Anyone know if the BIOS update is coming to W10? Pretty dumb on Lenovo's part to release it after the W10 launch.

EDIT: I see some of you have updated on W10. Hmmm, might wait, might not...

Can you post the link to upgrade from 8.1 SL x64 to WIN 10 x64 Pro? There is only a media creation wizard on microsofts page..

I updated all the drivers. Use Intel's website to get the latest Wifi and Graphics website, Lenovo is always late. Use Nvidia's site for the dedicated graphics driver. Everything else from Lenovo.

Upgraded to windows 10 now my touchscreen only works on the main log in screen to swipe up but once logged in it does not work. Any ideas on how to fix it?

is the hinge cracking issue still a common occurrence or was it just a manufacturing defect in a batch of laptops? thats literally the only thing keeping me from buying a y50

It still happens according to comments over at Lenovo's forum, but for newer models the defect is covered under warranty. The 1st Y50's with the 4700HQ weren't being replaced when their hinges broke, so you'll want to avoid that model. The part where the hinge moves for the screen is tightened too much but can be loosened.

I use chrome as well and prefer my text to be small so more can fit on the screen. As for zooming, you can go into settings (wrench) on google chrome, go to font settings and set zoom more than 100, so it will be set on every page.

You can alternatively also change the size of font on the same page.

    Hi!

Sorry to crosspost this but I accidently posted it in the "main" Lenovo subforum and it seems to be better suited here, I humbly beg admin(s) forgivness and hopefully they can move the thread to this subforum or delete it since I'm asking in this thread (which seems more suited):

Recently bought an Y50-70 that has a SAMSUNG MZ7TE256HMHP-000L2 SSD. This seems to be an 2.5" drive but I have never opened and checked. Currently I have 6 different partitions all in all and would like to reinstall Windows 10 and have one partition (I know that Windows creates a hidden partition but at least I would only like to create one).

I tried using Parted Magic but the drive reports to be "frozen". I tried using the "Sleep" command in "Secure Erase" but that does not un-freeze it. I tried shutting down my computer instead of just restarting it and to boot directly to Parted Magic but it is still frozen.

In BIOS (running the latest version):
    "9ECN40WW (V3.00)
    7/29/2015"
I disabled "Secure Boot" but that didn't help.

I also tried burning Samsungs own secure erase bootdisc but it still reports the drive as frozen and I need to open the computer while it is running and remove the ssd and then re-insert it.
Is there any alternative to this? Parted Magic seems to suggest the same thing as Samsungs bootdisc but I really dont want to do it unless there is no other choice.

Thanks in advance for your help - TheSwede86

    Hi to all!
I have a Lenovo from april 2015, yesterday it gived me an "replace your battery" error from the lenovo power assistant, and i can't use it without AC connected, anyone had the same problem?

Bonus question: what ram frequency can the cpu/chipset handle? anyone have installed a non 1600/1333 module?

    Thanks

According to ARK Intel, CPU supports only DDR3L 1333/1600 ( http://ark.intel.com/products/78934/Intel-Core-i7-4720HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz)

I'm concerned about how this pair of headphones will sound on my Y50.

The reviews were looking great until someone on Amazon said this:

"Don't even think about wasting your money on this headset unless you either already own a sound card with a built in amp or separate amp/dac. [...] I initially had neither a dedicated sound card nor amp/dac. So what I did was what most might do, which is plug them directly into my motherboard's audio ports on the back of my PC. The end result was sound that was equivalent to sticking your head up inside a metal trash can at a live performance/concert. The sound was terrible IMHO. "

Obviously I'm not cramming some audio card into a laptop.

Do any of you guys own these headphones? How's the sound on the Y50??

Imma tell you right now. The sound card in the Lenovo y50 sucks!
If you have a little bit of money buy the SOUND BLASTER E1. Its portable and powerful headphone amplifier with support for studio-quality 600 ohm headphones.

Is this true guys? Can I flash Win10 Pro ISO with license provided by lenovo (Win 10 Home License)?
Because Windows 10 gets annoying sometime while booting, it shows black screen for 20-25 secs and then logs in. Iwould like to clean flash if Windows can be upgraded for Pro as this guy says. Can anyone confirm?

For me I just burned the iso the flash drive then added el.cfg file inside sources folder to skip entering the key and also skipped product key page after finishing the setup .
And after finishing I checked and found my device activated as pro without entering any key and still activated without any problem

Well there is really no difference in sound quality from the e1 to the e3. But the e3 does have a lil bit more features like Bluetooth and more control options on the device.
The E5 Is a full blown DAC so you can expect the best sound and build quality from it and it's a much bigger device, so it's not as portable as the rest.
btw the e3 and e5 last 8 hours on battery while the e1 can last 25 hours on battery.

I've used the soundblaster E1 on my xbox one controller and it works perfectly but i'm not sure if it would work on PS4. I don't see why it wouldn't though.

Usually you can't install a different OS than what you have a license for, this at least has been the state of things with previous Windows systems. So no go for that type of installation, sorry.

edit: seems some other lad up in the topic found a way for that.

Thanks but then I take it that there is no way to get back the Lenovo "OneKey" backup program once you have uninstalled it?
It does not seem to be downloadable from Lenovo's homepage. Also are you actually able to make recovery discs / USBs from it or is it just a program to clone / backup your "C"-partition?

I also take it that there is no way (or at least no-one has tried) to completely wipe the HDD / SSD and make a clean install?
Still trying to get my head around that "frozen" SSD-error. I have a 2.5">USB-adapter but that was not recommended (don't remember where I read it though).
I guess I could try to remove the SSD when I am already booted into "Parted Magic" or Samsungs Secure Erase bootable-disc and re-insert it which they tell you sometimes helps with the "frozen" situation.

These days a clean installation is relitively simple, since win 8/8.1/10 media can be downloaded from Microsoft and you can create a working usb install device with their tool. The installer will read your license key from bios/uefi.

    Hi to all guys!!

I am Bernardo, from Florence, Italy.

I am so sorry but i cannot read all the thread (even if i will do) for i need a suggestion as i have an offer for a Y50-70: i am a photographer, and have bought an ASUS N551jx wich comes with a 4720HQ and a gtx950 ddr3, with a great screen but with a POOR wifi not ac.
I have to buy a second laptop, so i was looking for this Lenovo wich comes with a 4710HQ, GTX 860 ddr5 !! and a WiFi ac.

What i have heard is that the screen has very bad color reproduction, with 64% of sRGB. Bad viewing angles and color reproduction.

Is that true? Is that THAT bad? This is my question.

    Thank you all,
    Bernardo

Acer might have something in your budget with an IPS display, check them out!

The Y50 with gtx 860m has a bad TN screen, only those with 960m ship with ips. That's my reason for buying y70 at the time, since y50 wasn't available with ips then.

No, the y50 with gtx 860m have a TN screen, but it's not bad. Sure the new screen is better, but that doesn't make the old one bad. Only time the angle problems really matter is when you are several people around the same computer, and that's not really what a laptop is made for...

Some people just seem to feel extremely annoyed by having to adjust the screen if they do any major changes to their position.

I disagree, the original TN panel was really very bad. The colors are washed up to begin with but even the slightest movement of your head would make that colors even worse.
I've never owned an IPS panel before, always TN and I don't consider myself picky when it comes to displays but that panel was one of the worst I've ever seen.
Besides, Bernardo said he is a photographer - IMHO the original TN panel is absolutely no go for a photographer.

Perhaps they changed the panel, because I have the second generation of the old y50, and the screen is far from as bad as you are saying. So perhaps we are both right, just different versions.

But you are totally correct in this specific case. If he is working on photos professionally, then he needs a really good screen, and this sure isn't it.

Then again, he should probably look into something more serious with a really good screen overall, which he really won't find in a gaming laptop in this price range.

He should probably do like me, if he wants to game as well, I bought an y50 for laptop gaming, and a ThinkPad for my work related stuff. Not saying he has to buy a thinkpad, but he should most likely buy two separate machines...

I have had my y50 now for a year and am very pleased with it (aside from the faulty hinges that it shipped with). However, I have a dilemma that I've put countless hours into researching to no avail.

    I need a backpack.

All kidding aside, and I hope this is an acceptable place to ask, but do you guys have any recommendations for a decent backpack that will fit the y50, protect it, not look stupid, and stay under $100? I'm leaning towards the Thule crossover 17", and I like the Slappa Spyder but don't know as much about that. The Lenovo y gaming backpack looks like it could be an option as well.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Looking for recommendations for a headphone and amp/dac combo for the Y50.

Just bought the Sennheiser Game Zero headphones and the Fiio E10K amp/dac. I'm really not happy so far. A lot of the higher sounds are a bit flat. Bass varies from okay to pretty sweet. Thing is, all of the reviews for those cans said a lot of good things. Is the Fiio E10K a bottleneck? Would a better amp make the headphones that much better?

And a Y50 specific problem: The headphones' cord splits into audio and mic jacks. I put the audio into the amp, but putting the mic into the Y50's headphone/mic jack didn't do anything. That is, I wasn't able to get the headphones' mic to work.

Anyone have a setup they can recommend? I'm willing to spend some decent money for higher-end gaming / music headphones.

Does the 4k monitor really affect the quality of gaming ?
i am going to buy it in following days but i still can't decide which model should i buy.
    1080p or 4k.
As i am a game lover, gaming performance is my main concern.
Can anyone give some advice about it

If you're talking about the laptop's own screen then buy the regular Full HD one. Gaming in 4K is going to require much more power from the GPU than this computer has, unless you downscale the picture and even then i've understood the quality won't be as good as playing in native Full HD.

If performance is most important to you then avoid the 3/4K at all costs.

I think you need an adapter to get digital audio out of that jack. 3,5mm to toslink or so.

But I tried sticking a 3.5 mm jack into that jack and it wouldn't go in all the way, so I think not. Or do you mean toslink going into the Y50 and convert to 3.5 mm?

Seriously, remarkably few relevant things showed up when I googled that SPDIF jack. No one uses it?

Sorry, i used a bit wrong terms. The right/equivalent one would be something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Monoprice-2671-Toslink-Female-to-Toslink-Mini-Male-Adapter-/231395419281

In my multiple years of ICT retail i think i've never seen a laptop which states that it has s/pdif-out and the actual connection would be a regular one, they always seems to be like this.

If they should have extended view instead of a cloned view then you'll need to buy an external GPU, one which should be connected to one of your USB 3 ports. You should be able to find those from ebay or amazon etc.

I am a new Lenovo user. I was lucky and grabbed a Y50-70 Touch rev. 2015 brand new on the cheap, and with the specs I and offered price I couldn't say no. Something that is referenced in a number of reviews is despite the many pros and benefits that there are several issues that I wanted to figure out how to fix once I get the laptop. I am currently deployed abroad so I thought I would reach out and see if anyone had some solutions.

    1) Temperature management - The laptop is known to get very hot. Despite my plan to mainly use it for schoolwork and basic tasks I also may do some gaming from time to time. Is a cooling pad an effective solution to the heat issue and if so which ones have you found to be effective / worth the small investment. If not what has worked for you?

    2) Screen clarity - Another known issue is clarity of writing and games in some cases due to the screen. But in some places people also said they found a way to adjust the settings and calibrate the colors so that becomes a non issue. Does anyone have any experience with that, that can explain the steps and/or suggest software which will help me clear up the issue.

    3) The wonky hinge. Im not sure if its still an issue on the 2015 model, but if so wondering how people fixed it and how simple/complex it is to DIY it instead of having someone do it for you.

    Thanks so much!

A cooling pad will help you to lower the temperatures but if these are still high I would recommend you to repaste CPU and GPU using Arctic MX-4 or any other high quality thermal paste.

My laptop reached 93°C before I did it. After repasting it and adding a cooling pad, temperatures are approximately 15-20°C lower while gaming.

Thanks for the advice Phobos! any recommendation on which cooling pad is worthwhile? Also how difficult is it to remove the backing of the laptop. I used to be quite savvy but I have not worked on the innards of a laptop in a long time. And i am worried about ruining the laptop before i even start using it.

I use a cooler master x slim. From what i have read online, some say that a cfm of 70 is good, and thats how much air output the cooler master puts out. (People feel free to correct me haha, its just what i read online), but it works well. Its very light weight as well. And i actually dont reall have that much temperature problems. I got my laptop around a month and a half ago, and i never go higher than like 60-65C, unless my room gets super hot when ac is off, because the sun hits my room directly. It really sucks haha. This is while plugged in and on balanced mode. The games i usually play are league of legends. The temps get lower by like 3-5C when i play on power saver mode and its unplugged. Even while on power saver, i get around 55-60 fps, depending on how much stuff is going on in team fights. Btw, quality settings are maxed out. I have the y50 with 4720 processor, 16 gb ram, 4gb 960m, hhd.

Oh, and the temps recorded are those for when i am playing a game

Jmun Thanks so much! I got the 8GB 2GB 960M version but considering it was at ~$400 under the average market price it was worth sacrificing the extra ram (which i can upgrade) and the lesser graphics card since I am not going to be doing too heavy gaming. I was looking at the X Slim from reviews on several different sites but thought this site would also be a good place to get some longer term reviews and suggestions. Would you also recommend adding an aftermarket thermal paste?

Umm if the temperatures are ridiculously bad, then, it would probably be good to do so. For me however, i dont see myself needing to do a thermal repaste for a considerable ammount of time, or unless i notice a big increase in temperatures. Also, dust build up in the cooling fans can also increase temps, so i would clean that as well. So, to go back on topic lol, it seems that after market thermal paste helps, and i would most likely do it in the future.
