Quite nice, most of the times i carry it with one hand, and i dont notice it when it's in my backpack. The build quality is great, but could be better, especially around the touch pad. But if you are using a GAMING laptop without a mouse, you should reconsider your priorities.

I don't think there's a i5 version? My FHD y50 has a i7 and it can run Planetside 2 with all settings at ultra [Excluding fog shadows and a few other things.] Vanu sovereignity represent! Evolve or perish.

Consider that if you plan to buy the UHD version you will have half the performance.

Running games in 1080p on the UHD is also out of the question, since it would run the game with big black corners around the image.

not really, and many people have reported that its even better. Just remember to download all the drivers from Lenovo website.

Seems to crap out pretty often, my laptop came with it broken, dead on arrival. Other than that it's as fast as a regular laptop HDD, or just a bit faster when accessing your most used files.

I'm planning to buy a SSD too, we are having this discussion here:

The only model that's within my budget has an i5 4200h... As I hear its single core performance is close to that of the i7, so Planetside and Total War games should run almost equally.

As for 4k, doesn't changing the desktop resolution before entering a game fix that problem?

Hey guys what's the latest update for the Intel 7260 for this laptop? I'm conflicted between two on the intel site.

There's an Intel driver and "Other" driver (not intel), download the intel one that is of your current OS .

This actually worked, now my ping when I click the network icon, is just the same as before. Perfect! Let's see if that can fix some stuff!
Edit: works for both 2,4GHz and 5,2Ghz network.

sometimes it helps, but most times it doesn't: there have been numerous reports of users that had to play games in a window with giant black borders all around.

What is the normal usage temperatures on this laptop?

My friend has the Y50 with 2GB GPU and ssd installed. I have hdd 5400 rpm and 4GB GPU. While everything else is exactly the same, do he get better benchmark scores for CPU and GPU. He has also lower motherboard and CPU temperatures (around 45C) in normal use where mine is 55-60 all the damn time. He is using W7 and I have W8.1.

Btw the CPU is i7 4710HQ and both laptops are 1 month old.

The downside with the ping fix is that every time I restart the computer, there is something wrong in Windows with the network card. Therefore I have to deactivate and activate the network card on restart.

So guys, hello to everyone. I've bought the Y50-70 a couple of months ago, and I have to say, it's a very good laptop. The only flaw is the network card, which is just plainly terrible (I'm talking about the Atheros Ar956x). I just want to change that card to something else, and I was thinking to a Intel AC-7260 card, but as Iìve seen, there are 2 different version, the PCI-E (HMWB) and the M.2 version (NGW). Which one should I get? This one? + Intel® Wireless-AC 7260 Dual Band 867 Mbit/s WLAN+Bluetooth PCI Express M.2 + | eBay .
    Thanks, much appreciated.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

For anyone having horrible wireless speeds with this card, a link was posted at the very end of that thread:

Intel® Wi-Fi Products — TechNote: Access Point Interoperability Issue with uAPSD

My Y50 has the 7260, but speeds have quite frankly been crap. At home, my router's configuration page consistently shows the connection speed between the router and my laptop to be 5-10 Mb/s. I know the problem is with the laptop because a couple days ago I also connected a different laptop to my home wireless network, and the router was showing 300 Mb/s.

I brought the laptop to work today, and here it was showing in Windows as being connected at anywhere from 40-60 Mb/s. The weird thing is that the speed would fluctuate, and I found this on my home network also.

Well, I just read the linked article and disabled the uAPSD feature in the wireless adapter properties. Voila! My connection speed is now showing a stable 300 Mb/s. I'm hoping the same thing will happen when I get home...

...okay so the initial connection was 300 Mb/s, but now it's dropped to 65 Mb/s. Still, I've never seen it hit 300 Mb/s before, so maybe something helped.

I'm not sure why everyone on this forum is so high on the 7260 card. Yeah it might be better than the other option the Y50 can come with, but after doing some searching around the internet I've noticed a LOT of people are having speed and compatibility issues with this card.

Glad it was useful for you!

The register fix seems to fix my problem with the 7260. There is some speed issues when several wireless devices are connected to the network, but right now I get 90 out of 100Mbps on my laptop with 5Ghz. Around 30Mbps with 2,4Ghz. And it's stable. Couldn't be more happy right now. :)

Has anyone come to a definite color profile to fix the yellows?
It seems some people use some profiles, others other kind of profiles... maybe it's a subjective matter.

I'd have to try different styles and see which one I like the best.

Or has anyone tried with a calibration tool like X-Rite or Spyder? Would these tools fix the problem?

Works just fine for me on a 1600x900 monitor at work. I carry around an HDMI to DVI cable and it runs just fine going to that monitor through DVI, so I assume HDMI would work well too.

If I recall correctly, the yellows were due to something in the panel itself and couldn't be fixed by a color profile or anything like that. The color profile may mitigate the issue, but that's about it. I think someone used a Spyder and got some profile and posted it, but it didn't eliminate the yellow issue. Must be something in the hardware on the panel or the software running the panel's hardware (outside the OS, on a chip on the panel's PCB).

Again, that's just if I'm recalling correctly something from a few weeks ago.

Can anyone please help me with my wifi problem??
I bought this from Brian from Klickonline and have loved everything other than the monitor but bought it knowing that was not perfect

The wireless card I am currently using is Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 3160.
I didn't think this was the issue until I brought out my old computer that was bought in 2003, and the internet was running almost 10x faster then the one on the y50.
I also moved my laptop next to the router and it's running a lot faster.

However I am kind of frustrated at this performance level of wifi on a $1300 machine.
If anyone knows how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Those who have the UHD model, can confirm that the yellow problem is similar to this?

    https://imageshack.com/a/Bnwz/1

I agree that at 10% brightness the yellow is awful, but with >80% brightness I can't see anything wrong with the yellow!

    - Yellows are ugly anyway you look at it (I think my brain has adjusted now, and I barely notice it - ok, so my torch is greenish-orange-brown in Dark Souls II, so what? :D )
    - Atheros is crap. Intel 7260 rocks. Atheros bluetooth is just...useless.
    - It's a great laptop.
On a sidenote, has anyone managed to decode 4K video properly? Nothing I've tried can play Big Buck Bunny in 4K so far (VLC with hardware decode / mpc with latest external LAV filters also with hardware decode on etc.
I think video is never decoded by the nvidia chip, and intel's integrated chip is struggling, even with quicksync on...any clue?

    Hi D

Of its for Windows 10.... Before having to change settings in bios.. Try the thing below... It worked for me..

try tweaking these settings. Once you’ve completed the initial Windows 10 set up, open the VM'sSettings > System. In the Motherboard tab, ensure the box next to “Enable EFI (Special OSes only)” is checked, as well as the “Enable PAE/NX” box under the Processor tab.

Hi all, I recently bought Y50 70, but few days ago I got some video playback and games stuttering issue. At first when I boot up laptop and start video or game it is ok, but after while it starts to stutter and only restarting helps, so when it starts to mess up after while (10-20 minutes) I need to restart. Any solutions? have anyone find problem of that and solved it? I went to google to check out that problem, but there was no solutions at all.

Have you tried updating the 860m drivers? Try updating all drivers for you y50 and make sure that in the nvidia panel Physix is selected for GPU and not CPU. Also verify that the applications are running from the GPU.

    Hello All,

I've been having some issues with my Y50 when it goes into sleep mode. Often times, when I move the mouse or touch the keyboard to try to wake the computer, it doesn't do anything. It will just sit there and the power button will blink white. It's been doing this several times a day now. I use my laptop all day at school, so I would like to try to figure out why this is happened. I have to restart the computer and then have to go back and restore whatever documents I was working on from the auto-save feature on MS Office products.

I try to put it into sleep mode and save whatever I'm working on, but sometimes I forget. Sometimes this happens even when I do not put it into sleep mode, if I just leave the laptop on, it'll automatically go into sleep mode by itself.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does this have something to do with the power setting? Should I try turning sleep mode off? I usually have the laptop plugged in all day while at school and at home.

If anyone could help, that would be great,

    As always, thanks in advance,
    Kill@

Nope, the issue is still there after the update. I guess that poster might've thought so because sometimes after reboot the bug is "fixed" for awhile.

Hey guys, I bought the y50 Touch from Best Buy for school (so, its Core i7 4700HQ, 1TB SHDD, Intel 7260) about a month ago. I replaced the SSHD with a 750GB SSD (Samsung EVO) and did a clean install of Windows 8.1 within the first week of having the computer and so far so good. But today in class the computer just shutdown while I was typing a paper, and wouldn't start up. So, I went back home, plugged it in and a message came up saying that my battery was unauthorized and now the computer wouldn't start without the AC adapter plugged in. This is a picture of the message along side HW monitor which doesn't recognize the battery either:

    [ ATTACH=CONFIG]116379[/ATTACH]

Has anyone else come across this issue?
It just seems really weird since I can't think of anything that would have caused it.

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if there is a way around the intel graphics controlling the HDMI output on this machine? Like the 860m is a fairly good GPU and would prefer to use that as the output on the HDMI. Is there a way to make this happen? Or is the HDMI soldered onto the motherboard? Or is it just another thing nvidia optimus does????

As far as I understand, there is no way around the integrated graphics. This nvidia paper outlines how optimus works, look at page 14.

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/Lo_Optimus_whitepapers.html

I've been using it for gaming on an old 32" sony tv, and has worked great. Have you experienced any specific issue?

Let me know if I'm getting something wrong.

Try reconnecting the battery. Open the back cover unplug the battery, then plug it back again and see if the issue is still present. If it is still not working then most likely the electronic part is damaged.

I actually tried this last night but with no success; it just gave me the same error and wouldn't start up without the AC adapter.

One weird thing that occurred is after restarting the computer Windows seemed to recognize the battery, but once the Energy Manager started up I got the same error again. This is really frustrating.

I'm guessing this is a defect so I'll be calling lenovo to see what options they have for repair since Best Buy won't take it back or exchange for another unit.

That could be any number of things - malware, software, drivers....Did you install any software recently? I'd try rolling back to "Latest working configuration.." or whatever that option was called in Windows boot menu..

so I ran a virus scan and did some other things and it just BSOD'd... when it rebooted the scvhost.exe is back to normal, however my startup programs still don't load. no icons in task bar until I manually load them up, including audio. and I don't think I installed anything in the past 3 days

Yeah, something in the OS seems corrupted, files and/or registry. Try going back to previous config - a restore point or F8->Last known good config - another option is Windows repair. However if after all that you continue having problems then I don't know, I'd probably format and reinstall..

It seems that on my unit that just arrived the status lights bleed between the palmrest and bottom cover, like that part of the palm rest is lifted up a bit... should I go get that fixed? Or is that normal?

nope, system restore doesn't fix the issue, all the startup service don't run automatically. audio is disable for no reason and I can't seem to get it back to work...so should I just do a fresh reinstall?

At this point and given the fact I can't take a look at the OS myself I´d say go for a fresh install(with format). I don't know what happened but the OS seems corrupted big time.
