    Updated. What now?

Edit: Throttling is still there at 65C, with any stress test the CPU would stay at 2.4 and my temps are around 65C all the time. Honestly I already knew that, I'm pretty sure the intention behind the thermal table change is the fan clicking issue but I can't confirm this, its too hot around here so I'm above the temp range where the clicking is normally observed...I mean heard.

Edit2: Some members of the Lenovo forum say the update does not resolve the clicking issue though some members report its there but "less noisier"... So no idea what that BIOS update actually does.

I have just bought the lenovo y50-70 fhd version with 1Tb HDD SATA II 5400. Is it possible to replace the HDD with a SATA III SSD?

Thank you for your answer. Do you know if the port on the mainboard is SATA II or III? And does it matter?

That's exactly the same SSD I just bought for my Y50...I don't think you can beat the MX100 from a price/performance ratio.

And you definitely want to replace the hard drive, as it's a steaming pile of $#@!^& that is unbelievably slow. I've got an MX100 and Windows 7 coming...had this computer since June and I'm finally going to get it in proper working order!

Just got my Y50 (59421863 Model) today. This is my first windows 8 machine so that has taken me more time that anything to figure out.
First Impressions are very satisfying. Love the keyboard and trackpad is great once you get used to the windows 8 gestures. I ordered from the Lenovo site on Saturday and it arrived today before noon. Pretty quick turnaround which was nice. I think the price is absolutely killer for the specs and think this configuration is the biggest bang for your buck. My wife is jealous and wants one so maybe we will order another this week.

Highly recommended and will be continuing to follow this thread for updates. Thanks for everyone who helped answer questions on this thread. Definitely helped me narrow down which one to get.

So I pulled the trigger on y50 4K 256gb ssd 16gb ram and 2gb vram... although I wont use it in 4k display mode whilst gaming but I found the 1080p one too washed off and I ssly cant bear up with that screen... I know screen replacement would have been a viable option but I am getting the laptop from u.s to india so I thought I might not wanna risk the screen being brought up here.... so went for this.... got it somewhere around 1130$ from walmart.... so I wanted to ask 1).do we have a solution for 48hz rate and 2).what color profiles do I set to get the mustard yellow thing bothering less? 3). Can the screen be replacable with a 1080p screen in future (if this screen dies, lenovo india will charge me for getting 4k screen shipped from u.s) 4). And also , did I make a good choice? I am mostly going to use it for java programming , php, android programming etc and gaming.... I was eyeing for a sager but it doesnt provide service in india and asus rog would have been too heavy to carry around... so had to settle for 860m ... I also eyed for asus nitro but they dont have a good seevice rep in india.... and msi doesnt probide international warranty in india.... so lenovo was the best option....

Sata 3, doesn't matter that much if you are using a HDD. if you are using a SSD, all the better.

Since its black Friday, some days ago there was a sale for the SanDisk Extreme PRO 480GB on Amazon.com for the same price.
Consider that the SanDisk has 10 year warranty, and generally destroys every benchmark it's put against.

The first one of course, the 4GB Vram in the GPU is quite nice to have, especially if you plan to video edit.

The bios update is not only useless regarding thermal throttling but it also adds new issues!
Since I updated yesterday I have had FC when I'm playing This War Of Mine and I didn't before. I even uninstalled.reinstalled the game and it still happens.
    Thanks for nothing Lenovo...

Sounds good. Honestly though, I don't see what's so bad about the stock SSHD other than the stutter issues in games that I mentioned earlier. Games and whatnot start pretty quickly, as far as I can see.

Hi guys, need some opinions from Y50 owners here. I'm interesting in getting a Y50, and I've made my peace with the fact that I may need to change the screen :)

I had a couple of other questions:

    1) Is it true that the HDMI OUT in Y50 is *NOT* linked to the dedicated graphics card ? .. One Newegg reviewer seems to mention this, so I thought I'd ask.

    2) Do the Y50's heat up or are relatively warm when NOT gaming ? What about when you are are gaming ?

    3) Are the screens coming with a matte or glossy/reflective finish ? I would prefer the former.

    4) I've never experienced a touch screen laptop, so I'm wondering if its practically a good move or not. Opinions ?

Most likely its NOT an IPS panel. As far as I know Y50 with IPS does not exist unless its a second hand and the panel has been changed.
However some stores does offer configurations with IPS panels but I think they are all (intentional)typos.

Can anyone help me, I need to buy my Y50 by today, and I love the specs. I just need to know how to install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows... I normally wouldn't have problems, but this is my first Hybrid SSD-HDD computer. My model will have 8GB SSD space and 1TB HDD space. Anybody with tips on how to install dual boot windows 8.1 and Ubuntu? Get back to me asap please?

I bought this one today and I don't really expect an IPS panel. If it comes with one it'll be a huge bonus. I'll let you guys know.

As much as I liked the idea of the hybrid SSHD, stuttering in games in a no-go for me. Also, don't forget 5% cash back through Discover if you have that card.

Don't mean to sound impatient at all, but I asked a couple of questions yesterday which are on the previous page. They might have been overlooked as it's the next page now :)

    1) No idea, but yeah, some members say the IGP controls the output.

    2) No. Mine doesn't anyway. By the way "when not gaming" is not well defined, I mean the laptop would heat up if you perform some some heavy CPU/GPU tasks. If your question is if it heats up while idle or minor usage then no.

    3) As far as I know all FHD/Non-touch are matte. Not sure about UHD/Touch.

    4) Personally I don't like touch screen on a laptop, especially on one as big as the Y50. It really depends though, everyone has their opinion and needs so I assume there a lot of people who enjoy it. My suggestion would be to go in a store and try one yourself.

    ^^

Wow, that's major stupidity on Lenovo's part if HDMI out isn't controlled by the dedicated card. Is there any way to confirm this before actually buying the laptop ? I would a lot of Blu-rays on my projector and heavily use the HDMI Out functionality. Blu-ray playback sometimes requires Hardware Acceleration, so this might be a deal breaker for me :/

This is the deal. All graphics have to go through the integrated INTEL one, but when you enable the NVIDIA processor, it does most of the gruntwork so the Intel processor basically passes the image on through. If you're using HDMI out, there's a few things to remember:

    1) HDMI will not run at 60 hz when using most screens above 1440p. It's a limitation of HDMI, which is sad since the y50 has no DisplayPort.
    2) Make sure you set the program definitions in the NVIDIA control panel to use the graphics card.

If it still isn't using the graphics card, then there's probably something else going on but I think most people shouldn't have a problem.

    Thanks for the info.

So long story short, I assume you're saying there's a way to make the dedicated card be used (at least for actual computation) instead of intel ?

Also, I don't fully understand the importance of screen refresh frequencies when it comes to laptop gaming, etc. I just need to know if I'll be able to watch Blu-rays (not MKVs, etc.) using HDMI Out via software like TMT5, etc.

Yes, movies should be no problem. Just when you run the DVD-playing software, make sure you right-mouse-click on it, go to "Run With Graphics Processor" and click "High-Performance NVIDIA processor". It should be able to run movies no problem at resolutions under 1440p.

The options which you are describing, are they specific to Lenovo laptops ? Because I've never seen them before.

Also, can I also play games using HDMI out which will use the graphics card at 1080p ?

These are options for laptops/desktops with discrete NVIDIA graphics. Yes, it should run games at 1080p using HDMI out the same way it runs them on the laptop. Just make sure you turn off the built-in screen so it's not driving both.

Alright, quick, before the Black Friday prices change. Which SSD should I get:

    Crucial MX100 512GB
    Amazon.com: Crucial MX100 512GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT512MX100SSD1: Computers & Accessories

    Samsung 840 EVO 500GB
    Amazon.com: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-7TE500BW): Computers & Accessories

If I get the Samsung, then I have another question. Newegg sells it for the same price as Amazon but with Far Cry 4 FOR FREE. The thing is, I've never bought anything from Newegg. If the SSD doesn't work or something, can I trust that they'll take it back? In short, how're their returns?

    Thanks.

Also, I've never replaced a laptop's hard drive, so there's another thing.

Most of the instructional videos I've seen online get some kind of cable to clone the old drive. Do you have to do this?

I can get windows for free as a student. Can I just get windows on the new SSD and go from there, free from lenovo bloatware and whatnot?

get the MX100, that Samsung model has performance degradation issues (old files become so slow to read, that it's actually slower than a HDD).

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=9786383

No idea about the Newegg question, I've never bought from them.

P.S. Far Cry 4 is not that great, it's just Far Cry 3 with elephants.

Thanks for that confirmation. Although, my current laptop also has a dedicated card (425M) but at a quick glance I don't see that options you mentioned anywhere. However it might be because my laptop is about 3 ~ 4 years old and may the options you're mentioning are only for newer cards.

    Also had 2 more questions:

    1) This is the max RAM supported by Y50s 16GB or 32GB, or something else ?

    2) Does Lenovo give international warranty for their laptops which are purchased in the US ?

It's your lucky day--Amazon also does the Far Cry deal.

It's my unlucky day if that EVO performance issue is true. I almost pulled the trigger on the 850 pro 256GB for $150 but then changed my mind and went for the 250GB Evo. Starting to think I should have either gone for the pro or gone for 500GB...

It's a max of 16GB and I'm pretty sure they have an international warranty but I'd have to research that...

Yes, it probably doesn't have the Optimus technology allowing for switchable graphics.

Has it been confirmed that the 840 firmware update really does fix the issue? I honestly don't want Far Cry 4 that much. It's just that if the prices are the same, I thought I may as well.

If there's any question as to whether or not this fixes the issue, I'll just go with that MX100.

I feel that this fix will work on a new drive. The problem really lies in the drives used before the fix. As long as you apply the fix as soon as you get it you shouldn't have a problem. That being said, I really should have gone for the 500GB model or the 850 Pro (Which, by the way, comes with Assasain's Creed: Unity). Whatever--I'm sure I'll still enjoy it immensely.

I just made a quick batch file:

You can change the timeout time to whatever number of seconds you want. I made it run on logon and workstation unlock using the tasks commands. Hope this helps!

Can anyone confirm the Wireless 802.11-AC adapter that came with your Y50 and where you bought it?

The Lenovo website lists Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160, which is a single antenna, single stream adapter. I would prefer the Intel Wireless 802.11-AC 7260 adapter since it is a dual antenna, dual steam adapter. Unfortunately, the Lenovo site only lists the 3160 as available with the their Y series laptops. However, I stopped at Best Buy today and found a Y50 in their showroom with the 7260 adapter. Not sure if Lenovo has changed the wireless adapter and failed to update their website or if this is something that their resellers are able to request as part of their build specs.

    Thanks

I got mine from TigerDirect--4700HQ, 1TB HDD, 16GB RAM, 4GB GDDR5, FHD Refurbished (For $1k--good deal then, and now this one is $950 brand new with 1year warranty -_-) and I have the 7260.

My guess is the higher-end (4GB vRAM/16GB RAM) models have the 7260. But there's no way for me to confirm this.

Anecdotally from what I've seen, the retailers seem to have the 7260 and Lenovo seems to have the 3160. But that could also be incorrect spec listing. I wouldn't worry about it too much. People have reported problems with both.

The cheapest laptops with the 970m that were still somewhat slim and light (guessing that you do value those things) are:

    Fangbook Edge https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Fangbook_Edge_Gaming_Laptop/

    and the MSI GS60:

    Amazon.com: MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO-044;9S7-16H512-044 15.6-Inch Laptop: Computers & Accessories

Both are around $1600 to $1700, which is like 1100 pounds...however I don't know if you're going to get it that cheap in Europe. Anyway, if you're wanting the XMG P505, I was looking at it--wow, I really like that laptop! I don't know how you configured it to be >500 pounds more than that Y50...could you explain?

EDIT: Yeah, if you can get the Sager p650, get it. It's got the 970 and lots of neat features for around 1200-1300 bucks.

I think TigerDirect and Newegg run with the 7260. I got mine from TigerDirect with the 7260 but it's a little more sketchy. I'd recommend Newegg if you want to be sure...
