No overheat, you can push it to turbo state and love the performance.
Take the wifi driver from the Lenovo driver partition, the last from the intel homepage seems to have an bug, they triggered in 1hour over 22.000 entries inside the system log in my case.

Lenovo is using a whitelist. You have to remove this from the bios or take a card which ist whitelisted.

I prefer alway a fresh installation, but save the drivers from the Lenovo partition.

Ok, long story short I think I am going to return the u430 to bestbuy and use my wife's 2-year old MacBook for the time being. There is a chance I will need to buy a windows of for grad school but I suppose I can cross that bridge if/when I get there and ill prefer to stay with the Mac for now at least until windows 8 is in better shape (it seems from my limited time with it that a touch screen is basically necessary) and there are more alternative halswell ultra books to choose from. The Lenovo may ultimately be ok but prob not in the best buy configuration.

The two main issues for me are the screen and the touch pad. I've read of other people having issues with wifi but the wifi on my machine has been fine so nothing to report on that score.

Screen - it is too dim. Sitting here facing the window (back of the computer is to the window so the outdoor light is not hitting it directly and on the brightest setting it is still too dim and I can see many reflections. Just now I tried playing with the screen angle and when it is fully open as far as it can go the contrast is at least slightly better tho its at an awkward angle for using the machine. The resolution is a bit poor as well...I probably need a machine that is at 1080p. Maybe when they are available from Lenovo directly that will be an option.

In any case, this would maybe be livable or at least I would get used to it. The real problem is the trackpad. It is practically unusable for me. Stirs sins not specific to all lenovo's as I was just out and walked last a Microsoft stand at the mall and they had a yoga on display that had a very smooth trackpad. With the u430 however the only way I can describe it is that it is a it too sticky. It is as if there is too much friction between the finger and the trackpad which prevents my fingers from moving smoothly across the surface. I adjusted the pads sensitivity which helped slightly but even with a lighter touch my fingers still catch and I find myself defaulting to just using the touchscreen as opposed to the track pad. I dont know if thr track pad issue will get better with time. Anyway, it was worth a shot.

Oh, also, the computer did not come with a windows cd or drive or anything (also there is no cd slot) so I am not sure how I would perform a clean windows install....

^ Thanks for the feedback SingerMan.

Why not use parallels to run Windows on your wife's Mac (or buy another Mac)? Even the MBA has one of the better TN panels, people say.

    Microsoft Store

Use this tool to turn a Windows 7/8 ISO into a bootable USB.

Lenovo is known for their good keyboards and crappy trackpads, that's how they roll.

Sorry to hear about that SingerMan. I got this at Best Buy a week ago, and I have to say I've had zero of the problems that some people have talked about. My trackpad has been nice and smooth since it came out of the box. Almost as good as my brother's MacBook Pro. No wifi issues or screen brightness issues. And the battery has been fantastic. I've been very satisfied with the notebook so far. The build quality is great; the aluminum is attractive and very pleasing. If nothing else, maybe there's a bad batch that got out, and you were unlucky enough to get one of those? Or maybe I've just been lucky so far, I don't know. Hopefully they'll get it sorted out, and you can get what you need.

Yeah you're right it could definitely be that there was a bad batch as some have reported problems and others have not. Fwiw some reviews on the bestbuy website mention trackpad stickiness as well.

For the time being I'm going to use my wife's MacBook and then if I end up needing a windows system I can either use parallels there or try another pc laptop. Thanks for the help everyone!!!!

I'm three weeks into using this laptop and I'm still not happy, for the precise reasons quoted above. I got used to the screen somewhat but then decided to transfer some data over from my old Sony laptop. Found myself reading a newspaper website on the Sony comfortably for the first time in a while. The Lenovo just lacks crispness. The trackpad has not improved either. Right-clicking is very unpleasant and imprecise as you have to concentrate to stop the cursor skidding across the screen. Pinch to zoom is disastrous because of the friction issue. I would advise anyone to spend some time in store testing the trackpad before buying. And the keyboard is poorly thought out. I suppose I can get used to the short travel, but these keys are not scalloped like the Yoga ones and putting the bl**dy Home key next to the (small) backspace key is a nightmare for a poor typist like myself. Should have bought the Yoga 13 and sacrificed a little screen area for a better display/trackpad/keyboard. One positive thing is the backlit keyboard, which the Yoga lacks.

Update Trackpad drivers and disabled unused multitouch gestures, that fixed so many trackpad issues on mine.....

As for the Yoga, the processor is SLOOOOOOW

My version says 16.4.0.0 but the date says from 3/1/13. I went to the lenovo driver site and it seems 16.4 is the latest but the date on the site says 7/13 for the latest update. Care to share what you're running? I have also had issues with the touchpad and not recognizing the scrolling feature with two fingers.

Also, my computer seems to not boot up sometime with bluetooth running. And I go to turn it on in the settings, and it doesn't work. I flip the switch and sits there like it's trying to turn on but than doesn't.

And lastly for wifi, my previous version of the u430 was faulty. Exchanged it for another one and it works now. But I still think wifi is rough in this laptop. In my room, internet is slow and sometimes gives me connection erros whereas my old dell never had issues. I'm running the latest drivers here as well.

I love this laptop, battery life is great, backlit keyboard is great, styling is great. There are just minor things that are keeping me from truly enjoying the computer.

Very strange. Lenovo's US website for the U430 (still "coming soon") lists only i3 and i5 CPU options, while the Egypt website lists those and a couple of i7 CPUs, including the i7 4558U which I'm most interested in. Hope it's a case of misinformation by Lenovo US. After all, they listed their FHD display as "1960 x 1080" lol.

    US
IdeaPad U430p | Thin and Light 14" Laptops and Ultrabooks | Lenovo (US)

    Egypt
IdeaPad U430 Touch | 14" Multitouch Ultrabook | Lenovo (EG)

For those of you still wondering about Lenovo's claims of 10-hr battery life -- it's 10 hrs on " idle at 150 nits" and 6 hrs on full HD playback. Still very good numbers.

Also interesting is that the US website indicates the weight as "starting at 3.8 lbs". The touch model is 4.16 lbs so I hope this means that they will be offering a non-touch one.

I think the u430 and 430p will be US available. That link you gave is the 430p on the US site actually. I'm surprised there is no working link for the u430. I can only afford to wait one more week on this releasing. I hope they put it online this week

I don't know why I haven't been paying more attention to this laptop. I put it on my list a long time ago and just forgot about it. Would LOVE an ultrabook with a 4558U. However, it's silly that they put in a reasonably powerful CPU but only 1 DIMM slot. But 8 GB should be all I need.

I wonder if that GT 730M is actually any better than the Iris 5100 that comes with the 4558U.

Well crap. I spoke with a Lenovo representative on their website's live chat, and he told me that the U430 will only be available through Best Buy. Now whether BB may offer a more powerful version in the future, I don't know. But he said that they would have other U-series notebooks, sold by Lenovo, for sale around November or December.

I know that these guys aren't the most definitive sources, but it looks like what we've got may be all we're gonna get on this model, at least in the U.S. And the data sheet looked so promising:

I've seen people on NBR with more expertise (and passion) than Lenovo reps. Phone reps are not the best source of info, tbh.

The single DIMM slot, being single channel, is a real bummer. I've seen notebooks even with the ram soldered on in dual channel. But I guess it's not so crucial with a discrete GPU and seperate VRAM. At least I hope so.

The GT 730M is moderately better than even the Iris 5200, according to this list:

Just spoke to two reps on chat and both said the U430 is coming out by the end of the month. I personally would be surprised if Lenovo left it as is at the Best Buy model. But can anyone dig a little deeper and try to confirm that upgraded versions will be on the US website. I'm waiting for this laptop and if its not coming out I might as well stop wasting my time. I would love to get the 730m and SSD, and don't mind waiting until the end of the month if its actually going to be available. I am going to be extremely pissed if this laptop goes into October, seeing as how numerous reps stated several August release dates in the past - and clearly that didnt happen

Well with the discovery that the T440s will come exclusively with HD 4400 graphics, the U430 is basically my last hope from Lenovo. Not that I have much confidence; we don't know for sure that they'll even make models other than the one currently available through Best Buy.

If anyone cares, I decided to talk to another Lenovo rep (yeah, I know), and this one said that the u430 will be available through Lenovo by the end of this month. Since it's already the 21st I decided to press, and asked if he believed it would be released in the next week or two, and he said yes. I did ask about the u430p, since it has different specs than are shown on the u430 data sheet, and he didn't really clarify the difference, just said to check the specs page when it becomes available. So I don't know which version we'll be getting, but if you believe the guy, we'll be getting something quite soon.

I don't have any experience with this laptop, but if you tried reinstalling drivers and that still didn't work then it's probably a hardware issue, meaning you'll need to take the laptop back again.

Hmm, after talking to another rep, I received interesting information.

U430 has been removed from the list, and new version would be coming out in mid-November (same with U330 and U430p).

    Hi,
I want to buy a laptop less than 1000$ for studying, programming and some light gaming, 14 inch or 13.3. and this is one of the candidates, but I have heard the display is dull, I need the laptop to study and do online testing 7-10 hours per day, do you think the dullness in the display matters for reading texts? also for online testing I need a reliable WIFI connection, I have read some reviews about WIFI instability. Do you think this laptop is proper for it?
    Thanks,

I have U410. Screen is great, it just has bad viewing angles. But when you look straight at it, it's pretty good. My eyes don't hurt as much as from my MSI at home, or ASUS monitor.

The keyboard is amazing. When I switch back to MSI or anything else, you can literally feel the difference. WIFI also works good (even that it was refurbished), so I don't think you have to worry about that anymore.

Yeah, I meant in terms of CPU performance. I know that the base clock on the i5 is higher, but that doesn't tell the whole story.

Iris 5100 is pretty nice for an Intel GPU, but it's still not as good as a GT 730M, which itself is not all that great. It's good enough for my needs though.

I know both will be offered, but I am a little curious about whether they'll come together. I've yet to see an ultrabook with an Intel CPU that carried Iris graphics also include a dedicated GPU. So it might be you get the GT 730 with the 4200U, but only the Iris 5100 with the 4258U. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I think it's because Iris uses a special 128MB buffer between it and the RAM, but i could be wrong. However, I wouldn't recommend the Iris model, as if you need integrated graphics for basic work you can just get the regular u430 for a lower price. Intel drivers aren't properly optimized for gaming anyways,

Oh god I don't see a function lock key on the keyboard. That means you won't be able to just hit Ctrl+F4 to close a browser tab. I need an F4 key a whole lot more than I need a mute microphone key. What a terrible decision.

Maybe I'll be able to re-bind the keys so that the F keys actually work. Even if there was a function lock, I wouldn't want to have to turn it off every time I use the home/etc. buttons.

Thats wierd. I've used other Ideapads and all of them have regular FN keys by default :(

Take a look at the bios/uefi. You can set the function back to default FN Function.
