Just got my Y50 and have some questions.
I am using the stock TN panel and I can only really see the screen comfortably on max brightness. With this, my portable battery life only lasts an hour. Is this normal? And if I switch the stock panel out with an IPS panel, will it be brighter at say 50% brightness as opposed to seeing nothing at the same settings on the stock panel?
Secondly, the touchpad.. I've never had any problems with any other touchpads, but mine seems to be a lemon. The touchpad doesn't seem to register my finger all the time even when I'm sliding. There seems to be a small dead zone on the right part of the touchpad. I can live with it, but just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Perhaps a different driver could fix it?
-
I force installed the synaptics drivers on my Y50 and now it flys and the palm rejection works great. I'm not much of a touchpad person but the default drivers were terrible beyond words. I'm also running windows 7
-
Thanks for the reply. That's really a shame. you'd think that would be a battery saver option at the very least. Surprising it's such a set thing.
Especially considering it doesn't turn off when you close the lid either. It just stays on and i can see it glowing out from the sides. -
If your keyboard is still on after you shut the lid its because something is waking it up or keeping it awake like my anywhere mx mouse by Logitech I must power it off if I put the machine to sleep otherwise if I even nudge the mouse it will wake the machine up.
-
Well, if you want to turn it off, just click the left part of the space bar.
-
As Jon Lovitz said "Yeah... that's the ticket!"
(Watching the SNL 40 special)
-
Same here. Some Y50s have Synaptics touchpads that, for some reason, identify as ELAN, which causes the wrong driver to be installed.
If the touchpad options are disabled for your ELAN touchpad, try force installing the Synaptics drivers from the package on Lenovo's site. -
I installed the Synaptics driver from the support page since I did a clean installation of Windows 8.
But I just went into mouse settings, bumped up the default pointer speed and it seemed to have fixed the issue. -
I have read some a refresh of the Y50 is immanent? A better IPS panel, graphics card and processor would be added...
-
Yes, apparently an ips panel and a gtx 960m

ThrottleStop question:
I've turned off TS. My Y50 shouldn't be pumping any extra juice now, right? Wouldn't want it running on all cylinders for no reason. -
Hmm, 1150e, more pricey for a better screen+graphics card.
Might opt for the gigabyte laptops if i can buy it somewhere in france/belgium -
Actually, you might want to activate TS and limit the Multiplier (say 25 since it's not activating Turbo) and check "Power Saver" and "CE1". Now your CPU will definitely use low power. That could even be your #2 or #3 profile while #4 is battery (activating this one when not connected to AC Power) and #1 is for gaming/performance/work.

A few months back, I dealt with some micro-stuttering in Bioshock Infinite. Now I'm going back through it with ThrottleStop. While there's been a significant improvement, I still get a little stutter here and there.
Anyone else get the same thing in BI? I don't mean anything really serious, just an irregularity when you're walking around sometimes. -
So with the 860m core up +135 and throttlestop on 3.4ghz lock, I broke the 4,000 barrier on firestrike!
GPU max was 60 degrees and the cpu reached 80, pretty darn nice
Can you guys help me on how and where to unlock my bios? and how does all this unlocking business work?
Thanks

Can anyone comment on the general build quality? Is it anywhere close to business quality?
So far i broke most non-business notebooks in 2 years. Broken LCD's, defect mobo's ect. Probably always due to overusing/overheating :/ -
No I would not say it's business quality. The top, bottom, palmrest are made of aluminum but I would still say it leans towards the fragile side of notebooks. I always handle my stuff carefully but I know others who use things how they are meant to be used and just more or less throw them around and don't worry about banging them up. I don't think under those circumstances it would handle much of that abuse.
-
I handle them with care so I don't worry about the external built quality. I worry more about the internal build quality (usage of paste/glue instead of screws ect)
-
In that case you would be just fine. Just remember that Lenovo warranty pales in comparison to someone like Dell so you will be mailing it and it could be gone for weeks. So if you use it for business I personally would go in another direction. I looked into there at home service which basically covers nothing because if its something like a motherboard which is almost 99% of the machine these days since nothing is removable (GPU or CPU) they require you to mail it in even if you have at home service..
-
Quality is nice, mostly. Lots of screws on the back and enough paste on both CPU and GPU (one might say too much).

I just bought a Lenovo Y50-70 which is arriving tomorrow, and I have a spare 4GB SODIMM lying around:
http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengea...e-sodimm-memory-upgrade-kit-cmsx4gx3m1a1600c9
The questions are:
1. Can I install 4GB in the second slot while the original slot have an 8GB module? (Yes, 2nd slot is empty on my model)
2. This SODIMM is 1,5V, and I think 4th generation Intel CPUs mainly use low power (1.35V) modules, Is this a problem?
So, can I use the one I have, or do I need to buy a new one? -

Is the 960m purported to be a different, less powerful version of a 965m? I think the 965m would be a better option for the IdeaPad if it's as a reasonable $1200 price point.
-
Apparently the 960m is an 860m with higher clocks.
-
1. Yes you can. (In terms of RAM capacities/configuration)
2. No, 1.5V is not compatible with Haswell notebooks.Luterin likes this. -
Thanks for the info. I'll just go buy a new SODIMM instead. Really wanted 16GB total, but figured it was worth a shot with the 4GB free and all.

I'm wondering if my brother was using my computer while I was away.
I was gone for several hours and I put the Y50 to sleep when I left. When I came back I checked Event Viewer. I don't know how to interpret all of the information, but I see stuff with a time that was while I was gone.
Can Windows do stuff while the machine is asleep, or did he find a way onto my account?
EDIT: He could have accidentally un-sleeped it, I suppose. Even if he had no account access some events may have happened just from wake-up. Maybe I'm paranoid?Last edited: Feb 19, 2015 -
They already have IPS models for sale on the US Lenovo Y50 site. Has anyone used a Lenovo stock 1080 IPS monitor? I can't find reviews anywhere.
-
what are you asking? the only y50 model with IPS display is the 4k variant, which is, of course, locked at 48hz.
-
He's probably asking if anyone has the refreshed model yet, which is supposed to have a GTX960 and IPS panel
-
There are models on the lenovo site which indicate 1080p IPS (not 4k). I'm not sure if its a typo or not.lewdvig likes this.

Yeah, I saw these the other day. Several of the configurations list "15.6" FHD IPS LED Backlight (1920x1080)" for the display, along with the i7-4720HQ, but still have the 860M. I guess Lenovo got sick of waiting for NVIDIA to get around to releasing the 960M. I'm looking for a laptop for my girlfriend, and that $919 model with the i7-4720HQ, 860M, 8GB RAM, and IPS display looks very tempting. I'm somewhat reluctant to support Lenovo after their recent bloatware/spyware shenanigans, but that model just seems to be hands-down the best option in that price range at the moment.
Have to at least wait for some reviews of the refreshed models though, to see how good the new IPS panel really is. I know there have been complaints about the IPS display on the Acer V15 Nitro, so it seems there are some sub-par IPS displays out there. Hopefully Lenovo learned their lesson from all the complaints about the original display and didn't try to cut corners this time. -
...my guess is the IPS panel in the current Y50 is the one that will grace the referesh in a few weeks.

Y50 Cooling mod. Functional Air Vent Modification..... - 10c
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/lenovo-y50-cooling-mod-10c.772029/ -
Jetdel, i NEED to try this one!
But I dont have tools to remove it as You do, is there any way to do it without it? -
Has anyone purchased the updated Y50 yet? I just looked on the USA Lenovo site and they have a refreshed version up with the 960m for $1299. Has the 4720, IPS screen, 16gb ram and 1tb+8gb hybrid. Waiting for the Canadian site and microsoft store to update.

Do anyone has a hinge noise when opening or closing the laptop ? On the letf side ?
I'm wondering if that's normal or not. Like a little creaking sound. -
I saw the IPS screen update, but yeah I missed that one. It also has "WiFi AC Wirless (2x2)" Which I'm guessing is the 7260 Intel card. Looks like it fixes the screen and the wifi problems...makes it a great choice now for people who don't want to mod stuff for a little price premium. For example, if I upgrade my screen, it would bring my total Y50 price to $1200 maxed out (16GB, 250G SSD, 4GB gfx, and I somehow lucked out with a 7260 wifi card, all for $1100 after buying the SSD).

Hello guys I am having issues with my Y50. I am getting stutters after 15 minutes of Call of duty AW. The stutter goes away temporarily when if I log off the windows user account or reboot my system. After the stutter start all my applications lag even Counter Strike 1.6 stutters. I am having the FHD non touch variant with 4GB 860m.
-
Can anyone tell me which WIFI cards are supported on y50 as 7260 is laggy and unreliable...
-
Jinenigma, did you monitor your temp ?
And can anyone answer to me if their hinge are making noise when opening or closing the laptop, or even when adjusting the screen ? -
Yes jack I did, I even used XUT for undervolting. The temperatures were reaching max of 78. I am even using throttlestop
-
Mine is not creaking it is tight though about 2.5 month into ownership.

Hey guys, its me again, I decided today to take off thr back cover of my Y50, my screwer selection is small so I tried few of them. I was able to take off 10 screws, except the middle and top left one which are waaaaaay tougher than the rest. I even broke one of my screwers and I think that they do not fit properly (too small, hope I have not damaged the screw from many trials with the small screwer) what type of screwer would fit the Y50? Would Torx T5 fit it? I really hope the srews are not damaged... Thanks in advance, have a nice day!
-
i'd assume it's your hard drive (if you're still using the stock 1TB SSHD that came with the machine). i had major stuttering in all games too, until i put something else in there.
-
Yes I'm using the stock sshd, so isn't there any other workaround?
They shouldn't call it a gaming laptop if that's the case. -
should be a regular philips... don't use torx.
-
i don't know what to say; the specs clearly mentioned a 5400 rpm hard drive.. even so, it performs worse than other hard drives of the same frequency. the stutter usually happens when the hard drive spins up to access stored data. maybe Western Digital has some kind of firmware/driver update for it? i haven't checked so i wouldn't know.
-
Thanks for the information, I think it is the reason. I'll dig in more.
-
What about your GPU temp ?
And about your stutter/ lagg, is it a freeze that occur at some point or your FPS are dropping until you restart your pc ?
BTW, for the HDD issue, i use a software called quiethdd, which solved most of the freezing issues.
My Y50 is making some noise ( like a bit of plastic cracking noise), when i close it or when i adjust the screen during use. But not really when i open it.
