What is the best way to go about cleaning the Y50? Is canned air the best option or is there a better way. From looking at videos of taking it apart it looks like it is not a simple process to clean it properly

I agree with you. Repasting the laptop makes sense only if the temperatures are too high, that was my case.

Josh N, I have a Cooler Master Ergostand which is not so slim, but I only play games at home so I don't need to carry it. What I like about this cooling pad is that you can adjust the viewing angle of the laptop which is good if you are not using an external display.

I guess the cooler master x slim is fine too.

Disassembling the laptop is not very difficult, but as Jmunandar said I wouldn't do it if it's not necessary, you just need to unscrew few screws from the back, then remove the cover. Make sure to disconnect the battery and the two wifi antennas. After doing it you can easily remove the CPU fan and the heatsink and apply the thermal paste.

I was wondering which cooling pad should i buy for my y50.
My room is quite hot when i don't turn on the air-cond.
Which cooling pad is suitable for y50 ?
As i am afraid that i cant find x slim
Apart from cooler master x slim recommend by Jmunandar ,
are there any suitable pads for it ?

So my last issue is the problem with the touch editions screen hinge. I was thinking a piece or several pieces of gorilla tape might keep it together longer or even solve the problem of it breaking and lenovo not believing its under its warrenty (ill also be overseas so getting it fixed will be a huge issue). Anyone ever try this/ think this might work?

I thought the newer models had the hinge problems under the warranty now? I think i saw someone post that. And im not too sure how well it would work. I dont have any hing problem atm. I try to be as careful as i can whenever i open or close my laptop. I can also see how the touchscreen can be more prone to a problem because that area is heavier due to the glass touchscreen.

Hmm yeah i honestly don't know. I ordered it off of eBay as brand new and the mfr date was in June so I assume it will be under warranty for at least the first year. The problem is It is an american warranty and I will be studying overseas so I need to figure out how to get it covered where I will be learning and if that warranty is transferable

So, ever since i moved to windows 10, ive been getting a blue screen once in a while that. says“VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR. Anyone else getting this? And if so, does anyone know how to fix it. And i got a video tdr failure once.

When i installed the new windows 10 drivers, do the old windows 8.1 driver get replaced? Or is it still there and it interferes with certain things?

So A fix has been found! after trolling at least a dozen threads on the Lenovo forums it seems loosening the hinge screws just slightly (1/4 turn) prevents the problem from occurring. Apparently it is so tight that it causes the plastic to bow and over time it simply fails.

This is a complete disassembly video just for reference thought it might help

I also had this issue, only once at this moment, after computer waked up from sleep mode.
It seems to be related with the video driver, I found this, downgrading the HD4600 driver to a lower version might solve the issue.
I haven't tried it, but would be nice to know if it actually works.

Anybody getting the 'DNS Probe Finished No Internet' Error on windows 10 when trying to connect to the internet?
I get that crap everywhere I go whether I am at a friends house, my home, school or just trying to connect to any wifi network.
I have the latest driver from Lenovos site on windows 10 but it seems to be breaking my Intel AC 7260 wireless card or something.
    Anybody knows a fix?

Question for experts: have you noticed improvements with hdmi connectivity after updating bios? I'm stuck with an old bios because I had it modded to remove the hardware whitelist and use an intel wifi card.
Hdmi connection to my hdtv is a pain, particularly the intel display sound driver.
If you'be successfully connected the y50 to a tv through hdmi, please answer me. Thx.

The screen is good if it's the IPS variant. The 4K model is limited to 48hz and the original Y50 uses TN with very poor viewing angles and color reproduction.

    Hi there,

Is it possible to upgrade the HDD to an SSD in the newer 2015 Y50 with the 960M and the IPS display?
I mean is it exactly like last year's model chassis-wise?
There are no stickers on any screws or something that would indicate that you opened it up so that the warranty would void, right?

    Thank you in advance!

I have the latest BIOS and I pretty much only use HDMI while at home. Every once in a while when the laptop goes to sleep while the tv is still on it gives me trouble when awaking the built in screen will turn on instead and the tv will stay black but if I just cycle the power on the tv or press fn+f3 everything is back to normal. This happens very rarely though, if I'm using both the tv and built-in display simultaneously in extended desktop than this doesn't seem to happen but I'm usually on one screen or the other not both so I may just not noticed it.

I opened it to repaste the CPU and GPU. I didn't see any warranty sticker.
Another forum member told me he called the Lenovo support to ask them if the warranty is void when the laptop is disassembled. They told him that disassembling the laptop it is not a problem as long as you don't damage any component.

so i was using my y50, gaming precisely battlefield 4 and my fingers were burning. Is it supposed to get that hot?
I checked with my other hand (one on the mouse) and that whole section was really hot.

So I have a question. I finally found out that luckily the specific laptop I bought was manufactured at the end of June 2015, so the issue with the hinge has already been dealt with, but I heard there is an issue with the Hybrid Drive they are looking into. Anyone know anything about that? Also can anyone link me to a post about how to fix the Yellow issue and calibrate the screen properly? or is that also unnecessary on the newest manufactured models?

Second but actually my main question. I am about to be a college student and know for myself if I dont have some sort of protective case on my laptop like they have on Macs its going to get roughed up, and I want to avoid that with an investment like this. IS there such a thing for the Y50 70? Ive been looking everywhere and all I can find are decals and sleeves, but no hard/durable snap on cases or something similar.

    1. I haven't had issues with the SSHD, but I recently rIeplaced it with an SSD because of a sale that was going on.
    2. Don't know of any Y50 specific accessories, however, I have a zip sleeve that seems waterproof based on my quick test. There don't seem to be any items that can attach to the laptop as additional forms of protection.

After reading reviews i bought the Samsung EVO 850 250GB hard drive, and i have 2 1TB externals one for data and one for backup that i just bought. I saw people had issues with this drive getting recognized by the BIOS and the Y50 anyone ever use it and did they have bad luck or is there an issue ? My Model is very recent it came out in 6/28/15 so im hoping those were issue with older BIOS models

That's the same SSD I purchased lol. I have the 1TB SSHD in an enclosure, but the bios still sees the OS partition that I left on there prior to cloning. You might want to update your bios, the newest one is v3.

It's a slightly crippled MX200, so a budget variant. Encryption would benefit those that use the bitlocker feature and perhaps other security measures.

    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX200...&ie=UTF8&qid=1440975272&sr=1-1&keywords=mx200
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-I...sim_147_7?ie=UTF8&refRID=01168Z2DMSNZ6JN0G2VA

^These drives are a little more and will offer encryption if you want it. Performance-wise you shouldn't notice a difference unless you do heavy writing on a daily basis.

    New BIOS is available, v3.03

Hmm why would Lenovo disable Intel Smart 2D Display Tech(if thats S2DDT)? No idea if S2DDT is really useful or not, especially on Y50 and/or W10 but still.
No idea what is SCU OS

Maybe that SCU fix is something related to the chipset and the SATA ports but I really don't know.

I rarely use the trackpad on my Y50 so I can't help you here. Besides, for some reason gestures never worked for me...
By the way AFAIK the Y50 is shipped with 3 or 4 types of trackpads from different vendors, depending on the region I guess, so you might wanna share which one do you have?

Anyway, I got a question for you guys - power setting on my Y50 weren't exactly perfect prior W10 but after the upgrade my Y50 never goes to sleep when I'm plugged in, even though the power settings are set to do so. Does anybody have this or similar problems?

I meant while idle. It supposed to got to sleep after 20min of inactivity but it never does. I'm sure its not an external application because I haven't installed anything new since the W10 update. I have the Lenovo power app and driver and I even tried reinstalling both but it didn't work.

Ok guys here's another question. I want to purchase an external battery pack. I have not found any that support the Y50 although the closest one was the Energizer XP18000 which you can get lifetime tips for for free. They have lenovo tips I just don't know if they are universal, because the Y50 or Y anything from the new series are not listed. Has anyone used one / can recommend one that does support the laptop or confirm that the Energizer pack works with the laptop?

And you have used this with the laptop?? That's awesome if so that was my idea but I was afraid it wasn't going to work. I found a new xp18000 for crazy cheap (about half off) but didn't want to pull the trigger until I knew I could find an adapter that had been tested by someone and confirmed that it works

To anybody who upgraded to W10 but didn't bother updating the drivers because everything seems to be working fine - get the W10 audio driver from Lenovo and install it, even though the version seems outdated. It really makes quite a difference.

I don't know what version I had when I upgraded but it was old. I upgraded to the newest version from Lenovo's website after the install and it recognizes my SSD without a problem. If I knew this was a problem more people had I would have paid more attention to the details. Sorry.

Okay guys, so I'm back with my problem, and it's gotten weirder.
So I posted here a few months ago about my laptop heating up a lot when playing games that aren't even resource-heavy (dota2, mostly). The CPU is in the 90s and the GPU is in the 80s. I've tried every solution I could find, cleaning the fans, repasting, formatting, blah blah, etc.
So I finally gave up and kept playing games on a bit lower frequency (1.9 GHz) using Throttlestop, this reduced the temps by around 10 degrees. So two days ago, I forgot to decrease the frequency on Throttlestop, and left it at 2.8 GHz while playing Guild Wars 2. I was seeing the temps and I was shocked. All the temps were below 70! This was ridiculous. I immediately started playing a number of other games, Battlefield 3, Skyrim, and Dota 2. The temps were all much lower, they never crossed 80 in any game. I thought, "Wow, this is a miracle. I don't know this happened but man am I ****ing happy!". But this happiness was short-lived. Next day, the temperatures were back to normal, 80s and 90s. I don't know what the heck is going on with my laptop, so I'm wondering if anyone here can help me. I'd really appreciate it and I'd love to get back those low temperatures. I want to enjoy my laptop to the fullest.
