Did a quick search through the thread, but it appears noone has asked about it before. Anyone knows if it is possible to find a battery with higher capacity, to replace the stock one and extend battery life? The only one I found so far is here (no advertising, just for reference). It has 8 cells (instead of 4) while keeping the same capacity with the stock one, which is strange. Laptop spec sheet on manufacturers site claims 5 hours of work form a standard battery (not on US site but on NL and Russian versions, could be a translation mistake though), which led me to a thought that there might be an extended one.

I'd just like to point out a few things about power usage:
On the Power Saver mode, here's the power usage on the processor according to the Intel IPPET tool.
Power range while idling is between 1W and 2W
On average, it uses 2W while typing.
Moving mouse around on a blank page (without any mouse events from moving the mouse over an object) ranges from 2.2W to 2.7W
Moving mouse around and over objects depends on the object. Moving it over the items in the IPPET page brings it up to 3.8W.
Moving mouse over webpage tabs in Chrome brings it up to 7W (this is starting to get interesting...)
Changing between programs and loading things takes more.
On the Balanced mode:
Idling is 3.2W to 3.5W
Typing is about 3.7W
Moving mouse is about 3.7W to 3.9W
Moving mouse over items in IPPET brings it up to between 4.2W and 4.4W
Moving mouse over webpage tabs it goes up to 7W again
Again, opening a program (not switching to) spikes the power usage. But it's only a spike; it doesn't stay that way for long.
Now on to High Performance:
Idling is 3.7W on average
Typing is between 3.5W and 5W, making an average of about 4.2W
Moving mouse is about 4.5 to 5.5W
Moving mouse over IPPET things brings it up to 6W
Moving mouse over webpage tabs, it averages between 13W and 14W !!!
Opening Thunderbird spiked usage to 14W
All this was done on the battery with the B156HAN1.2 screen two clicks below max brightness. Note that screen shouldn't affect processor power usage, which is what was being recorded in these tests. Chrome was open with 13 tabs (yes, I was using all of them). No other programs were open and all start-up items disabled except for the ELAN driver program.
I also noticed a lot more jumping to higher frequencies in High Performance than the others.
While plugged in, you will get the best performance from the 860M if you change the mode to High Performance. Just make sure to change it before you unplug from the wall.
If I'm playing on battery, I usually play some of the simpler games such as Minecraft. Playing on the integrated graphics is a good idea with games like that if you're on the battery. Setting it to Power Saver in such a situation is fine, but sometimes it doesn't give the performance you want. Sometimes I'll set it to Balanced for portable gaming. I haven't done much testing of games while on the battery, so I can get back to you on that at a later date.
In conclusion, always use Power Saving while on battery to decrease power consumption and last longer unplugged

I'm really thinking about this laptop and I might be able to get a better deal for the top UHD-version, without the SSD though(I would just install that myself later) through my school but the only thing that concerns me is the battery life. I feel like I need 3 hours of battery(MINIMUM) for class. If the class starts and I forgot to plug in I don't want to start and fiddle with power outlets. The battery needs to hold until class is over and I can plug in. It's a pretty bright classroom so I guess the screen will have to go 60%+. I've seen alot of people reaching 4.5 hours pretty easily and I've seen people STRUGGLING to get 1 hour :S

Hey guys does the text on facebook and some other pages look blurry using chrome on your end too or there is a fix for it? Also is there a way to install lenovo settings app after doing clean install of win 8.1?
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk -
Yes, windows 8.1 seems to automatically set the DPI of programs differently.
To fix this, go to the desktop, and right click:
Personalize > Display
Click "Let me choose one scaling level for all of my displays"
and pick either small/medium/large.
(I find that medium is the best)pecemece likes this. -
So I just installed my 500 gb SSD and my lenovo onekey no longer works all I did was use the migration tool that came with the samsung ssd. Does anyone know how to get it to work?
-
This most likely happened because partition sizes changed. In order to get it back try this thread for solution. It's a bit aged but might help.

Ahoy , I purchased the Lenovo y50 4k from microsoft store and after using it for 2 weeks returned it. ( mainly because of 48 hz lock )
I didnt find a better laptop at similar price point so i am thing of gettinf a y50 again. some questions
1. Is the 48 hz issue still not fixed ? ( will it be permanent )
2. Is there a FHD version with IPS display ? -
After using my UHD-version at school the last couple of days, the batterylife lasted between 3-4 hours. This was when using word, chrome, generally mixed light tasks. Screen brightness quite low, but still not totally dimmed, powersaver option enabled. I have no problems with this batterylife considering its power capabilities.
My experience so far (UHD, 512GB SSD, 4GB 860M, 16GB RAM, i7-4710):
-The UHD-screen is beautiful. Calibrated using a template from the calibration thread. The yellows are better but not perfect.
-Some programs won't scale properly. I tried 1080p and scaled everything down, which worked good. Looks nice, but not as crisp as the 4k-resolution. 1080p fixed the scaling problems, but I prefer 4k since most programs I use are usable.
-The 48Hz lock really doesn't bother me. I play alot of BF4 and can't really notice the frequency lock. It just runs perfectly smooth IMO.
-The 512GB SSD is really fast and speeds up normal usage tasks. 518MB/s read, somewhere between 400-500MB/s write after benchmarking.
-It is portable, quite big IMO, but slim and relatively light. Looks good aswell
-Haven't had any problems with the keyboard. Might be that it just suits my way of writing.
-Good speakers!
-I have Synaptics touchpad and it works good. Not as good as touchpads on macbooks, but ok for normal tasks.
-The CPU does throttle to 2,5GHz when the temperature rises.
-Still after 1 hour of BF4 the GPU was max 69 degrees celcius, and the CPU was 72 degrees.
All in all, for me this laptop really works like a charm in every way (so far). Portability, decent batterylife, yet alot of power with an ok pricetag
-

Same reactions as above. I have found that the generic synaptics driver is MUCH MUCH (did I say MUCH? ) better than the lenovo one.
Unfortunately you'll have to temporarily disable driver signature enforcement to install it. A pain, but worth the effort, if you want 2 finger tap for right click for example.
My only issue is with the Bluetooth card (atheros). My Microsoft sculpt touch bluetooth mouse takes 10 secs to 'wake up' and work properly each time it idles for 30 seconds, yet works perfectly on my desktop pc. Can't tether my phone via bluetoot either. Any white-listed alternatives to this crap? Bluetooth support in 8.1 seems appalling.... -
I managed to broke my screen frame after replacing the screen and now the left bottom side of the frame doesn't sit tight. I guess I pushed too hard. It is not that big deal, but I feel bad. Is it possible to get a new frame?

Hey Guys,
Looking into picking up the Y50 touch. I've tried to read through the pages, but I need to make my decision soon as the Y50 touch model is 100 dollars off right now.
Hows the touch screen quality? I have read about screen issues, but is this for the 1080p touch model? Is it just the bad viewing angles, or is the colour reproduction and saturation bad as well?
Also, if I were to use the laptop on low brightness, in power saver mode, around how many hours would I get?
Is the back easily removable to swap in an SSD? I have a samsung series 7 which is a pain in the butt to remove the back, since they are clipped in. So hoping this one is easier.
My other option is the Asus N550JK, but in Canada the touch model is not available.
Thanks for the help! -
Hey Guys!
I'm new to this forum and a new lenovo y50-70 owner. I noticed that my wifi-signal is going up and down and my internet speed correlates to that. I got the Realtek RTL8723BE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I also noticed some package loss in battlefield 4 for example which leads to some hiccups and stutters. Any ideas or solutions? I got a 75mbit internet and i only get between 20-40. As I said there are huge drops. -
Can some one please confirm the quality of the 1080p IPS panel on the Y50. Just released.
Lenovo Y50 59418226 15.6" Notebook Computer (Black)
EDIT:
Thank you answered below. -

It's not an IPS - any vendor at this point that has IPS on a standard Y50 non-4k is inaccurate. The model 59418226 is your standard Full HD TN Display. -
I can confirm that all the stuttering issues that I was having while gaming have went away since installing the ssd so I guess we can all say the SSHD is causing some sort of issue. Even the audio delay I was getting have went away as well so that's an added bonus. Perfectly happy with the y50 as of now.

So sick of this laptop...
As I reported earlier I'd been having problems where the computer would connect to my wireless router but I wouldn't have internet access. Fixed that by changing some advanced settings for the wireless card. Well I guess I just can't leave well enough alone, so I installed the BIOS update yesterday...
...and now I periodically get disconnected from the router. I am honestly so fed up with this POS computer at this point, and I'm pretty sure I'll never purchase another Lenovo laptop again. -
Hey, i just purchased a Lenovo Y50 today. Does anyone else have a problem with their keyboard? Around the center of the keyboard (pretty much every key that is close to the 'G' key) pressing down on it gives a 'trampoline' effect and is very noticeable. Pressing down on the key also produces a different sound than keys near the edges of the keyboard.
It'd be great if anyone could let me know if they have a similar problem, since i'm considering returning the laptop for this reason. -
KlickOnline Company Representative
It sounds more like a compatibility issue with your router and the wireless card. You shouldn't have had to change any advanced settings to get internet access on any normal network - have you thought about changing your router? -
anyone fixed the clicking noise coming from the big fan while idling?
-
Not sure about hours, but if you're not doing much (just reading or typing), I would expect to get between 4 and 5 hours.
Back is easy to remove. Just unscrew 12 (I think) screws and it comes right off.
Did you do a fresh install or clone the old drive? The answer to that may eliminate a possibility.
I've only had problems with my router at home. It seemed like if I put the laptop in the right position, it would work flawlessly. The router is pretty old though. 2007-ish. Every other router it's worked on without issue but those other routers are all under 3 years old. I think it'd be better to replace the router than the computer...
I haven't ever had a problem. Sure, the keyboard depresses around the keys pressed down a bit. Doesn't really affect functionality. The sound is pretty much the same for me though. Depends on how I hit the keys. Sometimes I hit it a bit harder and it gives a different sound. Still. Not really an issue as it doesn't affect how it works... -
Hey guys, I´ve noticed the stuttering issue with my Y50 the other day as well. I have mine for 2 months now, and this only happens when playing COD Ghosts... Everything else so far (BF3, BF4, LoL, COD BO 1&2) didnt have that problem. It freezes every few minutes for 4-5 seconds, sometimes twice within a couple seconds... pretty annoying -.-' But I have a SSD, so its not the drive´s fault.
I´ve monitored my GPU Core load and Core clock, the load is always somewhere between 80-99% and spiking down to 0-40% during the freezes. The clock is permanently at 550 (why?!) -
Possibly throttling from heat... Turn on VSync in the game and see if that gets rid of the issue.
-
Yes it probably is a compatibility issue, but why should this be a problem with a wireless card as new as the Intel 7260? My old laptop (a Sager NP8130) worked just fine with this router...had zero problems. Then I buy a new and supposedly "better" computer, and I have problems with things as basic as wireless connectivity. Since my old laptop and other wireless devices all work fine with the router, the problem is this piece of junk Lenovo computer (and/or the supposedly wonderful Intel wireless card).
-
A computer isn't junk because you're having hiccups with the wireless. Have you tried using the internet with it hard wired? I was having issues with my Verizon router and my wireless, still pretty sure its the wireless card in mine but i have the 3160. Hard wiring works amazingly well.
This is the issue I was having, however it went away after hardwiring.
If changing your router doesn't work, invest in an external USB wireless card. The amazing pricepoint on the y50 should be enough to not warrant switching. -
Yeah I cloned the drive from the old sshd I have. I tried clean install and factory reset with the old sshd and nothing got rid of the problems but the ssd did keeping my fingers crossed not trying to jinx myself haha.
-
Awesome, so that means it was the hard drive after all and not just a fresh install that caused it to work
-
Hey guys, any software for updating all drivers easily? Thanks.
-
Has any one bought the Lenovo IdeaPad Y50-70 (this is the full name over here) in Europe (Germany)?
Because in reviews I'm seeing that if the FHD screen is non-touch then it has matte coating.
But here all the non-touch screens have glossy finish, so I'm wondering if it's maybe a different panel. -
Got mine on Amazon.de, non-touch FHD, definately matte.
-
On this site all of them are glossy (even the non-touch).
http://www.computeruniverse.net/en/list.asp?searchname=y50-70&gcc=de -
Could be a typo.... There have been worse
-
Yeah, most likely their mistake... Like some other vendors who claimed they have FHD IPS screens..
-
I'm not sure that it's a mistake. In my country (Croatia) the i5 version has this written in the specs: 15,6'' FHD (1920x1080) Glare LED backlight Display.
And every store in the country has that same screen listed.
It also has a regular 1TB HDD (no SSHD). -
No, you just have to install them manually either from Lenovo's website or from the manufacturer's website.
-
Not that I can think of... And it's really not that time consuming to download and run each one. 5 minutes maybe? And if you really don't want to take that much time, you could just use Windows Update and check the optional downloads that are drivers. You'll still probably have to download the drivers from the Nvidia website anyway.
-
So do I go with custom installation and clean instead of express, right?
-
It's up to you. Doesn't really matter. Express just puts everything on there. It doesn't put junk on though, unless you consider the Nvidia Experience program to be junk. The Clean checkbox just uninstalls the old driver and wipes every trace of it off the system instead of just replacing files. Again, it's up to you.
-
Did you find any solution? I also got the Realtek one and it seems pretty slow compared to Intel ones... I might end up replacing it in the future if there's no improvement with a new driver...
-
So I have been researching this laptop for almost 2 weeks now and I think it's aboit time I actually grow some balls and buy it. But I still feel there is a catch, I mean the model I want to buy (4k touch) seems very underpriced compared to other 3k+ gaming laptops eg. Msi ghost pro 3k and the razer blade. At first I thought it was because of the 870m but surely an upgrade to that card won't cost $500 (plus the model I want also hase and SSD!) even other laptops with 860m are more expensive.
So what do you guys think? Do lenovo just put a slim profit margain or do other manufacturers just set exaggerated prices? And what do you think the "catch" is? -
The real catch is a mixture of a few things. Number one is lenovo is more of a mass producer than say MSI so they will get better prices on materials and a cheaper assembly rate. 2 is the 870m is more expensive by at least $100. Number 3 and probably one of the biggest one is the quality of the parts used. The MSI screen is beautiful gets a full 60fps and has no issues. The y50 screen is cheap and capped at 48hz and has a yellowish tint to it. All in all they are both great laptops. If I were to buy a y50 I would swap out the screen myself. But I am using an N550jk until the new Asus models are released.
-
The 860m on this laptop is on the motherboard and not just connected to it. You can't replace it.
-
Are you sure you really want 4k model? As was stated before the panel quality is not that great compared to MSI for example. And you won't be able to replace this panel as easily as if you buy 1080p version. There are various replacement options for 1080p while none still confirmed 4k replacement panel due to connector issues. All things above refer to non-touch panels, no touch replacement versions were found so far.
-
I would reqlly like to get a 4k laptop as I feel in 3-4 years time all laptops will be in that resolution, as for the screen replacement issues I will get the laptop shipped to Egypt from America, so I will not be able to find any screen repalcements so far

New drivers out for:
-Bluetooth and Modem
-Intel Rapid Storage Technology
-Atheros/Broadcom/Realtek WLAN driver
-Lenovo Energy Management
Note: these are only for Windows 7! -
What is the software to use the integrated webcam? I'm trying to take a picture. Thanks.

Hi, just popping in to say that the atheros bluetooth dongle is so crappy that I've happily transformed it into my motioninjoy device (Dualshock 3). It worked after tweaking the .inf and I can now use the controller wirelessly.
Edit motioninjoy's inf with this at the end of each "dongle" section and don't forget to boot without driver signature verification to install:
%MIJ.DeviceName%=CC_Install, USB\VID_0CF3&PID_3004
I've popped in a tiny Trust BT 4.0 dongle in on of the FEW usb ports (
) but now my microsoft sclupt touch mouse (BT) works perfectly.
Later dudes.
I can now freakin' play Dark Souls II in 4K and wireless controller. LOVE IT! -
Hi guys, I have the Y50 and I recently discovered that my laptop gets limited to 30FPS when not on AC power. Does anyone know how to get past this? I know my battery will go quickly but I only wanna play a game for around 45 mins when I'm on the train home from uni. Cheers
