes go, you'll have Windows 8.1 64 bit. Download all of those drivers (except for the Nvidia one, the and the one that isn't for your specific wifi card). You can get Nvidia drivers from nvidia.com (quick link to download: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/340.52/340.52-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe)dockt likes this.

I have definitely seen better screens than the Y50. I had to change the calibration a lot just to make it somewhat satisfying for me. One of the problems that I have with it, if i'm playing a game and it's on a dark area, I can't hardly see anything.
-
anyone have any clue?
-
Thanks! So no more need to go to YouTube for that NVIDIA driver ie its straight forward now?
-
Hey, did you have the chance to try that wifi card out? -
If you have any Nvidia card that is still supported by Nvidia (not sure how far back they go) you ALWAYS get the drivers from Visual Computing Leadership from NVIDIA.
I'm not sure what this YouTube thing you are talking about. -
Sorry I wasn't clear. Evidently there was a problem downloading the "newest" NVIDIA drivers so there was a tutorial on this on YouTube. Not sure if this is still an issue, but will follow your recs. Thanks.
-
Nope, my store had a sudden stockout. If i manage to get this card it will be probably at the end of next week.

how do you guys keep the rubberized part of the inside laptop clean? whenever i wipe it to try and clean it, it leaves marks.
