Phew! So Brian was able to cancel my order just in time. However he's gonna have to refund the money. Great customer service too.

Also shouldnt the write speeds be around 500? That looks slower than from benchmarks and reviews I've read

So for all those out there curious about how the display is...

Confirmation: the version of the Y50 with the optical drive does indeed come with an external Blu-ray drive. Unfortunately the build quality is nothing special. And it's not a slot-loading drive, which was what I was hoping for.
As for the laptop... I got it right before I had to leave for work, so I didn't get to play around with it much. But wow, this machine is beautiful. It totally puts the other gaming laptops on the market to shame.
I may the do review I mentioned toward this weekend. We'll see if I have time. -
I went ahead and ordered the Lenovo Y50 with 4K today. I know I feel a little guilty but I figured since they stated it'll be here in my house in 10-12 days vs shipping in 10-12 I'll just go for it. Should arrive in a couple weeks.

My Y50 has not shipped yet. This greatly concerns me. Can somebody with a Y50 tell me just how bad this is? Because it seems not just "average" but actually, honestly, truly BAD. I'm fine with compromises for price (e.g., an older WiFi card, no display port, etc.), but not outright BAD components.
I have a ViewSonic VX2250WM-LED 22-Inch monitor for a desktop, and my old laptop was a Dell XPS M1530. How bad is the Y50 screen in comparison to what I'm used to? Sort of freaking out, a little... -
I can't for the life of me figure out how to get an SSD in this laptop...
I tried cloning it directly. But it has so many individual partitions that it's almost impossible to clone correctly.
I downloaded the ISO, burned to a disk, plugged in via USB, wouldn't let me install from external Drive.
Can someone who has switched out their 1 TB drive to an SSD let me know step by step what they did to get their SSD in their laI tried booting from a USB, didn't work. -
b) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nokHdiRW1_s -
I went to the website on page 11, typed it in, and it said I cannot upgrade using that key...so I couldn't download the ISO...
Any ideas besides getting the ISO from other sites? I figure the key worked for others?
I'm also considering just going with windows 7...
I know how to install the SSD into the comptuer though, the video above doesn't show the installation of the software.
Can you give a STEP BY STEP guide on what you did (Software wise, I can install the hardware/take apart the case etc) -
Here is a breakdown of my questions:
1) How did you get the key you pulled from the HDD to work with the windows update program microsoft provided, it did not work with the key I got
2) Did you fresh install 8.1 onto the HDD then clone? Or just a fresh install onto the SSD
3) How did you get it to boot from a USB, mine keeps saying it is blocked/or no media installed. -
-
TN = bad viewing angles especially vertical (annoying)
Color gamut = maybe slightly worse colors especially coming from a "good monitor" but if you are not editing photos or anything you either won't notice anything or you will get used to it fast
another thing, its matte so it may be a bit "darker" or "washed out" - but me personally i don't care about that as matte has its own benefits (i prefer a bit "washed out" screen cuz of the matte foil than a big glare on the screen) -

Hello all,
So I received my Y50 touch yesterday afternoon and got a couple hours to play around with it and I must say that I am impressed with the system and overall build quality of the laptop.
As for Win 8.1, it's going to take a lot of patience to learn it and all of the touch functions. I'm glad that I bought the laptop earlier so I have time to learn how to use the system before school starts in Sept.
Speaking about Win 8.1,one of the things that I noticed during unboxing was the lack of any installation CDs or DVDs whatsoever. Being relatively new to Win 8.1 and all, my first question is how do you backup your system or how are you guys upgrading your systems if you don't have a physical Windows installation disc? Or did I miss something while unboxing and do I need to go back and look for the disc in the box somewhere? Just really confused about this. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, about games, where do you guys usually buy games from? I haven't been into PC gaming in a long time and the only games that I currently have are free versions of BF3 and access to the beta of BF Hardline. I noticed that the EA / Origin store is having a sale. Do you buy directly from the publishers app or is it cheaper to buy games separately. I guess this all depends on when you buy games and so on. Sorry if this isn't the correct place to discuss this question.
I think that's all of my questions for now, I'm sure I'll have more as I continue to learn and play with the system.
As always, thanks for your help!

Just as an FYI to those installing an SSD
After an almost entire night of failure putting in a Samsung 512GB Pro I have determined the following:
1) You CAN boot into windows 7, Lenovo also has Windows 7 drivers on their website
2) I don't think you can boot from a USB to install an OS, you have to install it before it is plugged in
I have never worked with a lenovo computer, so I tried pressing every button on the keyboard to try to get into the BIOS, after about 1 hour of trying to get into the damn BIOS I looked it up in the manual online and you need to press the NOVO button (The button next to the power button) to get into the BIOS
When you are in the Bios, in order for the computer to boot, you need to put the boot drive as "Compatible" . Mine would NOT boot unless I had it in compatible mode.
I just installed windows 8, but I haven't decided if it is worth it to keep. I'm getting really annoyed with all of the shortcuts that go between the normal start menu and the tabs when using the touch pad.
Overall I'm not very impressed with the screen. Not as crisp as I thought it would be, but I haven't looked a Matte screen in forever. It does do better in the light, but I have decided that I will always go glossy in the future , and TN panels are a lot worse than the IPS panels.
Can anyone tell me any advantage to having windows 8.1 over windows 7? -
for me the security, recovery and performance improvements alone is good enough to stay with 8. you can get bring back the classic start menu, there're many options on google.

Anybody installed a fresh copy of Windows 7? How did that work out? Any issues/conflicts?
-
-
I failed so many times before I went into that part of the bios that I had given up on windows 7 and then failed so many times with 8.1 that I basically don't want to try again.
I will say that the lenovo site has all of the drivers for Windows 7, so it probably wouldn't be an issue.
I might transfer back to windows 7 if windows 8.1 continues to me off. The metro and no aero is the most frustrating thing in the world. -
-
I underestimated the power of the igpu. I'm getting 60+ frames playing modded halo custom edition on green mode.
-
Although it does sound like a pain. Lenovo does not make upgrading these laptops easy. Most other manufacturers have easy-to-open hatches to make it easy to change RAM/HDD. -
-
Its the shortcut stuff where you use multiple fingers or whatever on the track pad
I'm actually not a fan of the track pad. I am too used to the trackpad on my m11x that has texture on it.
I'll try the windows 7 tonight. If it works with no problems then I will put windows 7 on it then too. I got one 512 ssd laying around to just swap out win 8.1 with 7 and then swap back if it doesn't work.
When I tried it I never tried win7 with the compatible bios thing. -
So, I'll make a new thread with a review and a few more of my impressions in the coming days, but until then here are my max overclocking results:
+135 Mem, +500Mhz (1000 effective) on the vRam.
Firestrike: 4009
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4700HQ,LENOVO Lenovo Y50-70
I ran this 3 times back to back. Max CPU temp was 73, and max GPU temp was 60. The cooling in this machine is pretty impressive to me. Idle temps (on balanced power mode) are 43-46 for the CPU, and the fan doesn't ramp up until the low 50s. I'm sure It will be even better when I get intel XTU out and undervolt the CPU just a bit. Compare this to my Razer Blade Pro with the exact same hardware that struggles to idle in the low 50s.fragpic, heibk201, PsylentStorm and 1 other person like this. -

how much is just a bit for you? -
Well looks like the 4k will cost just a bill or two more, sound sources are saying that itll be an IPS too, if that is the case then that is just a no brainier, especially with the subpar FHD screen as per reviews. Glad I didn't purchase one already, I am going to wait it out till the air clears, few more weeks are nothing compared to the 2-4 year investment this laptop will be.

Do any current owners find the 6lb to be too much weight to carry around on a school or commuting day? I'm 5"4 150lb and I'm concerned about the 6lb.
-
In other news, this HDD is trash. Not sure whats going on, but Windows should be done indexing by now (Sitting idle for 4 hours?) and nothing else is running. I'll troubleshoot it for a bit.

Y50 Touch owners. How does the glossy screen compare to a Macbook or Dell?
Matte screen owners are reporting poor colors/vividness. Doh. Need some glossy screen opinions. Thanks! -
-
I just got the y50 Touch yesterday and I've been having weird touch screen problems with it. The drivers for all but one HID driver keep disappearing so my touch screen just stops working at random. They show up as hidden drivers, but aren't active and they say that the hardware isn't connected. Is anyone else having this issue?

Does anyone else find the lip on the bottom of the laptop (the removable backside) mildly irritating that it isn't flush all the way around, and there is a slight "lip" all the way around the laptop.
Or is did I just put it back on incorrectly and it is actually supposed to be flush. -

There's a lot of people complaining about this laptop screen. I might consider to buy an ASUS g550jk, even with it's inferior gtx 850m Gddr3. At least it has a good IPS screen and is the same price as lenovo. What do you guys think?
-
For those owning the Y50 can you please confirm or decline that you can install without any problems the vanilla drivers for NVIDIA GeForce and Intel GPU/WiFi?
Thanks
