this's a awesome laptop, even though the 860m is not as good as 755 sli on y510p, cause its still good at gaming performance for most people, and its way more coller and more quiet than the y510p (i think ). really hoping to receive it next month <'3

Wooh, I think I finally fixed it at least for minecraft. Apparently I was linking the minecraft shortcut instead of minecraft.exe in the nvidia control panel.
My frames are so so though for borderlands 2, but I'll keep trying to play around with that hopefully, and download CS:GO and see if I get similar results as some of the videos posted. -
exactly, that's why I keep thinking you are using integrated graphicsEarlcooo likes this.

How many USB slots on it? I am planning on plugging in 2 dongles, one for wireless mouse and one for headset

DO you use Optimus to limit your fps to 60? I wonder if you are achieving an unnecessarily high fps on that game; with those settings, I'm under the impression that a high fps could easily cause higher than normal temps. An expert can correct me if I'm wrong!

Repeat request:
Anybody planning on manually upgrading to IC Diamond thermal paste and/or extra copper cooling? Could you please, PLEASE post a step-by-step guide with pictures and/or a good video tutorial? Please??? I am especially interested in the IC Diamond thermal paste upgrade, as I've read that it can lower max temps on both the CPU and GPU anywhere from 5-10 degrees Celsius! -
Just posted this in the Y50 Thread:
Make a removable laptop water cooler! And other cool devices
This is pretty amazing, actually. Hmm. -
You da man, it worked!
-
Glad it worked out bro! enjoy
So what did you do and what were your results? -
The 860m is faster at most times and sometimes just about 5% behind compared to the 755sli. But give the 860m a mild overclock and it will outrun the 755sli with ease.
And with the 860m you got no:
-Micro stutter
-Heat problems
-Sli incompatibly
-No need to remove the second gpu to be able to use the intel gpu for better battery life
So it's would say the 860m is a lot better compared to the 755sliunclewebb, LanceAvion and Banender like this. -
Cheeky. Yes i should have probably looked harder, but I guess that served me well before when the optical drive was listed as internal and when one of the models was listed with an 880m didn't it?

Does an oc'd 860m beat 870m non o'c? And is lenovo y50 build quality better than clevo sager np8268s??

Basically went to nvidia control panel, added the exe, used vsync.
So, is thos thread for y50 owners only, or is tbhis a general info thread? -
Yes and yes, but you need to pay attention to cooling solutions; upgrade the thermal paste. Somebody claimed (I think they actually proved it with screen shots, but you'll have to Google it; there is a thread in these forums with similar findings called "860m is a beast" or something like that) to actually match stock 880m performance, all because the 860m's cool GPU temps and Maxwell architecture allow for staggering OC potential. The trick is that the CPU of the Y50 can, at [seemingly rare, you're-asking-for-it] times, run VERY HOT, and everybody is trying to find solutions to that "problem" (not a normal prob, though; people are running Crysis 3 at high 1080p, 42fps with very cool temps).
Sager uses top-end internals and bottom-of-the-barrel externals. However, because they are designed with such bulkiness, they often provide excellent cooling. The y50 is beautifully designed, and very well built, but being an ultrabook, it is also more difficult to cool. -
I find the Y50 extremely well at cooling. All the benchmarks that I've done never had temps higher than 80c for the GPU. It ranged from 57c-74c and averaged 72c most of the time on triple AAA titles (BF4, Crysis 3). Even on Overclock, the ventilation is excellent. The keyboard barely gets warm and the wrist area and around the trackpad is cool the whole time. If I know how to apply thermal paste I would just to make it a couple degrees cooler.
-
I've read that IC Diamond lowers temps by as much as TEN DEGREES CELSIUS! But more often around five degrees, which is still pretty huge. Yeah, the video reviews I've seen show excellent temps. Example: Lenovo Y50 15.6" Gaming Laptop Review - YouTube But then I read people in this and other forum threads reporting dangerously high temps. I don't know!
-
Yea I also have this problem. I make music a lot so this will get quite annoying, so do you know of any solutions to eliminate the white noise?

top end internals? you mean how they cheaped you out on using aluminum heatsinks instead of copper?
but as shown by pulse123 before under double max load the CPU is still very much of a concern. -
So I just received my y50 today from Klick, plugged charger into the wall and nothing. No lights light up, power button doesn't do anything, and I tried multiple outlets. Any suggestions? All the connectors are firmly in place.
EDIT: pulled out a voltmeter and got a reading from the power brick so that is working. Called Lenovo support who instructed me to hold the power button and press the button right next to it with no success. Did I get a DOA unit somehow?

My y50 is doing great so far. The wasd area does get warm when playing games, but nothing to worry about. The top is def a finger print magnet. Temps have been great, but I am in a lab so yeah. Planetside 2 has been running like crap though.

Is anyone else having wireless issues with the Intel wireless ac 3160 on this thing? I'm getting frequent drops, poor signal, and often times refusal to authenticate with my router (ASUS RT-N16 2.5ghz) while my Thinkpad x220 with Intel Centrino advanced-n 6205 has no problem.
I have tried the following:
- Updated to latest 17.0.3 June 2nd, 2014 drivers off the intel website.
- Tried rolling back to default drivers
- Installed the Windows 8.1 Update
I get a stable but extremely slow connection if I force the wifi adapter to use only 802.11g (Advanced --> HT Mode --> Disabled)
Do I have a defective wireless adapter? -
Okay I need help, Lenovo touch or non-touch or MSI GTX870 ghost/stealth. I'm gonna order today.
***Edit*** I change my mind, no MSI for me. So is the flex bad on the touch model?
So here's my choice, get the SSD non touch with 4GB of V-RAM and 16GB system RAM or the touch with hybrid drive and 8GB of system and 2GB of V-RAM

Other people are saying that Lenovo is notorious for crap drivers, especially with WiFi, which often arrives (allegedly) broken out of the box. The solution, or so I read, is merely to do a full windows OS reset and let Windows install all drivers; apparently this fixes a whole host of potential problems you may or may not run into with Lenovo!
-
Definitely nontouch 4gb vram and 16gb ram
-
Is the quality any different? It appears that they are. I don't know though for sure.

Has anyone already tried Linux on Y50?
I'm considering this notebook but I need one which runs well Linux.
Thank you
-
I think that the msi is slimmer and may have better build quality. The msi also has more storage ability versus the y59. The Y50 wins in temps and noise though from what I observed.
-
Nice thanks but I was referring to the touch and non touch Y50. I decided I wanna get the Y50 because it is less expensive.

Same laptop. Flex is almost nonexistent. Touch has a pretty, flat, edge-to-edge glass screen (just prettier than the non-glare, which has a slightly protruding bezel, but that's purely a cosmetic preference. The glossy finish, many people feel, allows colors to pop more. Plus, you get the added touch-functionality that Windows Store apps and the metro interface (and our new smartphone/tablet/universal app world) is designed for and around. The trade-off is that the touch model is half a pound heavier and highly reflective in bright light.vahdyx likes this.

Okay screw it, placed an order today for the Non-touch Lenovo Y50 with the SSD from Klick. I hope I'm happy with it

Just got my Y50 Touch from Klick!
I haven't used Windows 8.1 at all up until this point. Does it always come with that much bloatware? I'm considering buying a copy of Win 8.1 just to have a fresh install. -
errr.. why do you need to buy win8 it comes with your laptop
i dont own a y50 but im sure there is a product key somewhere? so you can reset/reinstall windows all you want. The price you pay for today's laptop includes the operating system.
they dont include a cd but product key instead. You can just reset windows which is easier or download it for free type in the product key when asked -
to current owners can you please post a sample shot of the webcam quality? im into video calls a lot and a quality webcam is impt to me, hoping that the internal 720p webcam is decent?
-
You were absolutely right. A clean install of 8.1 fixed the WiFi issues. I let Windows detect and install drivers for the wireless adapter and it works great. It ended up installing older drivers (version 16) but they work just fine.
To others- A clean install of 8.1 is definitely recommended. Everything is just faster. -
Very nice. Is MSI afterburner all that's required to overclock it?
I'm not worried about the cooling. It seems more than capable under normal use. The only thing I wish Lenovo did was flip the insides so it didn't heat up the WASD keys, but it's currently pretty usable. -
You can find Windows 8.1 update 1 if you search for "en_windows_8.1_with_update_x64_dvd_4065090.iso"
No harm downloading because the legal key is embedded into your laptop. It should work for the Y50, assuming it uses the same 8.1 as my Y510P does. -
Yes or you can use nVidia Inspector which has it's own cool features but both can do the same thing.
-
Not sure if you're aware, but the 4K model was just released. If you have a couple hundred more to spare, you can upgrade your screen. Klick said they might have pricing for it soon.

Anybody done some gaming using a laptop cooling pad? How does that affect the heat? Specifically on the WASD keys?
-
Son of a ! And of course it shipped today so I can't cancel! Ugh... Just my luck! Tracking number and everything. Does Kilck have a number?

Email Brian and explain your situation, he is usually very quick to respond. You'll probably just have to ship it back to them to get a refund. Not sure how it works.

Haha! I just got mine last week and haven't even had a chance to open it yet... not going to return it at this point, however I feel your frustration.
I'm hoping that if the 4k panels are THAT MUCH better (probably unlikely) that I'll be able to order the part and swap it out myself, assuming they're compatible. -
How taxing is 4k on the gpu compared to normal 1920x1080? is it worth getting or will you notice the difference in fps compared to the normal y50
-
Has anyone found a fix for the white noise through the audio output? Or is it not present at all for some people?
I'd really hate to end up with white noise while listening to something quiet or ambient.Earlcooo likes this. -
Can someone with an SSD model confirm the brand and model of their drive? Thanks for being so obliging, Y50 owners!
