Just a warning for you, the 4k screen has terrible color accuracy. The yellows are very brown and there is no fix. I had 2 of them and both had the issue, I ended up just returning it after nearly 30 days of it being shipped back and fourth to lenovo for a "fix". The 1080p model actually has great colors and is fairly bright, if you didn't like that then you may want to look for a different laptop.

I'm assuming its not under warranty, did you open up the bottom and check to see if both fans are working? If not, you can get replacements from lenovo for a 20-30 dollars i guess or if it's in warranty, have them ship it to you so you can replace it yourself.

It is under warranty, but the problem is that I live in India and my brother sent me this laptop from the US. I already contacted Lenovo and went to the designated Lenovo Warranty Service Center but they made it clear there that there's not much they can do for laptops purchased outside of India. So they simply opened it up and cleaned it up a little bit.
Also, how do I check if the fans are working after I open up the bottom? Is it safe to switch on the laptop with the back removed?
The fan sound can be heard when I'm playing games, it's like a very low 'whirrrrrr' sound.

Also I've noticed another thing yesterday. The CPU utilization keeps spiking to over 90% while playing games, is this normal? The temperatures are highest during these spikes.

Hey Guys, did that happen to any of you?
I was playing Dying Light and suddenly the FPS dropped about 10 or 15 frames
so I went to Task Manager and I was shocked that the CPU frequency was .7 Ghz
After I closed the game, it returns to normal 2.45 GHZ
I knew that the temp is the problem cuz it went up to 100 and 98
So I used Lenovo Settings and did a Dust Cleaning
The Temp now reduced to 90 but it quite high
Did any of you tried changing the thermal paste and the temp went down with a good margin?
The best thermal paste we have in Egypt is CRYORIG CP7 CRYO
    should I use it?

Well you can always argue with lenovo that all of their parts arrive from china so it's irrelevant where in the world you are, service should be provided as long as it is reasonable, theres another person with a broken hinge on the forums and he hasnt been able to get it fixed because the parts are being 'shipped' from america.
Anyways, yes, open up the bottom of the laptop and turn it on, let windows load and play a game to see if both fans are on (usually the smaller fan turns on when gaming). Keep the laptop on its back so the screen is on the bottom and the laptop bottom is up (try to do it on a soft surface). If the fans work, then I guess you just have a lemon :( might be best to ship back to the US and get it replaced by your brother

Btw this is after 5 minutes of GTA V: cpu spikes up to 90% but remains around the 50% usage area [IMG]

My Y50 was 39ish degrees on idle, after a few months it increased to 50 degrees on idle and 90+ while gaming. I got lenovo to change out my heatsink (i have in home warranty), which is basically like changing the thermal paste because the heatsinks come with preapplied thermal paste. Laptops temps were back down to 40 and 85 degrees under load max :D I should also mention that opening up the bottom and spraying the filter with a can of compressed air helps alot! The filter works great to trap dust but restricts airflow alot

I can take it to warranty agent but that I will receive the laptop after at least a weak and could be month
So, I think I will go with changing the thermal paste my self and cleaning the fan and filter myself
Thanks buddy for sharing your experience

Alright, I'll do that. Getting it replaced would be a very big and tiresome process for both me and my brother, and I would end up not having any computer for some 3-4 months at least, I bet. But if this laptop really did have a defect then I wonder why it worked perfectly for the first 5 months? I had the same temperatures as those shown in your photo. Also I wonder what suddenly changed when the temperatures went down drastically for just one day and then back to the 90s the next day? I really think there's some problem that needs solving, I can't figure it out. I really wish I could get my laptop working properly again, this really sucks.

Btw, do you use Throttlestop? Why does your CPU frequency change there?

I don't use throttlestop, the frequency changed from 3.4GHz to 2.4GHz because of thermal throttling, once the Y50 goes over 60 degrees, the processor is clocked down to 2.4 to make sure it doesn't overheat. With continuous 3.4 GHz on the processor, my laptop hits 95 degrees after an hour of gaming, so I avoid using throttlestop.

Oh I see, I didn't know the CPU could turbo while gaming, mine never did, it stayed on 2.8 max.
I meant to ask if you used Throttlestop to limit the CPU frequency, as I do. I set mine to run at 1.9 GHz to run the laptop at lower temperatures.

Also, any idea as to why my computer ran at normal cool temperatures for just 1 day then went back to high temperatures from the next day?

^^I can´t. On the Lenovo driver site there is "Lenovo Utility", dated 9/15/2015(yesterday..) but the version listed is the same as the one I have, mistake perhaps?. I haven't test it yet.

I honestly don't have any idea. I would fault the thermal paste application, but you said that you repasted it. The job of the thermal paste is to eliminate air bubbles in between the heatsink and processor, so less is more with thermal, if you splat it on alot (like i used to do) it will be a nightmare, sometimes working, sometimes overheating.

Hey guys... So recently i updated my bios to that v3.03 version. And guess what, the random shutdown with loud electric pop started again. It was happening to me when I had bought the lappy the first time, updated bios, and it was gone... until now... is there anyway to downgrade BIOS or anything like that? I have no idea how to solve this. I own this laptop for over 1 year now, and my screws are all screwed on the bottom cover (yep... genius me used the wrong screw driver... cant get them out now) so if i bring the lappy into a service, they will accuse me most likely of breaking it myself, since they might notice the screws... so yeah... I would appreciate if you guys could guide me how to downgrade bios or solve this random shutdown and give me some advice for the screws... I bought spare screws (exact size) I just gotta find out how to take these old one out. Thanks guys a LOT! :)

EDIT: used ccleaner, reverted intel drivers to earlier versions, but it still happens and no, it DOES NOT overheat, it happens very randomly, eg during chatting with someone on steam. I read forums and found out its pretty hard and risky to downgrade bios... Sigh... I guess i gotta wait for the next bios update then... Any1 knows when lenovo releases the next one? ps (screw the screws, my priority now is the shutdown thing)

I have all the previous BIOSes, I kept them all, however when I click on the older one, it says that BIOS version is not newer and closes itself. Could you guide me step by step how to flash to an older BIOS?

Also I think I found a way to fix the hardcoded lock of 48 hz of 4K displays
Just I need the edid and I think that it will work as I successfully overclocked my full HD screen to 67 hz with embedded it in edid of the screen itself
If there is anyone who want to test send me edid if your screen

Hello everyone I bought a Lenovo Y50-70 at 30th of August last month and I would like to ask about some problems I am currently facing. After buying the laptop for the first 2 weeks, it doesn't have much problems. However at the 3rd week, i kept hearing a "click-click" sound more and more often. It isn't coming from the speakers as I muted everything. I googled some information and they some said it could be the click of death on my hard drive. When I brought it back to the lenovo shop where I bought the laptop, the person said it should be normal as windows 8.1 is defragmenting the hard disk. However I am still unsure about this. The "click-click" noise is getting more frequent and is still happening as I am typing this. Should I be concerned about this problem?

    Specs:
    intel core i7-4720HQ
    12GB DDR3L SDRAM
Hybrid 1TB(5400 RPM) with 8GB SSHD
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M

    Model number should be 59442222

Hope anyone can help me regarding this.
Also the laptop heats up quite fast during gaming, sometimes over 80 degress celcius and therefor I always make it low settings and also limit my processor. Should I get a cooler?

    Thank you in advance.

Is it coming from the bottom right of your laptop or from the front where the hinge/screen is? The y50 clicking is a common problem, it's one of the fans unsure whether to turn on or off so it keeps on starting and stopping and hence the clicking noise

Theres an easy update, go on lenovos driver website and download the newest driver updates :D

Probabaly , I'm not too sure though, but i do know it's coming from around the keyboard area and it constantly "click-click" even if i'm not doing anything. It's more like a click rather than a scratch like "bzzz-bzzz" sound as shown in youtube. Do I have to backup my computer to update the drivers? and also which drivers do I have to download.

    Hello!

I bought my non touch Lenovo y50-70 (960m, i7 4720) 1 month ago. I am really happy with its performance.

But I am really worried about the hinge . Every time I open the laptop, I heard a noise on the left side of the hinge. And one screw of that is out without me doing anything. Other than that, everything goes and works great.

But I am really worried about that. So many people with thah problem.

So my question is...can I do something before it's already broken? (because I guess is matter of time).

    Thank you guys.

Well, if its only a month old maybe you could RMA it? I know people report problems with the hinge but my Y50 is over 1 year old know and I don't have any problem. Granted I don't carry my laptop around but nevertheless maybe only some of the Y50s have those bad hinges?

    Hello everyone,
I am considering buying the y50-70 with 1080p non touch, 4720q, 960m 1tb version. I was sure that I'd buy it until I came across a lot of online threads about connectivity issues (it has hard time connecting to wifi and when it does the signal is weak) and overheating issues. Have you had to deal with those problems?

And are there other things I might have missed and you think that I should know?

    Thank you.

So here is my review for the Y50-70 Touch Rev 59442858 Manufacture Date 6/28/15

Runs flawlessly. The hinge issue was fixed by this point as it is such a recent manufacture. No clicking and WiFi is flawless with no intermittent disconnects or limited service. Hard drive working crazy fast no issues. Speakers have no crackling or issues. the Games i play on high/ultra settings are at 55-60 FPS plus. No heating issues I do feel it getting a little warm but i have a laptop table with built in fans and a cooling pad but the table although small seems to be doing a great job keeping it cool. Keeping it at Windows 8.1 until Microsoft returns the descriptions for the updates to the general public and planning on waiting at least 6 months for all the kinks to be worked out of Windows 10. Having gone budget and clearance for most of my life in re: to laptops, spending some cash on a fully outfitted laptop (luckily it only cost me $799 brand new in the box with the ext DVD drive incl) was definitely worth it. The battery life is pretty bad that is evident they really needed to put in a 6 cell but that is not a deal breaker. My school has outlets at every desk so im not worried about charging it. Definitely needs more USB ports maybe a display port too. Screen brightness is ehhh but tolerable everything is crystal clear. Some writing appears to be slightly blurred? I am assuming that is because of the touch screen. The keyboard is also really easy to manage. Some people talking about keyboard flex but im not sure if they are punching it or something but mine has no such issues. I wish there were multimedia keys for pause/play next/previous etc, but i have a nice wireless Logitech keyboard/mouse set so that also is a non issue when im at home, and the touch screen makes changing songs much easier. This thing is a MAGNET for blemishes and marks and all that holy cow. It looks like a CSI crime scene and i haven't been using it for too long. I have an SSD drive in the worst case scenario that the hard drive does start to act up, but hopefully it will not become necessary and i can keep it for "just in case." My only gripe is even with the BIOS update, my computer still didn't recognize my new SSD when i connected it via USB cable unless i changed to Legacy in the BIOS and even then it wasn't simple. All in all very happy and impressed with this machine, despite the endless issues people are having I seem to have gotten lucky *knock on wood

Sorry i was out of the country and did not have access to internet! And i acccidentally said driver updates, i meant a bios update. You do not have to backup anything but just make sure that your laptop is fully charged and plugged in while you're updating the bios, you can download it from here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/pro...ops/y50-70-notebook-lenovo/downloads/DS100998

Wireless - if you have the AC7260 - this card suffer from driver issues on every Windows version which AFAIK are not resolved, the problems are random and depend on the network type and such. I suggest you try different drivers. There is a thread about it in the Network section.
Audio issues - I'd suggest reinstalling the driver, using the driver package provided by Lenovo. Ever since I did that I have 0 problems with audio and better sound. Dolby is also working.
Video issues - I don't know anything about that, sorry, but I hear latest several driver versions provided by Nvidia are not good at all, causing issues and slowdowns for a lot of systems. I suggest trying a different(meaning older) driver.
Update notes - thats a W10 thing and AFAIK it hasn't change and I doubt it will. There are some tweaks you can do about that though, I suggest you check the Windows section for more details, there are a lot of guides there.

Thanks so much for the help! I will definitely check out these sections. I do have the AC7260 but so far I have not had any problems with signal or connecting to networks all over the US as i have been traveling a lot. And about the update notes they were there in the beginning but microsoft got rid of them. I have a big issue with allowing a company to install its software and firmware changes without having a clue about what or how it could affect my system. I know they are returning them for companies ie the tech dept at large corporations but for the private user they as far as i know are keeping us in the dark, which i am waiting to change to install it. I will do some more research and see what I decide is best. Thanks so much!

Try reinstalling both the driver and the software, it opens fine on my system.

I'm a thinkpad user and don't know much about the ideapad line or the y50. Would this be a recommended laptop, I'm mostly just interested in it for the 4k screen. Is there a 4k touchscreen and a 1080p touchscreen? The auction seller just says touchscreen with no reference or knowledge of the resolution. What is the max ram you can put in it? Thanks

Anyone with the Touch model? Touch model + i7 4700HQ would be even better. I'm having a small issue with my 4700HQ, that doesn't enter deep energy saving modes, and it's killing the battery in around 1:40hrs
A friend of mine, with the non-touch model, can squeeze 3:30hrs out of it without even trying, so I'd like to find out what's keeping it from entering power saving states.

I'd like that you do a little test for me:
    - Please download ThrottleStop ( https://www.sendspace.com/file/tmc96z), extract and run it.
    - Disconnect your laptop from AC if it's connected (i.e. run it from battery).
    - Wait until your processor is "relaxed" (i.e. not busy with any significant task)
    - Click on that C7s on the right lower corner
    - Print screen that window, side by side with the main window
    AND/OR
    - Comment if you see the "Package C State Percent" C6 or C7 value gets different from 0.0 at any time.

If C6 or C7 value never gets different from 0.0, select Balanced profile, and see if it does this time. If it still doesn't, then we're in the same boat.
If it does, post here so I know it's not a "feature" from the touch models.

    Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm considering getting g a y50 touch from best buy with 12 month financing. I'm coming from an m17x r2 with the 1200p screen. Will I be pleased with the 1080p option on the y50 touch? I'm done with alienware so I'm looking for the best alternative to their alienware 15. Thoughts? Thanks

    Hi
    I have lenovo y50.
I just clean install my windows 10 and also the audio driver from lenovo website. Driver version 6.0.1.7514. My problem now is my microphone is not working. I've tried to make the volume from the control panel higher but its not working. When I used windows 8.1, the microphone is completely working now the microphone is not working at all.
Do you guys have any same problem with me?

    Thanks

Ever since I replaced the SSHD with an SSD, the Y50's fan never stops even when idle.

Before the swap, the fan would stop when the lappy wasn't doing anything. Now, the fan is silent for a few minutes after powering on. After a few minutes, however, the fan turns on and never stops.

I've checked temps and they're usully quite low when idle, so that's not it.

    Thoughts?
